Keeping score is fun with shots like this (golf)

One of my favorite retirement pursuits is playing golf at a neighborhood course about once a week. Coming back from the long-term chemotherapy of 2006-07 and then recovery from the 2007 stem cell transplant has been a challenge physically. I am constantly aware of the loss of muscle tone and strength. Long drives are not part of my game, but I strive to hit them straight whenever I can and to stay out of the traps and other course obstacles, and that's not easy on a course like Glen Ivy. Yet, some days are better than others.

As a high-handicap player, you can expect that I am most elated with an occasional par score in any round, so you can imagine my elation today when I actually scored a birdie (one under par) on hole #12 at Glen Ivy Golf Club in Corona.

My unexpected good fortune came on the 355 yard par 4 dogleg left hole that the course map guidebook admonishes players to "off the tee: avoid the bunkers on the left midway toward the green."

Rather than giving a full narrative of my three shots, see the image on the left where I mark approximately where my first two shots landed on the way to the green. Atypical for me, my first shot traveled around 150 yards to the center of the fairway.

The second shot was about equal distance, also down the center just beyond the cart path that crosses the fairway about 75 yards from the pin located in the center of a large green.

The clincher was my third straight good shot in a row (rare for me) that I managed to loft about 10 yards from the hole and I almost jumped out my shoes when I saw the ball roll the last ten yards into the cup! This was indeed my shot of the day and perhaps the year.

The rest of the round was pretty normal while my final score was an even 100 for the day and my twosome partner, Larry, ended with a 94. Notable was the fact that other than the birdie hole, my round included identical scores of 50 on the front and the back nine. The score is encouraging for me because it puts me within only one shot of breaking the magical "100" ceiling on this most difficult 6000-yard course.

Timekeeping in the SCT zone

If there has been a lesson and, of course, there have been many that came out of the ocurrence of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in 2006, it is that time-keeping has a necessary, but continuous presence.

As of this post, we mark 68 months since my successful stem cell transplant. That's 5.66 years or 1833 days. Does that mean we are cured?

Of course, we hope and pray that is the case, but none of my doctors will proclaim a cure. Never, for the remainer of my life, can we expect that certainty. Yet, survival is good and the best outcome of all. What is it they say about not focusing on the destination, but enjoying the journey?

Dee Dee and I along with our friends Larry Fetters and Kathy Wright spent several hours at City of Hope yesterday (May 10) for the 37th annual BMT Reunion with an estimated 5000 participants. Gathered in Duarte were those BMT and SCT survivors like me (since Aug. 22, 2007). Just a few yards away was the Helford Hospital where my transplant was performed. As the crowds assembled on the hospital's north lawn, probably about three dozen transplant patients occupied beds waiting for the day they could also celebrate with us.

Roslyn Franken is a proud young adult cancer survivor who knows the power of emotional resilience in the face of change, challenge and adversity. She was born to a mother who survived the concentration camps in Nazi Germany and a father who survived the atomic bomb in Nagasaki, Japan, as a prisoner of war. When diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer at the young of age 29, Roslyn quickly learned she inherited her parents' "NEVER GIVE UP" attitude as she herself fought back to become a long-term survivor.

Found this clip on my FB Wall from daughter Suzanne, an entry today from her Facebook about their trip to San Diego where son-in-law Warren is the technical director for the TV broadcast of the Diamondbacks-Padres game. Believe me, grandson John knows much more about these control knobs than you might believe. Given that our Angels lost today (May 5) to the Orioles, it is too bad that the Padre's broadcast will not be seen in the LA market.

Indeed, this is the best part of social media: Regular updates from family!

Human beings are the only creatures on earth that seem preoccupied with where they nest. To illustrate the point, just watch the popular television production HGTV. Here's an entire TV network built upon the principle that humans are highly interested, even obsessed with where they and others live and how they live. Granted: We have an equal fascination with how we travel, where we work, and how we look (most of the time), but the "nesting" issue seems basic.

The notion that our "nest" doesn't matter is disputed when you look at the evidence of children who come from stable (if not affluent) homes and origins versus those who do not. While I am not a sociologist, psychologist, or anthropologist, I can make the case that the nest is fundamental to the propensity and the capacity to succeed in life. Basically, you are where you cam from.

Yes, many a child from impoverished situations has risen well above that start, but far more with pedigree have taken a privileged path and remained on that course throughout their lives.

Josiah Gilbert Holland (July 24, 1819 – October 12, 1881) was an American novelist and poet who also wrote under the pseudonym Timothy Titcomb.[1] He helped to found and edit Scribner's Monthly (afterwards the Century Magazine), in which appeared his novels, Arthur Bonnicastle, The Story of Sevenoaks, Nicholas Minturn. In poetry he wrote "Bitter Sweet" (1858), "Kathrina", the lyrics to the Methodist hymn There's a Song in the Air, and many others.

2557 days since SCT

2557 days since my encounter of mantle stem cell lymphoma that lead to my August 2007 transplant to cure the disease at City of Hope. Who's counting? I guess I am and most grateful to do so.

Dee Dee and I were on our way that week for my 40th high school reunion near Orlando and she didn't learn about my condition until our return. Big mistake, but she has managed to forgive my indiscretion. More of the story, see my PROFILE and MyJournal which is now also on FLIPBOARD.

Gratitude for Thanksgiving and Torben

Photo: Torben and Berte Christensen. Torben is my stem cell transplant donor from August 2007 and the one individual on earth who can claim to be related to me, not by birth, but via transplant.

I know that thousands of miles separate the Foxworths in Corona, CA, from the Schmidts in Germany, but for the remainder of my life Thanksgiving will be one of those days to reflect on the event now more than five years distant that caused our relationship. Thank you, Torben, for your gift of life to a total stranger.

Following this story because of my obvious self-interest in the advancement of stem cell research, the life-saving procedure that, in 2007, made it possible for me to stay alive to write this.

The recent Nobel Prize recognition of work on artificially derived multipurpose stem cells by Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka (left) and Sir John B. WEDNESDAY, Oct. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Transplant recipients and patients with lymphoma have a significantly increased risk of developing and dying from melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, a new study indicates.

As a transplant patient and lymphoma survivor since 2006, I am well aware of this reality and grateful for the many specialists at City of Hope who tend to my care, along with the dermatologist in Orange County that I now see on a regular basis. Arsenic levels in rice found toxic

(CBS News) Consumer Reports found significant levels of arsenic in apple juice earlier this year, and now, the magazine has a new study, showing many brands of rice also contain the toxin.

The arsenic enters into the rice when it is grown, according to Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician at New York's Mount Sinai School of Medicine. 5th Anniversary of SCT Came So Fast

We are off on a short trip later today, a trek of some 30+ miles to Orange County and Brea to join family to mark the 7th birthday (tomorrow) of our only grandson, John.

This week is also significant for the family because the 23rd is the 5th anniversary of my stem cell transplant (SCT) to treat and cure mantle cell lymphoma. The video (above) is a clip from this year's annual City of Hope Reunion for BMT survivors, a gathering that we missed due to a conflict a couple of months ago.

Overall, we know that a miracle occurred in 2007 and continues to this day and, although life changed in many ways since then (early retirement, relocation, follow-up "minor" health issues), we know that it was a blessing and life-prolonging event that led us to the doorsteps of City of Hope in Durate, CA.

Gratitude is certainly the the "given word of the day," for this day of remembrance and this day of health and prosperity.

A man's indebtedness is not virtue; his repayment is. Virtue begins when he dedicates himself actively to the job of gratitude.
