In the six-part series, Chef Jamie Oliver heads to Huntington, West Virginia. Why? Well, Huntington has been called the unhealthiest city in America. Jamie wants to do something about that. Through his efforts in this one town, he hopes to start a chain reaction of positive change across the country.

Jamie says, "There's an incredible community in Huntington, and I want this experience to be a celebration of what we can achieve when people come together." Jamie goes on to say, "Wonderful stories will unfold in Huntington, and hopefully this will inspire the rest of the States." Sounds like a plan!

The political theater that was made by the year-long health care reform debate will now be followed by months, if not years of action (or inaction) to bring the plan to reality of the lives of Americans. This we know, the final chapter of this sweeping change in national social policy has not been written. More than 30 million on the uninsured will get health benefits, but time will tell if they are satisfied with the product and if taxpayers are getting a fair break on the investment of these dollars from the public troth. All members of the current congress will be retired or voted out of office by the time we learn the benefits and the negatives of this legislation.

Yesterday, I received another IVIG, immunoglobulin infusion, at City of Hope (COH). This has become a monthly routine that may continue indefinitely as doctors try to rebuild my immune system. Periodically (about every 90 days), I also receive infusions of the miracle drug Rituxan.

Since I haven't had an infusion catheter (known as a Pic line or Hickman) for more than a year and a half now, the nurses and techs at COH must run a new line each time I have these procedures. They are really experienced and good at this, but because of my initial 16 months of chemotherapy, these veins tend to be hard to find which often requires multiple sticks. On one occasion in radiology prior to a CT scan, running a successful IV proved impossible so after six attempts, so the radiologist asked the nurse to do the procedure without the IV. Ouch!

After yesterday's procedure, even though two "sticks" is tolerable, I wondered if there was a device to help make this process easier. Sure eno

A team of Georgia Tech engineers has developed a novel ultraportable system to identify veins for easier IV placement. The system is a miniaturized Doppler ultrasound:

The patent-pending vein finder is composed of two parts: A reusable unit houses the electronics and signal processing components, while a disposable coupler box holds a reflector and needle guide. The needle guide is positioned parallel to the sound beam being transmitted by a transducer in the device’s reusable section.

MYJ | Another CT scan soon to check the status of MCL

I have lost count of the number of CT or PET-CT scans I have had since the onset of mantle cell lymphoma in March 2006. I know there have been at least six and perhaps close to a dozen. But I know that there have been many. In at least once case last August, the return of MCL would not have been detected any other way. Shortly after that time, I had another form of radiation (TomoTherapy) to treat a single tumor in the abdomen.

Thankfully, the treatment was successful, as confirmed my a subsequent CT. You can bet I will be asking my physician about this story when we have a followup visit tomorrow (March 9) at City of Hope.

If you travel the world of blogs that are authored by those who are really composing personal journals you are likely to find some remorse and melancholy from time to time. My blogger friend Marc Kashinsky doesn’t normally write in such a tone, but his recent posting brought me to consider the topic on his mind.

Regrets | Living with MCL.

This link transports to a favorite blog written by a fellow MCL survivor, although Marc was diagnosed with a different (indolent) form of the disease. Yet, this blogging thing keeps us connected about each other's progress.

His comments about regretting to miss his 40th high school reunion four years ago is something I understand, even though I made my 40th, but am not likely to make my 40th college reunion this year because of travel limitations caused by a quirky immune system. Age 62 should not bring that condition, but MCL and an unrelated donor stem cell transplant might.

Happy to count myself alive to enjoy some early retirement years, these minor inconveniences bring some irritation, but no real regrets. Everything happens for a reason.

The subject of this report, Russel Turnbull, has had his sight almost completely restored, thanks to a pioneering procedure using stem cells. Adult stem cells.

Dr. Francisco Figueiredo, an eye surgeon at the North East England Stem Cell Institute, performed an operation that involved cutting away a tiny portion of Turnbull’s undamaged eye—complete with stem cells. He then grew the section of the eye to 400 times its size, and stitched it “onto the badly-damaged cornea in place of the damaged membrane,” the Telegraph reported.

Turnbull is thrilled with the results. “The operation was a complete success, and I now have my sight back,” he said. “This really has given me my life back.”

MYJ | Counting what's positive about cancer survival

Just a couple of weeks away from the fourth anniversary of the discovery of my cancer (mantle cell lymphoma), my thoughts, by choice, turn to the positive aspects of survival which, of course, is always goal #1.

This article gives an overview of the typical cancer survivor and much that is stated here is reflected in my life. Most notably: dramatic life changes.

Chief among the changes has been my early retirement which officially begins on March 1, although I am still officially on medical leave while some administrative matters are handled. Turning 62 in June of this year, I had always believed that I would probably stay the course of my profession (fund development for nonprofit hospitals) until some unknown years beyond 65. Cancer changed the timetable for sure.

Found on my Facebook wall this morning was this video clip from a cardiologist about the need for patients to monitor their cardiac condition following and during cancer treatment. This is sound advice but not intended to create excessive alarm. Like me, if you are constantly under the care of your primary oncologist (and I will be for the rest of my life), he or she can monitor this situation and refer you to a cardiologist when conditions and signs would indicate the need.

Consider Your Heart During Cancer Treatment

There's a spectrum of heart disease that's associated with cancer care, including high blood pressure, weakening of the heart muscle and congestive heart failure, according to Guilherme H. Oliveira, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Cardiology at M. D. Anderson. "The role of cardiac care in cancer treatment is becoming more important than ever," Oliveira says.

"While newer cancer treatments offer patients a better chance of survival, many also have a direct impact on the cardiac system." For example, Oliveira explains that newer targeted therapies zero in on and destroy the molecules that are essential for the survival of cancer cells. But these are the same molecules that are vital for optimal functioning of heart cells.

New Test Genetically Fingerprints Tumors

In a fresh advance for the burgeoning field of personalized medicine, researchers have developed a blood test based on the DNA of tumors that could help tailor treatment for individual cancer patients.

The report, announced Thursday, represents one of the most tangible examples yet of how the ability to sequence a person's entire genetic code could have a direct impact on patient care. There have been a flurry of reports on new sequencing technology that is yielding enormous amounts of information about genetics and disease, but that has yet to deliver much in the way of new treatment strategies.

"For cancer patients there hasn't been much utility so far. This may prove to be one of the first useful approaches," said Victor Velculescu, co-director of the cancer biology program at Johns Hopkins University's Kimmel Cancer Center and senior author of the new study.

“By overselling and overpromising colonoscopies, we’ve put up barriers for people’’ to get any type of screening, said Dr. T.R. Levin, Kaiser Permanente’s colorectal cancer screening chief in northern California.

Everyone is supposed to get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50, but US data show just 55 percent do. That’s better than a decade ago when screening rates hovered below 30 percent, and new cases and deaths have dropped as a result.

Millions skip test for colon cancer

WASHINGTON - Nearly half the people who need potentially lifesaving checks for the nation’s second-highest cause of cancer deaths - colorectal cancer - miss them, despite years of public efforts to make colon screening as widespread as tests for breast and prostate cancer.

The dreaded colonoscopy may get the most attention but a cheap, at-home stool test works, too - and when California health care provider Kaiser Permanente started mailing those test kits to patients due for a colon check, its screening rates jumped well above the national average.

Now specialists are looking to Kaiser and the Veterans Affairs health system, which also stresses stool tests, for clues to what might encourage more people to get screened. Colorectal cancer can be prevented, not just treated, if only early signs of trouble are spotted in time.

My stem-cell transplant to fight mantle cell lymphoma was possible because the donor search was successful. We found an unrelated donor in Germany and we were given those cells on August 22, 2007. That life-saving procedure sustained remission for another two years when the cancer recurred and was treated with radiation successfully last September.

What is the ExCell study?

ExCell is a clinical trial studying StemEx® as an alternative transplantation option for adolescents and adults with leukemia, lymphoma and other high risk hematological malignancies, who are unable to find a matched, related bone marrow donor.

The ExCell study is sponsored by the Gamida Cell-Teva Joint Venture. The JV is committed to advancing the clinical development of StemEx® and improving the treatment of adolescents and adults with hematological malignancies.

Why is this study being conducted?

Umbilical cord blood has lower matching requirements for transplantation than bone marrow or peripheral blood grafts and is therefore considered a possible alternative source for grafting.
In addition, cord blood transplants have been associated with a reduced risk for Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD).

One of the consequences of 16 months of chemotherapy following my March 2006 diagnosis with mantle cell lymphoma (now in remission a second time) is that my immune system is challenged. This new reality makes me far more susceptible to infections and illness, so we are guarded about exposures.

That's why we were back to City of Hope Wednesday for the second of a series of seven monthly IVIG infusions (gama globulin), a class of blood plasma proteins, most notably including the antibodies that help fight infections and disease. MORE | http://wisegeek.twi.bz/a

The gama globulin infusion process is not unlike chemotherapy, taking 5-6 hours to complete the dose of about a liter of fluid that looks like pink lemonade. But unlike chemo, this substance has few side-effects other than its main purpose (boosting the immune system).

An immunoglobulins test is done to measure
the level of immunoglobulins, also known as
antibodies, in your blood.

Antibodies are
substances made by the body's
immune system in response to bacteria, viruses,

Hence, stories like this one surface from time to time about high-profile citizens of these nations who choose to come to the U.S. for advanced medicine, where they probably usually pay out of pocket.

All of this gives much fodder to those on the side of stopping any attempts in the USA to implement a similar system here for government-run health care.

Lawrence Garfinkel dies at 88; statistician helped link smoking to lung cancer

Garfinkel had a key role in two massive studies with the American Cancer Society, one of which helped pave the way for the landmark 1964 surgeon general's report on smoking and health.

Lawrence Garfinkel, the statistician who overcame his lack of a doctoral degree and training in oncology to become one of the driving forces in demonstrating that smoking causes lung cancer, died Jan. 21 in Seattle. He was 88.

The cause of death was cardiovascular disease, according to his son Martin.

Garfinkel oversaw the training of thousands of volunteers for the American Cancer Society and helped conduct two of the largest epidemiological studies ever, enrolling more than 2.2 million men and women. The first of those studies, along with the British Doctors' Study, played a key role in formulating the landmark 1964 surgeon general's report on smoking and health.

‘Survivor’: Ethan Zohn shares his cancer battle with ‘The Doctors’

Coming Monday on “The Doctors”: “Survivor: Africa” winner Ethan Zohn talks about undergoing a stem-cell transplant. Zohn, 36, has been battling CD Positive Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and says the stem-cell transplant was “the best way to reset my body.”

He spent 21 days in isolation after the risky procedure and talks about his prognosis with Dr. Travis Stork. The interview airs at 3 p.m. Monday on WKMG-Channel 6. (Zohn and Stork are pictured in this CBS photo.)
