Marking a most significant 40th anniversary

Now at age 63, I realize and fully appreciate that (like many my age) my adult lifetime has seen great advances (and huge expenditures) to fight the battle against cancer. || http://bit.ly/tlDrN2

What I did not realize 40 years ago near the start of my adult life was that I would personally benefit by the success of the medical community in waging this fight. I am a survivor of mantle cell lymphoma since 2006 and received a cutting-edge stem-cell transplant from an unrelated donor in 2007 as well as an advanced form of radiation (TomoTherapy) in 2009 to successfully bring remission, not once, but twice from the disease. A donation that really saves a life

My history with this organization is remarkable and memorable. This was the organization that made it possible to find my German donor in 2007 for the stem cell transplant that saved my life from the fate that was predictable with mantle cell lymphoma that occurred in 2006.

DNA damage, repair may be key to cancer and recovery: DUARTE, Calif. — City of Hope scientists have found a key to a protein’s ability to repair and make new copies of DNA, which may lead to a greater understanding of how genetic damage contributes to diseases such as cancer. The study is available online now in advance of print publication in Nature Chemical Biology. Story dated 23 Aug 2010

Binghui Shen, Ph.D., professor and associate chair of the Department of Cancer Biology in Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope, led a team of researchers who discovered a new way that cells modify a protein called flap endonuclease 1, or FEN1, to control its activity. FEN1 plays important roles in proper DNA duplication, repair and clean up — all important functions to keeping cells healthy.

City of Hope is one of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers nationwide and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. An independent biomedical research, treatment and education institution, we are a leader in the fight to conquer cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases.

City of Hope is the cancer center which coordinated and provided the stem-cell transplant from an unrelated donor that saved my life in 2007 and, again, when the cancer returned in 2009.

DUARTE, Calif., July 15, 2010 — City of Hope is recognized as one of the top 20 cancer centers in the country in U.S.News & World Report’s 2010-11 Best Hospitals rankings. City of Hope moved up to the 20th position on this year’s list of top cancer hospitals, and also ranked 38th on the list for urology. The institution is the second-highest ranked cancer hospital in the Los Angeles area and one of only six centers in California to appear on the cancer list. In urology, City of Hope is one of only three in the Los Angeles area and one of six hospitals in California, to be ranked.

City of Hope is one of only 152 medical centers to appear on the prestigious annual list. Hospitals are selected from 4,852 eligible hospitals nationwide in 16 specialty areas. This marks the institution’s seventh year on the top cancer hospitals list and its fourth appearance for urology.

Approaching a third anniversary

The last week of July 2010 means that Dee Dee and I are only a month away from the date (Aug. 23) of our third anniversary of the stem cell transplant for the mantle cell lymphoma that occurred in March 2006. Thanks to the life-saving procedure and the grace of my donor, Torben Schmidt of Germany, I am able to continue this journal and my other blogging while I remain cancer free with confirmed remission, not once, but twice from the disease. See the photo (attached) of Torben, Birte and Linus, the son that was born to the Schmidts last year.

The Schmidts live in Göttingen (map), which is a university town of about 150,000 in Lower Saxony (north central Germany). The location is about 260km (161mi) northeast of Darmstadt where I resided from 1960-62 when my father was stationed there with the U.S. Third Army.

While our full recovery remains a work in progress since I am still due to receive the childhood immunizations that should start soon, my health status is the best since the onset of the disease four years ago. We officially retired this year and Dee Dee and I are adjusting to the classic definition of retirement: "Half as much income with twice as much husband." Thankfully, my blogging time and a weekly round of golf permits Dee Dee a break from the routine of minding Mike.

Before closing this post to my journal, I want to use my experience to encourage anyone who is under 40 and in good health to consider becoming a stem cell donor (or organ donor). Having the "talk"

My daughter Kirtley was only 13 months old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1986 at age 37. By fall 1991 I was healing emotionally, and Kirtley was a happy, healthy 6-year-old who had inherited my stubborn nature and love of books. Even after the first of the BRCA genes was discovered in 1990, I knew my risk was low. I was the first in my family to get cancer. It was stroke or cardiac issues that removed my family tree limbs.
Then my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in the fall of 1991; she died six months later. It was a difficult time for me and became even more difficult as I began to worry about whether I now needed to worry about passing on more than a love of books to my daughter.
As I celebrated survivorship and Kirtley grew, I constantly scanned information about genetic testing for breast cancer, feeling sure that we would know more before I should worry.

Q. Please explain your study’s finding that most women over 70 with small, contained breast tumors do not need radiation — although that has been the standard therapy for years.
A. We had to give radiation treatment to over 300 women to prevent in-breast recurrence in 21 women [over 10 years]. What else did it buy the patient? Essentially it made no real difference. The radiation did nothing else in terms of preserving the breast, survival, or anything.

After 43 years of living paralyzed from the neck down and recently learning that she now has breast cancer, Joni Eareckson Tada remains all smiles.

Tada, 60, was diagnosed with cancer early last week and it was confirmed on Tuesday that it is malignant. She is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday when doctors will better understand what stage the cancer is at.

For decades, Tada has assisted and given hope to those affected by disabilities through her Joni and Friends ministry. Paralyzed since 17 after a diving accident, Tada dedicated the rest of her life to God and has, in the process, inspired countless people around the world.
