Facts About Malaria

2013-03-21T20:09:00.001+00:00

1) Malaria is very common (endemic) in tropical Africa, including Nigeria. Of the estimated 300-500 million cases of malaria that occurs annually, 90% occurs in tropical Africa.

2) Malaria is responsible for approximately 1-3 million deaths per year, most of these deaths occur among children living in Africa, where a child dies every minute from falciparum malaria. Together, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria account for over 40% of the estimated total of malaria deaths globally.

3) There are five parasite species that cause malaria in humans:

* Plasmodium falciparum

* Plasmodium vivax

* Plasmodium malariae

* Plasmodium ovale

* Plasmodium knowlesi (peculiar to South-East Asia)

4) The predominant species that cause malaria in Africa is Plasmodium falciparum . Unfortunately, Plasmodium falciparum is the MOST DANGEROUS (most deadly) of the five species of human malaria.

5) Malaria is transmitted (transfered to the human body) mostly through the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria can also be transmitted through blood transfusion. The Anopheles mosquitoes bite at night and breed in water.

6) Symptoms: some authors have described malaria as a MASQUERADE because of the very many symptoms that have been associated with it and ability to mimic many other diseases.

Some of the notable symptoms of malaria include fever, headache (almost always present), chills (feeling of cold), vomiting, Cough, Fatigue (feeling weak), Malaise (feeling unwell), rigors (shaking),

Arthralgia (pain in the joint), Myalgia (pain in the muscles),etc

7) Diagnosis of malaria should be based on symptoms AND diagnostic testing to confirm parasitaemia (by microscopy or rapid diagnositic test). Diagnosis based on symptoms ALONE has been shown to have very low specificity (ie results in giving anti-malarial drugs to many patients without malaria) and should be discouraged.

8). Because malaria and parasitaemia (finding of malaria parasite in blood) is endemic (very common) in tropical Africa including Nigeria, positive diagnositic test result does not necessarily mean malaria is the cause of the persons symptoms. The physician should exclude other possible causes of the person's symptoms before arriving at the diagnosis of malaria and prescribing anti-malaria drugs.

9) In all situations malaria should be treated with COMBINATION anti-malaria drugs. The use of one anti-malaria drug is wrong.

10) The combination anti-malaria drugs that have been recommended by experts include:

* Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) : is the first choice for most persons. ACT options include:

- Artemether plus Lumefantrin (coartem)

- Dihydroartemisinin plus piperaquine

- Artesunate plus amodiaquine

- Artesunate plus mefloquine

* Other recommended anti-malaria combinations include:

- Artesunate plus doxycyline (or tetracycline)

- Artesunate plus clindamycin

- Quinine plus tetracycline (or doxycycline or clindamycin)

11) Malaria is treatable, curable and preventable.

The ABCD of Malaria Treatment

A: be Aware of the risk of malaria if you are travelling to a foreign country.

B: avoid mosquito Bites by taking appropriate measures. Reducing the number of Bites reduces the chances of getting malaria.

C: Comply with the appropriate prophylactic drug regimen for the area you are visiting. This is vitally important since failure to comply places you at great risk. Studies have shown that there is a reduced risk of contracting malaria even if you take the wrong regimen.

D: early Diagnosis of malaria if symptoms manifest following travel to a malarious region is vital. Malaria can be fatal but early diagnosis and treatment is usually 100% effective.

Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets (malaria control)

2013-03-08T17:56:00.000+00:00

Malaria has the highest burden of disease in Nigeria with an estimated 300,000 children dying of malaria each year. It accounts for over 25% of infant mortality (children under aged one), 30% of childhood mortality (children under five), and 11% of maternal mortality.

At least 50% of the population has at least one episode of malaria annually, while children aged less than 5 years have 2 to 4 attacks annually (NDHS 2008).

Malaria is particularly severe among pregnant women and children under 5 years of age, due to their relatively lower levels of immunity. The best way to prevent malaria outbreak in our homes, is to use a malaria treated nets.

The World Health Organization is of the view that if the treated nets are used properly by the people it could prove an effective way of fighting malaria. In the war against malaria, the cheapest and most effective weapon to date has been the long-lasting insecticide-treated bed net. Over the last few years the nets have been widely distributed in Africa and elsewhere.

Prevent Malaria Attacks With Mosquito Nets

2013-01-14T16:36:00.001+00:00

Parents, who may not want to administer their children drugs frequently as a result of mosquito attacks, should develop the mindset of using mosquito nets daily. They are affordable, and in most cases, distributed free to families both in the rural and urban areas.

Apart from using mosquito nets during bedtime, the doors and windows in the home should equally be covered with mosquito nets.

Mosquito nets are handy and come in different shapes, sizes and colours that could fit into any space in the room, doors and windows.

Use mosquito nets all day and enjoy health-free mosquito bite.

Caring For Mosquito Nets
Before using chemically-transformed mosquito nets on the bed, sun-dry it two days since the chemicals are harmful and may result to loss of life.

For mosquito net on the doors and windows, clean with towel and soapy water, at least once in a week.

For mosquito net on the beds, wash at least once in a month so as to avoid dirts blocking the tiny openings.

Avoid keeping open flames close to the nets, since it is highly flammable.

Edo Govt. Distributes Free Mosquito Nets

2013-01-14T15:57:00.001+00:00

Determined to control the spread of malaria in the state, Edo state government has commenced distribution of free treated long lasting mosquito nets across the 18 local governments areas.

Dr. (Mrs.) Cordelia Aiwize, the state commissioner for health, while monitoring the distribution exercise in Benin City, appealed to local government officials and focal persons to ensure that the nets were properly distributed to the advantage of every family in the state.

The commissioner who was at the Oredo, Ikpoba Okha and Egor local government areas, frowned at the distribution system in some local government areas, pointing out that the state and federal government have put machinery in motion to ensure that all families get the nets free of charge and with ease.

She enjoined women who were with net tickets to be orderly at the distribution centers so as to ease the job of the health workers, adding that there were enough nets for every family in the state.

Dr. (Mrs.) Aiwize expressed dismay over the choice of private clinics engaged for the distribution of the nets by authorities of Egor local government instead of usingpublic facilities, warning that anyone caught stealing, hoarding or diverting the nets would be handed over to law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, Dr. (Mrs.) Aiwize has restated the state government’s policy of free malaria treatment for both pregnant women and children under five years.

She stated this while declaring open the free medical screening exercise organized by the Ologbo Elite Development Association.

According to the Health Commissioner, the state government has also initiated free eye test and glasses programme for persons from 70 years and above at Stella Obasanjo Women and Children Hospital in Benin.

FG spends N26bn on 30m treated mosquito nets

2013-01-14T14:50:00.005+00:00

The Federal Government has spent N26bn on procurement and distribution of 29 million treated Insecticides Treated Nets to 17 states in 17 months, in an effort to combat malaria.

The Coordinator, Roll Back Malaria Programme, Dr. Babajide Coker, told the News Agency of Nigeria that money spent so far was from the inception of the programme in 2009 to date.

He explained that the RBM programme could not cover the whole country simultaneously due to financial constraints, “hence the need to put the states in waves.”

He added, “As of today, the LLIN distributions have taken place in 17 states and we have distributed nearly 30 million nets in those states.”
