MLFM episode #31 - My Last Time...For Real This Time.

I tell myself whenever I produce an extended podcast that this will be the last one...and I mean it from the bottom of my heart...until I begin hearing music and I know me. I say I will do a part two and I never complete it. So then I come to that crossroad- should I make a music podcast that is close to 90 minutes or even close to 2 hours. I say "Yes" because of one reason. School.

This year school and work is a pistol but I know I have to get this out of my system. For close to 3 years I have used two artist's music tracks when doing my intro and ending voice-overs and I think it was about time I featured some of the work of Todd Kelley and Nicolay. At first it was going to be a podsafe show then while walking and humming the track "Hey" it hit me to put some music in the playlist by Nicolay and Todd "The Big La" Kelley.
When it comes to Todd Kelley his instrumental mixes has always been a set of music that influenced me when it comes to writing. Whether if was my show notes or just writing in general. Nicolay's music, I have to admit I have his music and I know his instrumental tracks is are really cool but I never made myself just kick back and just relax to his music. So this time I made myself gather some of his music and at the last moment purchase The Foreign Exchange, "Connected" instrumental album which I knew when that happened I would have to squeeze some more tracks in the line up.

I have music peppered in here by Michael Franks from his new album, "Time Together", a couple of favorites of mine by DJ Center featuring Middle Child and Apes on Tapes, and a couple of free download tracks from Iodapromonet and All About Jazz. I also came across three tracks via YouTube. One track I learned from a Google+ fellow geek and from there I found two tracks that when I heard them I had to rush over to iTunes and download these tracks.

The results is a music playlist close to 2 hours of music so as always, kick back, relax and enjoy the music journey.

p.s. So this time is my last time putting together an extended playlist like this...I mean it this time...for real...I hope.

This is the third album by Atomic Skunk and it's another gapless recording and he got it right again. This is an music work that you have to make time for yourself, make sure you do not get disturb because once you start the journey you will not want it to end until the album has come to a complete stop.

What I dig about Atomic Skunk (Rich Brodsky) music is that no matter what kind of day I have had I know that when I put on his music nothing else matters to me, the stress, the intensity melts away from me.

When his first LP, "Binary Scenes" dropped it blew me away and I knew this was an artist I would follow. "Binary Scenes" is still one of my favorite albums so when his second album dropped, "Portal" and Rich told me it would be gapless I knew I was in for a treat. From the first track "Portal" to the last track, "Forest for the Trees" for me it reminded me of another gapless album that took me on a musical caravan that I thought only Andreas Vollenweider could take me on with his album, "Down to the Moon".

"Alchemy", his latest album again hits that music taste and leaves me full and satisfied. I looked up the meaning of the word alchemy and I thought I knew the true meaning but I was wrong. The meaning I came across fits Rich's latest album perfectly...

"any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value." [ http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/alchemy ]

What that means to me is that Rich took the common elements of sounds, instruments and made this into something enchanting and engaging. For me every track is like an ingredient that fits into place and if one was left out the entire musical dish would not have been the wonderful "music" food that is now. What is so cool is that Rich took his time and with this album and the finish product is another winner for Atomic Skunk. But you know he could just leave with a full musical stomach without throwing in a little desert, right?

The bonus track, "All American Robot" is very cool. For me, it reminds me of the artwork on Queen's "News of the World" album in which a nice, sunny day small town parade is interrupted for a brief moment by a giant intelligent robot trying to understand our culture. How Atomic Skunk blends these sounds together is wonderful and again leaves me saying to myself, "Rich ol' boy you've done it again".

I hope you set aside some time and just enjoy the musical voyage that Atomic Skunk is going to take you on.

First and foremost I have to thank my former Vox buddy Cheryl Hardy[http://www.sibbotery.com/] because I don't know if she realized it but she helped shape this podcast in regards to an exchange we had on Google+ about relaxing music.

After my last podcasts I made myself find new music in my library and what I came across is the albums "World Without Walls" and "New England Roads". Ancient Future's "World Without Walls" was sent to me a while back my focus was converting some cassettes I picked up at the Goodwill because I know me when it comes to taken on that task I become lazy so I forced myself to complete that mission and once I completed that I could move on when new music.

Ancient Future[http://www.ancient-future.com/index.html] I never heard of but I'm glad I took time to listen to the album. This album was released back in 1990 but was re-released in regards to the band's reunion tour this year. When first listening to the album it takes me back to when I discovered World/Fusion back in the 90s when I worked at The Nature Company store at the St. Louis Union Station. Whats' so cool about this album is that it combines the genres I enjoy, a bit of Celtic, Fusion, Jazz, Bluegrass all in one wrap.

Will Ackerman, long time fan of his music, his vision for bringing many of the musicians I admire to this day. Mr. Ackerman was the founder of Windham Hill Records that brought artists to the forefront like Alex de Grassi, Barbara Higbie, Michael Manring, Liz Story, Shadowfax, the late Michael Hedges, George Winston. The list goes on and on but since that time he sold Windham Hill settled in Vermont and from time to time he performs and occasionally records.

His latest album "New England Roads", has been a favorite of mine since buying it last year. To hear his work on the acoustic is soothing to my ears. I'm not going to go into details because I wrote a post on the album a while back [http://myloveformusic.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-thoughts-on-will-ackermans-new.html] I can't believe it's almost been a year since I've had this album in my possession and I don't think I showcased the album. Man time flies but that's the past and I'm bringing it to you now so that's what matter.

What I have enjoyed about this type of music is that you can have intimate gathering of friends over to share this music with or if you're by yourself you can just kick back and just get lost in your thoughts. This year has been a journey of self-discovery and learning to truly be myself and love myself and this year of podcasts has helped me get back to who I am why I began this podcast almost 3 years ago and it feels refreshing to me.

I'm going to warn you up front, this podcast is not work safe because you may become to relaxed. This podcast is for when you get home and you're in your comfortable chair or lounging and every thing is in place and now it's time for you to take some "me" time. Go ahead...you deserve it.

This ThriftStoreGem was going to feature tunes from the album "In Full Swing" by Full Swing and "Natural" by the jazz group T-Square but Mr. Jarreau happened to "creep" in this music playlist and in the end I think he truly completes this wonderful music set. This music set is music from the albums "In Full Swing", "Breakin' Away" and "Heart's Horizon" and "Natural".

Something about the tune "2 Good 2 Be 4gotten" that has always stayed with me. I still have the cassette LP and I remember hearing the vocals by Lorraine Feather, Augie Johnson, and Charlotte Crossley. When I heard "2 Good 2 Be 4gotten" I called the college station Lindenwood Station to find out who were the artist that song that tune. When the gentleman told me it was by the trio Full Swing I went to record store that following week and bought the album and from the first track to the last I was hooked. Back in 90s groups like The Manhattan Transfers and Nylons (on the Windham Jazz label) were the big thing and Full Swing was up there with that talent. After listening to "In Full Swing" for like the ga-zillionth time I found out there was another album by Full Swing, "End of the Sky" which I wore that out as well. I don't have that album now but to the wonderful world of Amazon I will have it again and in the future I will bring you music from that album.

T-Square was another group I found out by accident and shame on me for not having other albums by this group. This was another group I discovered by listening to Lindenwood University radio station, 89.1FM (that radio station has long dropped the jazz format and that breaks my heart because I discovered so many artists by listening to that radio station). When first hearing the track, "Control" I was so hooked. To me that is a wonderful "Driving/Pick-me-Up" tune and again off I went to the record store to find the album. These two albums I have had over twenty years and I'm so glad I converted them to digital and can share them with the masses. If you feel there is a little hint of "Russ Freeman" in some of the tracks you would be correct because Mr. Freeman produced a couple of the tracks on this album.

Al Jarreau, what can I say about this gifted vocalist that hasn't been said. As I said in the beginning of the post this was just going to feature the work of Full Swing and T-Square but for some reason I began listening to to Mr. Jarreau and I had to squeeze in his work from his "Breaking Away" and "Heart's Horizon" albums. I can count on both hands the vocalist I can listen on a regular basis and Al Jarreau is on that list. What is so cool about "Heart's Horizon" is that there is a slew of talented musicians that helped make this album on of my favorite by him. You should read the heavy hitters that performed on this album, from David Sanborn to George Duke...from Bobby Caldwell to well known percussionist Paulinho Da Costa; it's an "Who's Who" list (one of my favorite tunes by Al Jarreau is "One Way" with Earl Klugh providing the nice acoustic guitar work on this track). There is even a track on the album with the one and only Bobby McFerrin, "Yo Jeans" (Sorry it didn't make the playlist but I will bring it to you in a future podcast).

It was really fun to put this one together because it brings back so many wonderful memories in regards to a time I was coming into my music taste and the cool people I met over the years when moving from my hometown to "across the river" as we used to say back in the day.

Big shout out goes out to Proteon Shelby (the Al Jarreau music block goes out to you since you let me know you're a fan of Mr. Jarreau), my new Google+ peeps (reminds me of the Vox blogging community - you are so missed.

A Thank You Note To Musicians That are Finding my Google+ Site

Hello and Happy Friday everyone!

First and foremost let me start off by saying it's really cool that so many musicians are finding my Google+ site but there are a couple of changes...

I fought it and fought it but I had to do it because I'm getting many musicians asking to following me so I set up a new G+ account just for music. It's *gplus.to/myloveformusic* (yep, I broke my own rule saying I was just going to have ONE G+ account...dang it!!!) If you wish for me to check out your music please use that url instead of my personal one here (sorry for the inconvenience)

Now comes the hard part...although I dig different genres of music from time to time my main love is instrumental music. I dig Smooth Jazz, Traditional Jazz, instrumental Bluegrass, Ambient, Soundscape, and Downtempo/Lounge music. I really do not listen to vocal music unless a close friend online or offline recommends the artist (sorry).

With that said, there are plenty of sites, podcasters that would love to hear your music but my love for music is mainly instrumental.

The Joy of Converting Cassettes : Chet Atkins - "C.G.P."

I know I have converted this cassette album numerous of times and each time I feel, "just one more take". This beautiful, relaxing, hypnotic by the late Chet Atkins, "C.G.P." (which means "Certified Guitar Player") is a treasure to have. To have a combination of jazz, bluegrass wrapped up in roll album is so cool. To me this 1988 release is a timeless recording. I really need to get this on CD but I just dig sitting back and just hearing the warmth of the cassette every time I play it.

When I heard the first track, "Chinook Winds" I knew I was in for a treat. Chet's guitar style of playing is not new but at the same time when you hear him you know it's Chet. What's cool about this tune is not only his style but the keyboards solo and the rich and thick bassline by Larry Paxton.

"Put Your Clothes On" is one of those tracks where you can't help but close your eyes and rock your body back and forth. The wonderful guitar work by Chet and the fiddle work by Johnny Gimble is beyond words. It takes me back to when me and my queen attended a pig roasting and in the presence of good people and good food and good music will last a life time with me.

Mark Knopfler, founder of the group Dire Straits, does a wonderful cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". With Chet playing in the left channel and Mark playing in the right channel is a great piece of work and come to think of it, I need to be ashamed of myself that I haven't featured this in a MLFM podcast playlist.

The great bass work by David Hungate (bassist for Toto), the sly, laid-back guitar work of Chet makes "Light-Hearted Lisa" would be enough but at the keyboards and synthesizer for me I'm in heaven with this tune.

"Knucklebuster" wraps up side 1 with a deep, low-end playing style by Mr. Atkins. With the horn arrangements thrown in it is so chilly in a nice way.

"Jethreaux" is just one of those tunes that you just kick back on a Saturday evening as the sun is going down and it lights up the sky with a yellow/orange glow. It's one of those tunes where you take your sweetheart, and just dance a silly dance..it's just a fun tune.

Another tune makes you move in your seat is "Which Way Del Vecchio". The way Chet plays the guitar on this tune is so care-free and beautiful. It puts me in mind of a Earl Klugh composition but on the electric side. With the hint of keyboards and the thumb-thumping bassline is pretty cool.

"Daydream" is just one of those foot-tapping treats where you can just imagine it's just Chet and the guys seating around and just jamming.

I love the tune "Mockingbird Variations" because on this Johnny Gimble joins him on his tune. The playing back and forth between him and Chet is such a joy to listen to between the fiddle and the guitar and to put the icing on the cake is the vocals harmony that is thrown in there. love it...just love it.

At first I didn't care for "I Still Can't Say Goodbye" because of my bias of instrumental albums until I listened to the lyrics and it took me back to my grandfather and the hats he used to wear so now this is one of my favorite tunes by Chet.

One thing I dug about Chet Atkins was that he adapted to changes of music styles and when that happens you allow yourself to learn from your peers as well as young musicians coming up in the ranks. Earl Klugh really liked Chet Atkins as a guitarist and a friend and I can see why. Although I never had a chance to see him perform live thank goodness for his recording.

The Joy of Converting Cassettes : Christopher Cross

For me the cool thing about converting cassettes to mp3 is the fact that it makes me slow down and "listen" to the music. At this moment I'm converting Christopher Cross self-titled album. While converting the album it gives me time to search the web and read up on the artist and the process and thought on recording the album. I have always enjoyed reading the liner notes and now with the help of different sites from Wikipedia to All Music.

Another cool thing when I sit and listen to the album is that you discover tunes you would have never paid attention to and for me music is about discovery and that's a wonderful thing because it evokes feelings, memories. For example I knew that Michael McDonald sung background vocals on "Ride Like the Wind" but I don't think I would have ever given the tune, "The Light Is On" and "Minstrel Gigolo" a chance if I would have had this on CD. I would not have learned about the guitarist Eric Johnson [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Johnson ] who is playing the solo on the track "Minstrel Gigolo". This is how I used to learn about different musicians from liner notes and later when I was in record stores and I so happened to come across that artists I read on the liner notes I would take a chance and purchase their album.

With CDs many times we just "rip" the album to our hard drive and keep on moving. Don't get me wrong, I love the quality of CDs but again it's just something about the cassette that makes me thankful that I grew up in a time when music was still evolving but at the same time it made time stand still for you. I don't get that feeling from most music today.

I've always had a spot in my heart for "Soft Rock" and Christopher Cross "Sailing" is one of those tunes that brings a smile on my face and makes me thankful for the love of my life and artists like Christopher Cross that wrote compositions like this.

I remember first seeing the video to the track, "Hooked on Classics (Part I & II) I knew I had to have this album. And I remember spending the night at my grandmother (the original O.G. - Original Geek) having this vinyl album in her music library and how thrilled I was to sit and listen to the album over and over. I remember listening to the track,
"Hooked on Romance" and writing 9 poems to a girl I had a high school crush on at the time sitting in my grandmother's favorite chair. I couldn't believe I cranked out 9 poems in one night listening to this tune over and over. Needless to say she never went out with me but that's okay because God had my Queen for me and I just didn't know it so all is right with the world. ^_^

Everything about this album, produced by Jeff Jarratt & Don Reedman...Louis Clark, former arranger for Electric Light Orchestra, conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra[1] to me was so cool, blending classical with the Linn Drum and throwing a little disco flavor to it. To Classical lovers this may have been blaspermy but for me it made realize how cool classical music could be and I never forgot that feeling this album brought my soul at that time in my life.

Fast forward to 2011 and at the Goodwill store and I come across this gem. This was cool in two ways: First, cassettes were being brought to the Goodwill again and Second: to find this wonderful album again. Funny when hearing or even seeing the album cover can bring a flood of memories to you...memories you thought were long gone.

This Thrift-Store Gem is really a gem for me because I enjoy bringing music to you, the listeners that it may bring back memories, have you discover music you never knew was out here or seen the album and you were afraid to take that "leap of faith" or you were too embarrassed to let anyone know you liked a certain type of music. Well for me, I'm not ashamed of the music that brings a smile to my face. Whether it's George Clinton or Glenn Campbell. My motto is if it sounds good play it because when sharing music be different and be that trail-blazer because you never know who you may influence.

What strikes me about music from the Windham Hill label (1976 - 1996) is the fact for me it makes me face my emotions. For me with this beautiful music it makes me face what I'm going through. As much as I try to resist it the feeling comes plowing through like a bull through a china shop. I've come to realize for myself that this, smooth jazz instrumental music is my "gospel music". With music from Windham Hill it's my "alone time" with my thoughts, my conversation with God.

Another cool thing about Windham Hill is that I had a chance to read the liner notes on the many musicians that played on the albums, the location of where it was recorded. I loved the cover art photographs or graphics that were chosen for each LP. You can't get that with mp3 downloads. Although some downloadable albums now gives you option of downloading the liner notes it's just not the same. When holding that album or CD in your hand and thumbing through the liner notes for me it took me to another time.

For me I could close my eyes and picture being there in the studio or when looking at the cover art being at that place at that very moment. What I enjoyed was the fact the artists of Windham Hill taught me about taking chances on other artists when I came across their albums while at the record store. Also I knew what I was getting with the sounds from the Windham Hill label, great, quality music.

It's been a while since bringing you an all "Windham Hill" line up...hope you enjoy the music.

My Interview with Doug Ramsay {right click to download}

What started off as a school assignment ended up as maybe a new thing I may begin doing on a semi-monthly basis. I reached out to my brother in podcasting, Doug Ramsay aka Doug Fresh, for an interview. What I found out was some wonderful things about Doug and myself.

This is my first time doing this so when I listened back to it I was not happy with the interview and not because of Doug, it was because of myself. I thought I sounded horrible and I was going to just write the assignment and ask Doug for another audio interview. But in hindsight that would not have been fair to Doug so I deal with what I had. All I have to say is thank God for Audacity.

What I learned from my brother Doug is that he grew up in East Orange, New Jersey, he started playing the trumpet at an early age but guitar is his love. He played traditional Jazz in high school while playing in his R&B neighborhood band. I learned that Doug had a love for radio but put it on the back burner for a minute into technology caught with us and that is how the Sunday Soundtrack came about.

It was Doug who recorded this interview so I'm thankful for this so much. I've since come across an application that will record Skype calls which means I now have the capability of reaching out to people that I have had an interest in for many years and this will not just be in reference to music. I wish to interview people in the world of food, technology, web design, writers. I said earlier about semi-monthly is because when I edited the interview with Doug is that it takes times so my hats off to podcasters who does it all - the interviewing, the questions they have to come up with, the editing...it takes time.

I hope you enjoy this interview, let me know what you liked and disliked about the interview (be respectful) because the more I get feedback the better interviewer I will become. The Joy of Computers

I don't mind technology...I love it I do. But one thing I don't dig is when it comes to installing a new hard drive. I'm lying...not installing the hard drive, I love stuff like that. Googling "how to uninstall and install, seeing the guts of a computer is so cool. But, when it comes to installing the OS (operating system) this is when it's like, "Oh boy."

I recently bought a 500GB hard drive to replace the 160GB hard drive in my Acer Aspire 5100 that I bought back in 2006. Processor is 1.60GHz, not bad...I have 3GB of RAM installed, again, not bad. It began running really sluggish and I had defragged the hard drive, ran CCleaner in regards to deleting the temporary files from the web and it still ran slow. One thing that makes a hard drive run slow is when the hard drive doesn't have that "buffer" zone and I think that was really the problem.
I don't know why Acer partitioned this hard drive instead of just having the computer see just one drive...that may have been the problem...but back to my topic.

For a while I had wanted to replace the hard drive with a larger one and now I did. What was really a great surprise is that the 5OOGB hard drive I thought I bought actually turned into a 640GB hard drive. How cool was that! (Remember when you had to sell your first born just purchase a 250GB hard drive, let alone a 320GB hard drive) So now the funny begins after I pop this baby I first installed the recovery disc I made for my Acer which came with Vista. Vista, although, was not the best OS to come from Microsoft did alright by me. It's the updates. Right now I'm in my second day. Thank God me and Queen is blessed with high speed internet...can you imagine trying to do these updates on dial-up!?!

***shudder***

I kid you not people, I'm in my second day of just Vista updates and I haven't installed Windows 7!!! Why did I not just install Windows 7. In hindsight I could have but I dig some of the desktop pictures that came with Vista. (I'm like that way with my ol' Thinkpad buddy the T20. Whenever I do a clean install on her I always install Windows 98, 98 Plus, Windows 2000, and then XP...again, I dig the desktop wallpaper and some of the screen savers). When it comes to updates Microsoft has plenty and I do mean PLENTY. And before you Apple fan-boys and fan-girls begin to try badmouthing Windows machine, I had a Mac and it's the same. What's amazing is how many updates have come down the pike in just a short time. The updates I'm installing is just for the OS alone! Just wait until I install MS Office 2003.

~~Right at this very moment~~ Around 8pm I had ~~I have~~ a total of 292.5MB of updates I'm installing and this is not including the updates I began with last night and this is not going to include the updates from Vista Service Pack 2 and then Windows 7 and Service Pack 1. I'm looking at Saturday when all of this is complete and I'm not joking....well, maybe not Saturday...maybe late Friday night.

The cool thing about clean installing is that you can map out what you really need and what you don't. I'm learning the more I do this the less I want on my machine (applications) regardless of the power of my computer. Whether it's an older machine or a new machine sometimes it's good to begin from scratch no matter how painful it is at installation time.

I Believe I Have Found My App For Recording Skype Interviews

After playing around with different ways of trying to record Skype conversations I found a free program, "Call Graph" the quality is pretty cool. {Now for the add free version you can pay $12 per year for a subscription but why do that when you plunk down just $13 more and get the one time fee? I think I will do that and I may also buy Pamela (http://pamela.biz) I remember a while back people talk about this app and I hear it's pretty good as well.} When it records the conversations it captures my voice in one channel and the other person's voice in the other channel.
What's really cool is when I pulled it into Audacity it pulled the recorded conversation with both channels and then I formatted it to mono (when it comes to recording voice it's best to record in mono). I've been trying to find a program that would allow me to do this because hopefully in months to come I may begin recording interviews.

For me it's scary because this is a new venture I will be jumping into in the world of podcasting but you have to challenge yourself, right?

The first recording you will hear is the split recording and then the second recording with be the channels combined...pretty cool I must say and again...I love technology and I love being a geek.

This is a recording of me and my geek brother, Luis Lauranzon. Excuse me laughing because of how Luis says, "nothing". If you know Luis you know what I'm talking about but again the quality is pretty nice.

Another Reason Why I Need to Invest into a MacBook Pro

I posted this link a couple of days ago in regards to how some of the computer makers on the Windows side made a deal with the record industry when it comes to recording with your laptop. The stereo mix option has been purposely removed to prevent from recording with your laptop.
Thank goodness Windows XP still gives you this option. I was looking into this because I notice on my HP G-60-549DX model does not have the Stereo Mix option and I wish to begin recording skype calls with my pc for future interviews. I have Windows 7 machines but I have a XP machine that has that option for me.

"Dear ALL,
This Stero MIX problem has started with Vista and now windows 7.. And that this MISSING OF STEREO MIX has nothing to do with SOUND DRIVERS whatsoever...

This HAPPENS BECAUSE OF an AGREEMENT WHICH has been signed by The Music Recording Industry and those PC-Laptops Manufacturers such as DELL, ACER, SONY VAIO to TAKE STREO MIX off windows Vista and 7..
That's why this PROBLEM would happen with these BRANDS such as DELL, VAIO, ACER, etc. But it would be OK with Fujitsu, Toshiba, ASUS etc.. And there would be NO PROBLEM AT ALL if you RUN your PC-Laptops with Windows XP..

I worked as PC technician since 1994 .. and this is the first problem that NO ONE want to answer, even though THEY KNEW..
Since the starts of Windows Vista - there have been many customers have sent their written complaints to Microsoft, DELL, VAIO, ACER (now Gateway) (Me too) but there has been no OFFICIAL EXPLANATION except EVASIVE responses concerning drivers or windows errors...

If YOU people want your Stereo Mix back...You must start a CLASS ACTION against those Manufacturers.. Starting a CAMPAING STOP BUYING these BRANDS (Vaio, Acer, Dell etc) and tell THEM OUT LOUD why we boycott them....

That's all."

I've lost the "fun" in music. I was allowing myself to stress when it came to putting my podcast together and I that is my fault.
To be honest I lost my sense to make podcasts with so much going on in my life and then I saw the movie, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World". I've seen the movie I know about 10-11 times now and it brought me back to a fun time. Listening to silly songs with great riffs and great music with cool sounds. I love the movie and I love the music in the movie so it got me to thinking, why not put a playlist together, no rhyme...no reason...just fun. Like a playlist you may hear in a Old Navy store (which by the way is one of my favorite stores, I still have my painter's jeans and cargo pants from that store since 2008)

I wanted this podcast to bring a smile on your face because I have listen to the playlist quite a bit and it brings a smile to my face. I just remember in my youth putting together a mixtape that would take me to another time and place. My closest friends by from the ol' neighborhood never got my taste in music but over time it didn't matter because that was my time, my escape time. I have always realized that with music for me, if it sounded good to me it was added to my music library. Rather R&B, soft rock, pop, rock, country...from Parliment/Funkadelic to Aerosmith to Glen Cambell to Bobby Womack to The Carpenters...if it moved me in my music line up it would go.

The tracks are all over the place in the first half of the podcast then toward the end you know I had to come to my senses and mellow you out right? I have four tracks from the "Scott Pilgrim" soundtrack including "We are Sex Bob-Omb" (I have a secret crush on Kim Pine), I also have tracks from one of my all time favorite duo, Special EFX. "Slice of Life" is and will be one of my favorite albums from this group. George Jinda is surely missed, his gift of playing the percussion is close to another great percussionist, Paulinho da Costa. If you don't have that LP in your library you need to get it. I also have a track in line up from Elvis Presley...love him/hate him, you have to admit, the man had some hits and with the remix by Paul Oakfield is a true treat. The one track by Samantha James I can listen to over and over. I love the track "Rise"...so much of an upbeat, uplifting track. I love the vocal arrangements, the music arrangements. I think you will dig the track.

I don't think I have brought you a track by Acoustic Alchemy in a minute so I through one of my favorite track by them in this line up and you know I had to put a track or two from Donald Fagen and Steely Dan, "Pixeleen" goes out to Lauren, Shawn, Beth, and Kathleen...when I hear that song I think of you all while "Morpth the Cat" I think of Jason Smith(Macedonia) Jason and Veronica(two of the coolest podcasters in New York), my sister in photography AMarie, DJ Diva. I have a couple of tracks by Jonathan Butler, one track is instrumental the other is vocal. It's one thing when you're bad on the axe but have skills vocal wise...killer combo. I have a track by Prefab Sprout. To me Paddy McAloon has to be on of the baddest music writers. From when I first heard the album, "Two Wheels Good" I was hooked on his music arrangement and the harmony with him and Wendy Smith...classic. And not having a track in there by the one and only Michael Franks? That's crazy talk! Rendezvous In Rio, very mellow tune, I can't wait for his new album to drop. I bring the line to a close with a track by a great poetic and gifted artist who is no longer with us, Gil Scott-Heron. "I'm New Here" cuts me deep because it takes me to a time when I realize I had to my hometown and to the "Big City" so to speak. I will make it my mission to seek out his music. Too many times I have griped about "there's no good music out here" and I let this genius work pass right by me.

90 minutes of music coming at you and this may be the last podcast from me for a minute with school beginning next week and working I've come to realize what's truly important because although I love producing podcasts this is not putting food on our table so I think you won't mind the extended MLFM episode. Many of the tunes remind me of some of my ol' Vox buddies who we now connect on Facebook. Big thanx to my geek brothers Luis Lauranzon, TGrundy, and Macedonia for their input music wise and thanx to the people who left voice mail drops that are peppered through this playlist. Thank you for taken time out of your busy schedule to do this...I truly appreciate the love. I do know if I will do a podcast like this every year but I felt I had to put this together because sometimes it's cool to throw different genres of music together and see what music stew comes to light.

With this music line up I hope you pay attention to the music, the lyrics and not trip off of the genres and let the music flow through you and over you.

My Thoughts on Mark Gorton and the Music Industry

Do you know anyone that listens to the radio? I mean really, do you? I don't listen to the radio when it comes to music (the only time when that happens is when I'm in the car with my queen when she's driving...I love her but when it comes to listening to commercial radio for me I want to blow my brains out...I really do.) When is the last time you can actually say, "I heard this cool jam on the radio and I have to rush to the record store and buy it!?!"

*crickets chirping*

This ruling that has Mark Gorton paying maybe 1.4 billion dollars to the record industry is pretty steep. I'm not condoning the actions of Gorton because I've never used Lime Wire because of lets be honest, he was stealing...plain and simple. Also Lime Wire was known from maleware and spyware (I couldn't understand why people used this knowing many times they computers were getting infected). But one thing is true, Lime Wire is not the main culprit of the declining of music sales.

We have been down this conversation road before but what I've come to realize is that I'm older and people say with their mouths they want quality, rather it's music, books, movies, but really want junk. If this was the case, many listeners that buy commercial music would demand quality from the music industry but they don't and to me it's a broken record.

The music industry has always and will always keep the attitude of "the heck with tomorrow, lets see how much money I can make today." To be honest, the music industry has been in trouble for decades and they've known this but don't care. They hide behind cases like this and Napster but to be honest in order to make money you have to spend money and nurture talent and this is what they don't do. The music industry is like the fast food restaurants and again they know it.

Thank God for the internet. Thank God for podcasters. Thank God for music lovers state side and across the world. With so many musicians using recording tools like Logic, Adobe Audition, Sony Acid, Audacity many artists for over an decade now have learned the key to getting music out there...word of mouth via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace(yep...MySpace), PodOmatic, ReverbNation, Soundcloud, Mixcloud. Many artists host their own sites, starting their own record labels. It takes longer but the rewards are greater for these gifted musicians because they realize when quality music is produced many people (like myself) will take the time and write about it and share it with the world. This is why many of the record industry team up with large companies to stifle the internet because we now live in a world where we, the music lovers, can share our thoughts when it comes to what is good and what is garbage.

I don't feel sorry for Mark Gorton but I surely don't feel bad for the music industry, you brought this on yourselves and you continue to bring this on yourselves. This case was not a victory for music lovers, it's a victory of protecting the music industry laziness to invest , grow, and produce great music.

My Thoughts on Derek K. Miller

When I first recorded this music podcast, "Cool Geeks/Cool Cats" it had a great meaning to me because it brought me back to the main reason why I began my podcast...sharing music that I enjoy with the masses on my own terms. I don't think it may have been a favorite for the masses but to me it's has been one of my favorites whenever I go back and listen to it and I listen to this podcast every so often because I think this one show was for the geeks of the world because many times we are in our own little world but is what makes us unique.

Now this podcast has a deeper meaning for me because of the passing of Derek K. Miller this week. His "last post" made me realize how blessed I am and how one should love who there are, appreciate and love the people that mean the world to you. This podcasts jumps out to me because it makes me angry with myself because I wished I would have reached out to Mr. Miller and let him know how much I loved his track, "More Red Than Red". I would have let him know how that tune fits perfect with the flow of the "Windows Weekly" podcast, I would have told him thanks for allowing this for being a free download to share with the world and that I have used his tune at least three times in my podcast shows and that I never grow tired of hearing his creation. I would have wrote him letting him know that he was a very gifted musician.

Although I can't share that with him now I can now share these thoughts with the masses in words because from what I gathered from Derek's wonderful post don't harp on the past but make the world a better by living life to your fullest and to live life through your love ones and share every moment with them.

With Derek's post it pushes me more to write more, photographs more because every moment is precious. 41 years old is too young for anyone to die but when you live your life without unneccassary drama it makes it a little more precious. Derek it seemed he lived his life with no regrets and that's a blessing. In a world where more and more people are having the attitude, "What's in it for me?" Derek was the opposite. It seemed he loved writing, he loved music, and most important he loved his wife and two daughters and the people around him. He loved sharing his knowledge, he had a wonderful sense of humor. It seems Derek loved being a lover of nature and his love for being a geek.

I think Derek would have loved this music line up because it goes from one genre to another and it seems that's the way Derek lived his life, "outside the box" Now when I listen to this podcast it seems every tune a deeper meaning to me in regards to Derek. Funny how you can put together a collection of tunes and it just feels right now and forever. Thank you Derek for sharing your love of music and more important your love for life.

You will be missed.

When I first began putting this podcast together I had come to a point that I was taken a break from the social network world. I had become, well, sick of it all. My post was heading toward the "bleak" of the social medium but as always God always has a way of making me see thing clear and what is really the cause...it's me, it's you, it's how we have allowed some technology to sap the life from us.

The other day while on Facebook, (which I have come to loathe in so many ways) my photographer sister posted a YouTube link featuring Louis CK in which he's on the Conan O'Brien show and is talking about how how ungrateful we have become. As Louie puts it, "Everything's Amazing & Nobody's Happy". He hit the nail on the head. I even had fallen into that, "You owe me everything" kinda of phase. I truly dig comedians because they are truth-tellers.

The past couple of months I've been whining about how my cellphone provider has not provided the update to my brand of Android phone. Now I'm not given these companies a free pass when it comes to updates and I still feel that many times they delay some updates so we as consumers have to purchase a new phone in which then we would have to sign a new 2-year contract (unless you buy the phone new which you will pay an out of the wazoo for a phone that will depreciate quicker than driving a new automobile off a car dealer's lot). I now have Froyo and it's better but the battery now drains a little quicker but here is what I have forgotten. We now have phones that we can talk just about anywhere...ANYWHERE!

We now have televisions that not only have hundreds of channel but with some we can stream movies via internet to watch. He have automobiles with built in navigation systems in them. With all of these wonders many have become spoiled brats. We leave in a time now where many feel the world owes them everything and many haven't contributed anything to make many of these wonders come to past. When looking back I'm glad I did come up in the time of the digital changing age. I came up when Vinyl albums and 45s, cassette tapes and 8-track tapes. I remember that my uncle had a reel to reel tape deck. I remember watching movies on movie projectors at school.

I remember when we had to actually get up from our seat to change the channel on the television. I even remember black and white televisions. But I also remember when the first digital watch came along, the first Sony Walkman cassette/AM-FM portable player (it took 4 AA batteries), I remember having my first computers (Commodore 64 and 128), my first boom-box (it was a Sharp). I remember the first time I saw MTV and VH1 when visiting friends in Champaign, Illinois (the first video I watched on MTV, Billie Jean by Michael Jackson).

I remember first getting my hands on the Apple G3, I thought I died and went to heaven. I remember seeing the artwork of Arthur Radebaugh, I downloaded as many images as I could. As a kid reading comic books and seeing sci-fi movies made me dream about an utopia world by the year 2000. The year 2000 has come and gone and much has changed but in some ways things have become worse. Racism is at an all time high. Although I love the artwork by Radebaugh in many of his work you don't see Blacks in this future and now that we have a Black president we see the hate for Blacks now more than ever. I love the line Louis CK says in another YouTube snippet from one of his comedy shows,

"Let me be clear...I'm not saying that White people are better...I'm just saying being White is clearly better." Classic.

But at the same time I'm realizing how blessed I am now. Think about this...I can make a podcast from my home, my home! Used to be a time if I wanted to do something like this I would have to rent time at an studio, have an engineer to mix the sound but now I with just a laptop, a microphone, audio software, a host site and you're good to go when it comes to sharing the music I love. If I wish to learn many things I can go on YouTube or order something from Amazon or instant message someone in regards to finding the answer to just about anything and as my photography sister mentioned to me, "...technology isn't all that bad. It's all in how you approach it. It enables us to get our stuff out there to people who enjoy what we do. So don't give up."

So what started as a negative and knock against technology and social network turned into something positive for me. Funny how when you keep your mind and heart open how God can bring certain people and music to me to make me realize that he has given me a gift to do the right thing with the wonders of technology. Like my sister, said, "It's all in how you approach it." I have always love technology and I can ever abandon it.

I could have just used Donald Fagen's albums "The Nightfly" and "Kamakiriad" to make this podcasts and maybe one day I will because those songs alone captures my feeling about how I viewed how the future would be but other tunes trickled into my brain as I thought about putting this together so as always, kick back, relax and enjoy the tunes.

Relaxing, Quirky, Timeless.

Words to describe this podcast...fun. The music was fun to find, the podcast mix that my brother in podcasting, Jason Smith aka Macedonia put together was right on the money.

When recording this podcast it hit me on how to describe my podcast to anyone and in a way this is how I describe Jason Smith aka Macedonia's podcast shows. You can't put a finger on his podcasts...he finds the coolest and many times off the cuff music, public service announcements (PSA) to intertwine into his shows. He finds music that I know will not be played on today's radio and his commentary of life in general I wish I could bottle it and sell it because I would be a billionaire.

There are voices that are so cool to me when it comes to my Podcasting family, DJ Diva's outlook on today's music, Nikki's intro with her "Soulrific" podcast, Fave's outgoing personality when it comes to the "Friday Favecast", Doug Fresh's smooth intro and outlook on ambient music when it comes to his "Sunday Soundtrack", Anji Bee's sexy voice or the Sensei (EJ Flavors) when he says, "Let's Do This." When it comes to Macedonia it's how life can throw us curve-balls and they are frustrating but in the end we have to keep swinging to survive and keep our sanity.

What was so cool is how Macedonia put together his mix for this episode. what is so cool is that when you listen to the first half of this show and then Macedonia's mix you would think we collaborated on this episode but we did not. I didn't know what tracks he would use and in the end he captured the true essence of what MyLoveForMusic podcasts deliver...music that makes you smile, relax and makes you dig deep within yourself to discover new and old music because there is good music out here. What I love about my Brother in Podcasting/Brother in Christ is that he allows you into his world even in times of stress and for that he shows life can sometimes be a pain in the "you know what" but for him, myself, and many other people out there music is our outlet...it keeps up from blowing a gasket.

I first heard of Macedonia back in 2006 when Fave interviewed him and from there I was hooked on his podcast. It's a great feeling when you know there is other people in the world that enjoy quality, and sometimes off-beat music and are not afraid to share it with the masses.

Thank you Macedonia for what you do, thank you for taken time out of your busy schedule for putting together a mix for the show and even know we have never met in person, thank you for being a friend.

MyLoveForMusic Episode #21: Spotlight - Atomic Skunk

Here it is 2011 and it seems I have known Rich Brodsky for many years. It's one thing to listen to an musician's work and admire them but when you get a chance to chat with them about the process of their work and then see it come to light it's a blessing. I came across Rich's work (aka Atomic Skunk) music back in 2009 when we first met on Twitter. I have to admit, when you listen to music like myself and a musician post a link to their site to check out their work you kinda shrug your shoulders and hope it's not a hot mess. When Rich posted a link to his music I have to admit, his music made my jaw drop. "Binary Scenes" was the type of music I had been missing in my music life for a while. His music took me back to when I first began listening to sound scape/new age back in the early 90s.

What I love about music is the fact that each musician has their "signature" when it comes to their music. They may have been influenced by other artists but when they find their niche it's like no other and when you hear their music it brings a smile to your face and you know it's their own brand of music and no one can take that away from them. When I hear Nicolay or Phonte, I know it's their own. When I listened to Pink Floyd or Parliment/Funkadelic, Ohio Players, Earth, Wind, and Fire...it was their brand of music. What's really cool about Rich is that his embrace of electronic, natural sounds, acoustic blended into a harmonic music that me take time out and just reflect on how music should be made and now with today's technology musicians can once again take their time and mature their gift and craft.

The second half of the podcast spotlights Atomic Skunk (Rich Brodsky) album "Portal". When first hearing this album back in 2010 I wanted to do a spotlight on this wonderful piece of work but life got in the way and I was dissapointed but sometimes delays are a blessing and I'm glad now to present you this podcast. Rich has just completed his third album, "Alchemy" and what's cool about this album is that this was supported soley by the listeners which is a great feeling because as I have always stated, people love quality music and don't mind putting their money behind gifted artists.

This year has been a roller-coaster ride for me good and bad. This year was a time where I felt I had reached a glass ceiling in regards to this podcast. This year was a time where I saw my income at a all time low. This year was a time where I was questioning my time in attending college...yes, this year was a time of true reflection and in a time it still is a time of self reflection. I wish I could have purchase new music or showcase new music but to be honest I couldn't and in that I realized why I began MyLoveForMusic. It is a podcast where I share what music in my library, music that has brought me peace and serenity. Music that makes me take true reflection of myself.
Music where I mesh compositions together where I think you would never played together on commercial radio or on any podcast for that matter. Am I boasting on myself? Of course not! With this show I try to expose you to artists that you may have never heard of or to have you reflect on them in a new light.

With this year being the way it has been it has made me realize that I need to do what has been put in me in regards to sharing music...just be me. Funny how we lose sight of ourselves when it comes to being ourselves. Many will not admit it but from one time or another we want to belong, we want others to notice us and when we do that I think sometimes we lose what makes us unique. With the playlist I put together I have come to realize that it will put me in a place where I can't be put in a certain category and sometime you will not be recognized until you have moved on to new projects but you have to learn to enjoy the journey, the path you chose to take. The path you take people may take the journey with you and sometimes it may be a lonely journey at times but it is your journey.

My taste of music has taken me on discoveries of finding great artists in many genres and I would not change that for the world. I think that is what my Maker has been trying to keep me focus on: He did not put in me to follow only one category of music. Sometime I forget that and when that happens that is when I lose my way, I lose myself. This year took me on that journey only to bring me back to why I began this exploration of music. Last week I was watching videos on YouTube and it made me realize my love for music spans from Brit artists from the 80s, R&B tunes from the 80s and 90s, ambient, Jazz, New Age, Easy Listening and it brought me back to why I produce MyLoveForMusic and with that this podcast reflects that and why in 2011 it will take that path. I have always loved music that is peaceful but powerful, music that makes a person slow down from the rat race of life brings a smile to your face.

Thank you everyone for taking this voyage with me for close to 3 years now. 2011 I will make a promise to myself to buy new music while still bringing music from my library. 2011 I hope to reach out to more artists in the realm of great instrumental music but not putting pressure on myself in regards to these podcasts because I have found when I take myself too serious this is when I get myself uptight, depressed, and just not fun to be around so 2011 will truly be "My Love For Music".
