We want to leave you with this quote from Mayor Nutter, telling us what 4th of July means to him and to the City of Philadelphia;

“I think the 4th of July is really about celebrating freedom. It’s about recognizing our independence as a nation. For Philadelphians, it reminds us that our great city is the birthplace of freedom, liberty and democracy in the United States of America. We should all reflect on the deeper meaning of this day and make sure we don’t take our freedoms for granted. Freedom is not free. It must be protected. You have to fight for it. And of course, this City is the best place to celebrate the 4th of July. It’s about fun, but it’s also about freedom.”

Celebrating Our Freedom! We at MyPhillyAlive wish you all a fantastic 4th of July and enjoying the many activities and festivals leading up to our Nations birthday. Happy 4th of July!

’ A Social Media Contest for a Worthy Cause Supporting Philabundance’

It’s that time of year again when it comes to the Business Journal’s social media contest.

We are excited to participate this year and entered last years Business Journal’s first ever social media contest, in which we made it to the third round.

The contest is held in 40 plus cities through out the United States. Obviously we are participating in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s group. Each company participating is placed in one of three categories; Small, Medium, or Large. The contest started June 3 and continues in multiple stages until August 19. The top eight companies after round one move onto round two and so on. Round one ends at midnight on June 17, so we certainly could use your help. The winner of each category when it’s all said and down, after nine total rounds, will be announced on August 20. The winner will have the opportunity to designate a charity to receive a $10,000 donation from the Sponsor in the winner’s name.

It’s very simple. Each company is awarded specific points for the various types of engagement that it receives on the four social media channels that have been selected. Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and LinkedIn. Everything is built into an algorithm, with some types of engagement receiving a higher weight than others. That happens to be a top secret with the Business Journal. You can also help by voting daily, but you are only allowed to cast one per day per company listed. Of course we hope you choose MyPhillyAlive, which is located in the ‘Large’ group.

Considering that we are fond of so many charities located in Philadelphia, it’s very hard to just pick one in the local area. We chose Philabundance for various reasons, even though we support so many other local charities in the City of Brotherly Love.

Philadabundance is a non-profit food bank that serves the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania. Below is some information from wikipedia directly.

The organization was founded in 1984 by Pam Lawler. In the year 2005, it merged with The Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, and the new entity operates under the name Philabundance.

The organization aims to fight hunger by reducing food waste and giving food surpluses to local partners who serve such people.

Philabundance operates through direct service programs, contributing through food cupboards, emergency kitchens, shelters, daycare centers and senior centers. With a network of nearly 500 member agencies, Philabundance runs hunger prevention programs for providing emergency relief, as well as working on long term measures to address hunger in the Delaware valley.

More detailed information about Philabundance.

‘Keeping In Shape or Drinking The Week Away – Which is it?’

It certainly feels like Summer now, even though the official day of summer begins on June 21. Maybe starring at the fountain picture will cool you off on those hot days.

Just when we had 2 whole months of food festivals, it seems like it’s time to get in shape. You can walk the Manayunk Wall, participate in the Manayunk Fit Fest, or enjoy free yoga classes by Dhyana Yoga yoga studios down at Race Street Pier.

If you want to head in the other direction, you can certainly indulge yourself with the many different beer events during Philly Beer Week from May 31 – June 9. Philly Beer Week kicks-off tonight with the Open Tap Ceremony at 6:30 pm at the Independence Visitor’s Center, followed by a beer tasting event. There is also the Irish Festival on June 2 at Penns Landing.

How about the Best of Both Worlds! You can play it right up the middle and enjoy a few good beers and then work the calories out of your system. Now matter how you slice and dice it, there will be fun for all in the whole month of June. Don’t forget to check out the many free events below, especially several of the museums that are opening their doors to the public for free on specific days. However, they do encourage small donations to help, so please keep this in mind, which helps them keep their doors open.

Did you know : Philadelphia was named 1 of the top 10 US travel destinations for 2013. Also named for having the best sandwich in America, #2 in best burgers in the country by Travel + Leisure and in the last 8 months, the city has been recognized for top 10 parks in the world, best cheesesteaks, and #1 in Culture. We can feel that the list will be growing in 2013.

‘ A Slice of Germany in Philadelphia’

Wursthaus Schmitz, the sibling of Brauhaus Schmitz, is operating in the Reading Terminal Market and is located right next to the Flying Monkey. Wursthaus means sausage house, like having a German Deli. This fine German eatery opened in mid November of 2012.

Wursthaus Schmitz Experience & Atmosphere

If you want German music, German beer, then head over to Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street. Otherwise, be prepared to indulge in excellent hot German specialty sandwiches. Anything from the ‘Schmitz’, with Brauhaus Schmitz bratwurst, pork, sauerkraut and mustarad on a pretzel roll; the ‘Bavarian’, with smoked Bauernwurst, Bavarian Cole Slaw, horseradish sauce and fried onions; or the ‘Hungarian’, with smoked Hungarian bratwurst, beef goulash and roasted hot Hungarian peppers.

Chef Jeremy Nolen has brought his creations over to the Reading Terminal Market from Brauhaus Schmitz after doing some testing and is excited about this new challenge. Jeremy told us,

“I am excited about this new venture and being a part of the lunch rush at the market.”

You’ll be pleased to find 11 types of sausages and 6 types of specialty sausages, to include 8 main dishes and 5 specialty sandwiches. You’ll even be treated to their German Patoto Pancakes, Spaetzle, sauerkraut, and other fine German specialty imports.

All of the sandwiches are made on a special bread made daily at Ba Le Bakery on Washington Avenue. The texture is close to German Brötchen, which seems impossible to find in the United States.

At Wursthaus Schmitz, all of the ingredients are housemade, making this little getaway feel like a little piece of German heaven. So why not stop in and be the judge for yourself. Let us know your thoughts and experience.

‘Residents Open their Doors to the Public on America’s Oldest Street’

Did you ever want to meet Ben Franklin? Here is your chance to meet historical figures, to include Sarah Milton, the highly successful seamstress who lived on the Alley, and Ben Franklin himself, on our nation’s oldest continuously inhabited residential street, Elfreth’s Alley. Elfreth’s Alley is located on the historic district section of Old City. Fete Day is June 9th and is a day designated for feasting.

This traditional celebration dates back to the 1930′s. This unique block party will feature private tours of homes that are only opened twice a year to the public, to include Fete Day. There will also be colonial crafts, authentic colonial cookery, artists, live music, story-tellers, and refreshments. Kids will enjoy colonial games, a mock archaeological dig, and a scavenger hunt.

While during the celebration, you can participate in guided tours and hear stories that surround this historic alley. You’ll be told a story about a resident that was hung for joining the British side during the Revolution. You also might hear about why the neighborhood’s reputation was classified as “Helltown” in colonial times.

This event will happen no matter what kind of weather takes place. The proceeds from the event benefit efforts to preserve this National Historic Landmark.

Make that trip to Elfreth’s Alley and see how other’s lived in Colonial times and learn how generations after have continued to preserve, make changes and add to the historic structures.

‘Movies Under the Stars in Philadelphia’

Philadelphia summer nights under the stars with friends, family, loved ones and yes, free movie nights sponsored by Schuylkill River Development Corporation and CSX.

Thanks to Schuylkill Banks, you will be able to enjoy ten different movies this summer at three different locations. Some of these movies are our favorites and are classics. Of course the original Rocky movie is a classic and a Philadelphia favorite.

Starting Thursday, June 13th, the movies will take place every Thursday until August 22nd, except for on July 4th. The movies will usually begin around dusk, between 7:45 pm to 8:30 pm. But you will want to come early, because there will be free snacks, refreshments, and a raffle for a chance to win fantastic prizes from Philadelphia Runner. The Snacks and beverages are provided by Dranoff Properties’ Locust on the Park and Left Bank and DuPont Clear into the Future, depending on the movie location. The snacks will be available on a first-come basis.

Key Tips : You will want to bring a blanket or some chairs to relax on. And don’t forget your picnic basket of goodies. Just be cautious when going to the Walnut Street movies. When crossing the railroad tracks to access Schuylkill Banks, use alternate access points when trains are stopped at the Locust Street or Race Street at-grade crossings. Enjoy your movie!
