This time next week, Shriners will take over Myrtle Beach, marking the first time in more than three years the Southeast Atlantic Shriners Association has had its fall festival here.

Ex-Waccamaw EOC board member arrested

Former Waccamaw Economic Opportunity Council board member Abdullah Mustafa was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with holding a gun to the forehead of a woman described in an Horry County police report as both a former and current girlfriend. The report said Mustafa had a key to the woman’s Little River apartment and her car, and that he entered her bedroom at 5:30 a.m. waving a gun at the woman and a male friend, who were awakened by his appearance. Police said Mustafa was yelling obscenities at the couple and had the gun to the forehead of one of them

All his students at Winthrop University called him “Big Ed,” but it’s likely that many of them realized what a treasure it was having Edmund Lewandowski around “He was humble,” said Mary Lynn Norton, a former Lewandowski student. Despite that humility, the late painter, teacher and mentor made his mark as an American artist long before coming to serve as chairman of the art department at Winthrop in 1973.

S.C. district gets tough on athletes’ grades

In an effort to boost academic achievement, Guilford County schools are putting more than 100 athletes on the bench. The News & Record of Greensboro reported Sunday that at least 111 student athletes in the district are ineligible to play for their high school teams this semester because they couldn’t maintain a grade point average of 2.0, roughly a C, in their spring classes. The new policy came into effect as part of the school system’s effort to enhance the academic achievement of its students.
