Iggy Arroyo Dies in London

Negros Occidental Representative Iggy Arroyo has passed away in London after being off life support, reports say.

Former First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo as saying that Iggy already passed away.

"Support systems were pulled out already thirty minutes ago. My brother passed away already. I'm so sad," the ex-FG was quoted as saying in the report.

Rep. Arroyo was diagnosed with liver cancer last year and sought medical treatment in London.

Arroyo suffered cardiac arrest and was declared “clinically dead” while undergoing medical treatment in London, his brother former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo said.

Woman found dead in San Pablo City

A woman was found dead on a grassy lot inside a subdivision in Barangay San Francisco, this city, last Monday, police said.

Supt. Ferdinand de Castro, San Pablo City police chief, said the body of the victim, Ariane Cabezas-Villamater, a native of Cogeo, Antipolo City, was found lying on a grassy vacant lot inside Green Valley Subdivision, Barangay San Francisco, at about 7 a.m. Monday, 30 meters away from her residence.

De Castro said Villamater sustained bruises on the head and chest, and was believed to have been raped before she was killed.

Head-on collision of two buses snarls traffic in Alaminos, Laguna

Traffic at a major road in Alaminos town in Laguna province was snarled after the head-on collision between two buses on Wednesday morning.

Alaminos police chief Senior Inspector Mederic Villarete said the incident occurred at San Agustin villages, with an undetermined number of passengers hurt. "Initial information namin, so far walang casualty pero may minor injuries nadala sa ospital," he said in an interview over radio dzBB.

He said they are still verifying reports that one of the drivers may have died in the incident. For now, he said police have set up an alternate route for motorists to pass through following the accident.

Villarete also said they are still investigating on who was at fault. "Nag-cause sila ng heavy trafic talaga, (nag-setup tayo ng) alternate route sa San Pablo," he said. - VVP, GMA News

Minor quake hits Laguna

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake hit Sta. Cruz, Laguna early Friday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the quake, which struck at 1:26 a.m., was tectonic in origin.

Intensity II was felt in Sta. Cruz and Nagcarlan in Laguna, and in Lucban, Quezon, said Phivolcs.

No damages were reported and no aftershocks were expected.

Synopsis

Bella Swan is ecstatic --- and nervous. She's on the brink of marrying the love of her life, the charismatic, devastatingly handsome vampire Edward Cullen. As for Jacob (who narrates the middle part of the novel), he tries in vain to imprint on other females, but he cannot forget Bella, especially when he learns of her perilous pregnancy and physical condition. When Bella and Edward's daughter is born, is it possible that this half-human, half-vampire can unite the Cullens and Jacob's shape-shifting La Push clan? Could she be the catalyst for Jacob and Edward's reconciliation? Or does her very existence --- particularly once word of her birth reaches the dangerous Voltari vampire clan --- put everything Bella loves at risk?

Charice Pempengco’s father stabbed dead after drinking session

The estranged father of international singing sensation Charice Pempengco was stabbed dead in San Pedro, Laguna before midnight Monday, police said on Tuesday.

Ricky Pempengco, 40, died on the spot after sustaining two stab wounds in the chest, said Superintendent Kirby Kraft, San Pedro police chief, in a phone interview.

Witnesses identified the suspect as a certain Angel Capili, 35, who is now the subject of a police manhunt.
Police said Pempengco came from a drinking spree and was buying cigarettes from a store near his residence in Barangay Laram when he was stabbed by the suspect.

“It appears to be a drunken skirmish,” said Kraft, who added that both the victim and the suspect were drunk when the killing happened at around 11:30 p.m.

Capili used to live in the same village until he moved out in 2005. He was only visiting his friends on Monday.

Pempengco’s remains were brought to a funeral home also in the town.

It all started with one man’s vision of establishing a haven for artists.

In the 1980’s, Jose P. Viana, better known as “Sonny,” bought a piece of property in barrio Sta. Cruz, San Pablo City in Laguna. Situated at the foot of Mount Cristobal, the obscure barrio (also called ‘barrio Putol’) lies almost at the boundary of the famous Dolores of Quezon Province.

Sonny built a modest quarter as a weekend and summer get-away for himself and close friends. Eventually, ‘Putol’ became not only as a hide-away for Sonny but made his permanent address there. Through the years, improvements and more durable structures were built to accommodate an ever increasing influx of friends and guests visiting the place. After more than 20 years, what used to be an idle land is now a sanctuary built by Sonny Viana who unselfishly bequeathed it to the Barangay ni Jose Association, Inc.

The Barangay ni Jose Association, Inc. (BJAI) was established for the sole purpose of providing a better future for its members in their advanced years. Comprised of mostly professionals in their forties and above, its members are involved in the field of arts and various discipline of entertainment and other forms of businesses. Reason to have BJAI members think and plan for their imminent old age was to answer the call and need to have a quality life without having to be a burden to their respective families and to the society. Living as a community, the Association shall provide the needed daily and medical requirements as well as spiritual needs of its members.

Although, BJAI has mapped out a more viable future for its present members, the association is not only a self serving group. It has outlined projects that will service the constituents of Sta. Cruz and its neighboring barangays. It will tap local resources and products that can be marketed throughout the whole nation and the world. A program to help the young attain an improved life by providing better education and hands-on training through scholarships and aides edification. BJAI will promote appreciation and preservation of our culture and likewise help the local talent to develop the edge to be competitive internationally. Preservation of our heritage and nurturing love for what is artistic and creative.

BJAI is unique in its conception. BJAI is distinctive in its very essence. BJAI aims high in its mere existence.

19-yr-old massacres couple, 3 children in San Pablo City

A 19-year-old man armed with a bolo killed his five neighbors, including three children, in San Pablo City, Laguna province, last night.

Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro, San Pablo City police chief, said the suspect identified as Ernie Tambuong is already in police custody.

De Castro identified the massacre victims as Bai Rendon, 40; his wife Maricell, 24 and children JM, 7; jomarie, 5; and two-month-old baby Mary Joy.

He said a sixth member of the family, an eight-year-old child, escaped the gruesome massacre by crawling out of the house during Tambuong's alleged killing frenzy.

De Castro said that the suspect was seen entering his neighbor's home in Barangay Santa Filomena around 11;30 p.m.

He said that Tambuong is holding an old grudge against Rendon, whom he suspected of hacking to death his horse.

Multiple murder charges are being readied against the suspect.

San Pablo City Bank Robber, Dead

LAGUNA, Philippines - One of the 3 suspects who allegedly robbed a rural bank in San Pablo City, Laguna last September 22 was killed in a shootout with police Sunday morning in the city, authorities said.

Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz, Laguna police director, identified the suspect as Joel Canlas, 29, a resident of Barangay San Isidro, Catanauan, Quezon.

Canlas was an alleged member of Gerona robbery holdup group.

Cruz said Canlas was tagged as one of the 3 armed men who robbed the United People's Rural Bank in M. Paulino St., Barangay 3-D in San Pablo City around 12:45 p.m.

Canlas' 2 other cohorts remain unidentified, police said.

Investigations revealed that Canlas was onboard a motorcycle when he was flagged down by police at a checkpoint in Tropical Park Subdivision in Barangay Concepcion around 2:30 a.m.

Instead of stopping, police said Canlas pulled out his caliber .38 revolver and started shooting the authorities, who returned fire, killing him instantly.

Canlas was rushed to Panlalawigan Pagamutan ng Laguna but was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.

The robbers was able to cart away P1.5 million from the bank and escaped on board a vehicle parked a few meters away from the bank.

Sources who declined to be identified said the bank robbery could be an inside job as police were investigating one security guard assigned during the robbery.

Man shoots self after killing 2 men in San Pablo City

A man shot two brothers dead and wounded a third person in San Pablo City Wednesday night before committing suicide by turning the gun on himself, the police said on Thursday.

John Detaunan, 23, and his younger brother, Johanes, 17, died instantly, while their cousin, Jesus Sumadsad, 24, remained in critical condition in a hospital in the city, San Pablo City police chief Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro said in a phone interview.

Following the rampage, witnesses told police, the shooter, identified as Ariel Almare, around 30-35 years old, walked about 30 meters from the crime scene and shot himself in the head, said De Castro.
He said investigators learned that Almare and Sumadsad were fighting over a married woman, as they were also heard arguing at the woman’s home in Barangay (village) San Antonio 1 earlier Wednesday evening.

The police withheld the woman’s name

De Castro said Sumadsad and the Detaunan brothers went to a computer shop in San Antonio at around 11 p.m. and found Almare there. Almare immediately left but returned soon after, armed with a .38 caliber pistol, and began shooting his victims.

John died of gunshot wounds in the back and neck while Johanes was shot in the neck. Sumadsad had a gunshot wound in the neck.

Clinical trial for dengue vaccine held in Laguna

Clinical testing for a dengue vaccine was successfully carried out in San Pablo, Laguna, with further tests to be done in Cebu City, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The vaccine, which being developed by a pharmaceutical company, could be made available to the public by 2014.

“It is so promising that we are confident that by 2014, we will have the dengue vaccine,” said Dr. Eric Tayag, head of the DOH's National Epidemiology Center.

The vaccine is in phase 3 of development and is considered as the most advanced dengue strategy in the world.

It can fight 4 strains of dengue, health officials said.

“When you give the child the vaccine, the child develops adequate levels of antibodies and these antibodies mean that the child will be protected from the disease,” said Dr. Rose Capeding.

According to the DOH, individuals diagnosed with dengue have reached 45,333 this year, with deaths reaching 267.
