Detect Mobile Browsers - Mobile User Agent Detection PHP

Detecting the user’s browser type and version is helpful in web applications that harness some of the newer bleeding edge concepts. With the browser type and version you can notify users about challenges they may experience and suggest they upgrade before using such application. Not a great idea on a large scale public site; but on a private application this type of check can be helpful.
In an active project of mine we have a pretty graphically intensive and visually appealing user interface which leverages a lot of transparent PNG files. Because we all know how great IE6 supports PNG files it was necessary for us to tell our users the lack of power their browser has in a kind way.

Searching for a way to do this at the PHP layer and not at the client layer was more of a challenge than I would have guessed; the only script available was written by Gary White and Gary no longer maintains this script because of reliability. I do agree 100% with Gary about the readability; however, there are realistic reasons to desire the user’s browser and browser version and if your visitor is not echoing a false user agent we can take an educated guess.
I based this solution off of Gary White’s original solution but added a few things:
I added the ability to view the return values as class constants to increase the readability

Dynamic Dependant DropDown List: US States & Counties

I was googling for a way to show a drop down menu with states that populates another menu with counties from the selected state. I found a nice dynamic dependent drop down script (with categories & subcategories) at dreamwebstore.com. However, adding over 2000 counties in a single JavaScript file is not such a good idea because such a script is quite big (200KB+) and in many cases (a slow internet connection, some downloads in progress etc.) it will take some time to load.

I’ve decided to keep the counties from each state in separate files. For instance, if we select Hawaii state (with 5 counties), only the hi.js file will load which has only a size of 515 bytes. To do this I’ve used the powerful JavaScript library JQuery.

One of the websites I manage had been experiencing tremendous use in bandwidth. “Sweet!” we thought, a solid boost in traffic is a good thing. But as time went by, it kept going up and up in an unreal way - something was awry. After checking the log files, I saw that the 3 bots mentioned above seemed to be literally attacking the website. After some Googling, I found that some or all of these robots have run amuck on other websites too, and are generally worthless as far as supplying any valuable traffic - so I just blocked them all by placing the following in my .htaccess file:

Goal is to provide a usable geo location framework for mobile websites/widget applications. It wraps the underlying platform specific implementation through a simple JavaScriptAPI that is aligned to the W3 Geolocation API Specification..

Usage Scenario
The framework provides two key methods, it determines if the handset has client side geo location capabilities and one method to retrieve the location (of course only after a request for permission). So a mobile web site that provides location based services can first determine if the client has client side geo capabilites and ask him to assist him in finding his location. If no geo capabilities are given or they are disabled the site can fallback on a manual location input method and use a geodata database/service to map the input to a pair of latitude/longitude coordinates.

One thing that is quite nice is that we now have the ability to create gradients in our pages just from CSS code, and without the use of any images.

The good news is that there is web browser support for CSS gradients in Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer (Opera will most likely add it soon too). The bad news is that, for a couple of reasons, the implementation in each web browser is different from the other. In IE’s case, it’s because it’s based on their ancient approach that stems form IE 5.5. For WebKit-based web browsers (like Safari and Google Chrome), they were the first ones to suggest it, based on the approach for canvas, but this was later changed by the CSS WG, and the new syntax is now the one implemented in Firefox (and I guess this syntax will later make into WebKit-based web browsers as well).
