"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." Learning, seeking, taking calculated risks, these are all about creating opportunity and getting yourself prepared. I am sure you have probably heard they saying, "I would rather be lucky than good." I wholeheartedly disagree. The difference between a lucky person and an unlucky one almost always comes down to preparation and attitude.

I frequently hear people that aren’t successful saying about those that are, "they are just lucky." Successful people aren’t just "lucky." They were prepared and in the right mindset when opportunity presented itself. A big part of this is associating with and befriending successful people you can learn how to be prepared when your opportunity comes.

I have seen people with tons of potential and countless opportunities waste it all because of poor decisions in picking their relationships. I have watched as person very close to me destroyed our relationship for a fleeting moment of fun with new friends. I have seen the hurt in her eyes, heard the regret in her voice, as she wished that time could be reversed and different roads traveled. Unfortunately the past cannot be undone, but mistakes in it can be learned from.

Trust me I know how easy to get caught up into a highly social unproductive lifestyle. It feeds on itself until you don't even realize how non-productive you really are. I would encourage you to examine your relationships and choices and ask yourself if they are beneficial and constructive. Honestly ask, Do they make you a better person? If not end it. I know that sounds harsh but in the end it will do you good.

Find people that encourage you, make you better, and inspire you to be better - to be great. Seek out people of like mind, with similar ideals and goals. Develop relationships with people of high moral character that have lofty goals. Find risk-takers, not reckless individuals, as you will find that taking more calculated risks, and through focused action "luck," that intersection of preparation and opportunity, will find you.

Today, many of us want to back in our jobs and go to work for ourselves. However, the difference between those who want it and those that actually do it is staggering. Those that do make the attempt have two options open to them. Create their own sole proprietorship or create and affiliate marketing business. Both can be quite productive if they are successful.

Business requires a great deal of work despite the avenue you take. The more you’re put in the more you are likely to get back. However, the sole proprietorship requires much more time and commitment and a much greater degree of risk. Creating your own business is extremely difficult. Unless you have a unique idea that is marketable you are going to have compitition with other businesses. You have to create stragedies to attract customers away from the already well known businesses in your area and over to yours. If you succeed the rewards can be immense but if you fail you could loose everything.

Affiliate marketing businesses provide several advantages in this area. First, you are marketing products that are already in existence. Fairly known brands are not so hard to sell especially if they have a good reputation. Good and trusted products will attract customers much faster than something new and unknown. Affiliate marketing takes care of all of this for you.

Being a sole proprietor is incredibly risky. If your business fails like the vast majorities do your source of income has ended. Depending on how much debt your business had and how your financed the venture, you could loose much more than income.

By using this method, people who are interested in your product or service will see your article, view you as an expert in the subject, and will visit your website. Even if you cannot write or do not have any knowledge on the subject on which you are promoting (for example for you run an affiliate website), you can always hire a writer to do the work for you. What’s Your Web 2.0 Game Plan?

Today, this post is all about using Web 2.0 tactics to really drive the traffic to your site. Since I came across Jack Humphrey (who is the king of blog marketing)a few months ago, I have literally been hooked on this web 2.0 stuff. Why? Because it’s an easy way to drive targeted traffic. Master it and use it each day, and you don’t have to pay for traffic, get other people to send you traffic or anything like that.

There are many web 2.0 traffic generation tactics, and you just need to find which ones work for you, how they work, and setup up a system to work them. There is a product which I just lanuched called Web 2.0 Traffic Secrets, take a look at that, put it to work and enjoy the traffic. Continue your education with web 2.0 strategies, and you can constantly add to your plan for even more traffic.

Since I run so many content sites, I’ve actually hired someone to do nothing but web 2.0 traffic tactics for all my content sites. For my sites I have that are marketing related, I’m even using web 2.0 traffic tactics for them. It’s been nice not having to harass JV partners day after day, or pay for advertising. My web 2.0 traffic tactics have kept sales coming in.

Now let me say that with your Internet marketing related sites, you wont want to JUST rely on web 2.0 traffic. If it weren’t for my JV partners, I wouldn’t make about 70% of the money I make, so never put all your eggs in one basket.

With my Adsense sites, I use web 2.0 traffic and article marketing, and that’s the same for my niche sites that I sell niche info products from. Yep, for those of you that don’t know, I actually dabble outside of Internet marketing too. IM is where my passion is though, so it’s where I do most of my “stuff”. :)

Knowing When To Walk Away From The Table

Do you know what separates the professional gambler from the hack on the street? It’s the ability to know when to walk away from the table. If you’re wondering what this has to do with making a living online, it has everything to do with it. This article is going to explain this, hopefully, in plain enough English so that it’s crystal clear.

Some sites and some businesses are destined to fail right from the start. Sad to say, but it’s true. But why? Why is it that so much promise can be shot to heck right out of the starting gate? Well, there are several reasons for this.

The first one is that many people who do start their own business don’t do the proper research that is required in order to give their business the best chance of succeeding. This starts with the simple task of making sure that the product or service that you’re trying to sell actually has enough of a demand that the resulting sales are sufficient enough to justify your expense.

The second is seeing if the existing competition, even if there is a big demand, isn’t putting out a product that is better and cheaper than yours. Just because you have something great and people want it doesn’t mean it is going to sell if somebody else is selling that same product for less and on top of that, the product they’re selling is top notch. That’s tough to compete with.

Then of course there is the problem with free information. Just because there is a demand for what you are offering, doesn’t mean that people are going to be willing to part with their hard earned money if the same information, or at least a good part of it, is available for free. That’s why so many times you’ll do your keyword research and find that there are many daily searches but very few competing sites and almost no paid ads. The reason is, more often than not, because the information is freely available.

And of course there is more to this, but the point is, when the foundation of your business is shaky because of poor or no research, what is going to happen is that after you launch your business, you’ll see no sales for weeks, maybe months. Naturally, there are other factors such as advertising, but more often than not, it’s the foundation that’s the problem. That’s when it’s time to realize that you need to walk away from the table and try something else.

It’s a tough thing to do, to admit that you misjudged your market. But doing so can save you many wasted months or even years promoting something that nobody wants.

Renew Your Customers Again and Again

There have been times when my marketing colleagues sit in a room and discuss current customers who have subscribed to a service - wondering how to get them to renew. Unfortunately, this is the wrong conversation to have. The conversation should be about marketing activities that begin from the moment a sales is made.

The best time to renew a client is from the first day after a sale. You need to provide evidence of value to your existing customers from day one… not just day’s before their service expires. Do you have products or services that must be renewed on a regular basis?

Think about engagement. Do you engage your customer in a dialog throughout the year? There are a number of tactics for doing so that will help you engage your customer, develop a relationships and prove value.

1. Newsletters or announcements. Each month, give yourself and your company a reason to reach out to your customers with information that’s valuable to them. Don’t underestimate the power of frequent communication. Be flexible with your content and include opportunities to solicit feedback from your customers.

2. Customer surveys. Ask your customers through an online survey what matters most to them. Show them that their opinion matters. But don’t stop there. Once you ask them to complete a survey, college the responses and analyze them. Once you have something meaningful to share, distribute your findings. Customers will see the value your provide and develop more trust in you and your services.

3. Share best practices. Whether it’s a white paper, brief, or forum, share information you’ve learned from you customers and distribute to a larger group. Share these findings in various formats. This shows that you value your customers’ time and want to make them successful.

4. Invite your customers to online events. Teleconferences, webex presentations, etc. that can help your customer better utilize your product or service is another way to keep them engaged. Keep them informed of updates and changes and provide ongoing training and support.

These are just a few of the tactics for communicating the value of your products and services to your customers. When it comes time to renew, you won’t have to sell. Your customers will inherently know and feel that value you’ve provided over the past year.

Remember, the time to renew is now. Don’t wait until days before the subscription is about to end to make your first contact. As they say, get out in front of the curve. Over time, this strategy will help you exceed your sales goals and allow you to develop a large following.

What To Sell During A Recession: Part 2 - Little Luxuries

There has been a tremendous response to the first article on what to sell during a recession and it has sparked a number of interesting conversations. One of these conversations revolved around the topic of how people who have filled their lives with luxuries like expensive cars, clothes, club memberships, etc. satisfy their urge for luxury when they lose the means to support the habit.

The answer to my question is: Little Luxuries!

My girlfriend calls it “Lipstick and Lacy Underwear Time.” When women who normally buy Coach handbags and Prada shoes fall on hard times, they console themselves with ‘affordable luxuries’ like expensive lipstick and lingerie. They are able to buy something expensive for its product category, but the category itself is far cheaper than what they have been buying - so they can still lead that life of mini-extravagance without going bankrupt.

There are hundreds and thousands of these ‘affordable luxuries’ that people will turn to during the hard times. Gourmet coffee and candy treats tend to do well. Magazines about expensive lifestyles also sell. Memberships in places like CostCo will be on the rise as people look to get a little more for a little less. Trader Joe’s affordable gourmet foods will satisfy the urge for many. And other low-cost luxuries like sunglasses, watches, and (of course) lipstick and lingerie will become the focal point for people looking to ‘treat themselves’ to a little something special.

How To Capitalize On The ‘Little Luxury’ Mindset

The best way to capitalize on this mindset of ‘little luxuries’ is to simply rewrite the marketing copy for the things you are selling right now. Position your existing products and services as ‘affordable luxuries’. Encourage people to ‘treat themselves’ to your products because they are far more valuable that what is being charged.

Simply re-framing the perception of your product can shift the mental gears of your customers and give them permission to spend a little money with you.

Of course, you can also create products that are designed to supply many of the feelings of luxury at reduced costs. Or, you could simply reduce the costs of buying your products.

Another tactic that may work instead of lowering prices is to allow payments to be made in installments so that the initial cost of purchase is much lower.

What To Sell During A Recession

The financial news is pretty clear these days: The United States economy is in a deep recession and the world economy is coming along for the ride. To many, it seems like a bad time to try and sell products online - but they couldn’t be more wrong.

An interesting thing happened on ‘Black Monday.’ As the bottom fell out of the stock market and trillions of dollars in investor wealth vanished into thin air, I actually had a pretty good day in my information publishing business. I made sales as an affiliate, I sold some products from my own product line, and I earned income from ads on my various blogs and websites. (Of course, I lost plenty of money on my investment portfolio!)

People may change their focus and priorities during a recession, but they don’t stop buying things.

When people are feeling ‘rich’ and there is plenty of cash and credit floating around, you don’t have to try hard to sell products. Even lazy marketers can make a few bucks riding trends and copying other people’s marketing methods.

But, when fear grips the markets (and people’s wallets) you have to have spend a little more time and energy to find or create the products that will sell.

What Will People Buy Right Now?

Think for a minute about what your friends and family are discussing right now when it comes to the economy and their jobs. Many are probably trimming back spending on ‘luxury’ items. Others are trying to stretch the useful life of products they have been just throwing out and replacing in the past.

Instead of a new car, it’s new brakes on the old car. Maybe you know someone who is learning to cook and bake from scratch to avoid the cost of expensive pre-packaged foods in order to stretch the grocery money a little further each week. You may even know people who are scrambling to trim their lifestyle and sell off non-essential items in their homes to keep up the payments on a house after their spouse lost a job.

In every one of these cases and more there are opportunities for smart marketers. Information about car repair, selling on eBay, and meal planning are easy sells in a difficult economic climate. You can also teach people how to make things for themselves to save money (think knitting, sewing, crochet, woodworking, etc.)

There is also a huge market for ‘frugal living’ resources. These folks may not like to spend money on store-bought cleaning products, clothes, and packaged foods, but they will buy inexpensive info products that teach them how to make their own versions of popular products for pennies.

Plenty of people are in desperate need of credit and budget counseling too. It is amazing how few people actually know how to create a household budget and use it. I don’t know many. You can get away without this kind of knowledge when times are good, but when the money pool dries up, these are the skills that keep you from going bankrupt. If you know anything on the subject, now is the time to get that information into a product.

Real value is created in our economy when people like you and me create new and valuable products and sell them to others who need them. As our businesses grow, we pay for things like payment processing, web hosting, and software. We also hire bookkeepers and other folks to manage our business. We purchase computers, video cameras, audio recorders, and more to create new products to sell. And, the list goes on.

In short, it’s people like you and me getting to work that will ultimately start rebuilding this shattered economy.

Don’t let a recession get you down. Let it inspire you to create instead.

What Are You Passionate About?

Life holds us by the horns and tell us that our lives need to be run a certain way. The stresses of every day life are the ones that we give the most attention to leaving our aspirations and dreams to fall by the way side. It is our responsibilities, expectations and perceived obligations that are the reason we move in and out of our created world every day. But, there was once passion in our lives and that passion can still be reborn in our newer, more adult lifestyles.

In order to attempt a self-help method of reintroducing happiness and passion into our lives, we must first ask ourselves a few questions. What made us happy as children? What life goals did we have when we were young? What did we want to be?

Finding that thing that makes you want to get out of bed every morning, that thing that makes you whistle while you work, is the first step in finding happiness. Too often, we look outside of ourselves to find something to make our lives a little better. We seek more money, a new car or house, a better relationship-and all the while we neglect our true needs.

There are those that have given up the things they wanted most in life in order to be what they were expected to become. The woman who gave up her dream of becoming a CEO in order to raise the family. A father who put away those model trains once life got in the way because they were childish and there simply was not enough time. These were the dreams we allowed to falter because life expected something or we perceived life expected something more of us than we had time to give.

Rediscovering your passion may actually be harder than you think it should be. After lying stale in our minds for so long, those small things that once drove us often become alien in nature and need to be rekindled and reworked in order to find a place in our every day lives. The best path is to revert to your youth. Think back to what things made you most happy. Remember the passions that made you smile and the hobbies that once held such a high importance in your life and make room for those passions again.

Once you discover your passion, pursue it! For some, it may be scary to step outside of the norm and onto a path less traveled. But personal growth only happens when we extend ourselves beyond our usual boundaries. You don’t have to neglect your responsibilities to pursue your passion. It may simply be to take an art class at a local community center or you may find that you wish to switch careers and become a graphic designer. Determine what you are passionate about and then find ways to embrace it.

No amount of money or praise at work can compare to the feeling you will get from reintroducing that long lost passion back into your life. There is a euphoria that surrounds a passion, a healing nature that makes all the wrongs of the world disappear and the work entailed in making that passion a part of your aging life, is key to living a fulfilled life.

No one more moment should pass in your life without the time being taken to realize that passion that once drove your youth. Take that time back, leave the guilt at the door and reintroduce yourself to the person you always wanted to be and more. There is nothing better than reliving youth to bring back the happiness you once knew.

How To Handle Burnout

It happens to all of us…even me. I admit, it doesn’t happen to me often, but lately I find that I may be taking on more than I can handle. So what do you do when you find that your mind starts to shut down and you just can’t work anymore? Well, these tips have helped me get through the hard times, one of them I happen to be going through right now. I hope you find them helpful as well.

The first thing you have to do is get away from your work. Some people try to work through it. That just makes the problem worse. If your mind is shutting down, give it a rest. One thing I do is to hit the gym. I don’t know what hobbies or interests you have, but there has to be something that you do for relaxation. Do it! Get away from the computer and pretend that business doesn’t exist.

The next thing you need to do, after you have had some time to relax and you realize that you have to get back to work at some point in time, is to sit down and make yourself a schedule. Make it light to begin with. Most likely if you’re burnt out it’s because you’ve been working too hard. So make a schedule that will be easy to follow. I might make one for a day where I write two articles and that’s it. I don’t do anything else. This accomplishes two things. The first is that it makes it so that you’ve at least accomplished something in your day and the second is that it doesn’t put too much of a strain on you at the same time.

Gradually, as you begin to get into the swing of your regular work day, you’ll increase your work load back to a manageable amount. If you found that by doing more than that amount subjects you to extreme stress and possible burnout, then don’t go beyond that point again. Learn to cut yourself off. Yes, it takes a lot of discipline, either when you’re trying to first build your business and trying to do everything that you can, or your business is already very successful and you want to keep it at a certain level.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a tough balancing act and not easy to do. But with time and experience, you’ll get good at it.

If You Don’t Have Initiative You Are Not Going To Make It

I write this post mainly to talk about new bloggers worldwide, but the statement applies in any act of business - both online or offline. Weekly, I get dozens of bloggers telling me how they’re going to make it online - talking about making money online with a blog. Now, unless you undergo in activities like Pay Per Post and Smorty (which will only see you Google slapped and suffer in the long run) you are not going to make money with your blog. I’m talking about the first month - sure, you might make enough to pay the hosting bills, or maybe even a little more than that, but if you’re expecting yourself to start off with a bang - you’re wrong. Yes, there are blogs that buck the trend, but let this serve as a fair bit of warning to all newbie bloggers that hope they’ll start great and get disheartened when they don’t.

A bit harsh? Perhaps. Out of all the people that ask me about starting a blog of their own, I’d say 7/10 stop updating their blog after a month and 9/10 stop by the time the second month is up. Unless you have a long term goal, you will not succeed as a blogger. This term relates to nearly any project you start - I’m perhaps even more guilty then most. You see, I’ve always looked for short term profits - the more, the merrier I say - whilst I’ve certainly made some okay money in the short term, you always think (usually after you’ve just sold a website :razz: ) that had you held on to it, you’d be making double, or even treble that in a few months. And after so much profit, the end lump sum you receive when you sell (if you even decide to sell! :) ) will only be bigger and thus sweeter.

I will be doing this myself, but I will make it out as a call to action for all of you that read this blog - stop, and wait. Three simple words, but ones that will change your life if you follow through with them.

From this month onwards, I am going to take in projects that will only focus on the long run. Yes, don’t worry - I’ll still partake in activities that create short term profits - like domain flipping, eBook selling and copywriting for others - I will however also be focusing on a few things that will not bear fruit in the beginning, but will eventually start to (hopefully) produce sufficient income to live off.

How will I be doing this? Well, my plan is to create a chain of niche blog. Nothing major - maybe ten or twenty pages, a few articles and of course Adsense code. What I will be doing is creating or buying blog that focus on specific niches, and start building up my empire… four or five blogs a month becomes sixty websites a year. If I can get each blog up to $1 a day - a miserly amount, but due to that it is certainly possible - I will eventually be looking at websites that bring in $60 a day. $60 a day is decent money, and of course once they start earning $1/day I will work on doubling that - how does $120/day sound for you?

Now, unlike my other plans, I do not expect to start earning from this for a good 5-6 months - developing the websites will take time, and either paying someone to produce content or writing it myself will too. After that, the necessary link building and search engine optimization will also need to be done, and hopefully by the end of five or six months, I will have a chain of websites making $1 a day each.

Sometimes it’s hard to find a good topic for a new blog post and you need a little help. One way to do that is to take a look at Google Hot Trends and see what the hot topics of the day are. You can usually find at least one trend to fit with most niches so there’s a good chance you will be able to find something that will work for your blog.

This can also be a great way to get a nice boost in traffic. If you blog about a hot topic and your blog has enough authority to get posts indexed quickly and rank well then you stand a good chance of getting thousands of new visitors who are searching for that topic.

Going for the hottest topics on the list probably won’t do much for you because they will have already been picked up by the huge authority sites that you don’t have a chance at competing against. However, if you pick a topic somewhere in the middle to end of the hot trends you might just reap the rewards.

As I said above, there’s usually enough of a range of topics that you should be able to find a trend that is at least somewhat relevant to your blogs niche. You should choose a term that is as closely related to your niche as possible. You could also just start a general information blog and make all of your posts based on any hot trends that interest you on a daily basis.

Use Google Trends to your advantage to help you find topics to blog about and possibly bring in huge surges of traffic to your blog.

HubPages for Backlinks

Squidoo is probably better known than Hubpages - but for my money - Hubpages is the better bet for not only developing back links but also getting qualified traffic, and the potential to develop your hubpage home page with a good PR, a number of the better hubs have PR4 on their home page now. Oh and you can add as many links as you like on your home page!

What I like about hubpags includes:

* easy to add videos and pictures to break up the text: and get a bit of traffic from image searches;
* simple to use, no HTML is allowed and the capsules are more limited than squidoo’s but this makes it quick and easy to create an hub;
* use news feeds and/or eBay capsules for automatic updates for your hubs;
* limit to only 2 “self-serving” links per a hub keeps the spam level relatively low.

There are a couple of quirks with Hub Page that those who want to use hubpages for internet marketing purposes should know.

Hubpages Forum’s Ambiance

A number of the active community on the forums are primarily writers rather than online business people. There is a strong feeling that writing is important. Commercial hubs are tolerated - but anyone naively coming to the forums and asking what the community thinks of their very first hub: “How to Make Money Fast Online” will get short shrift - and probably get their hub flagged as inappropriate. Yes that’s right a lot of hubs which are flagged are done by community, so be respectful!

Hubscore Matters

Every hubber has an overall hubscore, and every hub as an individual hubscore. The two are somewhat related and both reflect traffic, particularly from outside hubpages, length of hub, and, in the case of the hubber’s hubscore, in activity such as rating other hubs, commenting and forum posting. And unless your hubscore is 75 your hub’s links will be tagged as “no follow” - a hub every month or so should see you easily maintain that score. This is the single most important feature of hubpages, in my opinion, because it keeps the spammers out.

Hubpages has never suffered from the fall from favour that squidoo has had. Most hubs are indexed within a few hours.

Hubpages appears to have a strong internal linking strategy - with each home page have links to latest, hot and best hubs. Certain tags are routinely featured on the front page: make sure you include any that are relevant in your hubs: entertainment, how to, money, business, family are commonly featured. Tags are keywords and you should add a good number to your hub to improve your internal backlinks

In the past few years, the make money online niche has become almost a jungle situation where it’s “survival of the fittest” and if you haven’t been an internet marketer for quite a while then tapping into the make money online niche is going to be a long uphill battle. I’m not saying it’s impossible to compete in the MMO niche because it’s not. However, it won’t be easy. But there is a fairly new trend that is quickly gaining popularity and you could jump on board and cash in on it…

The title of this post probably tipped you off to what I am about to say, but there is a huge market right now for buying and selling blogs, and if you’re even a little bit knowledgeable about blogging, then this is a great opportunity for you to start making money online.

Flipping blogs you won’t have to learn a lot of the usual internet marketing stuff, like:

1. Adsense
2. List building
3. Affiliate marketing
4. Niche marketing
5. SEO

And the list goes on and on….

Get a feel for what you should list it for by looking at similar blogs being sold and what kind of stats (traffic, revenue, RSS subscribers, etc…) they have. Even fairly new blogs with some traffic and readership have sold anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Make sure your auction listing details everything about the site, and emphasizes the strong points to make it attractive for potential buyers.

You can do this over and over again for as many blogs as you have time to keep up with. Some of the blogs you flip will sell for a huge profit and some won’t make you much money. You will probably even have several that don’t sell at all. That’s not a big deal. Just move on to another one.

One more hint to remember is that when you build a blog that gets a lot of bids or sells for a lot of money then it’s probably a good idea to build more of them in that niche. Using Videos to Build Traffic

You’re going to be a famous movie star! If you want to succeed on the Internet and build traffic to your site, you can do so by producing your own videos. They don’t have to be music videos or great works of fiction; they can be about anything and everything. Creating videos is very easy, and it is a great way to build web traffic!
