Mystery Of The The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are a beautiful spectacle that takes place in the northern part of Alaska. The natural light show, that is considered one of the natural Seven Wonders of the World, is so brilliant that it can be seen from many different parts of the world. Although it may seem as though these lights are magical, there are actually scientific reasons for why this beauty transforms the night sky into something truly special.

These lights, also called Aurora Borealis, are caused by the locations of the sun that are hotter than other parts of the sun. These ‘hot spots’ as they are known, produce solar wind and that wind travels through the Earth’s atmosphere. The molecules in the wind gain speed and get hotter and they start to glow. Depending on how hot the hot spots are, they produce more wind and the lights become more active.

The Northern Lights are comprised of many different colors including green, red, blue, and yellow. The different colors are created when different types of gases hit different heights in the atmosphere. Along with the many different colors, they can also have many different brightness levels. On Earth, brightness is measured on a scale where the Milky Way is the brightest and the full moon is the dimmest. The Northern Lights range all over this scale.

There are also different types of light within the Northern Lights. The first is called Quity Arces. This type of light gives the appearance of curtains or bands of light. The light can also appear as shafts or bundles of light and that type is called Raide Arces. The third type is appropriately called Diffuse Patches due to their thin and scattered appearance. The lights also range greatly in thickness, with some of them being over 100 meters thick. Some are also hundreds of kilometers tall and over one thousand kilometers in length.

Although the scientific reason is known today as the cause for the lights, there used to be many myths about them as they continued to be one of the last mysteries of the natural world. It was once believed in Norway that dead warriors were fighting and this caused the lights in the sky. The Vikings believed them to be messengers from the female god Odin and that she would mark those that were to be killed in battle. Those in Lapps and Finland believed that the lights were messengers sent by God.

Of course the Northern Lights can still be seen today. Because they are only visible in some parts of the world, Alaska gets many visitors every year, each one hoping to catch a glimpse of the mystical lights.

The older lighthouse is said to be haunted by a strange mystery and a disappearance.

The story says that someone disappeared after the old lighthouse was abandoned. The tale got its start with an old magazine story called the Haunted Light, a late nineteenth century story about a young girl who is drawn to the empty lighthouse one day while picnicing with friends. She disappeared that day.

Some say her spirit still lingers, yet was it a story of fiction or fact? The legend of Muriel is a well-known tale in these parts, with locals lending their stories of sightings to the energy of the story.

To the north of the old lighthouse is the replacement. Yaquina Head Beacon is still said to be haunted. In the thirties, one of the lighthouse keepers said he heard the ghost on the stairs almost every night.

No keepers now, but the staff and visitors and volunteers have heard voices and footsteps in the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Most believe that the spirit is one of the old lighthouse keepers.

The Haunted Alamo

San Antonio, Texas

This very famous, historical landmark which remains a prideful part of Texas history is said to be truly haunted. Not a surprise, due to what has conspiring here in 1836. The Alamo was originally a small chapel built by Franciscan monks here in 1718. Later it was expanded as a mission and a fortress, used by Texas as a stronghold against the Mexicans over land rights.

In March, 1836, the president of Mexico General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana and 4000 troops laid siege to the Alamo. The 11-day battle resulted in the deaths of most of the 188 defenders of the Alamo. The Losses for the Mexicans were over 1600. General Lopez de Santa Ana ordered the bodies of the slain Texans dumped in a large grave and the Alamo torn to the ground. But when the men started tearing down the walls, ghostly hands protruded to stop them and they fled in fear. The Alamo has not forgotten the cries of those that perished on that day.
Today the Alamo still stands in the heart of San Antonio. Tourists staying in a nearby hotel have reported seeing grotesque apparitions coming from the wall of the old Alamo. There are also other reports of a ghost on top of the Alamo, walking back and forth trying to find an escape. Other reports of screaming and yelling coming from the Alamo after hours are also heard. I feel that most of the hauntings are actually residual hauntings, meaning that they are actually playbacks of past events somehow trapped within time.

Historical Murder Mysteries : Sarah Ware

In the fall of 1898, Sarah Ware vanished from the quiet evening streets of Bucksport.

Searchers found her body two weeks later, beheaded and badly decomposed, a raincoat tucked like a pillow under her severed head.

Rumors about her death swirled as town gossips claimed the 52-year-old divorcee had been a drinker, a gambler and worse. Although a local store owner was eventually tried for her murder, neither he nor anyone else was convicted.

A century later: enter Emeric Spooner. A Bucksport librarian and amateur investigator with a penchant for the paranormal and the historical, he was piqued by the gruesome murder, by the fact that no one was ever punished for the horrific crime, by the fact that Ware was all but forgotten in the small town, known only through a bad ghost story and a faded headstone in a pauper's grave.

He's worked for two years to put a face - literally - on her murder.

"She was just a house cleaner heading home," he said. "She was an innocent."

Spooner started a Web site dedicated to Maine's greatest unsolved mysteries a few years ago. He looked into local ghost stories, paranormal events and area murders, posting the information and evidence he'd gathered for anyone to see. Two years ago, he turned to the 1898 Ware case.

Scouring old documents, court records, news articles and the coroner's inquest, Spooner painstakingly pieced together the life and death of Sarah Ware, spending up to two hours a night on the project. He found she was a mother of four, a divorcee who "caught the eye of the town gossips." She worked as a cleaning woman and lent money to townspeople, including a local store owner she worked for, William Treworgy.

On the evening of Sept. 17, Ware left a friend's house and began walking home. She stopped briefly at a town store. She was never seen alive again.

Two weeks passed before anyone officially reported her missing. Search parties found her badly decomposed body by smell, following the rancid odor to an alder swamp just off Miles Lane, not far from her home. Her skull was broken in several places and had a hammer-sized hole in the temple. She was beheaded.

A Lewiston detective was called to be lead investigator in the case, and a Bangor detective joined him. They soon found a bloody hammer (engraved with the initials W.T.T.) and a bloody tarp in Treworgy's wagon. A man told them Treworgy had paid him to move a body to the swamp.

"They had intent, they had motive and they had Treworgy," Spooner said. "He's the one they finally took to trial."

But the trial took place four years after the murder, and by that time the Bangor detective had lost both the bloody hammer and the tarp, Spooner said. And the man who claimed Treworgy paid him to move a body? He recanted, saying he was forced by a selectman and members of the citizens' committee to lie.

Treworgy was acquitted.

More than 100 years later, Spooner continues the investigation. He has his own theories.

"There's just too many things involved with Treworgy. If he didn't do it he helped move the body," he said.

Although he hasn't come up with a concrete answer yet, he recently found something almost as good - the only known photograph of Sarah Ware.

He discovered the 1892 black-and-white photo in an old library scrapbook. He compared it to the only other image of Ware he had, a tintype drawing featured in an old newspaper. For the first time, he could put a real face on the victim.

"I'm just trying to get the facts out there," he said. "She was an innocent."

Haunted Seguin Island Light

Way up in the northeastern corner of the U.S, perched high on its own little barren island made of rock, sits Sequin Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse , located at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Georgetown, Maine, is the second lighthouse that was ever built in Maine and is one of the oldest in the U.S. The little island of rock, located in an area that is frequently shrouded in fog -- an average of 2,734 hours of fog every year -- and hammered with cold, high winds, seemed almost designed by nature to harbor a lighthouse.

Merchants submitted the petition for the lighthouse in 1786, but the government didn't order the lighthouse built until 1795. Once President George Washington gave the order, the lighthouse construction began and the project was completed in 1797 at a cost of $6,300.

Sequin Island Lighthouse holds the title as the highest elevated lighthouse in Maine, standing just over 180 feet above sea level. The fixed, non-flashing light is visible to ships as far out as 40 miles. Due to the high occurance of fog in this area, the light house is equipped with one of the most powerful fog horns ever made. The original structure was replaced in 1820, and again in 1857 when the present structure was erected. The light was continued to be manually monitored until it was fully automated in 1985.

The history of Seguin Island Light Station is filled with strange and tragic stories.

One is that of the first lightkeeper who died penniless and boatless on the island. Some say his ghost has haunted the keepers who came after him. There have been sightings of a ghost who has been named the "Old Captain". He is usally seen climbing the staircase of the tower as if heading upstairs to tend to the light.

One night the old furnishings were being removed from the premesis. Apparently the man in charge of the crew moving the furniture was awakened in the middle of the night by the "Old Captain" who asked him not to take the furniture and to leave his home alone. The man didn't grant the request and the next day after the furniture had been loaded onto a boat and was being lowered into the water, the cable mysteriously snapped. The boat and everything in it fell onto the rocks below and were smashed into pieces. It appears the "Old Captain" got his way afterall.

Another frequent sighting is that of a young girl running up and down the stairs and waving to those who see her. She has also been heard laughing and bouncing a ball in a room upstairs. History shows that a young girl died on the island and was buried near the lighthouse.

Perhaps the most tragic incident that occured on the island is that of a former caretaker in the mid 1800's who was driven insane and murdered his wife, then took his own life. Legend states the caretaker brought his wife to live with him at the lighthouse shortly after they were married. As time went by, she became depressed and sullen and he bought her a piano to help cheer her up.

Unfortunately, she didn't memorize music and had to play from sheet music. Since she had only had one piece of sheet music on the island, she played the same song over and over until her husband finally took an axe to the piano and to her, and then killed himself.

Passing ships have reported that the sound of faint piano music coming from the island can be heard floating out over the waves on still, calm evenings.

Additional accounts of the paranormal include doors opening and closing by themselves, mysterous cold spots, coats being thrown onto the floor, tools disappearing and reappearing at random, and coughing from an unseen source.

The Sequin Island Lighthouse is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and is accessible by boat from Bath, Popham Beach, or Boothbay Harbor.

Gregg's Soap Box ... My Gripe Of The Week ... Public Bathrooms

This is a new weekly posting every Monday for no better reason than sometimes I like to vent,lol. My dear friend Autumnforest told me I needed to get more personal on my blogs. I don't think she meant to go this far but .... what the hell.

This weeks gripe. Public bathrooms.

Have you ever been forced to use a public bathroom? I hate them. I don't suggest you ever use one, who knows what you might pick up. For guys it might be a little easier than for women, I feel sorry for my female friends in this situation. So my gripe ... Why doesn't anyone ever clean these things?

The other day, I was forced to go into a department store restroom and I was terrified by the filth. Most of the stalls were filthy and well, to be honest, un-flushed. (And no I don't mean just urination) I don't understand people, would they do this at home? I hope not, if so I don't want to visit their house. But what was worse, I passed an employee as I went in and he dashed out like the place on fire. I guess for fear that he would have to clean the place. Sad thing is, he probably didn't even report the filth.

My friends I hope I didn't offend anyone but this was just something that I had to vent.

Pogo The Clown

If you have never heard of Pogo the clown, maybe you have heard of John Gacy. They are one in the same. John Gacy or as he was better known as John “Killer Clown” performed at children’s parties all over the Chicago area until one day he was arrested for murder. His grisly murders were told worldwide and in the end, he was executed in 1994 at the age of 52 for the torture and murders of 33 boys and men.

John Gacy was also an artist so to speak. He would paint pictures of himself as Pogo the Clown. Many people have been searching for and desiring to own one of these famous paintings. However, those that have owned these paintings have all had harm come to them. Nikki Stone for one had his dog die and his mother was diagnosed with cancer after he purchased one of these paintings. A friend of Stone’s offered to store the painting at his house died in a car crash and another friend that did store the painting in his home committed suicide.

Johnny Depp had one in his possession until he became so pathological afraid of clowns that he got rid of the painting.

Whitechapel, London...Home of a Serial Killer

In the late 19th century, a man of an unknown origin became a serial killer that murdered five prostitutes in Whitechapel, an impoverished London Borough of Tower Hamlets east of the city.

There are many speculations about the real identity of this sexual psychopath that presumably was a doctor who killed them as revenge after his son died of an STD, although recently found evidence found him to be a sailor from Argentina who stayed briefly in the city.

Regardless of the real identity of Jack the Ripper or the reason that lead him to murder, his first victim, Mary Ann Nichols, is reported as the haunt commonly seen today late at night in Whitechapel's streets.

Nichols was a 43-years old woman known as "Polly" who was savagely attacked, stabbed at the stomach and across her throat. Polly has been seen at the spot where her body was found, but also as a prostitute easily recognized by her demodé clothing.

It is believed that this ghost attracted other ghosts and hauntings to this place, including other victims of the serial assassin. The Tube (London's underground rail) is another spot where Whitechapel ghosts have been reported.
Closer to the crime scene, part of the old St Mary's station (Whitechapel Road) can be seen between Whitechapel to Aldgate East stations. Closed in 1938, this station is the spot of a ghostly scene in which people aboard the passing trains have seen a man they identify as Jack the Ripper chasing a scared woman that suddenly disappears.

People who are really serious about haunting or want to dig deeper into the unexplained can easily join the Jack the Ripper's walk starting at the Ten Bells Pub, a bar situated in Shoredich's Commercial Street, east London. People who go on the trail of Jack the Ripper can get a reward offered for physical evidence of these ghostly apparitions, similar to the prize offered to people who can get a picture of Nessie at the Loch Ness Lake.

Albert DeSalvo

Albert DeSalvo was a serial killer who operated in Boston, between the years 1962-1964 and in this short span, he confessed to the murder of 13 women. The victims were first sexually assaulted and then strangled by an article of clothing. DeSalvo said that he was the ‘Boston Strangler’ although many people still shed doubts upon these confessions and the reality of the whole ordeal was never cleared. In 1967 he was sentenced to lifetime in prison. He later escaped from a hospital where he was contained, and a full-scale manhunt issued. After that he was relocated to another high-security prison and was found murdered a few years later.

Charles Manson

An American criminal who gave rise to a group known as the Manson Family, Charles and the Family were responsible for dozens of murders. The murders were highly publicized. Charles was an artist who performed and wrote songs in his spare time, usually rock influenced, leading many to associate him with insanity and devilry. His music also bore tendencies towards promoting a war between the black and white communities. He is currently imprisoned in Corcoran State Prison and is 74-years-old.

Richard Ramirez

Ricardo or Richard Ramirez is an American serial killer of Hispanic origin who operated in California. He is held responsible for nearly 14 murders and is currently imprisoned in San Quentin State Prison. Dubbed as the ‘Night Stalker’ by the media, Richard terrorized the people of California. The victims themselves were mostly older women, whom he sexually harassed and then shot multiple times. His trial is said to have been one of the longest and one of the most difficult criminal trials in American history, involving over a hundred witnesses and over a thousand jurors. He was given a death sentence and is awaiting his execution via the gas chamber.

I cannot imagine what drove these people to the acts they committed. Stay well my friends and take care. You never know who you might meet one day or what they are capable of.

Thug Behram

Behram was an Indian leader of the Thugge Cult in India. In a 50-year criminal career (1790-1840) Behram is suspected to have killed over 931 victims. The method of killing was usually by hand or by strangulation with a ceremonial cloth used by the cult. Behram is regarded as the most prolific serial killer in the history of the world. Behram was hanged and executed in 1840.

Ted Bundy

Theodore Robert Bundy committed a rampage of serial killings in the United States between the years 1974-1978. He is held responsible for 26-35 murders, most of them young women. He himself confessed to 30 murders, but they remain unconfirmed. The method of killing was usually bludgeoning and strangling, and it is reported that he would engage in sexual acts with the victims as well. He was arrested twice and both times, escaped from prison. In 1978 he was finally apprehended and convicted. Later, he was executed by the electric chair in January 1989.

Aileen Wuornos

An American serial killer and one of the most famous and widely-reported female killers of all time, Aileen was 15 when her grandfather passed away and she began to earn her living as a prostitute. She was working in Florida, where she killed seven men in between the years 1989-1990, claiming they had raped her. Wuornos was convicted for six of the murders and was finally executed on October 9, 2005 via a lethal injection. A movie has been filmed about her life, Monster which won Charlize Theron an Oscar for her role as Aileen Wuornos in 2003.

Gilles de Rais

Gilles was a Marshal of France and a one-time companion of Joan of Arc. He is attributed as the most prolific killer of the middle ages. After a career in the military, Gilles exhausted his inherited wealth and tried to reform his affluence by sacrificing young boys to a demon called the ‘Barron’. Along with an inner circle of allies, Gilles would kidnap boys and bring them to his castle where they would be pampered and feasted and finally, raped and sacrificed ceremoniously. He would often have their limbs opened up and delight at the sight of their internal organs. He victimized and killed more than 100 such children. He is portrayed in various examples of famous pop culture.

John Wayne Gacy

Arrested in 1978 after the disappearance of a fifteen-year-old boy Robert Piest, Gacy was convicted and then confessed to more than 33 murders, mostly young boys and men. He would sodomize the victims and then dispose of their bodies in a crawlspace under the floor of his house. On March 13, Gacy was found guilty for the murders and received a death sentence. His last words reportedly were ‘kiss my ass’ before he was executed via a lethal injection.

The killer sent many letters to the press, including cryptograms hinting to possible evidence. The name, Zodiac Killer was also coined within these letters. Inside the letters, he takes responsibility for over 33 murders although only five have been confirmed by police officials. The Zodiac Killer left behind a sinful and chilling legacy, one that has inspired books, novels, films, documentaries and more.

A Review Of My Book Paranormal World (Hardback / eBook) By Autumnforest On The Blog Ghost Hunting Theories

This is a serious nonfiction book about all things paranormal. I'm keeping it as a reference guide but it's an enthralling read. If you're like me and ghosts are your thing but that doesn't preclude you from seeking info about all things paranormal including Bermuda Triangle, Bigfoot, Werewolves, UFOs and more, then this is your book.

I was pleased too that added in the end of the ghost stories were tips on how to hunt. What a great idea! It comes in hardback and Nook/Kindle, but honestly I love having the hardback because it's awesome on my shelf and I can grab it up and read about any subject any time I want to. It's broken up into fun easy to read portions so you can just read about one haunt or one incident and then go back later when you have time. Yes, we are all highly distracted these days.

This book is a keeper and reader and re-reader. Let me tell you, I'm very picky what gets to stay on my bookshelf. It has to be something I will refer to often. The last time I added a book to stay on the shelves was a year ago, so I am not a hoarder.

One thing we all know about me is that I like to ride around in the paranormal world, now I can also read about it.

HOUSTON, TX – National defense experts are confronting the possibility that aliens have invaded Earth’s oceans – and are spying on humans from under the sea!

Alarmed by a dramatic increase in sightings of Unidentified Submarine Objects (USOs) over the past three months, the U.S. military has been placed on worldwide alert and scientists are organizing a vast underwater reconnaissance of alien activities. Reports so far indicate that there are at least 1,000 USOs in oceans around the globe and the number appears to be increasing daily.

“The alien craft have been sighted by seamen and divers worldwide and the descriptions are amazingly similar,” said Dr. Michael Simmons, a marine biologist with high-level contacts in the Pentagon.

“The undersea vessels are about 300 feet long with two saucer-shaped appendages and they are extremely fast. They are capable of reaching great depths – but can also pass from the water straight up into the atmosphere and right in out to stellar space.

“Over the past three decades, we’ve had such sightings from time to time. But the vast increase in reports over the last few months indicates we may now be dealing with a major alien invasion.”

Experts believe the alien forces are using the planet’s oceans as hiding places, lurking deep under the water where mankind cannot go. Their craft appear to be capable of withstanding the incredible pressures exerted by the weight of the water miles under the sea – pressures which limit man’s ability to descend to great depths.

Judging by reports of sightings worldwide, the alien craft regularly blast off from secret undersea bases and head for outer space.

Observers fear the regular launches indicate that aliens are resupplying their bases and relaying scientific information, samples of Earth life-forms and top secret military data to their home planet.

“While we sit on the surface of our planet doing nothing, these creatures are deep under our oceans secretly preparing to conduct a deadly assault,” worries Dr. Mitchell, who has revealed the alien presence in the hope that public reaction will force world governments to face the extraterrestrial menace.

“The aliens are operating more and more openly – almost as if they’re daring mankind to try to stop them.”
