Prague Castle

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle on the world. Built in the 9th century it served as the seat of Bohemian Kings, Holy Roman Emperors, presidents of Czechoslovakia and now it serves as the seat of president of the Czech Republic.

The castle complex si more then 500 meters long and in average it is about 130 meters wide. This city inside a city consists of 4 religious buildings (the most significant is the St. Vitus Cathedral), 4 palaces and several halls, gardens and other buildings.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place every hour by the castle gates. At noon the flag ceremony is held in the First courtyard.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat was built it the 12th century by the king of Khmer Empire and today it is the largest religious complex in the world (it occupies area of about 500 acres). This Hindu complex dedicated to Vishnu is surrounded by almost 200 meters wide moat.

Inside the complex visitors can see many galleries with unique bas-reliefs (probably the most famous is Churning of the Ocean of Milk from the Indian epic Mahābhārata) and inscriptions written in Khmer and Sanskrit.

Angkor Wat is also a national symbol of Cambodia and thus is displayed on the Cambodian flag. This temple complex is so famous that more than half of visitors of Cambodia visit also Angkor Wat.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale is probably the most famous natural site as well as mineral spa in Turkey. Its name means "Cotton castle" in Turkish and it reffers to the color and shape of the cascades of small pools made of travertine. These pools were formed during centuries by sedimentation of calcium disolved in the hot spring water.

The site was already used as a spa by Romans who built a close-by city Heliopolis, which is an interesting tourist attraction as well.

Bathing in the original (natural) Pamukkale pools is currenty prohibited. Visitors can instead use artificially built pools that are accessible after they remove their shoes, but then its a marvelous (but usually crowdy) experience.

Out from the ground came a bubbling crude?! Not quite!

A man began by digging a well on his ranch in Nevada.

Deep below the surface for water, he found what he was looking for,

1964 a team tried to create a successful well there only to fail themselves!

They did not cap their drilling properly causing

Fly Geyser, also known as Fly Ranch Geyser or the Green Geyser^[

is a man-made small geothermal geyser located in Washoe County, Nevada

approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Gerlach.

Fly Geyser is located near the edge of Fly Reservoir

and is only about 5 feet (1.5 m) high, but 12 feet (3.7 m) wide,

counting the mound on which it sits.

Fly Geyser is located on the private Fly Ranch in Hualapai Flat, about 0.3 miles (0.48 km) from State Route 34. The ranch is currently owned by Todd Jaksick. There is a high fence and a locked gate
topped with spikes to exclude trespassers. The only access is a dirt road, but it is large enough to
be seen from the road.

Found in that tiny fraction of the world's oceans are amazing creatures that survive in seemingly uninhabitable environments, submerged man-made structures, some of which seem to oppose everything we know about our ancient past. From surviving ancient manuscripts it is clear that there has always been a belief that new lands could rise up from the ocean, while old ones could sink into the sea, destroying former civilizations in the process. The most famous of all the lost lands is that of Atlantis, described in great detail by Plato almost 2,500 years ago. During the past century as we developed the technology to fly and with the advent of sonar and better diving equipment, numerous underwater anomalies have been discovered.......

Yonaguni Monument

Off the coast of the Yonaguni island, the most southern of the Ryuku Islands in Japan is located one of the world’s most mysterious underwater structures - the Yonaguni Monument. It was discovered by a local diver in the 1980s who was stunned by massive rectangular formations with perfect 90 degree angles, straight walls, steps, columns and what appears to be a human face carved in the rock. Soon, a team of scientists led by Masaaki Kimura visited the underwater structure and concluded that it had to be man-made. The only logical explanation is that the structure was built when the site was above sea level which was around 10,000 years BC or according to the latest findings, about 3,000 to 2,000 years ago when it was sunk by an earthquake. Not all, however, are convinced that the Yonaguni Monument was made by human hands.

Underwater City in the Gulf of Cambay (Gulf of Khambhat Cultural Complex)

The Underwater City in the Gulf of Cambay, also known as the Gulf of Khambhat Cultural Complex is a huge submerged city off the western coast of India, 120 feet (36 meters) below the sea level. It was discovered accidentally in 2001 by Indian oceanographers who found enormous geometrical structures with a side-scan sonar. The site was soon investigated and identified as undoubtedly man-made. Marine archaeologists found construction material, sections of walls, sculpture, pottery and human remains. These were carbon dated and found to be about 9,500 years old. This corresponds with the end of the Ice Age some 9,000 to 10,000 years ago when the melting of the ice caps elevated the sea levels and probably also submerged the ancient city in the Gulf of Cambay. If the Underwater City in the Gulf of Cambay is really as old as it appears to be, it predates the earliest known cities in Mesopotamia for as much as 5,000 years.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and officially the world’s oldest submerged town is located just off coast of southern Peloponnese region of Laconia, Greece, 10 to 13 feet (3 to 4 meters) below the sea level. It covers an area of 322,917 square feet (30,000 square meters) where have been found buildings, streets, courtyards, tombs and graves. Pavlopetri (named after the nearby islet of same name) was built about 5,000 years ago which means that it predates the golden era of ancient Greece for over two millennia. The city is believed to be submerged about 1,000 BC by an earthquake and according to some scholars, possibly inspired the Plato’s story about Atlantis.

Google Earth Circular Anomalies

The circular anomalies that can be seen off the coast of Florida, North Carolina, and Belize have been documented by enthusiasts and archaeologists alike. Even though they are found on a global scale, their true objective hasn’t been discovered so far – many believe they were used as an ancient type of burial mound. They are also very similar to stone structures that have been found in Saudi Arabia that can be seen on this website. It is believed that the underwater structures have been better preserved than those on dry land and may date back to ±8,000 BC. as those in Saudi Arabia have been dated to around 7,000 BC.

Structure in Lake Macdonald, Ontario

Divers discovered proof of Eastern Canada’s ancient past while taking part in a unique submarine project in 2005. They found the very curious stone structure at a depth of 40 feet (12 m) below the surface. It consists of a massive 1,000 lb (453 kg) elongated rock with an almost completely level surface resting on 7 baseball-sized stones, which in turn sits on a huge several thousand pound slab on top of a ledge. It was thought to be a natural formation until geologists and archaeologists looked at the images. The discovery of the man-made “rock cairn”, was deemed to be proven when an underwater archaeologist concluded the existence of three shims was enough proof that the structure was man-made.

Lake Michigan’s Stonehenge

Even though Stonehenge in the UK is one of the most famous historical stone monuments in the world, it is not unique. Similar stone arrangements have been found worldwide. In 2007 while surveying the bottom of Lake Michigan with sonar, a team of underwater archaeologists discovered a series of stones aligned in a circle 40 feet (12 m) below the surface. One of the stones also seemed to feature a carving of a mastodon, an animal that has been extinct for 10, 000 years. If the site is validated, it would not be completely out of place, as other stone circles and petroglyph sites can be found in the vicinity.

Cuba’s Underwater City

A series of submerged structures discovered off the Cuban coast in 2001 captured the imaginations of archaeologists, researchers and Atlantis-hunters worldwide. Found by a company doing surveying work, the sonar images have shown symmetrical and geometric structures that covers an area of 200 ha (almost 2 square km) at depths between 2,000 and 2,460 feet (± 700 m). Skeptics believe the site is too deep to be manmade as it is estimated that it would have taken the structures 50,000 years to sink to their current depth. If conclusive proof can be found that these structures were indeed manmade, it would back up the Maya and local Yucatecos stories of an ancient island inhabited by their ancestors that vanished beneath the sea.

Underwater ‘Crop Circles’ Discovered Off the Coast of Japan

Rippling geometric sand patterns nearly six feet in diameter almost 80 feet below sea level.

Using underwater cameras the team discovered the artist is a small puffer fish only a few inches in length that swims tirelessly through the day and night to create these vast organic sculptures using the gesture of a single fin. Through careful observation the team found the circles serve a variety of crucial ecological functions, the most important of which is to attract mates. Apparently the female fish are attracted to the hills and valleys within the sand and traverse them carefully to discover the male fish where the pair eventually lay eggs at the circle’s center, the grooves later acting as a natural buffer to ocean currents that protect the delicate offspring. Scientists also learned that the more ridges contained within the sculpture resulted in a much greater likelihood of the fish pairing.

The Tunnel of Love in Klevan, Ukraine

Klevan is a village about 25 km NW of the city of Rivne.
It was part of Poland between WWI and WWII.
This is an industrial track (apparently for a steel mill)

The Badlands Guardian. Coordinates: 50° 0’36.30″N, 110° 6’46.82″W.
The Badlands Guardian was one of those mysterious places
that was first discovered by Lynn Hickox utilizing the Google Earth program.
Even though this area is a natural formation, it is amazingly ironic
to see these arid badlands formations resemble the fully
detailed shape of the very same indigenous people that lived in these lands.

Located on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu
is considered one of the most mystical sites on our planet.

The Cerne Abbas Giant, also known as the “Rude Man” or the “Rude Giant”
is a figure that stands 180 ft long and 167 ft wide.
It is carved in the hillside of Cerne Abbas, just north of Dorchester, England.
It’s origin and date is unknown...

Strange Carved Lines in China. Coordinates: 40°27’28.56″N, 93°23’34.42″E.
There isn’t much information available on these strange, yet beautiful mosaic
lines carved in the desert of the Gansu Sheng province in China.
Some records indicate they were created in 2004, but nothing that seems official.

Atacama Giant. Coordinates: 19°56’56.88″S, 69°38’1.87″W.
Our last example of mysterious places found on Google Earth is also located
in the Atacama desert of Chile. The Atacama Giant is the
largest prehistoric anthropomorphic figure.

The Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the oldest and sole-surviving member
of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and has inspired
more speculation than any other building on Earth.

To the south-east of the Great Pyramid lies the Sphinx.

Supposedly equipped only with the most basic tools,
how were ancient Egyptians able to achieve such an
extraordinary degree of accuracy in its construction?

How were stones, some weighing as much as 40 tons, hauled into position so precisely?

It is 481 feet tall, 756 feet long at its base,
and consists of 2.3 million blocks of stone weighing two and a half tons each.

How did the ancient Egyptians, with their primitive technology, build it?

Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb
for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek)
over a 10 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BCE.
Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid
was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years.

It's base covers over 13 acres and its volume is around 90,000,000 cubic feet.
You could build 30 Empire State buildings with its masonry.
It is 454 feet high which is equivalent to a modern 48-story building.
There are currently 203 courses or steps to its summit.
Each of the four triangular sides slope upward from the base
at an angle of 51 degrees 51 minutes and each side has an area of 5 1/2 acres.
The joints between adjacent blocks fit together with optical precision
and less than a fiftieth of an inch separates the blocks.
The cement that was used is extremely fine and strong and defies chemical analysis.
Today, with all our modern science and engineering,
we would not be able to build a Great Pyramid of Giza.
The Great Pyramid is thought to have been
erected around 2600 BC during the reign of Khufu (Cheops).

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only pyramid in Egypt
known to contain both ascending and descending passages.

It is thought that, at construction, the Great Pyramid was originally
280 Egyptian cubits tall, 146.5 metres (480.6 ft)
but with erosion and absence of its pyramidion,
its present height is 138.8 metres (455.4 ft).
Each base side was 440 cubits, 230.4 metres (755.9 ft) long.
The mass of the pyramid is estimated at 5.9 million tonnes.
The volume, including an internal hillock, is roughly 2,500,000 cubic metres.

Based on these estimates, building this in 20 years
would involve installing approximately 800 tonnes of stone every day.

Similarly, since it consists of an estimated 2.3 million blocks,
completing the building in 20 years would involve moving
an average of more than 12 of the blocks into place each hour, day and night.

The first precision measurements of the pyramid
were made by Egyptologist Sir Flinders Petrie in 1880–82
Almost all reports are based on his measurements.

Many of the casing stones and inner chamber blocks of the Great Pyramid
were fit together with extremely high precision.
Based on measurements taken on the north eastern casing stones,
the mean opening of the joints is only 0.5 millimetres wide (1/50th of an inch).^[5]

The accuracy of the pyramid's workmanship
is such that the four sides of the base
have an average error of only 58 millimetres in length.
The base is horizontal and flat to within ±15 mm (0.6 in).
The sides of the square base are closely aligned
to the four cardinal compass points (within 4 minutes of arc)
based on true north, not magnetic north,
and the finished base was squared
to a mean corner error of only 12 seconds of arc.

The completed design dimensions, as suggested
by Petrie's survey and subsequent studies, are estimated to have
originally been 280 cubits high by 440 cubits long at each of the four sides of its base.
The ratio of the perimeter to height of 1760/280 cubits equates to 2π to an accuracy
of better than 0.05% (corresponding to the well-known approximation of π as 22/7).

Some Egyptologists consider this to have been the result of deliberate design proportion.
Verner wrote, "We can conclude that although the ancient Egyptians
could not precisely define the value of π, in practice they used it".

Petrie, author of Pyramids and Temples of Gizeh concluded: "but these relations of areas and of circular ratio are so systematic that we should grant that they were in the builder's design".

Others have argued that the Ancient Egyptians had no concept of pi
and would not have thought to encode it in their monuments.
They believe that the observed pyramid slope
may be based on a simple seked slope choice alone, with no regard
to the overall size and proportions of the finished building.

On the Giza Plateau, Khufu's builders oriented his pyramid almost perfectly north.
The largest pyramid ever built, it incorporates about 2.3 million stone blocks,
weighing an average of 2.5 to 15 tons each. It is estimated that the workers
would have had to set a block every two and a half minutes.

The pyramid has three burial chambers.
The first is underground, carved into bedrock.
The second, above ground chamber was called the queen's chamber by early explorers.
We now know it was never intended to house one of Khufu's wives
but perhaps a sacred statue of the king himself.
The third is the king's chamber, which held a red granite sarcophagus
placed almost exactly at the center of the pyramid.

The king's chamber is accessed via the 26-foot-high (8-meter-high)
Grand Gallery, which was sealed off from thieves by sliding granite blocking systems.

The Great Pyramid was the centerpiece of an elaborate complex,
which included several small pyramids, five boat pits, a mortuary temple,
a causeway, a valley temple, and many flat-roofed tombs
for officials and some members of the royal family.

CLASSIC FACT: Several mystery shafts extend from the king's and queen's chambers. Neither airshafts (they were sealed) nor hallways (they are too narrow), they may have been designed to allow Khufu to travel to the stars in his afterlife. A blocked shaft from the queen's chamber was penetrated in 2002. Archaeologists discovered another stone blocking their way (read more in National Geographic News).

A Facebook platform application named "Six Degrees" was developed by Karl Bunyan, which calculates the degrees of separation between different people. It had over 5.8 million users, as seen from the group's page. The average separation for all users of the application is 5.73 degrees, whereas the maximum degree of separation is 12. The application has a "Search for Connections" window to input any name of a Facebook user, to which it then shows the chain of connections. In June 2009, Bunyan shut down the application, presumably due to issues with Facebook's caching policy; specifically, the policy prohibited the storing of friend lists for more than 24 hours, which would have made the application inaccurate.^[24] A new version of the application became available at Six Degrees after Karl Bunyan gave permission to a group of developers led by Todd Chaffee to re-develop the application based on Facebook's revised policy on caching data.^[25]^[26]
The initial version of the application was built at a Facebook Developers Garage London hackathon with Mark Zuckerberg in attendance.^[27]
Yahoo! Research Small World Experiment has been conducting an experiment and everyone with a Facebook account can take part in it. According to the research page, this research has the potential of resolving the still unresolved theory of six degrees of separation.^[21]^[28]
Facebook's data team released two papers in November 2011 which document that amongst all Facebook users at the time of research (721 million users with 69 billion friendship links) there is an average distance of 4.74.^[29] Probabilistic algorithms were applied on statistical metadata to verify the accuracy of the measurements.^[30] It was also found that 99.91% of Facebook users were interconnected, forming a large connected component.....

What are Lunar Tides Tides are created because the Earth and the moon are attracted to each other, just like magnets are attracted to each other. The moon tries to pull at anything on the Earth to bring it closer. But, the Earth is able to hold onto everything except the water. Since the water is always moving, the Earth cannot hold onto it, and the moon is able to pull at it. Each day, there are two high tides and two low tides. The ocean is constantly moving from high tide to low tide, and then back to high tide. There is about 12 hours and 25 minutes between the two high tides.
A Few Facts About Lunar Tides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- •The gravitational force of the moon is one ten-millionth that of earth, but when you combine other forces such as the earth's centrifugal force created by its spin, you get tides.
•The sun's gravitational force on the earth is only 46 percent that of the moon. Making the moon the single most important factor for the creation of tides.
•The sun's gravity also produces tides. But since the forces are smaller, as compared to the moon, the effects are greatly decreased.
•Tides are not caused by the direct pull of the moon's gravity. The moon is pulling upwards on the water while the earth is pulling downward. Slight advantage to the moon and thus we have tides. •Whenever the Moon, Earth and Sun are aligned, the gravitational pull of the sun adds to that of the moon causing maximum tides.
•Spring tides happen when the sun and moon are on the same side of the earth (New Moon) or when the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the earth (Full Moon).
• When the Moon is at first quarter or last quarter phase (meaning that it is located at right angles to the Earth-Sun line), the Sun and Moon interfere with each other in producing tidal bulges and tides are generally weaker; these are called neap tides.

A space telescope aimed at the sun has spotted a gigantic hole in the solar atmosphere — a dark spot that covers nearly a quarter of our closest star, spewing solar material and gas into space.
The so-called coronal hole over the sun's north pole came into view between July 13 and 18 and was observed by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO. NASA released a video of the sun hole as seen by the SOHO spacecraft, showing the region as a vast dark spot surrounded by solar activity.
Coronal holes are darker, cooler regions of the sun's atmosphere, or corona, containing little solar material. In these gaps, magnetic field lines whip out into the solar wind rather than looping back to the sun's surface. Coronal holes can affect space weather, as they send solar particles streaming off the sun about three times faster than the slower wind unleashed elsewhere from the sun's atmosphere, according to a description from NASA.

The English name of the island commemorates its European discovery by a Dutch exploration vessel on Easter Sunday in 1722. a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world.[6] The nearest inhabited land (50 residents) is Pitcairn Island at 2,075 kilometres (1,289 mi), and the nearest continental point lies in central Chile, at 3,512 kilometres (2,182 mi). Easter Island is a special territory of Chile that was annexed in 1888. Administratively, it belongs to the Valparaíso Region and more specifically, is the only commune of the Province Isla de Pascua.[7] According to the 2012 census, it has about 5,800 residents, of which some 60% are descendants of the aboriginal Rapa Nui. Legend says that the people left for Easter Island because their own island was slowly being swallowed by the sea. Although it is not agreed when people first arrived on Easter Island (with estimates ranging from several hundred to more than one thousand years ago), consensus seems to be that the first peoples arrived from Polynesia. Rather than being inhabited by mistake or chance, evidence has suggested that Easter Island was colonized deliberately by large boats with many settlers -- a remarkable feat given the distance of Easter Island from any other land in the Pacific Ocean. The first islanders found a land of undoubted paradise -- archaeological evidence shows that the island was covered in trees of various sorts, including the largest palm tree species in the world, whose bark and wood furnished the natives with cloth, rope, and canoes. Birds were abundant as well, and provided food for them. A mild climate favored an easy life, and abundant waters yielded fish and oysters. The islanders prospered due to these advantages, and a reflection of this is the religion which sprouted in their leisure, which had at its centrepiece the giant moai, or heads, that are the island's most distinctive feature today. These moai, which the island is littered with, are supposed to have been depictions of ancestors, whose presence likely was considered a blessing or watchful safekeeping eye over each small village. The ruins of Rano Raraku crater, the stone quarry where scores if not hundreds of moai sit today, is a testament to how central these figures were to the islanders, and how their life revolved around these creations. It has been suggested that their isolation from all other peoples fuelled this outlet of trade and creativity -- lacking any other significant way to direct their skills and resources. The bird-man culture (seen in petroglyphs), is an obvious testament to the islanders' fascination with the ability to leave their island for distant lands. However, as the population grew, so did pressures on the island's environment. Deforestation of the island's trees gradually increased, and as this main resource was depleted, the islanders would find it hard to continue making rope, canoes, and all the necessities to hunt and fish, and ultimately, support the culture that produced the giant stone figureheads. Apparently, disagreements began to break out (with some violence) as confidence in the old religion was lost, and is reflected partly in the ruins of moai which were deliberately toppled by human hands. By the end of the glory of the Easter Island culture, the population had crashed in numbers, and the residents -- with little food or other ways to obtain sustenance -- resorted sometimes to cannibalism and a bare subsistence. Subsequent raids by powers such as Peru and Bolivia devastated the population even more, until only a few hundred native Rapa Nui were left by the last century.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in the English county of Wiltshire located in the United Kingdom.

Archaeologists have believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 BC, as described in the chronology. One recent theory however, has suggested that the first stones were not erected until 2400-2200 BC,^[2] whilst another suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.

There is little or no direct evidence for the construction techniques used by the Stonehenge builders. Over the years, various authors have suggested that supernatural or anachronistic methods were used, usually asserting that the stones were impossible to move otherwise. However, conventional techniques using Neolithic technology have been demonstrably effective at moving and placing stones of a similar size.^[16] Proposed functions for the site include usage as an astronomical observatory, or as a religious site.

More recently two major new theories have been proposed. Professor Mike Parker Pearson, head of the Stonehenge Riverside Project, has suggested that Stonehenge was part of a ritual landscape and was joined to Durrington Walls by their corresponding avenues and the River Avon. He suggests that the area around Durrington Walls Henge was a place of the living, whilst Stonehenge was a domain of the dead. A journey along the Avon to reach Stonehenge was part of a ritual passage from life to death, to celebrate past ancestors and the recently deceased.^[14] On the other hand, Geoffery Wainwright, president of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and Timothy Darvill of Bournemouth University have suggested that Stonehenge was a place of healing – the primeval equivalent of Lourdes.^[17] They argue that this accounts for the high number of burials in the area and for the evidence of trauma deformity in some of the graves. However they do concede that the site was probably multifunctional and used for ancestor worship as well.^[18] Isotope analysis indicates that some of the buried individuals were from other regions. A teenage boy buried approximately 1550 BC was raised near the Mediterranean Sea; a metal worker from 2300 BC dubbed the "Amesbury Archer" grew up near the alpine foothills of Germany; and the "Boscombe Bowmen" likely arrived from Wales or Brittany, France.^[19]

Whatever religious, mystical or spiritual elements were central to Stonehenge, its design includes a celestial observatory function, which might have allowed prediction of eclipse, solstice, equinox and other celestial events important to a contemporary religion ^[20]

Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings.^[5] The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate burials from as early as 3000 BC, when the initial ditch and bank were first dug. Burials continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years

Stonehenge evolved in several construction phases spanning at least 1500 years. There is evidence of large-scale construction on and around the monument that perhaps extends the landscape's time frame to 6500 years. Dating and understanding the various phases of activity is complicated by disturbance of the natural chalk by periglacial effects and animal burrowing, poor quality early excavation records, and a lack of accurate, scientifically verified dates. A prehistoric village has been discovered in southern England that was likely home to the builders of Stonehenge, archaeologists announced on January 30, 2007 (read the full story).

The village, located 1.75 miles (2.8 kilometers) from the famous stone circle, includes eight wooden houses dated back to around 2500 B.C.

The remains of a cluster of homes include the outlines of floors, beds, and cupboards. Tools, jewelry, pottery, and human and animal bones were also found.

The excavated houses formed part of a much bigger settlement dating back to the Late Stone Age, according to project leader Mike Parker Pearson of England's Sheffield University.

"We could have many hundreds of houses here," Parker Pearson added. "Our dates for the building of Stonehenge are identical to the dates for this very large settlement."

The village stood next to a newly revealed stone avenue, partly visible in the excavation ditch at top right, which once led from a large timber circle to the nearby River Avon.

The site was excavated in 2006 as part of the Stonehenge Riverside Project.

A U.S. researcher suggests that the architects of Stonehenge were inspired by magical "auditory illusions" the stones could produce, according to a Live Science report.

Steven Waller, a researcher who specializes in the sound properties of ancient sites, is challenging common Stonehenge theories that the site was intended for spiritual worship and ceremonial burials.

He suggests that the stones were arranged to create a special sound phenomena that baffled participants of ritual piper dancing, and they may have thought the effect was supernatural.

There are four major celestial conjunctions in Plato’s Great Year (25920 years) that were of interest to the ancients since they divide the Great Year into four epochs or Great Ages of 6480 years each.

In the paper ‘Crucifying the Earth on the Galactic Cross’ (Smelyakov, Wicherink 2006) these four extremely rare celestial conjunctions in a Great Year were called the Great Celestial Conjunctions (GCC). Archaeologists working near Stonehenge have uncovered what they believe is the largest Neolithic settlement ever discovered in Northern Europe.
Remains of an estimated 300 houses are thought to survive under earthworks 3km (2 miles) from the famous stone rings, and 10 have been excavated so far.
But there could have been double that total according to the archaeologist leading the work.
"What is really exciting is realising just how big the village for the Stonehenge builders was," says Professor Mike Parker Pearson of Sheffield University.

Stonehenge (Wilts.) is the best-known archaeological site in the British Isles. It is spectacular, but what survives is but the ruin of the final phase of a structure dating from c.4000 to c.1500 BC. The monument was orientated to mark sunrise at the midsummer solstice (and sunset at the midwinter solstice), but whether it has further astronomical significance is debatable.
