Adherence to the external forms of worship ceases when your mind is drawn
inward. The object of all such worship is to achieve this aim. In
meditation, your mind should think only of God who resides within you, and
not wander about in the midst of passing scenes of the objective life. When
you realize union with the Divine within you, you will have attained the
fruit of all your Sadhana. The mind going inward through the practice of
prayer and meditation finds the presence of the Divine first within, and
then without, everywhere. You realize that you are the Spirit, not of local
individual value, but of a universal nature and significance. You rise
above all forms, thoughts and movements in which you had been involved when
the mind was externalized. The inner perception and realization of God is
the culmination of all spiritual effort. Now you know who you are in
reality. You are verily He!

St. Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr

St. Maria Goretti (1890 – 1902), a 12-year old Italian maiden, was stabbed
to death by one who wished to seduce her.

Gospel Reading: Mt 10:1 - 7
Then he called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over the
unclean spirits to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon, called Peter, and
his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James, the
son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon, the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot,
the man who would betray him.

Jesus sent these twelve on mission with the instruction: "Do not visit
pagan territory and do not enter a Samaritan town. Go instead to the lost
sheep of the people of Israel. Go and proclaim this message: The kingdom of
heaven is near."

Reflection
"The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" This is the message of Jesus; this is
the message the Twelve and his disciples were commissioned to preach.

We, like the apostles, are tasked to speak God's words and to bring healing
to those who need it. But then you may ask, "Why would God choose me?" You
may think yourself unworthy of such an 'honor' and feel you have nothing to
offer. But are you really that different from any of the Twelve? Think
about it: His twelve apostles consisted of fishermen, tax collectors and
even one who ultimately betrayed the Lord Himself. How "worthy" were they?

Jesus chose them not because they seemed qualified or extraordinary: there
is a mystery in God's choices. He chooses based on what he knows. He knows
what we are capable of doing under his guidance.
We just have to take that leap and let him. We can, like the
disciples/apostles, perhaps very unlikely, cast out demons, cleanse lepers,
or cure diseases. However, the work of "healing" does not only come in the
form of medical miracles; it assumes many forms – like effecting a change
of heart, counseling, spreading God's word and love to others by the way we
live, in whatever station in life we may be – a teacher, a doctor, a
carpenter, a caregiver, a friend. Serving is not a grand gesture; it is
doing little things every day for the greater glory of God.

The more I sow seeds of effort, the more I reap the fruits of result.

Thought to Ponder:

When I go on putting in effort in the right direction, I will keep
gaining qualities. I will be able to keep drawing the best from
everything around and also keep receiving cooperation from people. If,
in between anything or anyone hinders this, effort needed to be put in
at that time will be not so much because I am continuing to put in my
efforts anyway.

Point to Practice:

Today I will put in efforts towards my aim, without worrying about
the results. I will at least do 3 things that can take me towards my
aim. This will ensure that I have a practice of continuous inputs.
For, I know the result will come anyway, at its own time.

The Princess of Disks

A young woman indicated by the Princess of Disks would be a quiet,
reserved person - sometimes shy. She will be practical and capable,
though rarely seeking the limelight. I used to know a stage manager
who always came up as a Princess of Disks - she loved the glitz of the
theatre as long as she could stay behind the scenes - having, of
course, created them first!

She's a gentle person who, like the Queen of Disks, is much concerned
with domestic matters, and with Nature and growth. As a result,
sometimes when this card comes up we may be looking at somebody who is
expecting a child. The Princess of Cups often represents conception,
the Princess of Disks shows the pregnancy and the Ace of Wands will
then indicate the birth.

The Princess of Disks woman is a reliable and diligent person,
trustworthy and hard-working. She is faithful by nature, and deals
badly with conflict. She likes life to unfolds in an ordered fashion.

Potato chips were invented in 1853 at Saratoga Springs, New York,
where chef George Crum of Moon's Lake House shaved potatoes paper thin

After Prometheus, a demigod in Greek mythology. He made man from clay,

MONDAY 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Jas 1:1-11 / Mk 8:11-13

JAMES 1:1-11
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, sends greetings
to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations. Consider yourselves
fortunate, my brothers and sisters, when you meet with every kind of
trial, for you know that the testing of your faith makes you
steadfast. Let your steadfastness become perfect with deeds, that you
yourselves may be perfect and blame less, without any defect. If any
of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God who gives to all easily and
unconditionally. But ask with faith, not doubting, for the one who
doubts is like a wave driven and tossed on the sea by the wind. Such a
person should not expect anything from the Lord, since the doubter has
two minds and his conduct will always be insecure. Let the believer
who is poor boast in been uplifted, and let the rich one boast in
being humbled, because he will pass away like the flower of the field.
The sun rises and its heat dries the grass; the flower withers and its
beauty vanishes. So, too, will the rich person fade away even in the
midst of his pursuits.

MARK 8:11-13
The Pharisees came and started to argue with Jesus. Hoping to
embarrass him, they asked for some heavenly sign. Then his spirit was
moved. He gave a deep sigh and said, "Why do the people of this
present time ask for a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be
given to this people." Then he left them, got into the boat again and
went to the other side of the lake.

REFLECTION
"Go home now. As you believed, so let it be." Jesus, struck by the
strong faith of the centurion, a captain in the Roman army, who asked
him to heal his servant in his house by just speaking a word, cures
his slave from a distance. This kind of faith is so different from the
skepticism of the people in today's gospel. They were expecting a
totally different type of Messiah – one who will manifest himself with
extraordinary signs, an invincible leader with devastating power. They
were blind to the signs of God's presence in everything around them.
William Barclay puts it this way: "To Jesus, such a demand (for signs)
was not due to the desire to see the hand of God; it was due to the
fact that they were blind to his hand."

May today's reading be a reminder to all of us to see, and believe,
that God is truly present in all things – the air we breathe, the
tireless beating of the heart from birth until death, the rainbow
colored flowers bathed in sunshine, and the thousand little things we
hardly notice in our daily lives – all of them whispering to each one
of us, "God loves you."

Observing the Mind Itself

The primary meditative technique of great perfection is remaining in
the state of pure awareness. This is accomplished by calming the mind and
then abiding in comprehension of its basic clear light nature. The
meditative practice involves being cognizant of the arising and passing
away of feelings, emotions, sensations, etc., but understanding them within
the context of pure awareness. The more one does this, the more one
realizes that all phenomena arise from mind and remerge into it. They are
of the nature of pure awareness and are a projection of luminosity and
emptiness. Through cultivating this understanding, mental phenomena of
their own accord begin to subside, allowing the clear light nature of mind
to become manifest. They appear as reflections on the surface of a mirror
and are perceived as illusory, ephemeral, and nonsubstantial.
Those who succeed in this practice attain a state of radical freedom:
there are no boundaries, no presuppositions, and no habits on which to
rely. One perceives things as they are in their naked reality. Ordinary
beings view phenomena through a lens clouded by concepts and
preconceptions, and most of the world is overlooked or ignored. The mind of
the great perfection adept, however, is unbounded, and everything is
possible. For many beginners, this prospect is profoundly disquieting,
because since beginningless time we have been constricted by rules, laws,
assumptions, and previous actions. One who is awakened, however, transcends
all such limitations; there is no ground on which to stand, no limits,
nothing that must be done, and no prohibitions. This awareness is
bottomless, unfathomable, immeasurable, permeated by joy, unboundedness,
and exhilaration. One is utterly free, and one's state of mind is as
expansive as space. Those who attain this level of awareness also transcend
physicality and manifest the "rainbow body" (*'ja lus*), a form comprising
pure light that cannot decay, which has no physical aspects, and which is
coterminous with the nature of mind.

Q. What is death?

A. Death is intervening sleep between two successive births while sleep
intervenes between two jagrats and both are transient. According to the
Sanskrit saying: "A wife is half the body of the husband," no doubt it is a
very sad thing for the husband if his wife dies. If one begins to think in
terms of his Atma, there is no sorrow at all. According to the Scriptures,
a wife is dear because she pleases her husband by acting up to his wishes.
Then if all this is for the pleasure of the Atman, where is the sorrow? In
spite of this, even persons who have got a glimpse of the Real Knowledge,
lose their mental equipoise when such calamities occur. During sleep one is
happy. The Self remains happy in sleep and did not see the wife. But now in
the waking state, the same Self which was happy in sleep, enjoys happiness
or misery owing to the presence of worldly things. Why should not the
happiness enjoyed in sleep by the Self be enjoyed in the waking state also?
The knowledge of the identity of body with Atman is the obstruction for
enjoying Bliss.

That which existed is always present; and that which never existed cannot
exist. What is born? What is it that dies? Waking is birth and sleeping is
death. Did your wife accompany you whenever you attended to your duties and
during your sleep? She was staying separately somewhere, but you were then
thinking that she was living. Now after her death you think that she does
not exist. Therefore the difference about your wife is in the kind of
thoughts that constitutes your sorrow that she does not exist. The whole
thing is a creation of your mind. It is that which is known as sorrow owing
to the thought of non-existence (of the wife). The whole is mental
imagination. In his own self which is by nature full of happiness or
creates sorrow. Why should there be grief for the sake of those who are
dead and since they have been freed from bondage. The Self creates grief by
entering into the thought about the dead person. Why should there be any
concern if a person is dead or exists? You must destroy your personal ego.
There is no sorrow at all if one's ego is dead. Leaving off the thought of
'I' while the body lasts is what is called the annihilation of the ego. If
the ego is not annihilated, the person will certainly feel sorry for death.
One cries for persons who are dead, but if the 'I' had been annihilated
before they died, then there is no necessity for his crying for them. Our
experience of happiness is only during profound sleep when we have ceased
to think of our bodies. Even wise men, a Jnani speaks of disembodied
liberation. Therefore a wise man, i.e. a Jnani looks for when he shall cast
off his body. Just as a cook who carries a load on his head feels relieved
soon after he reaches his destination and places it on the ground from off
his head, so a Jnani abides his time to cast off this load of his
embodiment in flesh and blood. Therefore the death of the wife who is
termed half the body of the husband should relieve husband of half his load
and therefore should make him feel happy, but it is not so considered since
we perceive these things through our physical senses. Even jnanis, wise men
though they be, are perfectly aware of the need of being disembodied for
final liberation, yet talk of liberation in the body thus implying that the
body may be made to be eternal.

Q. What is the state just before death?

A. When a person gasps for breath, it indicates that the person is
unconscious of this body; like a dream, while grasping the person is in
something like a dream, and not aware of the present environment.

Q. Does the new body involved in that state represent the next
re-incarnation of the person?

A. Yes, in this case, but there is also in other cases a period between
births. Some are born immediately after; others only after the lapse of
some time; a few are not reborn on this earth but get salvation from the
higher regions and a very few get absorbed here and now.

To a Buddhist: The idea of diversity comes with body consciousness, which
arose at some moment; it has origin and end. What originates must be
something. What is that something. It is I-consciousness. On finding its
source you realise Absolute Consciousness.

Can the world exist without one to cognise it? Which is prior--the
being-consciousness or the rising-consciousness? The former is always there
and eternal; the latter rises and disappears. It is transient.

Q: What is illusion?

A. Find out to whom is the illusion and it will vanish. It is foolish to
talk about it, for it is outside us and unknown whereas the seeker is
inside and to be known. Find out the immediate and intimate instead of what
is distant and unknown.

Q. "Brahman is real, world is illusion." is Sankara's stock phrase. Others
say the world is real. Which is true?

A. Both. They refer to different stages of development. The aspirant starts
with the definition that the Real exists always, then he eliminates world
as unreal because it is changing, and hence cannot be the Real. Ultimately
he reaches the Self and there finds unity. Then that which was originally
rejected as being unreal, is found to be part of the unity: Being absorbed
in the reality, the world is also real. There is only existence in
Realisation--and nothing but that.

Vedantins say Maya's manifestation is the display of cosmos on pure
consciousness like images in a mirror. The images cannot remain in the
absence of a mirror. So also the world cannot have an independent
existence. Sri Sankara says that the Absolute is attributeless. What is the
difference? Both agree that the display is unreal. The unreality of world
is implied by Sankara whereas it is explicit in Vedanta.

There is no difference between matter and spirit. Modern science admits
that all matter is energy. Sakti. Therefore all are resolved into Siva and
Sakti, Energy i.e. Self and Mind. The bodies are mere appearances. There is
no reality in them as such.

Q. Why does Maya become active?

A. How can this question arise? You are yourself within its fold. Are you
standing apart from that universal activity in order to ask this question?
The same power is raising this doubt in order that all doubts may finally
cease.

Maya is only Iswara-Sakti or the activity of reality.

Q. What is existence?

A. It is subject to birth and decay in order to remind us that it is not
our true state

Q. Wherefrom does the ego rise?

A. Soul, mind, ego are mere words. There are no true entities of the kind.
Consciousness is the only truth.

Forgetfulness of your real nature is the real death; remembrance of it is
the true birth. It puts an end to successive births. Yours is then eternal
life: How does the desire for eternal life arise? Because the present state
is unbearable. Why? Because, it is not your true nature. Had it been your
real nature, there would be no desire to agitate you. How does the present
state differ from your real nature? You are spirit in truth.

Man considers himself limited; there arises the trouble. The idea is wrong.
In sleep there was no world, no ego and no trouble. Something wakes up from
that happy state and says 'I'. To that ego the world appears. It is the
rise of the ego that is the cause of the trouble. Let him trace the ego to
its source and he will reach that undifferentiated happy source, a state
which is sleepless sleep. The Self is ever there; wisdom only appears to
dawn, though it is natural.

Q. Are ego and the Self the same?

A. Self can be without the ego, but the ego cannot be without the Self.
Egos are like bubbles in the ocean.

Impurities and worldly attachments affect only the ego; the Self remains
pure and unaffected.

All these are only mental concepts. You are now identifying yourself with a
wrong which is the 'I' thought. This I-thought rises and sinks whereas the
true significance of cannot do so. There cannot be a break in your being.

The father of your personal 'I' is the real I-God. Try to find out the
source of the individual I and then you will reach the other 'I'.

When the individual goes, the desires also go.

Q. What happens to a man after death?

A. Engage yourself in the living present. The future will take care of
itself. Do not worry about the future. The state before creation and the
process of creation are dealt with in the scriptures in order that you may
know the present. Because you say you are born, therefore they say it. What
is birth? Is it of the I-thought or of the body? Is "I" separate from the
body or identical? How did this I-thought arise? Is the I-thought your
nature? Or, is anything else your nature?

The Jnani's 'I' includes but does not identify himself with the body. For
there cannot be anything apart from `I' for him. If the body falls, there
is no loss for the `l . 'I' remains the same. If the body feels dead, let
it raise the question. Being inert it cannot. 'I' never dies and does not
ask. Who then dies? Who asks?

Q. Do you see the dead?

A. Yes, in dreams.

Q. Wherefrom does the ego rise?

A. Soul, mind, ego are mere words. There are no true entities of the kind.
Consciousness is the only truth.

Q. Are ego and the Self the same?

A. Self can be without the ego, but the ego cannot be without the Self.
Egos are like bubbles in the ocean.

Impurities and worldly attachments affect only the ego; the Self remains
pure and unaffected.

THE ILLUSION OF EGO EXPERIENCE

Q. How to control the mind?

A. Mind is intangible. In fact, it does not exist. The surest way of
control, is to seek it. Then its activities cease.

Seek the mind. On being sought, it will disappear. The mind is only a
bundle of thoughts. The thoughts arise because there is the thinker. The
thinker is the ego. The ego, if sought, will vanish automatically. The ego
and the mind are the same. The ego is the root-thought from which all other
thoughts arise. Dive within. You are now aware that the mind rises from
within. So sink within and seek. You need not eliminate the wrong 'I'. How
can 'I' eliminate itself? All that you need do is to find out its origin
and abide there. Your efforts can extend only thus far. Then the Beyond
will take care of itself. You are helpless there. No effort can reach it.

The individual cannot exist without the Self, but the Self can exist
without the individual.

Our analyses are ended, that is, so far as the intellect goes. But they are
not enough. Eliminating the 'not I' is not enough. The process is only
intellectual. The Truth cannot be directly pointed out. Hence the process.
Now begins the real inner quest. The 'I' thought is the root now to be
sought at its source. Find out who it is and abide there.

Q: Is the analytic process merely intellectual or does it exhibit feeling
predominantly?

A. The latter.

The personal I is a reflection of the real self in the mind.

Ask yourself the question Who am I? The body and its functions are not I.
Enquire further. The senses and their functions are not I. Going deeper,
the mind and its functions are not I. The next step is the question "Whence
do these thoughts arise?" Thoughts are spontaneous, superficial or
analytical. Who is aware of them? Their existence and operations become
evident to the individual. Analysis leads to conclusion that individuality
is operative as the awareness of existence of the thoughts. This is ego.
Enquire further; Who is this I and whence? Do sleep analysis. "I am"
underlies the three states--sleep, waking and dream. After discarding all
not-Self, we find the residue--the Self Absolute. Both world and ego are
objective and must be eliminated in the analysis. Eliminating the unreal,
the Real survives. To accomplish this, eliminate the mind, which is the
creator of the dualistic idea and of ego. Mind is one form of
life-manifestation.

1. Do Not Interfere In Others' Business Unless Asked

Most of us create our own problems by interfering too often in others'
affairs. We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way
is the best way, our logic is the perfect logic and those who do not conform
to our thinking must be criticized and steered to the right direction, our
direction. This thinking denies the existence of individuality and
consequently the existence of God. God has created each one of us in a
unique way. No two human beings can think or act in exactly the same way.
All men or women act the way they do because God within them prompts them
that way. There is God to look after everything. Why are you bothered? Mind
your own business and you will keep your peace.

2. Forgive And Forget

This is the most powerful aid to peace of mind. We often develop ill
feelings inside our heart for the person who insults us or harms us. We
nurture grievances. This in turn results in loss of sleep, development of
stomach ulcers, and high blood pressure. This insult or injury was done
once, but nourishing of grievance goes on forever by constantly remembering
it. Get over this bad habit. Believe in the justice of God and the doctrine
of Karma. Let Him judge the act of the one who insulted you. Life is too
short to waste in such trifles. Forgive, Forget, and march on. Love
flourishes in giving and forgiving.

3. Do Not Crave For Recognition

This world is full of selfish people. They seldom praise anybody without
selfish motives. They may praise you today because you are in power, but no
sooner than you are powerless, they will forget your achievement and will
start finding faults in you. Why do you wish to kill yourself in striving
for their recognition? Their recognition is not worth the aggravation. Do
your duties ethically and sincerely and leave the rest to God.

4. Do Not Be Jealous

We all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. You know
that you work harder than your colleagues in the office, but sometimes they
get promotions; you do not. You started a business several years ago, but
you are not as successful as your neighbor whose business is only one year
old. There are several examples like these in everyday life. Should you be
jealous? No .Remember everybody's life is shaped by his or her previous
Karma, which has now become his destiny. If you are destined to be rich,
nothing in the world can stop you. If you are not so destined, no one can
help you either. Nothing will be gained by blaming others for your
misfortune. Jealousy will not get you anywhere; it will only take away your
peace of mind.

5. Change Yourself According To The Environment

If you try to change the environment single-handedly, the chances are you
will fail. Instead, change yourself to suit your environment. As you do
this, even the environment, which has been unfriendly to you, will
mysteriously change and seem congenial and harmonious.

6. Endure What Cannot Be Cured

This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we
face numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations, and accidents that are
beyond our control. If we cannot control them or change them, we must learn
to put up with these things. We must learn to endure them cheerfully
thinking, "God wills it so, so be it." God's plan is beyond our
comprehension. Believe in it and you will gain in terms of patience, inner
strength and will power.

7. Do Not Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

This maxim needs to be remembered constantly. We often tend to take more
responsibilities than we are capable of carrying out. This is done to
satisfy our ego. Know your limitations. Why take on additional loads that
may create more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your
external activities. Reduce your material engagements and spend time in
prayer, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in
your mind that make you restless. Uncluttered mind will produce greater
peace of mind.

8. Meditate Regularly

Meditation calms the mind and gets rid of disturbing thoughts. This is the
highest state of peace of mind. Try and experience it yourself. If you
meditate earnestly for half an hour everyday, your mind will tend to become
peaceful during the remaining twenty-three and half-hours. Your mind will
not be easily disturbed as it was before. You would benefit by gradually
increasing the period of daily mediation. You may think that this will
interfere with your daily work. On the contrary, this will increase your
efficiency and you will be able to produce better results in less time.

9. Never Leave The Mind Vacant

An empty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil actions start in the vacant
mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile.
Actively follow a hobby. Do something that holds your interest. You must
decide what you value more: money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social
work or temple work, may not always earn you more money, but you will have a
sense of fulfillment and achievement. Even when you are resting physically,
occupy yourself in healthy reading or mental chanting of God's name.

10. Do Not Procrastinate And Never Regret

Do not waste time in protracted wondering " Should I or shouldn't I?" Days,
weeks, months, and years may be wasted in that futile mental debating. You
can never plan enough because you can never anticipate all future
happenings. Always remember, God has His own plan, too for you. Value you
time and do the things that need to be done. It does not matter if you fail
the first time. You can learn from your mistakes and succeed the next time.
Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing. Learn from your mistakes,
but do not brood over the past. DO NOT REGRET. Whatever happened was
destined to happen only that way. Take it as the Will of God. You do not
have the power to alter the course of God's Will. Why cry over spilt milk?

By using Superstring geo-electric instruments, surveyors are measuring the
resistivity of the geological layers, with additional funding being
approved from Germany to undergo excavations. The initial survey has
concluded that the structure is highly unlikely to be of natural formation.

A 3D contour plot of topographical digital data supports the followint
hypothesis, "There exists an anomaly formation made of sinder cone located
on a horizontal unconformity intrusion base." Carbon-14 dating showed the
age of the ancient top soil dated back to at least 6000 BC, and the age of
the hard soil in the lower strat to be of 7500 BC.

a series of excavations were carried out claiming, "that a number of covert
rock inscriptions were spotted," and that the pyramid buried within the

In sleep, in trance, in absent-mindedness there is no
differentiation. Is that which then was absent now? The difference is due
to mind. The mind is sometimes present and at other times absent; there is
no change in the Reality. The same person who was in sleep is now too, in
waking. The Self is the same all through.

Limitation is only in the mind. The same Self is here and now, in the
wakeful state, as in deep sleep when no limitation is felt. There was no
mind in sleep whereas it is now active. The Self exists in the absence of
mind also.

Q. Why is there no meditation during dream? Is it possible?

A. Ask it in dream. You are told to meditate now and ask who you are.
Instead of doing it you ask such question. Dream and sleep are for the same
person as waking. You are the witness of both—they pass before you. Because
you are out of meditation now, such questions arise.

What happens to the consciousness of a Realised one in sleep? Such a
question arises only in the minds of unrealised beholders. He has but One
state, which is unbroken throughout the 24 hours, whether in what you call
sleeping or waking. As a matter of fact the majority of people are all
asleep, because they are not awake to the Self.

In the deep sleep state we lay down our ego (Ahankara), our thoughts and
our desires. If we could only do all this while we are conscious, we would
realise the Self.

The best form of Dhyana or Meditation is when it continues not merely in
waking but extends to dream and deep sleep states. The meditation must be
so intense as not even to give room for the consciousness of the idea "I am
meditating." As waking and dreaming are fully occupied by the Dhyana of
such a person deep sleep may be considered to be part of the Dhyana.

Sanyasa is the giving up of the ego; even though a person may be living as
a householder in the family circle, the various occurrences of the world
will not affect him if his ego is surrendered. Thus dream experiences do
not really affect us. The dreamer as he quietly lies in his bed, dreams he
is in water, but his bed is not really wet. On the other hand, a person
though remaining in a Sanyasa ashrama who has still attachment to the body,
is a karmi, (man of action, not renunciation).

A mysterious species of ancient human has been discovered in a cave in
southern Siberia.
Nicknamed X-Woman, scientists say the human lived alongside our ancestors
tens of thousands of years ago.
The discovery, which could rewrite mankind's family tree, was made after
analysis of DNA from a fossilised finger bone.

Back in the beginning: Living 6.8million years ago this is Sahelanthropus
tchadensis. Parts of its jaw bone and teeth were found nine years ago in
the Djurab desert, Chad, and from this scientists created this model head

This young woman lived between 100,000 and 90,000 years ago. Her skull and
mandible were found in a cave in Israel in 1969 along with the remains of
20 others. The size of their skulls was higher than that of the average
person today
Experts believe the finger belonged to a child who died 48,000 to 30,000
years ago.
It was thought only two species of early humans lived at that time - the
ancestors of modern man and the Neanderthals, who died out soon afterwards.
But the DNA evidence published in the journal Nature reveals a third
species.
The latest study was based on an analysis of 'mitochondrial' DNA - a
genetic code passed from mothers to children.
Researcher Dr Svante Pääbo said the code was different from that of
Neanderthals and modern humans and was 'a new creature that's not been on
our radar screens so far'.
The scientists are unable to say what X-Woman looked like and are even
unsure if the finger belonged to a male of female, but Dr Pääbo said they
named her X-Woman 'because its mitochondrial and we want to take a feminist
tack on this'.
The discovery of the 'X-Woman' comes as scientists revealed images of what
man looked like millions of years ago.
Gathering bone fragments from across the globe, paleoanthropologists used
sophisticated research methods to form the 27 model heads, which are on
show at the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.
The exhibition goes back seven million years to sahelanthropus tchadensis
and traces the numerous stages of man culminating with modern-day homo
sapiens.
Each of the heads is used to tell its story: where they lived; what they
ate; and what killed them.
It shows how researchers today use satellite image analysis and computer
tomography.
There is little doubt that Africa is the cradle of humanity and this is
where the most ancient of the remains were unearthed. But clues to other
pre-human species have been found in the Middle East and Far East.
Only a few thousand fossils of pre-human species have ever been discovered
and entire sub-species are sometimes known only from a single jaw or
fragmentary skull.

This skull was fashioned from a skull and jaw found in the remains of 17
pre-humans (nine adults, three youths and five children) which were
discovered in the Afar Region of Ethiopia in 1975. They are believed to
have lived 3.2million years ago

Meet 'Mrs Ples' who was unearthed in Sterkfontein, South Africa in 1947.
Her whole skull was found and it is believed she lived 2.5million years
ago. Sediment traces found on the inside of her skull indicate to
scientists that she died by falling into a chalk pit

The skull of this male adult was found on the western shore of Lake Turkana
in Kenya in 1985. He is believed to have lived in 2.5million years ago. The
shape of the mouth indicates that he had a strong bite and that he could
chew sinewy plants

This species of sub-human - Homo rudolfensis - was found in Koobi Fora,
Kenya, in 1972. The adult male is believed to have lived about 1.8million
years ago. He used stone axes ate meat and plants and lived on the wooded
edge of Lake Turkana in Eastern Africa

Researchers shaped this skull on the basis of this discovery of 'Zinj' in
1959. The adult male lived 1.8million years ago in the Olduvai Gorge of
Tanzania. He would have fed himself on seeds, plants and roots which he dug
out with bones

The near-complete skeleton of 'Turkana Boy', a male adolescent aged about
13, was found in Nariokotome, Kenya, in 1984. He lived 1.6million years
ago. His teeth and skull bear a close resemblance to discoveries in Asia of
homo erectus
Experts are often forced to resort to educated guesswork to fill in the
gaps in research to come up with images of human ancestors.
Each new discovery means paleoanthropologists have to rethink the origins
of man's ancestors.
The previously held concept of primitive man - characterised by a large
brain and the ability to manufacture tools - has had to be changed by
researchers.
European natives of primitive man, homo heidelbergensis, are believed to
have been able to make perfect javelins from wood 400,000 years ago and are
also thought to have had the ability to plan for the future.
Neanderthals are also now thought to have had far more culture and craft
skills than earlier research indicated.

Discovered in Java, Indonesea, this skull belonging to 'Sangiran 17' is
believed to have belonged to an adult male who probably lived around
800,000 years ago. He was found by an Indonesian farmer hacking away in a
field. Sangiran is believed to have used fire

The discovery of this adult male in Sima de los Huesos, Spain, in 1993
points to an early stage in the evolution of neanderthal man due to the
shape of his face. 'Miquelon' was around 1.75m tall and lived about 500,000
to 350,000 years ago. His remains were found with that of 31 others which
led researchers to believe this was a burial site

The skull and jaw of this female 'hobbit' was found in Liang Bua, Flores,
Indonesia, in 2003. She was about 1m tall and lived about 18,000 years ago.
The discovery brought into question the belief that Homo sapiens was the
only form of mankind for the past 30,000 years. Homo sapiens are the
primate species to which modern humans belong

The 'Old man of La Chapelle' was recreated from the skull and jaw of a male
found near La Chapelle-aux-Saints, in France in 1908. He lived 56,000 years
ago. His skeleton indicated he suffered a number of illness including
arthritis and had numerous broken bones. This was not noticed when he was
first discovered and gave rise to the mistaken belief that neanderthal man
was a hunched individual. His relatively old age of between 40 to 50
indicates he was looked after by a clan

Give up all questions except one `who am I?' After all the only fact you
are sure of is that you `are'. The `I am' is certain, the `I am this' is
not. Struggle to find out what you are in reality.

'I am' itself is God, the seeking itself is God. In seeking you discover
that you are neither the body nor the mind, and the love of the self in you
is for the self in all. The two are one. The consciousness in you and the
consciousness in me, apparently two, really one, seek unity and that is
love. What do you love now? The `I am'. Give your heart and mind to it,
think of nothing else. This when effortless and natural, is the highest
state. In it love itself is the lover and the beloved.

The impersonal is real, the personal appears and disappears. `I am' is the
impersonal being. `I am this' is the person. The person is relative and the
pure being – the fundamental.

By focusing the mind on `I am', on the sense of being, `I am so-and-so"
dissolves; `am a witness only' remains and that too submerges in `I am
all'. Then the all becomes the One and the One – yourself, not to be
separate from me. Abandon the idea of a separate `I' and the question of
`whose experience?' will not arise. On a deeper level my experience is your
experience. Dive deep within yourself and you will find it easily and
simply. Go in the direction of `I am'.

Cling to the one thing that matters, hold on to `I am' and let go all else.
This is `sadhana'. In realization there is nothing to hold on to and
nothing to forget. Everything is known, nothing is remembered.

At the root of everything is the feeling `I am'. The state of mind `there
is a world' is secondary, for to be I do not need the world, the world
needs me.

Beyond the mind there is no such thing as experience. Experience is a dual
state. You cannot talk of reality as an experience. Once this is
understood, you will no longer look for being and becoming as separate and
opposite. In reality they are one and separable, like roots and branches of
the same tree. Both can only exist in the light of consciousness, which
again arises in the wake of the sense `I am'. This is the primary fact. If
you miss it you miss all.

Everything is a play of ideas. In the state free from ideation (nirvikalpa
samadhi) nothing is perceived. The root idea is `I am'. It shatters the
state of pure consciousness and is followed by the innumerable sensations
and perceptions, feelings and ideas, which in their totality constitute God
and His world. The `I am' remains as the witness, but it is by the will of
God that everything happens.

The concentration on `I am' is a form of attention. Give your undivided
attention to the most important thing in your life – yourself. Of your
personal universe you are the center – without knowing the center what else
can you know?

My advice to you is very simple – just remember yourself, `I am', it is
enough to heal your mind and take you beyond, just have some trust. I don't
mislead you. Why should I? Do I want anything from you? I wish you well –
such is my nature. Why should I mislead you? Commonsense too will tell you
that to fulfill a desire you must keep your mind on it. If you want to know
your true nature, you must have yourself in mind all the time, until the
secret of your being stands revealed.

It is right to say `I am', but to say `I am this', `I am that', is a sign
of not enquiring, not examining, of mental weakness or lethargy. Practice
(sadhana) consists of reminding oneself forcibly of one's pure `beingness',
of not being anything in particular, not a sum of particulars, not even the
totality of all particulars, which make up a universe.

Be content with what you are sure of. And the only thing you can be sure of
is `I am'. Stay with it and reject everything else. This is Yoga.

The one witness reflects itself in the countless bodies as `I am'. As long
as the bodies, however subtle, last, the `I am' appears as many. Beyond the
body there is only the One.

WHAT MANNER OF LOVE!
"Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we
should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1 NKJV).
For some time now, many people have been talking about love, and they
will celebrate "love" on February 14, a day popularly known as "the
Valentine's Day." However, the kind of love that people are presently
talking about and that is been celebrated on February 14 is erroneous.
It is indeed "lust" not love! Even if one claims that "the Valentine's
Day" has to do with a love between a man and a woman in love (whether
married or not), the original intention of the celebration is to
demonstrate sacrificial love of one person to another.
This manner of sacrificial love was demonstrated by God. Hear Paul:
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were
still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8 NKJV). Apostle John
explained this in other words: "For God so loved the world that He
gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16 NKJV). This sacrificial
love made everyone who accepts it to be a child of God! It made the
person to be a heir in the kingdom of God. Such a person like a true
son, not a servant or slave, can now come boldly to the throne of God
with confidence and freedom (see Ephesians 3:12; Hebrews 4:16;
10:19-23). It is a pity that the world does not know this kind of
love, hence, the wrong celebration of the Valentine's Day.
The manner of love that God had, and is still having, for the world -
the sacrificial love - the manner of love that will give out something
tangible and indelible to the recipient should be the focus of anyone
this Valentine season and all the time. The Valentine season should
remind us of a sacrificial love that we can give not only to our loved
ones, but to everyone that we encounter. It should never be a time of
satisfying one's lustful desires.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not
made perfect in love.

While I approach God with reverence and awe because he is the
holy and majestic God, I don't have to fear his presence. Because
of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, I know God is my Abba Father. He
longs for me to draw near him. He has shown me his heart by sending
Jesus. He has shown me his love by having Jesus die for me. If he
loves me that much, then I can trust that his desire is to save and
bless me. I don't have to fear his presence or his judgment. As his
child, his love has driven fear from my heart and replaced it with
love from his abiding presence, the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER:
Holy and Righteous Father, I thank you for your overwhelming
love demonstrated to me in Jesus. I thank you for providing the
atoning sacrifice for my sins and for adopting me into your family.
Father, please cast all fear from my heart and help me walk
confidently with you and for you, with character and purpose.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Faith is not the same as hope. Many time we pray in hope that God will
answer our prayers in the way we expect. But if God has not given us a
specific promise concering our request, either through a direct
promise in His word or an assurance in our heart (Ro.10:17), we really
don't know how God will answer us. If we are honest and real about
life, we have to admit that this is the case many times. After we have
prayed we wait in hope, but uncertain about the outcome. What is
certain for us is that our Father has heard our prayer, He is
almighty, all knowing, all wise and full of love for us, and that He
will answer us in the way that is really the best for us. That is our
faith in our Father.

To believe that God can do anything, or that He can do what He has
done for others, is faith in God's ability and power. But that in
itself is not the same as believing that God will actually do what we
have asked for. Has He told us He will do it, or are we just hoping
that He will do it? If He has told us in our heart then we can have
faith that it will happen just as He has said (Mt.8:13).

We shouldn't be confused between hope and faith. When we have an
assurance in our heart that what we hope for will come true, that is
faith (He.11:1). This assurance is given to us by God specifically in
different situations. We know it when we have it. But this is
different from us trying to make ourselves come to that assurance--by
repeating words from the Bible or 'positive' words and avoiding
'negative' words. That will be like us making things happen (which we
can't do; we are not gods), and not God answering our prayer through
His grace.

When we have prayed in hope, and when we are uncertain about how
things would turn out, that is when our faith in our Father will be
our strength. "We don't know the future, but we know the One who holds
the future." Just as a young child derives his confidence and strength
from his father's finger which he holds on to, we too can stand firm,
without wavering, knowing that our future is safe in our Father's
hands. Then we would be glad if our Father answers our prayer in the
way we want or the way He wants. We know He knows best, and that
knowledge helps us to have the attitude, "Not my will, Father, but
Yours."

Those who wait on God will not be disappointed (Is.49:23). We may be
disappointed when we don't get what we asked for, but we will not be
disappointed in the ultimate sense because our Father always plans for
our welfare and not for calamity (Je.29:11), and He causes even the
disappointing things that come to us to work for our eternal good (Ro.
8:28,29).

This kind of faith in our Father helps us not to be moved by things
that happen to us. People who have been taught to 'believe' that they
will always get whatever they ask for get disappointed many times, and
some of them even fall away from God. The fault is not with God, but
an unrealistic understanding of faith that they had.

Queen of Cups

Within the Suit of Cups, the card associated with PISCES is the Queen
(sometimes also referred to as the Queen of the Thrones of the
Waters). This card belongs to the Court Cards of the Tarot and is
known to be The Feeler or The Sensate One. It is the watery quality of
water, typifiying this element's passive, reflective and receptive

The Queen of Cups

If the Queen of Cups appears in a reading to indicate a woman, she
will be a gentle and tranquil woman, romantic by nature, generous with

Butterfingers

Meaning

A name playfully applied to someone who fails to catch a ball or lets
something slip from their fingers.

Origin

Charles Dickens - butterfingers In the week of the bicentenary of
Charles Dickens' birth (7th February 1812), I thought it would be nice
to include a phrase coined by him. It ought not to be too difficult to
find one, after all, Dickens ranks sixth on the 'number of English
words coined by an individual author' list. Passing over contenders
like 'slow-coach' and 'cloak and dagger' I alighted on
'butterfingers', which several authorities say was invented by
Dickens. Not quite a phrase but, as it was coined as the hyphenated
'butter-fingers', it's close enough. Dickens used the term in The
Pickwick Papers (more properly calledThe Posthumous Papers of the
Pickwick Club), 1836:

At every bad attempt at a catch, and every failure to stop the ball,
he launched his personal displeasure at the head of the devoted
individual in such denunciations as 'Ah, ah! - stupid' - 'Now,
butter-fingers' - 'Muff' - 'Humbug' - and so forth.

It seemed as though that was all there was to say about the
word/phrase but, as I usually like to add a little more, I delved
further. The British Library's excellent new database of 19th century
newspapers turned up a reference to 'butter-fingers' in the Yorkshire
newspaperThe Leeds Intelligencer dated May 1823. Pre-Pickwick,
clearly. Looking closer, it appeared that the writer was quoting from
what he called 'a scarce book' - The English Housewife. Delving again,
I found that the book, written by the English writer Gervase Markham
in 1615, scarce as it may have been in 1823, is still available today.
Markham's recipe for a good housewife was:

'First, she must be cleanly in body and garments; she must have a
quick eye, a curious nose, a perfect taste, and ready ear; she must
not be butter-fingered, sweet-toothed, nor faint-hearted - for the
first will let everything fall; the second will consume what it should
increase; and the last will lose time with too much niceness.

Markham's views aren't quite what would be accepted now, any more than
his remedy for the plague - 'smell a nosegay made of the tasselled end
of a ship rope', but he does at least make it clear that
'butterfingers' was in use in 1615 with the same meaning we have for
it today, that is, someone likely to drop things - as if their hands
were smeared with butter, like a cook's.

Many of the later examples of 'butterfingers' in print relate to the
game of cricket, which was and still is the principal ball-catching
game in England. The term is often used as an amiable taunt when
someone fails to make an easy catch. As the word spread to other
countries, notably America, it was taken into the language of the
local catching game, ie baseball, and 'no-hoper' teams were unkindly
given that name. The Salt Lake Tribune reported on such a team in May
1899:

'The Butterfingers will cross bats with the Salt Lake Juniors at
Calder's Park Tuesday'.

As for Dickens, he may have missed out on 'butterfingers' but he has
many other words and phrases to lay claim to, and he did write some
exceedingly good books.

A useful word, concise and immediately self-explanatory, unlike its
synonym, losel. The Latin word from which wastrel is derived also gave
rise to the adjective "vastatrix", contained in the name of the vine
louse Phylloxera vastatrix, the cause of the disease that devastated
innumerable French vineyards in the 19th century and was responsible
indirectly for giving the New World an entry into the international
wine market: North American vines were immune to the disease.

Well, now, this word hit me where I live! My mother often called me a
"clumsy lummox". Had I had as much sass in me then as I have now, I
would have told her she was being redundant, but that probably would
have earned me a thumping of some sort. It's funny how a single word
can transport you to a whole other place!

Def: noun: One who takes up an activity or interest in a superficial
or casual way; adjective: Superficial; amateurish.

Time was, and not so long ago at that, when athletes were required to
take an amateur oath before competing in the Olympic Games.
Professionalism was frowned upon, the word evoking condescension, not
to say condemnation.

While today 'amateur' designates one not making a living from his
hobby (yet doing it with zest), dilettante has become a term of
derision, especially when compared to the proficiency of the
professional. In Monty Python's memorable vignette the pro pugilist
Muhammad Ali, recently capped and gowned by the University of Oxford,
delivers a roundhouse punch to the amateur boxer Lord Kenneth Clark,
writer, historian, philosopher.

A well-aimed uppercut will ineluctably trump Civilization.

As a 75-year-old dinosaur who still uses the middle of the last
century as reference for social and business conventions, I offer the
tale of my personal "business cards".

A few years ago I got fed up with the way "that generation" pass out
their personal cards. It's a good idea but what I saw were all these
insecure self-absorbed little bunnies using them to say "I'm Important
and you are expected to remember that!"

So I had some printed for myself. Nice little conservative engraved
numbers -- mailing address lower right, phone number lower left. In
the centre, under my name, it says "Dilettante".

I keep forgetting that I have them but once in a long while I am moved
to pull one out of my wallet. A couple of times I've had someone look
at me blankly and ask "What's a dile-tent? A dilly-tant? What do you
do?" whereupon I hope to remember to explain that "a dilettante is
someone who knows a little bit about a lot of things and not much
about anything." Like myself, they're getting a little worn looking
after all that time in my wallet, not up to the spanking clean ones
with gilt and colour The Important People use, and most of the time
mine get left on the table with the gravy stain... but like many of
these things in our brave new world I'm learning to view their
function as being designed to give ME a smile, me me me me me, and to
heck with anyone else.

Ah, this one I recognized from the song Sixteen Going on Seventeen
from Sound of Music. I saw the movie when I was nine years old, bought
the soundtrack album and promptly memorized every word of every song
while re-enacting key scenes in the living room. I have always thought
that "roue" was a synonym for "cad", but now I know that a roue is a
creepy old man while a cad is a creepy young one!

Subject: Charles Dickens's quotation about cheerfulness and
contentment preserving youthful looks

On a trip to a National Park my brother handed the female guard his
license and she noticed that he did not qualify for a Senior Pass. I
quickly gave her my driver's license which showed that I was 69. The
guard, in disbelief, said "You don't look 69, what do you do?" to
which I replied, naively, "I am a scientist and an artist". "No", she
demanded "What do you do to look the way you do? What are your
secrets?" I answered "I have a happy marriage and I'm very content
with my life." Now, thanks to AWAD, I have the affirmation of Charles
Dickens to support my analysis: "Cheerfulness and contentment are
great beautifiers and are famous preservers of youthful looks".

In reference to Samuel Butler and Samuel Butler, and the suggestion
that no two writers should have the same name, Winston Churchill,
grandson of the Duke of Marlborough, became a published author, and
learned that an American novelist named Winston Churchill had become
rich and famous (in America), and according to legend wrote to him and
suggested that the other man should write under a different name, to
avoid confusion. The American wrote back to agree that they should not
both publish under the same name, and as he had been using the name
three years longer (born in 1871 vs. 1874), the younger man should
change. Thereafter the younger man signed his works as Winston S.
Churchill (the American had only two names).
