Around 129 planes have disappeared over the waters in the Bermuda Triangle between 1945 and 2008. After 2008, documented cases of unexplained aircraft disappearances in the area simply seem to stop, which deepens the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle even more. Detailed information about aircraft disappearances that occurred during World War II and shortly afterward can be found from numerous sources, as these events have become legendary in the unexplained and paranormal world.

However, reports on recent unexplained aircraft disappearances are much harder to find, possibly because of advances in modern technology. The three most recent include:

2005- June 20, a Piper PA- 23 vanished between Treasure Cay, Bahamas and Ft Pierce, Florida with three people aboard
2007- April 10, a Piper PA- 46-310P disappeared near Berry Islands with only the pilot on board
2008- December 15, a Britten Norman Islander vanished near the Windward Islands with 11 passengers aboard

Not all disappearances are related to mysterious circumstances, but the number is staggering when you calculate the odds of so many aircraft and ships disappearing in a specific region. Obviously, a percentage would be due to engine failures, squalls and other sudden storms.

June 18, 2003 - Frank and Romina Leone left Boynton Beach Inlet, Florida in their 16-foot boat for a day excursion. They and their boat were never found. The couple was fondly remembered in a June 24, 2003, SunSentinel article that reports Romina was looking forward to her first fishing trip on the boat with her husband, Frank. The Leones launched their boat on a Wednesday afternoon and when the young couple failed to show up at each of their jobs in West Palm Beach in the next couple of days, coworkers, friends and family feared the worst. The Coast Guard launched a rescue mission early Friday morning, which covered over 35,700 square miles from Miami to Savannah, Georgia before it was called off around 6 pm the following Monday.
October-November, 2003 - A fishing boat with the tragically ironic name of "What's Left" was found capsized on a beach near Cape Canaveral. In an article, human remains found on the boat were believed to be one of the missing boaters: Gary Lisk, 61, Neil Eddleman, 47 and son, Neil Allen Eddleman, 13, who left on October 17 for a day fishing trip. The wreckage washed up 527 miles away from where the trio had launched at Gordon Pass. How the boat ended up where it was found baffled authorities, who could only speculate that the boat may have been caught in the Atlantic Gulf Stream, a slow moving current that travels up the eastern U.S. coast.

March 23, 2004 - A 19-foot fishing boat owned by 40-year-old fishing enthusiast Glen Jamison left Hudson, Florida around 4 am Sunday, and was scheduled to return that night. The boat was discovered 32 miles west of Egmont Key, Florida, but Jamison was missing. According to the St. Petersburg Times, although Jamison loved to fish he could not swim at all. When the boat was found, the engine was tilted up with fishing line wrapped around the propeller. A nearby knife led family members and authorities to the conclusion that Jamison had been trying to cut the fishing line off of the propeller when he fell overboard.

Now on Social Media like Facebook and Twitter many of the posts are embedded with catchy phrases like "Breaking", "Shocking Video" and "People found alive". Links posted on Facebook point to a video of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. These fake ‘breaking news’ clips, which falsely claim the missing plane MH 370 has been found in Bermuda Triangle! 50 Passengers alive! Breaking news video footage of this miracle just released on CNN! These are fake and false news.

Reality of these Posts: In March 2014, Facebook users begin seeing posts that featured a snapshot of an airliner afloat in water with a caption describing it as the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, supposedly "found in [the] Bermuda Triangle" with "Passengers alive!"

These come-ons typically included titillating tag lines such as "Breaking news video footage of this miracle just released on CNN!" to entice Facebook users to click on hyperlinks in expectation of viewing video footage of this enthralling news story.

There was no such video to be seen, however. Users who did click through on such links were taken to a faux Facebook page which eventually led them down the trail of the usual survey scam, directing them to "like" or "share" links with their Facebook friends and complete online surveys, all with the goal of getting them to enrich scammers by disclosing sensitive personal information, spreading malware, buying products, and signing up for costly, difficult-to-cancel services.

The image accompanying such posts actually shows a Lion Air Boeing 737 airliner that careered off a runway and crashed into the sea in Bali in April 2013 (with no fatalities).
There is no relation between the Bermuda Triangle and the Missing Flight MH 370 of Malaysia because the route of the flight was not over through the area of the Bermuda Triangle.

Solar wind, a stream of charged particles jettisoned by the sun’s surface, travels over 90 million miles through space before it hits the Earth’s magnetosphere, where most of its energy is deflected. Some scientists believe that eruptions of methane gas could be responsible for ship disappearances in the Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle (a.k.a. the Devil's Triangle) is a triangular area in the Atlantic Ocean bounded roughly at its points by Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. Legend has it that many people, ships and planes have mysteriously vanished in this area. How many have mysteriously disappeared depends on who is doing the locating and the counting. The size of the triangle varies from 500,000 square miles to three times that size, depending on the imagination of the author. (Some include the Azores, the Gulf of Mexico, and the West Indies in the "triangle.") Some trace the mystery back to the time of Columbus. Even so, estimates range from about 200 to no more than 1,000 incidents in the past 500 years. Howard Rosenberg claims that in 1973 the U.S. Coast Guard answered more than 8,000 distress calls in the area and that more than 50 ships and 20 planes have gone down in the Bermuda Triangle within the last century.

Many theories about Bermuda Triangle have been given to explain the extraordinary mystery of these missing ships and planes. Evil extraterrestrials, residue crystals from Atlantis, evil humans with anti-gravity devices or other weird technologies, and vile vortices from the fourth dimension are favorites among fantasy writers. Strange magnetic fields and oceanic flatulence (methane gas from the bottom of the ocean) are favorites among the technically-minded. Weather (thunderstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, high waves, currents, etc.) bad luck, pirates, explosive cargoes, incompetent navigators, and other natural and human causes are favorites among skeptical investigators.

There are some skeptics who argue that the facts do not support the legend, that there is no mystery to be solved, and nothing that needs explaining. The number of wrecks in this area is not extraordinary, given its size, location and the amount of traffic it receives. Many of the ships and planes that have been identified as having disappeared mysteriously in the Bermuda Triangle were not in the Bermuda Triangle at all. Investigations to date have not produced scientific evidence of any unusual phenomena involved in the disappearances. Thus, any explanation, including so-called scientific ones in terms of methane gas being released from the ocean floor, magnetic disturbances, etc., are not needed. The real mystery is how the Bermuda Triangle became a mystery at all.

The modern legend of the Bermuda Triangle began soon after five Navy planes [Flight 19] vanished on a training mission during a severe storm in 1945. The most logical theory as to why they vanished is that lead pilot Lt. Charles Taylor’s compass failed. The trainees' planes were not equipped with working navigational instruments. The group was disoriented and simply, though tragically, ran out of fuel. No mysterious forces were likely to have been involved other than the mysterious force of gravity on planes with no fuel. It is true that one of the rescue planes blew up shortly after take-off, but this was likely due to a faulty gas tank rather than to any mysterious forces.

Over the years there have been dozens of articles, books, and television programs promoting the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. In his study of this material, Larry Kusche found that few did any investigation into the mystery. Rather, they passed on the speculations of their predecessors as if they were passing on the mantle of truth. Of the many uncritical accounts of the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, perhaps no one has done more to create this myth than Charles Berlitz, who had a bestseller on the subject in 1974. After examining the 400+ page official report of the Navy Board of Investigation of the disappearance of the Navy planes in 1945, Kusche found that the Board wasn't baffled at all by the incident and did not mention alleged radio transmissions cited by Berlitz in his book. According to Kusche, what isn't misinterpreted by Berlitz is fabricated. Kusche writes: "If Berlitz were to report that a boat were red, the chance of it being some other color is almost a certainty." (Berlitz, by the way, did not invent the name; that was done by Vincent Gaddis in "The Deadly Bermuda Triangle," which appeared in the February, 1964, issue of Argosy, a magazine devoted to fiction.)

In short, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle became a mystery by a kind of communal reinforcement among uncritical authors and a willing mass media to uncritically pass on the speculation that something mysterious is going on in the Atlantic.
