Korean scientists claim to have cloned glowing dogs

South Korean scientists say they have engineered four beagles that glow red using cloning techniques that could help develop cures for human diseases.
All four dogs are named "Ruppy" - a combination of the words "ruby" and "puppy".They look like typical beagles by daylight, but they glow red under ultraviolet light, and the dogs' nails and abdomens, which have thin skins, look red even to the naked eye.

Seoul National University professor Lee Byeong-chun, head of the research team, called them the world's first transgenic dogs carrying fluorescent genes, an achievement that goes beyond just the glowing novelty.
"What's significant in this work is not the dogs expressing red colors but that we planted genes into them," Lee told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
His team identified the dogs as clones of a cell donor through DNA tests and earlier this month introduced the achievement in a paper on the Web site of the journal "Genesis."
Scientists in the U.S., Japan and in Europe previously have cloned fluorescent mice and pigs, but this would be the first time dogs with modified genes have been cloned successfully, Lee said.

He said his team took skin cells from a beagle, inserted fluorescent genes into them and put them into eggs before implanted them into the womb of a surrogate mother, a local mixed breed.
Six female beagles were born in December 2007 through a cloning with a gene that produces a red fluorescent protein that make them glow. Two died, but the four others survived.
The glowing dogs show that it is possible to successfully insert genes with a specific trait, which could lead to implanting other, non-fluorescent genes that could help treat specific diseases.

Lee said that his team has started to implant human disease-related genes in the course of dog cloning, saying that will help them find new treatments for genetic diseases such as Parkinson's. He refused to provide further details, saying the research was still under way.
A South Korean scientist who created glowing cats in 2007 based on a similar cloning technique said that Lee's puppies are genuine clones, saying he had seen them and had read about them in the journal.
"We can appraise this is a step forward" toward finding cures for human diseases, said veterinary professor Kong Il-keun at South Korea's Gyeongsang National University. "What is important now is on what specific diseases (Lee's team) will focus on."
Lee was a key aide to disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk, whose breakthroughs on stem cell research were found to have been made using faked data. Independent tests, however, later proved the team's dog cloning was genuine.

In the field of barley, in the south-east England, there has emerged a large stylized image of jellyfish, started new doubts about whether it is a human hand, or some other natural force.

While experts try to figure out the origin and meaning of 250 meters long and 60 meters wide picture of Medusa in the barley, the property owners from Oxfordshire , Bill and Sally Spens. Giant ice circles mystery solved

Strange circles have once again appeared in the frozen surface of Lake Baikal in Siberia, as spotted by astronauts aboard the International Space Station this April. News reports described the ice rings as a puzzling phenomenon.

But experts say they can explain the mystery, and it's not aliens — methane gas rising from the lake floor represents the likely culprit.

Methane emissions can create a rising mass of warm water that begins swirling in a circular pattern because of the Coriolis force, or the phenomenon caused by the Earth's rotation that also helps create cyclones.

"Once the water mass reaches the underside of the ice on the surface of the lake, the warm water melts the ice in a ring shape," said Marianne Moore, a marine ecologist at Wellesley College in Massachusetts who has spent much time studying Lake Baikal with Russian researchers. The lake is the largest (by volume) and deepest fresh water lake on Earth.

The latest ring patterns included a circle of thin ice with a diameter of 2.7 miles (4.4 km), although the circular patch was becoming a hole of open water. Astronauts spotted similar ice circles in both 1985 and 1994, and satellites have also made sightings over the past years.

This phenomenon is nothing new to the Russian government, which has documented circle sightings on an official Ministry of Natural Resources Web site.

"Interestingly, the government is also warning people that abnormally high emissions of methane may occur in these areas in the summer and fall, posing risks for ships," Moore told LiveScience.

The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources points out that random emissions of natural gas have probably always occurred in Lake Baikal. And such emissions would have created ice rings every few years.

"But, because of the huge size, it is practically impossible to see a ring standing on the ice or even from a mountain," the Ministry Web site notes. The Russian government has ordered daily space monitoring of the Lake Baikal area in recent years, which prompted many of the satellite sightings.

Tectonic activity deep in the Earth may be the trigger for such methane gas release, according to the Russian government.

That could have major consequences for Lake Baikal's rich array of plants and animals, Moore cautioned — especially in combination with a warming climate. Both could lead to spring ice disappearing more rapidly from Lake Baikal, which can typically hold onto an ice cover through June.

"Unlike other lakes in the world, spring ice is essential for the reproduction of the lake's top predator (the Baikal seal) and the dominant plants (under-ice phytoplankton) at the bottom of the food web," Moore said. "Without spring ice, the food web of this lake will be disrupted substantially."

Honda has developed new brain-machine interface (BMI) technology that allows humans to control the Asimo humanoid robot simply by thinking certain thoughts.

The BMI system, which Honda developed along with Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Shimadzu Corporation, consists of a sensor-laden helmet that measures the user’s brain activity and a computer that analyzes the thought patterns and relays them as wireless commands to the robot.

When the user simply thinks about moving his or her right hand, the pre-programmed Asimo responds several seconds later by raising its right arm. Likewise, Asimo lifts its left arm when the person thinks about moving their left hand, it begins to walk when the person thinks about moving their legs, and it holds its hand up in front of its mouth when the person thinks about moving their tongue.

The high-precision BMI technology relies on three different types of brain activity measurements. EEG (electroencephalography) sensors measure the slight fluctuations in electrical potential on the scalp that occur when thinking, while NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) sensors measure changes in cerebral blood flow. Newly developed information extraction technology is used to process the complex data from these two types of sensors, resulting in a more accurate reading. The system reportedly has an accuracy rate of more than 90%.

The use of EEG and NIRS sensors makes the new system more compact than previous BMI systems that rely on bulkier fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) technology. Although the system is small enough to be transported from place to place, the developers plan to further reduce the size.

Honda, which has been conducting BMI research and development with ATR since 2005, is looking into the possibility of one day using this type of interface technology with artificial intelligence and robotics to create devices that users can operate without having to move.

A mound of earth that 1,300 years ago looked like the pyramid pictured was restored to its original shape and unveiled Friday after a five-year restoration project in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture. The earthen pyramid called Doto is a kind of Buddhist stupa, where relics of Buddha are supposedly stored. The original structure is believed to have been built on the orders of the priest Gyoki (668-749) and is designated as a historic site. It is thought to stand on the site of the Onodera temple, which was built by Gyoki in 727. The new structure measures 53.1 meters on each side and stands 8.6 meters. It is adorned with 50,000 reddish-brown tiles. A similar pyramid stupa, called Zuto, stands in Nara, but its base measurements are 20 meters shorter. The Sakai pyramid is the largest earthwork stupa in Japan, according to a local cultural assets official. It had been reduced to a mere ``heap of earth" before the city conducted a survey from fiscal 1998 to 2003 and started restoration work in fiscal 2004.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi aged 93 is both the unluckiest and luckiest man in existence. He was in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the bombs dropped, yet somehow survived both explosions. He was on a business trip on the 6th of August 1945 in Hiroshima when the first bomb was dropped. He obviously survived, but received serious burns to his body. Somehow, he got up the next day and returned home to Nagasaki, just in time for it to be dropped on him again.

The Japanese government knew he survived the Nagasaki bomb, but only now did they realize he survived the Hiroshima bomb as well. He says “It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die.” Not to offend your accomplishment Mr. Yamaguchi, but your survival doesn’t really show the world the horrifying history of the atomic bombings; you survived after all! Next time tell us sooner of your epic survival story!

Scientists Grow A Living Human 'Brain'

Scientists in Birmingham have grown a living human 'brain'.

The team at Aston University created tiny bundles of cells which act like a mini nervous system.
They believe it could help find a cure for degenerative conditions like Alzheimer's, motor neurone or Parkinson's disease.
Professor Michael Coleman is leading the research.
He explained: "We are aiming to be able to study the human brain at the most basic level, using an actual living human cellular system.
"Cells have to be alive and operating efficiently to enable us to really understand how the brain works."
The experiment involves altering cells from a cancer tumour and making them behave like brain cells.
Although far from finished, scientists hope the fake brain cells will give them a greater understanding of how real brains work.
This, in turn, could significantly further research into conditions which affect the brain.
Neil Hunt, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, said: "It is still very early days, but in the future this interesting research could lead to a useful tool for investigating dementia."
The technique could also provide an alternative to animal testing and is being supported and funded by the Humane Research Trust.
Over the next ten years a million people will develop dementia, but campaigners say research into the disease is hugely under-funded.
Current treatments cause unpleasant side-effects and do not halt the progression of conditions.
Professor Coleman believes his findings could change this.
He said: "We hope our technique will provide scientists with a new and highly relevant human experimental model to help us understand the brain better and develop new drugs and treatments to tackle neurodegenerative disease."

Image Of Jesus Appears On Building

Jonathon Elias of WBZ in Boston reports on the mysterious appearance of a life-sized portrait of Jesus that showed up on the wall of a video store in New Bedord, a small city south of Boston.

The seven-foot picture of Jesus showed up on the side of the building sometime around Friday night into Saturday morning. And ever since this picture appeared, so have the curious and the faithful. Flowers and a candle have been left at the feet of the portrait.

There are two mysteries surrounding the statue, Elias reports.

Who did this, and why is Jesus covering his eyes?

"The message is we're in deep doo-doo," said one woman.

"I don't know ...Maybe he doesn't want to look at New Bedford anymore," said another man.

Boy saved by Spiderman

A firefighter donned a Spiderman costume to coax a frightened 11-year-old boy from a balcony in Thailand.
The boy, who has autism, had crawled on to a third floor balcony at Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok, reports Asia One News.
Fire crews rushed to the scene with an air cushion after being alerted that teachers at the special needs centre were trying to talk down the crying pupil.
The boy's mother arrived an hour later and suggested that her son would listen to a superhero character.
Fireman Somchai Yoosabai changed into a Spiderman costume normally used to entertain kids during fire drills and leapt into action.
The sight of his hero holding a glass of juice for him brought a big smile to the boy's face and he rushed to embrace his hero.
A teacher said it had been the boy's first day in class. He suddenly began crying for his mother and then ran out onto the balcony.

"As soon as Haider Kadhim (the player) was alone in front of the goalkeeper and close to equalizing, a fan in the crowd fired a pistol at him," a senior police officer in Hilla, who declined to be named, said Thursday.

"We arrested this fan immediately but unfortunately the player died. "

The incident, which took place Saturday in Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, during a match between local teams, underlines the lawlessness of the Iraqi people.

Iraqis love soccer and have often expressed hope the game would help reconcile warring ethnic groups and sects.

Iraq's surprise victory in the 2007 Asian Cup brought rare joy and unity to the shattered nation, with Shi'ites, Sunni Arabs and Kurds pouring into the streets to celebrate their team's 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the Jakarta final.

American firefighter who was lost power of speech after car accident can speak again thanks to parrots.

Brian Wilson suffered a life-threatening injuries in a car accident before 14 years, and between the other things he no longer were able to speak.

Members of his family in the beginning tried to learn him to speak, but they cancel in time. Unhappy man saved his two parrots, which are from day to day, repeated words that they knew. At the end Brian spoken and shocked even doctors.

"Parrots learned me to speak. I had really serious head injury and doctors have claimed that I may speak at the level of two year old boy.On my luck to parrots that was not mean anything and are always been with me chatting. A businessman Andrew Cheatle who lost his mobile phone on a beach was amazed when it turned up - in the belly of a giant cod.
Andrew Cheatle thought it had been swept out to sea after it slipped from his pocket.
But a week later his girlfriend's mobile rang and it was fisherman Glen Kerley saying he'd found the phone in fish, reports Ananova.
Andrew got the handset back, dried it out - and amazingly it still works.
Andrew, said: "I was messing about with my dog and my phone must have fallen out and been swept out in the swell. I kept calling it but I gave up hope after a couple of days."
He was shopping for a new phone with girlfriend Rita Smith, when her mobile went off.
She told him: "Your old mobile number is calling my phone."
Andrew continued: "She said some guy was going on about my phone and a cod so she handed it over to me and he told me where he had found it.
"I thought he was winding me up but he assured me he had caught a cod that morning and was gutting it for his fish stall and that my phone was inside it - a bit worse for wear."
Glen, of Worthing, West Sussex, said: "Cod are greedy fish - they'll eat anything. They have big heads and big mouths.
"I've found plastic cups, stones, teaspoons, batteries and I've also heard of someone finding false teeth in one.
"It was a bit smelly but I was glad to return it."

Rollerblading pensioner 'a danger to the public'

Rollerblading pensioner Geoff Dornan charged with rollerskating dangerously in a public place, writes BBC.
71 year old skater Geoff Dornan has vowed to appeal after magistrates handed him a rollerblading ban on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr Dornan was landed with a bill of £2,092 in costs and court charges after being found guilty of breaking by-laws in Chapel Street, Southport, But he has vowed to fight the magistrates’ decision at crown court.
Defending his behaviour and claiming that he was "safe skating" Mr Dornan told the court that many people misunderstood the threat he posed to shoppers.
He remarked: "It's said I weave in and out of people – I don't say that's a bad thing.
"I try where possible to go behind people so that I don't get in their way."
The OAP talked the court through CCTV footage repeatedly stopping the tape to explain his actions and state of mind.
Mr Dornan claimed that he skated at a speed of eight or nine miles an hour and added: "Often I'm deliberately dawdling until a gap opens up."
Citing a letter written by Mr Dornan to Merseyside Police, prosecuting solicitor Suzette Cain said: "People had actually objected to the manner of your skating.
"[In the letter] you were representing their opinion of you at the time."
Ms Cain then pointed out that Chapel Street was one of the busiest shopping streets at that time of day, and asked Mr Dornan why he couldn't skate on the sea front, rather than in town's pedestrianised area.
Mr Dornan responded: "Why should I skate there?"
Defence solicitor Andrew Scott repeatedly reminded the bench that Chapel Street is covered by council by-laws that restrict – but do not prohibit – rollerblading.
The Ormskirk pernsioner appeared before North Sefton Magistrates to complete the part-heard case which had been brought against him by Sefton Council.
This week Mr Dornan appeared in the Southport court for the third time in six weeks.
The first case brought by Merseyside Police was dropped on January 12 but Sefton Council continued with its own legal action against the pensioner.
That case was opened on January 19, but was adjourned until Tuesday because magistrates didn't have time to view all the evidence in one sitting.

A teenage surfer who refused to quit the sport after losing an arm to a shark has triumphed in the world championships.
Bethany Hamilton was 13 when a 15-foot Tiger shark mauled her while she was surfing in Hawaii in 2003.
But she refused to give up her dream and last week was runner-up in the ASP World Junior Women's Surfing Championships, reports the Daily Mirror.
Bethany, now 18, said: ?It never crossed my mind that I might never get on a surfboard again.
-"I was sceptical about whether I would actually be able to do it or not. But before I even left hospital, I decided that I was going to surf."
Unbelievably, Bethany, from Hawaii, was back on the waves three weeks after the attack.
She said: "I had to work on my fear of sharks. Still to this day I get scared. But I thought ?This is not going to defeat me?"

Cartoon (left), which appeared in yesterday's issue of New York tabloid owned by Rupert Mardoka, connects the two recent events that have attracted the attention of Americans - Obama's package of economic assistance and the case which occurred in the state of Connecticut, where the police had to kill a crazy chimp that celebrated with appearance in a TV ad.

The drawing is now sharply criticized black activist Al Sharpton, stating that "in the least disturbing" given that in the past African-Americans, "compared with monkeys."

Up until now diamond has been considered to be the hardest material known to man, but scientists from two universities in Shanghai and Las Vegas have conducted new resarch in to a material known as wurtzite boron nitride which is believed to be even harder. On top of that, another material known as lonsdaleite may be even harder than that.

"Currently, diamond is regarded to be the hardest known material in the world. But by considering large compressive pressures under indenters, scientists have calculated that a material called wurtzite boron nitride (w-BN) has a greater indentation strength than diamond. The scientists also calculated that another material, lonsdaleite (also called hexagonal diamond, since it’s made of carbon and is similar to diamond), is even stronger than w-BN and 58 percent stronger than diamond, setting a new record."
