Mystic is known for four VERY different but complementary destinations. 

The Downtown Mystic area, around the Drawbridge was my favorite place to go growing up.  You could find me visiting the Arcade, Bee Bee Dairy, and Cottrell Lumber yard at least once a month.  At the same time, my grandfather's house, where Mystic Knotwork was first conceived, was halfway between there and the Olde Mistick Village.  I spent too much time in the bookstore there as well as the General Store, and Imagine Gifts.

Over the last 50 years, both spaces have grown and adapted.  The downtown Mystic area is turning into a foodie paradise with a parking problem, while the Olde Mistick Village has become a union of an eclectic food scene interspersed with an immersive space of calm interactions and the most unique shops in the state.  Where else can you feed the ducks while waiting for a brick oven pizza, then browsing shops like Cloak & Wand, Arisu an anime shop, and Crest & Compass a heraldry shop.

We couldn't imagine the Olde Mistick Village without our unique experience.  As anyone who's visited our Downtown shops know, we are here to make your custom designed sailor bracelet, anchor bracelet, adjustable, or other designs while you watch.  

Our new shop in the Olde Mistick Village has so much parking, so easy to walk to our front door directly, or be part of your stroll exploring approximately 39 shops in the village. The following photos show the renovation progress.

In the new shop you'll find our coasters, trivets, and doormats along side our impossibly huge variety of bracelets.  The tie dye ones are the most popular because they are so unique we don't sell them on our website.

We are thinking of expanding our lines to include other locally made nautical work, the shop is HUGE compared to the one on Holmes Street.  If you have suggestions, please let us know by email.

The energy of our team is at an all time high as we anticipate the fun of joining the Olde Mistick Village community and serving our friends and customers there with the same attentions that make our team the envy of the other shops in town.  It also means we need to learn the Olde Mistick Village as intimately as we know downtown so we can serve as a gateway to the rest of the treasurers in our new neighborhood.

When people ask why, my fun response is, "originally, Jill asked me to build a shop closer to her parent's house, so we opened 600 feet closer.  She asked us to move up closer still, so now we are two miles closer, with only 40 miles to go."

In the heart of Mystic, CT we tie our knots. New designs, projects, custom decor it is all happening. So many photo opportunities. Here is a small collection of images from 2025, some taken by us and some by our customers, of our knots in their homes or with their pets.

We have fun designing our ornaments. The artisans come up with an idea like the Santa or the snowman then everyone figures out how to engineer it. Wonderful to watch this creativity!

Visiting Mystic

November and December are great months to visit us, stroll through downtown Mystic, shop and grab a bite all within walking distance of our shops. The decorations and lights are up everywhere creating a happy and warm atmosphere. Stroll downtown, and/or the shops at Olde Mistick Village and watch for special events at the Mystic Seaport and the Aquarium. Plenty to do.

Tree Topper

The crew from the Mystic Shipyard orchestrated this highly engineered project. The tree was so big stakes would not hold it up so they used 6 giant cement blocks to anchor it. The blocks were placed precisely with the crane. The blocks were even decorated as wrapped presents! The guy wires on the tree were strategically placed no doubt. The tree, a concolor, was the biggest tree ever for the Park donated by Groton Utilities.

Raising the tree with the crane and placing it in the giant tree stand, which was anchored to the ground with giant spikes, (giant seems to be the key word here) was no easy task. Who was that crane operating man? But these folks had it done even before I got tired of taking pictures.

Power Posse Productions was in charge of stringing the lights. The two lift buckets moved into action to straighten the star first, then started to string the lights. It was almost done but I had to leave at 5, it was dark and it was sprinkling. Not sure how long the Power Posse stayed. I'm assuming they finished up in the morning. OMG what a beautiful tree!

Grommet Wreaths

The grommet wreath makes a huge nautical statement. The large manila rope dating back to the early days of sailing ships.

I couldn't resist hanging the manila wreath on this mermaid during a photo session in Cuttyhunk. 

Keep your eyes open as you shop for bows or search online, there are so many out there!

Cotton Wreaths

The cotton wreaths, made with American cotton, are available in white, navy, and tan and used mostly indoors. The white is popular as a centerpiece for weddings.

Our wreaths average about 16" in diameter. Jill is stitching the frame on this manila wreath. Most of our wreaths can be fitted with this wire frame for extra support.

There are a few ways to hang a wreath. Jill has some ideas in her video below.

Olde Mistick Village

Late summer, the perfect time of year to visit vineyards and wineries. Bring a picnic, taste some wine and walk through the vines. These vineyards are close to Mystic with a short drive along the beautiful roads of Connecticut. Most have special events so check their website first to find out what is happening!

Jonathan Edwards Winery

Located just about 16–20 minutes from Mystic.

Described as “New England charm, Napa‑style” with a beautiful tasting room offering flights, outdoor seating, and regular events.

Saltwater Farm Vineyard

A coastal winery roughly 10 minutes from downtown Mystic in Stonington.

Features a restored WWII-era hangar turned tasting venue, with terrace views of marshland, plus live music and food trucks on occasion.

Stonington Vineyards

Established in 1987 and one of the founding members of the Connecticut Wine Trail.

Offers both indoor tasting rooms and outdoor patios ideal for picnics (BYO food encouraged), along with regular events.

Maugle Sierra Vineyards

Located just minutes north of Mystic in Ledyard.

Open year-round with some great tastings, featuring vineyard views and live music on select evenings/weekends.

Preston Ridge Vineyard

About 15 miles north of Mystic in Preston.

A 60-acre property offering a variety of wines, indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and special events like yoga with wine.

Kingdom of the Hawk

Fairly new, established in 2018 and located in North Stonington CT. It is the sister property of Saltwater Farm Vineyard. 

Amazing architecture and sprawling views of the vines, nearby forest and wildlife.

Lady Maryland is part of the Living Classrooms Foundation which focuses on hands on learning, health and wellness, community safety programs using urban, natural and maritime resources as living classrooms. Last week she visited Mystic and offered tours of the schooner to promote their programs which are based out of Baltimore and Washington D.C.

A Little About Her

"LADY MARYLAND is a pungy schooner, a vessel indigenous to the 19th century Chesapeake Bay. Between the 1830s and 1950s, pungies carried perishable cargo on the Bay. Pungies have a hull form similar to the famous Baltimore Clippers. This design makes them extremely fast and well suited for their original mission of carrying cargo. LADY MARYLAND was built in 1986 to provide students with a hands-on opportunity to sail an historic vessel and learn about the ecology, history and economics of the Bay and the waters off the north east coast of the United States. Last month ABC News Boston contacted us to see if we would like to do a feature news story for the station. An interview about Mystic Knotwork and it's founder, Matt's Grandfather, Alton Beaudoin. Matt and Jill said yes. It was a fun interview, Matt is blessed with the gift of gab so listening to his answers about his grandfather, the company and even Matt's history was informative. I have been here at the shop for 6 years and heard things I never knew!

Jill was equally articulate relating the history of how she came up with the idea of adding different colored sailor bracelets to the inventory. Working with the rope company to create custom colors for Mystic Knotwork.

Oh the stories we can tell. The history of the company is unique. The News media that have been through our doors over the years are always amazed and interested.

They came back from the event that was held last Thursday with quite a surprise story.

Well it turns out Matt and Jill, who were totally surprised, were invited up on stage, praises were presented by many, bringing Matt to tears, and there was a standing ovation! Totally unexpected, a great evening all around was celebrated with the 2025 award recipients too.

Did I mention, the week before the formal Covid shutdown, Mystic Knotwork was named 'Small Business of the Year' for Connecticut by the SBA?  I learned only a few months later that this is the highest small business honor we could get. The year was so full of energy, I didn't realize how 'prestigious' that award is.  What was to be an awards week in DC back in May turned into a Zoom meeting in September, but still, it's humbling to lead a team that earned that award.

Bluff Point State Park in nearby Groton is 778 acres of undeveloped land, a wooded peninsula that juts out into Long Island Sound. Combining coastal woodlands, beach and dune grasslands, coastal plain ponds, coastal bluff, tidal wetlands, intertidal mud flats, and offshore eelgrass beds. The Pequot Indians lived and thrived here around 1614 and must have had an abundance of fish and shellfish to eat.

Fishing, hiking, small boat ramp, swimming, biking, field trips, geology and birding. We hiked it a few weeks back, 3.45 miles of mostly large wide trails, great views and it was fun to learn about the history of the area. In 1975 it was designated a Coastal Reserve, "for the purpose of preserving its native ecological associations, unique faunal and floral characteristics, geological features, and scenic qualities in a condition of undisturbed integrity".

We saw hikers, mt. bikers, a school field trip, and joggers. There is a beautiful beach, historic Sunset Rock, and the stone foundation of Governor John Winthrop Jr.'s house from 1648. There are kiosks throughout noting the history and wildlife on the point. Wikipedia has an informative piece on Bluff Point State Park.

Last year we were contacted by Harry, the hotel manager, inquiring about purchasing some of our knots for each room. They have 31 rooms, of course we said yes! Our nautical navy bowl, navy bottle stopper and large white trivet can be found in each room for your use. Thank you Delamar!

The soft opening was the middle of March and I couldn't wait to get over there to tour the site and take some photos of this beauty situated right on the Mystic River! I believe all the rooms have a view of the water, even the lobby, and the La Plage Restaurant and Oyster Bar. The hotel has a nautical theme full of maritime history with a flair of elegance and style. The grand opening is May 14th.

The Delamar Mystic, part of the Delamar Hotel Group, created by Charles Mallory of Greenwich Ct. His famous entrepreneurial, seafaring relatives from over 200 years ago started a shipbuilding and shipping industry in Mystic that was passed on through the generations. Charles has channeled his love for hospitality combined with his love for the sea and his ancestor's maritime heritage into the Delamar Mystic. 

My hospitality experts, Jill and Alicia who gave me the tour, are pictured above. The oil painting behind them is of the Charles Mallory who arrived in Mystic as a young boy in 1816. It and the painting of his son, Charles Henry, in the lobby, were found by chance on online auctions and bought back by the family.

I had a love affair with all the light fixtures. In the grand lobby, the two chandeliers of deck prisms are amazing, an idea of Charles and built by a local artist, Gardner Murray. Historically glass prisms were set into the decks of ships to let light in down below. Some boats are still built with them today. Below, the painting of Charles Henry Mallory. He was a huge sailboat racing enthusiast during the 1850's, the heyday of the elite world of competitive yachting.

The colors of the Delamar, blues and greens, colors of the sea, are used throughout the hotel. Looking through the lobby, the bar is beyond and after that the restaurant.

Look at this porch, it runs the length of the building! Still receiving the finishing touches towards completion. Soon there will be an outdoor patio for dining, an outdoor bar and a dock where you can tie up your yacht or dinghy... dock and dine.

The rooms are so nice and comfortable with all the essentials you might need and big windows overlooking the river.

The Story of the Shamrock Pin

"There is a sweet, elderly gentleman, a local, and he's one of our biggest fans. He frequently comes in for a visit, chit chats, and occasionally buys something.

Last year, the day before St Paddy's Day, he came in. He was hoping for a shamrock lapel pin. No such product existed yet, but I got to thinking. I took his number and decided to brainstorm. I came up with a design.

The celtic heart knot is one of my favorites. I tried to do a four leaf clover with them, but the hearts are just a bit too wide for that. Three would have to do. He was thrilled and so was I.

My boss posted the picture of his smiling face wearing it and she got a bunch of comments asking to purchase one. Needless to say, I made a ton over the next couple weeks. I thought they would just be a seasonal project, but I've been making them all year long. Only, not in insane quantities until this past week.

It was almost the holiday so my boss let me know she was about to post them to our social media. At the moment, I was the only one who made them in the shop.

People started asking about ordering them immediately. My boss kept updating me to let me know how many were being ordered until I saw her a couple days later and she said she had 150 interested customers. 

Needless to say, I've made at least 300 of them in the last month and the orders keep coming. Luckily, I'm not the only one tying them now. "

Once the tree arrives in the Mystic River Park the holidays are in full swing in Mystic. The tree was actually from someone's yard in town. I saw them cutting it down when I drove into work! Santa arrived Sat. and is sporting an updated coat. He sewed our monkey fist ornaments onto his lapels! The festivities continued with the Marketplace on the west side of Cottrell St., shopping and treats. Visits with Santa, caroling and music. The tree lighting then the lighted boat parade.

Seasonal lights are glowing all around the Mystic area. The Olde Mistick Village Luminaria will be Dec. 8. Mystic Seaport also has holiday lights everywhere!

Don't forget to bring your letters to Santa and place them in the North Pole express mailbox located at the Mystic Drawbridge in front of Greater Mystic Chamber Visitor Center on East Main St. 

Earlier in the week Santa stopped in at the Santa Sleigh Station. The Taquerio, a street taco bar/restaurant that is now temporarily Santa's Sleigh Station. A festive eatery with a huge Holiday theme.

In the summer and often times throughout the year people on vacation have their dogs in tow. Both our shops in Mystic are dog friendly and we see a lot of pups. Our mascot, Betsy Mongrel, welcomes each pet by offering them a dog toy to play with. I have been here 5 years and everyone usually gets along!

If not too busy our knot tying artisans will whip out their camera phones and try to capture a shot of the pups in action. Not always easy as you may know but it's a fun time trying! Come visit with your dog or take some pictures of your friend at home with their new dog toy.

She was returning to Rhode Island after spending the winter in the Bahamas.The trip would be from Jacksonville Florida to Georgetown South Carolina. This would be like old times, as we grew up together in a sailing community, spending years on the water in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound and beyond.

We were approaching the marina in Charleston when an out of control cargo ship was sliding through the channel, similar to the ship pictured above. It was stuck in forward and going 17 knots. We just missed being in its path. The pilot did an incredible job of not hitting anything. The wake though did disrupt some docks and swamped a small boat at the harbor entrance. Phew!

Charleston is a big shipping port as well as a great historic town. Restaurants, museums and galleries. Learned a lot about the growing of rice back in the day and about the indigo industry.

The Vendue Downtown Art Hotel had a lobby filled with art!

 End of the day, this salty dog and his friends are heading back to their boat.

It was one of the first beautiful days of spring and I had to get out of the shop to search for blog material, right! Caught the Argia backing down off her dock and doing a 3 point turn in the river. Pretty cool to watch. You can sign up for daysails or short tours on this schooner.

Mystic River Park. These benches on the river are a well kept secret, so nice to sit here and take in the beauty year round and the boat traffic in the summer.

Mystic Knotwork. Our shop on Cottrell St., overlooks the park and the river. You will often see us running out the door when one of the famous large ships waits for the bridge to open. Or sitting on the porch in an Adirondack chair tying knots.

The Whaler's Inn, on the corner of Cottrell and East Main St., across the street from our other shop. The Inn is a true in-town hotel with a restaurant, The Farmer's Daughter. Very nice indeed.

Across the street, a bunch of shops, Lis Bakery and Schooner Wharf. Adventure Mystic rents kayaks and bikes here in the summer.

Street side shops of Holmes St., Adventure Mystic and right beyond, Karma Kitchen Mystic and Juicery, and yes deliciously fresh. Also a part of these unique shops, Mystic Nautical Marine Consignment, unique with its new boating and fishing gear, vintage, older items...it's like a museum! After that, my friend Chuck's shop, The Nantucket Trader Antiques and Collectibles. He is quite a collector!

Heading back towards the bridge the S&P Oyster Restaurant and Bar is on your right, you can't miss it! Fabulous outdoor patio, gardens and views of the bridge and river.

I was so happy to see the Sabino tied up at the dock outside the restaurant, photo op. Maybe guests were having lunch at the restaurant. The Sabino has just been refitted with a new diesel electric engine and is back doing tours of the river.

Crossing the bridge this famous building that houses the popular Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream Shop is getting some cosmetic work done.

West Main St. boasts one shop or restaurant after another. A good variety of shops and foods to choose from. Take it all the way to Water St., big book store on the left corner, on the right a gallery, brewery and a couple of side streets. Water St. has a handful of great eating spots!

Heading back towards the bridge, Mystic Sweets and Ice Cream Shop, a popular spot. They have coffee too and a large amount of nostalgic candies, chocolates, gifts and their own homemade ice cream!

The weights on the bridge are something to behold.

You guessed it, we are back on the boardwalk at the park. Public restrooms are here as well as a fudge shop, ice cream shop and a soup and salad take out shop. Warning the ice cream shop has fresh home made pretzels. I got one. Wow!

The most fun is taking pictures of the customers wearing their new bracelets, necklaces and pins and of course being entertained by the visiting dogs.
