Here's the hottest trends for baby names in 2012

One such trend is hero names. It used to be popular in the 70s, and now that trend is coming back, with names like Monroe, Gatsby and Lewis. There's also names that can be said or written in many ways, or which are close to other known names. For example, Isabella is very popular, so if you want to name your baby something similar, you could go with Arabella or Annabelle.

Another historical trend that keeps coming back are strong, powerful names, like Bear or Hawk. That could give some self confidence to the child while they're growing up, although a too obvious one might also make for a strange name.

Then there's the location based names, like West in Weston or Wesley. The starting letter of the name is also a good indicator, with A being the most popular letter of all, and includes names like Aria, Arthur, Archer and Axel.

Every year, consonants also seem to rotate, with J, K and L having been popular in the past. Now, it's M's turn, with names like Millie, Magnus and Micah.

To go along the power names, there's also adjective names as well, like Sunny, Royal, Brace and Noble, although again they could be a bit obvious and not that well received. Then, there's those names that seem to keep coming back, like Betty, something your grand-mother may have used, is back into the popular light.

For men, the name Arlo seems to be one that also keeps coming back. As for middle names, short, 3 letter names are getting trendy, with names like Bee, Lee and May. A lot of names also end with Ley, like Kinley, Finley and Huxley. Others end with ie, like Addie and Nellie. In both cases, these word endings are often chosen because of how they sound, and make the overall name be much more popular amongst other parents.

Overall, there's no sure fire way to select a name. It needs to be something that will fit the baby well, but it's hard to say what that will be until he or she is born. So instead, go with what pleases you. Trends can be a great source of inspiration, but in the end you're the ones that get to decide what the right name is for your own baby, and thanks to names becoming popular over and over again, there's no real bad choices, just some better ones. Once you selected your name, make sure to ask around to get some opinions, and make sure it's something kids of today will like to have as their own names.

Music Facilitates Childhood Development (Research)

Personalized kids' music is widely believed to have many benefits for children beyond those within the realm of music itself.

Researchers asked whether music training improved reading performance in first grade children. After training, the music group exhibited significantly higher reading scores than did the control group, scoring in the 88th percentile versus the 72nd percentile. Incidentally, the benefits for the music group were not due to better teaching of reading because students who had the same teacher before, during and after music training showed greatly improved reading performance.

Moreover, continued music training was beneficial. After an additional year of music training, the experimental group was still superior to the control group. These findings clearly support the view that music education facilitates the ability to read.

Second, how could music training possibly improve reading? The music group did not learn to read music but rather to listen, and recognize musical ideas and concepts. To understand how music education might benefit reading, we need a brief review of how children usually learn to read after they can understand a language. It seems that music facilitates reading by improving the second, phonemic stage.

The relationship to music education is straightforward because such training invariably involves improvement in pitch discrimination. Therefore, the findings of researchers that music training facilitates learning to read can be understood as being mediated by enhanced pitch discrimination.

We next consider the effects of training with music on learning and creativity. After twenty days of training, all experimental groups exhibited higher test scores than the control group. The combined music and dance group showed the greatest improvement in both learning about body parts and tests of creativity.

After four months, the music group was superior to the control group on the test of spatial abilities but not on other tests of intelligence. In summary, the review support the conclusion that musical training and personalized music for kids facilitates cognitive skills, including reading, abstract spatial abilities and creativity in children, indigo kids, teenagers and adults.

The stork is about to present a wonderful bundle of joy, due to arrive in the next few months. The little bambino/a is certainly worthy of a celebration and holding a baby shower for an expectant mother is a memorable way to welcome the addition of the little one. Baby showers, as fun as they are to attend and host, nonetheless require planning, and a bit of creativity and imagination. If you are the host, themes, decorations, games, food and gift ideas should be among the many topics on your party planning checklist.

THEMES

The most obvious shower theme will be the tiny tot and mom. But selecting a decorative theme streamlines the decor and games, and helps guests select appropriate gifts.
Common baby shower themes include nursery rhymes, Old MacDonald's Farm animals, or Baby Firsts. If the mother is having twins, consider a Noah's Ark theme, which centers around pairs. If the baby's sex is known, try a "Little Prince" or "Little Princess" fairy tale theme.
If the mother has not yet selected a name, the theme can be "helping the mother select a name." For a stressed out mother, center your shower around "pampering the mom." Theme ideas are countless, so select a theme that best represents the personality of the mother.

GAMES

No shower is complete without games and there are lots of different types. Races, and guessing games tend to be the most engaging.

HOW BIG IS THE BELLY?-Guests can guess the age of the mother in a specific baby picture, or the circumferance of the mother's belly.

THE POOPY DIAPER-Lay a diaper on each guest's chair. At the end of the shower, the guest at each table with the poop-filled diaper (chocolate smeared in the diaper's inside), takes home the centerpiece.

WHAT WAS IN THE DIAPER BAG?-Test everyone's memory by briefly showing items in a diaper bag, and have guests name the items they just saw. You can divide your guests into teams and challenge them to dress a plastic doll in baby clothes, beginning with the diaper, and ending with the blanket.

DRESS THE BABY-Divide your guests into teams and have one member of each table dress a large, baby size doll, beginning with the diaper and ending with the blanket. The fastest dresser wins.
