New episodes section not working

Hi there,

For some reason or other my new episodes section isn't working anymore. When I go into it now to see what new episodes I've added it keeps on returning an sql error and when I exit out of the message it shows all of the episodes from whatever last show I was watching.

Anyone have any ideas?

So with Windows 8 arriving in the not too distant future, and the news that Windows 8 MC will be a paid for extra application, what are the chances of a Windows 8 Metro myTV?

I think that without the media centre restrictions and the nice tile interface of Windows 8 we could have an amazing myTV, myDVD apps, and with the hope of these being used for the new Xbox should it follow the same design as Windows 8?

What do other people think, and Arne do you see this as an opportunity to really make myTV as good as we all knew it could be without the limitations media center had.

Just think myTV with the kinect......

I received an email today from hostmonster saying that I have until Feb 18 to move the site from their servers. Even though they list their bandwidth and storage at limits that we'd never touch, apparently we're violating their TOS in some unknown manner. They also sent another email at the same time as the first... this one says that the account has been suspended due to TOS violations. Basically, hostmonster is screwing us over.

So, there's some money from donations that I can apply to non-shared hosting, but it's only going to last a month or two. I may also be able to talk to my boss again about hosting it on my work server, but I'm not sure how that'll go over considering it was interfering with production sites and that's what forced us to move it.

So I need feedback on how I should handle this. I either need to find an extremely inexpensive shared host ASAP or the site won't go back up. To complicate things, I'm really busy with the baby and I honestly don't have time to deal with this, but I'll make an effort to do whatever is necessary to get the site back up.

For reference, we're around $150 in the donation pool right now and the cheapest dedicated hosting I've found is around $50/month. That's 3 months of uptime before the site would come back down. Ideas?

If this turns out to be a long term problem (like it has been with movie-xml.com) I will rewrite the backend DAL of myTV and setup a database here.

Additional specials in TV series folders

As there doesn't seem to be any likelihood of an update to myTV anytime soon, I wonder if there is anything I can do to solve one of my issues with myTV.

I currently have lots of video files (basically DVD extras) in the same folder as the series itself. These files are not held within the TVDB.

They are all picked up fine in myTV but as soon as I watch one of these specials, myTV flags all the specials as having been watched rather than just the one I have seen.

Obviously when you have dozens of these files it is very irritating not to be able to identify what you have seen which you can do for normal episodes.

Is there anything I can do to get round this issue?

Automatic sorting of recorded TV

I'm a new myTV user, purchased it this week, really pretty happy with it so far although I haven't had a chance to use it much yet, I'm still loading it up. As I've been tediously re-ripping my TV DVD's into episodes rather than the ISO's I've been using in MyMovies, I was not looking forward to having to rename all of the dvr-ms files in my recorded Tv directory.

So today I wrote a program to automatically go through, query the thetvdb.com database for the necessary information, rename the files, and put them into my "saved shows" directory where I store my files for myTV. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until just now that dgaust has written a service to do much the same, so it looks like there will be a new option for this :)

It is a command line program now, the usage is:

Usage: MCEZ Sort

(all command line options have been moved to the ConfigInfo.xml file)

It will search your recorded tv directory, try to determine the season and episode of each show based on its metadata, and rename/move the file to your saved tv directory. So for example, it found "d:\recorded tv\Two and a Half Men_WJZY_2008_11_10_19_30_02.dvr-ms" on my system, determined that it was season 5, episode 4, and moved it to "d:\saved tv\Two and a Half Men\Season 05\Two and a Half Men.S05E04.City of Great Racks.dvr-ms".

There are currently some limitations I will work to get rid of:

1. Will only work with one output (saved shows) directory. I imagine some people may have collections that span multiple directories and this won't necessarily work well in that environment (yet). Update, multiple directories can be configured manually in the SeriesInfo.xml file.

2. Matches on the first matching series in thetvdb.com's system. So for example, I had a Life On Mars episode, and I guess that is originally a UK show, so the proper name for the series in thetvdb.com is "Life On Mars (US)". Right now it will match on the UK version "Life On Mars". In my case it didn't match the other criteria so it didn't find a season/episode and just left the file for manual handling but in some cases it may wrongly match up and move the file. Update, the correct series id can be configured manually in the the SeriesInfo.xml file.

3. The renaming convention is fixed, it puts it into a subfolder "Name of Show" in your saved tv directory, and then puts it into a subfolder "Season XX" in there. The file will be named "Name of Show.SXXEXX.Name of Episode.dvr-ms". Update, naming is completely configurable as described in a later post and in ConfigInfo.xml.

The program also has a schedule culler. It will look through X days of your future scheduled recordings and if it finds there are reruns scheduled that you already have archived, it will cancel the recording. This will free up your tuners if you are trying to complete your collection of a series and it keeps recording the episodes you already have. For example, I am trying to collect all episodes of Family Guy. Reruns air like 10 times a day on different channels, but I only need a few episodes to complete my collection so I really only need like 1% of what is being recorded for the series. The culler will go through and cancel all the recordings for episodes I already have and free up my tuners.

Short term improvements will include the following, please provide feedback if you are interested in this tool.

1. Flexible renaming criteria. I am interested in knowing how people name their files so that I can make it flexible enough for everyone to use. Done

2. Allow it to span multiple output directories. Done via manual configuration

3. Provide a config file to store parameters. Done

4. Provide a user interface to resolve conflicts.

5. Provide a service that will run automatically.

6. Look for existing folders with the series information to further reduce the number of queries to thetvdb.com

7. Add support for WTV files for those with TV Pack. Done

8. Allow you to tell it to skip certain series, or to only move certain shows. Done

Anyways, that's all for tonight. If you are interested in testing with the current version and can live with the limitations, feel free. You can also set up test directories if you don't want to mess with your real files. You can also use the "-c" option to copy the files to the new directory instead of move them, but as you probably know, copying these files can take a lot of time.

I am getting arithmetic overflow errors because two shows that are locked on the series level on TheTVDB have incorrect Air Time values. The show Freaks and Geeks has a military time value, whereas the show Head Case has the time listed as "11.00" instead of 11:00.

Both these shows have been locked by moderators so I cannot edit their values.

Is anyone here a moderator by any chance? If not, I would make a request on TheTVDB forum, but their forum registration is currently closed. Does anyone at least have an active forum account they'd let me use or something so I could at least make a request for a mod to make the changes? Those two values are preventing the "New Episodes" button on the MyTV strip from working properly.

Need the basic client install steps - AKA Help A Noob

OK, so I just bought the 5 pack (unfortunately before I noticed that the last product version was two years old, but fingers crossed). I've got it installed and shows added on my server machine, so far, so good.

Now, I want to install it on my desktop too, accessing the server's DB, and I can't find even the basic steps. Lots of threads with what appear to be firewall problems, etc, but no, "Here's how"....

I've installed SQL Server client on my desktop machine, then I installed myTV, deselecting the options for the server. The myTV shows up in media center, but when I try to use it, I get an error that it couldn't start the myTV service.

Any pointers?

Clean myTV Database service

A service that will match the contents of your myTV database against files which exist on your hardrive. If it finds files that no longer exist, but remain in the database, the service will remove the file from the database (as long as the base directory still exists).

I wrote this, as I have a number of shows where I will delete episodes every month or so as they aren't ones I want to archive (ie. The Daily Show, Colbert Report) and the file watcher service of myTV gets confused when large numbers of file are deleted at once (which is a known issue with the File Watcher API from Microsoft).

This service will run every 30 minutes and clean as required. For it to run, you need to setup the service to run as the same user as the mytv service, and when installing you must put the .\ in front of your user name. Once installed, run the setup application (a shortcut will be created on your desktop) and enter the details of the SQL server and Database.

The service will automatically start the next time you restart your PC - or to start immediately, you can go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services and select the service CleanmyTVDatabase.

SQL Error when loading new episodes

When I go to load the new episodes screen I get a SQL error. It is:

Problem loading ‘New Episodes’

Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string.

Not sure what to look at to narrow down where the problem is.

I have a show "Star Trek Voyager" Great. Except by accident, it was added to the DB as Star Trek TNG. Which now show sup TWICE in my list. I have tried vigilantly to change this, but I do not want to change the folder name and force it to reconnect. I can't find away otherwise though to delete the error and have it re-detect the damn folder..

Look, I loved this product.. but it's 2 years since it really updated, basically, support is non-existant and it isn't adding any new features. That's fine; I was still glad to support it when it was alive.

But if you're going to keep the website up, watch out for the damn spammers. I've received 12 spam emails from this board offering crap like Tiffany Watches to Trips to whatever.. and they all come through the IP's held here and stay posted in the forums as responses. Basically, since the board also was never upgraded, it's an easy spam target.

Fix it. I'll just change my email address in my profile to something non-existant for now.

After adding folders, there are missing series/episodes.

I have approximately 2200 dvr-ms files, organized in folders by series. After going through the found new folder exercise for all of them that I was prompted on by myTV, Settings->Database shows around 63 series with about 1400 total episodes.

I haven't been able to figure out why so many things are missing, is there a log file with info about this somewhere?

Any ideas/suggestions?

I know in the future there was supposed to be a feature that allowed us to create/edit the details of TV Shows instead of being forced to follow the metadata (that is sometimes "Locked" incorrectly on TheTVDB). I remember even fooling around with an XML Editor program that let you change the banners and pick a local file and stuff, but the feature wasn't fully implemented. Am I safe in assuming that this feature will likely not come to fruition?

Install problem using SQL 2008 Express

Hi

I have installed myTv a few times before without any problems but I always used to install it alongside MyMovies sharing the same SQL 2005 DB.
After building myself a new HTPC I have decided to install MyTV using SQL 2008 as recommended and having MyMovies on its own SQL 2005 DB

I have installed SQL 2008 Express according to the downloadable word document on this site but when trying to install MyTV from an elevated command promt I get -
Error -2147217900: failed to create SQL database: myTV, error detail: CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'..
If I ok that I then get -
Error -2147217865: failed to drop SQL database: myTV, error detail: Cannot drop the database 'myTV', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.. coming up

MyMovies or SQL2005 are not currently installed on the PC.

Am I missing something here?

myTV not picking up some TV episodes

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue before? Just recently when I add tv episodes to my watched folders, mytv doesn't seem to be picking them up.

For example, I've added 2 new episodes of Grey's Anatomy but they haven't shown up, I have to watch them through windows explorer and not through media center. However, other new episodes that I add get picked up.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Getting myTV to resume videos

I just started writing a alternative player for myTV that would remember the position of a video when you hit pause or stop, and then automatically resume from that point the next time you watch it. If anybody is interested in this functionality then I'd be happy to post it, though I'd warn its still in a very alpha state. It currently has trouble on a Linksys extender, though an XBox seems to work.

If anybody has any interest let me know. I have no interest in replacing myTV, I just really wanted this resume functionality.
