Sales of its aging phones have lagged, especially in the vital U.S. market and Latin America, while Apple and Google have powered on.

"It's not so much any individual product that's going to change investors' perception of the stock. It's going to take an upgrade of the entire product portfolio with the operating system upgrades," Evercore Partners analyst Alkesh Shah said after Monday's announcement.

RIM's U.S. shares dipped 0.37 pct to $48.47 in early trade after plunging more than 14 percent on Friday on the profit warning.

The new Bold, the model most geared toward the business market, has a 2.8-inch screen and retains the company's trademark physical qwerty keyboard with a 1.2 GHz processor. It will ship with a near-field communication (NFC) chip, allowing the phone to be used as a mobile wallet, executives said at the annual BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida.

The Canadian company also launched a video chat application for its new PlayBook tablet computer and said it would buy device management company Ubitexx.

In a move designed to capitalize on the BlackBerry's enhanced security features, the company said it will offer to host Apple and Android devices on its secure BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

RIM also launched BlackBerry Balance, a program to allow corporate and personal data to coexist without compromising confidential communication.

For years, businesses and government agencies have given the BlackBerry to millions of workers in need of mobile access to workplace applications. But many now prefer using their own Apple iPhones and iPads, as well and a slew of devices running on Google's Android platform.

While defending its realm in the professional market, RIM is pushing hard to deepen its inroads in consumer markets. But it has struggled to catch the eye of the most discerning shopper, though it has made strides in grabbing market share in emerging markets, mostly with cheaper handsets.

Hirai asked all users to change their passwords.

Hirai reiterated what the company said last week -- that even though it had no direct evidence the data were even taken, it cannot rule out the possibility.

He said data from 10 million credit cards were believed to be involved, and that Sony still does not know whether information was stolen.

Sony has added software monitoring and enhanced data protection and encryption as new security measures, he said. The company said it would offer "welcome back" freebies such as complimentary downloads and 30 days of free service around the world to show remorse and appreciation.

The network, which serves both the PlayStation video game machines and Sony's Qriocity movie and music services, has been shut down since April 20. The switches, known as transistors, have typically been flat. By adding a third dimension -- "fins" that jut up from the base -- Intel will be able to make the transistors and chips smaller. Think of how skyscrapers address the need for more office space when land is scarce.

The company said the new structure will let chips run on less power. That gives Intel its best shot yet at cracking the growing markets for chips used in smartphones and tablet computers. Intel has been weak there because its current chips use too much power.

Chips with the 3-D transistors will be in full production this year and appear in computers in 2012.

Intel has been talking about 3-D, or "tri-gate," transistors for nearly a decade, and other companies are experimenting with similar technology. The announcement is noteworthy because Intel has figured out how to manufacture the transistors cheaply in mass quantities.

Transistors are at the center of the digital universe. They're the workhorses of modern electronics, tiny on/off switches that regulate electric current. They're to computers what synapses are to the human nervous system.

Transistors operate in the shadows, but they're integral to daily life. And they need to shrink, so that computers can get smaller and smarter.

A chip can have a billion transistors, all laid out side by side in a single layer, as if they were the streets of a city. Chips have no "depth" -- until now. On Intel's chips, the fins will jut up from that streetscape, sort of like bridges or overpasses.

However, Intel's advance doesn't mean it can add a whole second layer of transistors to the chip, or start stacking layers into a cube. That remains a distant but hotly pursued goal of the industry, as cubic chips could be much faster that flat ones while consuming less power.

The demand is there for smartphones that deliver the Internet in our pockets, supercomputers that beat human champions at "Jeopardy!," and other feats of computer wizardry that would have been impossible in the 1970s. Processors then could only hold several thousand transistors. Today they hold billions.

The latest change isn't something that consumers will be able to see because it happens at a microscopic level. But analysts call it one of the most significant shifts in silicon transistor design since the integrated circuit was invented more than half a century ago.

"When I looked at it, I did a big, `Wow.' What we've seen for decades now have been evolutionary changes to the technology. This is definitely a revolutionary change," said Dan Hutcheson, a longtime semiconductor industry watcher and CEO of VLSI Research Inc., who was briefed ahead of time on Intel's announcement.

For consumers, the fact that Intel's transistors will have a third dimension means that they can expect a continuation of Moore's Law. The famous axiom, pronounced in 1965 by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, has guided the computer industry's efforts and given us decade after decade of cheaper and more powerful computers.

The core of Moore's prediction is that computer performance will double every two years as the number of transistors on the chips roughly doubles as well. The progress has been threatened as transistors have been shrunken down to absurd proportions, and engineers have confronted physical limitations on how much smaller they can go. Controlling power leakage is a central concern.

For Intel, which is based in Santa Clara, Calif., the change is a reminder of its leadership in advanced semiconductor technology and its incentive to keep Moore's Law alive.

Previous major changes have focused on new materials that can be used for transistors, not entire redesigns of the transistors themselves.

"People have been trying to avoid changing the structure," Hutcheson said.

Other semiconductor companies argue that there's still life to be squeezed from the current design of transistors. Hutcheson agrees, but said Intel's approach should allow it to advance at least a generation ahead of its rivals, which include IBM Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The reduced power consumption addresses a key need for Intel.

The performance expectations and power requirements for PCs are much higher than they are for phones and tablet computers, so Intel's dominance in PC chips doesn't necessarily lead to success in mobile devices. Even Intel's Atom-based chips, which are designed for mobile devices, have been criticized as too power hungry.

The new technology will be used for Intel's PC chips and its Atom line.

Technological leadership alone won't guarantee success, however, as Intel has learned in repeated attempts at cracking the mobile market.

Other chip makers such as Qualcomm Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc. have entrenched partnerships with cellphone makers, and there is suspicion about the performance of Intel's chips in mobile devices.

"When it comes to the mobile market, they have their work cut out for them," Hutcheson said of Intel. But "this gives you the transistors to build the next great system."

An Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong was not available for comment.

The iPhone is one of Apple's most successful products, with more than 16 million sold in the last quarter of 2010 and the product accounted for more than a third of the company's sales in the quarter.

The current iPhone 4 was launched by Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs in June last year and began shipping the same month in 2010.

Apple sources many of its components from Taiwan-based suppliers, many of whom are expected to benefit from an uptick in sales as some of them rely on the U.S. company for about 20-40 percent of their business, said Vincent Chen, an analyst at Yuanta Securities.

"For some suppliers, Apple is their cash cow, or their bread and butter," Chen said.
"With all these versions being launched so frequently, it will be the so-called low-margin suppliers, such as those that assemble the phones, who will benefit the most."
Suppliers to the new iPhone include camera module maker Largan Precision Co Ltd, touchscreen panel maker Wintek Corp and case maker Foxconn Technology Co Ltd, two of the people said.

The companies would begin production either in July or August before shipping components to Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, flagship of Foxconn Technology Group, for assembly, they said.

Officials at Largan, Wintek and Foxconn declined to comment.

On Wednesday, Largan's Taipei-listed shares ended up 3.7 percent, Hon Hai rose 4.3 percent and Foxconn rose 6.6 percent, outpacing the benchmark TAIEX share index's 2 percent advance.

Apple, a big purchaser of touchscreen displays and flash memory, is also dependent on Japan for some of its key components, sparking concern that the disruption due to the crisis there may hurt its gross margins.

Apple is expected to report another spectacular quarter on Wednesday, tempered by growing caution over how supply constraints will squeeze margins and restrain iPhone and iPad sales.

And that, said Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, who uncovered the file, poses serious problems.

"It became clear that there was a scary amount of detail on our movements [in the iPhone]," they noted in a post on their website.

"By passively logging your location without your permission, Apple has made it possible for anyone from a jealous spouse to a private investigator to get a detailed picture of your movements."

Apple did not respond to calls or e-mails for comment from FoxNews.com.

The two British programmers accidentally discovered the iPhone feature -- some would call it a bug -- when they were making software based on user locations. And digital privacy consultant Frank M. Ahearn says he has seen the problems caused by such lack of privacy first-hand.

"It's a scary world," Ahearn told FoxNews.com. "I've worked with clients where, for instance, a woman started realizing that her husband knew lots things he just shouldn't have known … eventually we figured out that he could tell where she was based on her phone's GPS."

Not all cell phones track the same information, though the exact details of what's being tracked are unclear. Microsoft told tech bloggers at Gizmodo that only the last location is stored on Windows Phone 7-powered devices, to support the Find My Phone feature. Google refused to tell whether Android-powered smartphones store location information in a similar fashion -- though Android phones do allow a user to opt out of location collection.

Who would use such information? Employers are starting to trace employees using company-issued cell phones, Ahearn said. It was not clear why Apple was recording the information or how the company would use it, if at all.

But the iPhone feature could be good news for police. According to the ACLU, Michigan police are currently using a device called the Cellebrite UFED during traffic pull-overs. It can grab all the data out of a phone within minutes.

The company that sells the Cellebrite UFED advertises it to law enforcement: "Get the evidence you need -- immediately."

The company's website goes on to note: "Easy to use in both the field and in lab environments, UFED extracts vital data such as phonebook, pictures, videos, text messages, call logs … it then gathers the data into reports for research and evidence."

But the ACLU argues that the use of the device by police officers during traffic stops would be illegal, and is attempting to obtain Internal records on exactly how the department uses the devices.

"[The devices] allow them to extract information from cell phones without a warrant," Kary Moss, Executive Director of the Michigan ACLU, said.

"The U.S. Constitution acknowledges that people who are not suspected of a certain crime have certain rights -- police have to obtain a search warrant."

A spokesman for the Michigan State Police said that they were drafting a statement on their use of the devices, but it was not ready by Wednesday evening.

But to the matter at hand: What can you do if you want to ensure your data is safe?
Ahearn says the simplest method is just not to use a fancy phone. As of now there is no known way to stop an iPhone with OS 4 from logging locations.

But the Michigan branch of the ACLU disagrees, fearing that cops are abusing the device -- even using it on routine arrests and traffic stops.

"We believe that [the police] are using new devices that allow them to extract information from cell phones without a warrant, and using them during routine traffic stops," Kary Moss, executive director of the Michigan ACLU, told FoxNews.com.

Michigan State Police spokesman Tiffany Brown told FoxNews.com Thursday that the devices are only used to gather evidence for serious cases such as crimes against children -- and that it has never been the department's policy to use the device during routine traffic stops.

But Brown declined to say whether the device has ever been used in traffic stops, saying instead that there have been no citizen complaints or lawsuits.

"The [department] only uses the device if a search warrant is obtained or with consent," Brown added.

To test that, the ACLU submitted a Freedom of Information Act request, demanding police records on how the devices were used, following nearly three years of questions over UFED devices. The police department initially replied that it would cost $500,000 to comb through the records and pick out the relevant ones. The ACLU, which would have to pay the tab, balked at the amount.

The police department says it is doing its best to cooperate with the request.
"The [department] has worked with the ACLU to narrow the focus, and thus reduce the cost, of its initial Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request," the department noted in a statement released Thursday. The statement reaffirms the department's claims that no one has complained about its use of the Cellebrite gadget.

"To be clear, there have not been any allegations of wrongdoing by the MSP in the use of DEDs," it reads.

ALCU Attorney Mark Fancher, who filed an official letter of complaint with the agency on April 13, said he'll believe it when he sees it.

"We continue to have great difficulty getting those documents," he told FoxNews.com.
The State Police, meanwhile, have accused the ACLU of getting in the way of its main job: solving crimes.

"The implication by the ACLU that the [department] uses these devices "quietly to bypass Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches" is untrue, and this divisive tactic unjustly harms police and community relations," the statement reads.

"[The devices] have become a powerful investigative tool used to obtain critical information from criminals," the statement says.

These databases could help them tap the $2.9 billion market for location-based services—expected to rise to $8.3 billion in 2014, according to research firm Gartner Inc.

In the case of Google, according to new research by security analyst Samy Kamkar, an HTC Android phone collected its location every few seconds and transmitted the data to Google at least several times an hour. It also transmitted the name, location and signal strength of any nearby Wi-Fi networks, as well as a unique phone identifier.
Google declined to comment on the findings.

Until last year, Google was collecting similar Wi-Fi data with its fleet of StreetView cars that map and photograph streets world-wide. The company shut down its StreetView Wi-Fi collection last year after it inadvertently collected e-mail addresses, passwords and other personal information from Wi-Fi networks. The data that Mr. Kamkar observed being transmitted on Android phones didn't include such personal information.

Apple, meanwhile, says it "intermittently" collects location data, including GPS coordinates, of many iPhone users and nearby Wi-Fi networks and transmits that data to itself every 12 hours, according to a letter the company sent to U.S. Reps. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) last year.
Apple didn't respond to requests for comment.

That's the initial takeaway from the company's much-anticipated tablet device, the PlayBook, which drew far more jeers than cheers in its debut yesterday. Analysts said RIM, whose shares dropped more than 3 percent after the poor reviews, will have to quickly up its game if it hopes to compete in the hot tablet market dominated by Apple's iPad.

"No one is going to confuse this [PlayBook] with the iPad," said Daniel Ernst, a tech analyst at Hudson Square Research.

According to reviewers, one of the most glaring shortcomings is the PlayBook doesn't have an independent function for email, calendars, or address books. Instead, users are forced to connect, or "tether," their existing BlackBerrys to the device for access to email and the Internet.

Reviewers also panned the PlayBook's dearth of apps -- about 3,000 compared to more than 300,000 for its competitors.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company said it plans on making software upgrades to the tablet by the summer.

"The reality is it needs more work. The question is, do they have time to do this?" said Richard Tse, analyst at Cormark Securities.

RIM is hoping to sell as many as 9 million or 10 million PlayBook units over the next 10 months, according to sources, while consensus estimates for sales of the device are in the 3 million ballpark.

But some analysts said that reviewers are missing the point. The PlayBook was designed first and foremost to first target existing BlackBerry users. The tablet is also a platform for RIM's new QNX operating system, which is slated to be transitioned into all RIM devices.

"This is not a perfect product, but it's a good start," said Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton.

Brace yourself: Work on Windows 8 is well under way. A pre-release version of Microsoft's next operating system -- which isn't officially scheduled to launch until 2012 -- reportedly leaked onto the Internet over the weekend, leading to an explosion of speculation among Microsoft watchers about what new versions and features the company may be developing.

Chief among the features pinpointed is the widespread implementation of the Ribbon interface, a dynamic, icon-filled replacement for traditional menus unveiled with Microsoft Office 2007. Though controversial, the interface garnered rave reviews and became a love-it-or-leave-it reason to upgrade to the latest productivity suite.

The leaked Windows 8 screenshots suggest Microsoft intends to add the Ribbon interface to the basic operating system itself, wrote enthusiasts Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott.

"In Windows 8, Ribbon usage is accelerating again, and Microsoft’s next major OS will include this UI in the most visible of all possible places, Windows Explorer," the pair blogged on the site Within Windows. They called the new interface "only half-finished and, frankly, of dubious value," arguing that the inconsistent implementation of the new look and feel suggest it is controversial within Microsoft, as well.

Other notable features include a sync functionality built into the operating system and new logon and user switching functions, enthusiasts wrote. But the biggest change will be under the hood; Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced in January that the next version of the operating system will support the chips that power cell phones and tablets, not just the traditional Intel and AMD chips that power computers.

"Whatever device you use, now or in the future, Windows will be there," Ballmer said.

A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company would not comment on future versions of Windows.

Analysts expect the company will add additional functionality to make the Windows 8 operating system ideal for the growing fleet of tablet computers, including instant-on capability and a Windows app store. But a separate version of the OS specifically designed for tablets may lag behind the standard version, said Trip Chowdry, analyst at Global Equities Research.

"Windows 8 could be available as soon as this holiday season, but Microsoft won't be able to get its ARM version out that quickly," Chowdry told Money magazine.

Microsoft has pledged to keep to its three-year operating system release cycle. Windows 7 was unveiled in October 2009, while Vista was released in 2006.

And it'll know where it is, which buildings it's passing and which cars are near it on the road.

So wave hello to the robot car of the future -- it may just know you're saying hi, after all.

One of the most interesting examples of this is the BMW ConceptVision Connected Drive. The sportscar, which made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show this month, uses a unique color scheme to feed information to the driver: blue for entertainment choices, red for safety concerns.

The BMW ConceptVision provides a way to interact with the cars’ surroundings too. For example, if you’re driving through New Orleans and pass a café, you can find it’s current music playlist and add it to your own in-car entertainment system.

Thilo Koslowski, the vice president of automotive research at Gartner, called this kind of location-awareness the latest auto tech trend. The car senses where you are at all times, knows your music and movie preferences, and can interact with other cars on the roadway.

“Cars are becoming smarter and communicating intelligently with the outside world,” he told FoxNews.com. Over the next ten years, he said, cars will “crowd source” information from other drivers as they pass your vehicle, learning where the best restaurants are located and the best traffic routes. The car will become an information hub: ordering movie tickets for you and even making dinner reservations.
“Cars will become the ultimate mobile device,” he said. “And even more so because they truly are mobile. Making information more accessible to the driver has become a new automotive focus.”

Safety improvements

Koslowski said drivers want more information as they drive. Yet, an even greater impetus behind future car tech has to do with safety. Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have developed new technologies that can sense an imminent collision and hit the brakes automatically. The Volvo S60 can detect a passing pedestrian and flash a warning light before braking.

Paul Laurenza, an attorney at Dykema who studies automotive technology, said a new DOT estimate finds that 81% of vehicle collisions could be avoided using new collision avoidance technology. (The estimate is based on data when there is no impaired driver involved, however.)

This has prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate new safety measures, such as rear-view back-up cameras, and make them mandatory in new cars.

Laurenza said NHTSA will decide by 2013 whether to regulate new vehicle-to-vehicle safety warning technologies for collision avoidance. These technologies may make their way into new cars by the end of this decade. Of course, some automakers, such as Audi and BMW, will sometimes introduce the new technologies long before they are mandated.

“We should continue on the path of having vehicles that use these sophisticated systems to assist the driver and, if necessary, correct for potential collisions where the driver is either distracted or inattentive,” said Laurenza, who insists the safety measures are not a replacement for inattentive drivers but an add-on to make them even more attentive to the roadway.

Self-driving cars

That said, one of the loftiest goals of automotive technology is to make cars drive themselves. Google recently developed a program using Toyota Priuses that let cars drive on California roadways with little driver input. The reason this autonomous driving makes sense, Koslowski said, is that a computer can react much faster than a human, communicating with other cars and the roadway itself.

One car company that is paving the way for autonomous driving is Volvo. Dr. Erik Coelingh is a technical lead for safety and based in Sweden. Coelingh developed a “platooning” technology where one lead car, driven by a human, feeds data back to other driverless cars in a train.

“If something unexpected happens on the road, such as construction or a deer in the road, the human driver will brake and send commands back to the other cars,” Coelingh said.

Koslowski said autonomous driving will help save on fuel economy because a computer can drive more efficiently. He said one interesting challenge will be to outfit cars with more wireless connections (maybe even one per passenger), more entertainment options, and more conveniences.

Still, Koslowski said the future car could also pose some new challenges in distracted driving. He said automakers should resist the temptation to add even more entertainment options and focus instead on helping the driver stay attuned to the road -- and not to text with other drivers.

Unfortunately there's no great way to find it all. You can rely on your social networks but that means you'll have to wait and see what other people are posting. You can continuously watch what's popular on YouTube but you'll have to sift through a lot of nonsense before you find something that you'd want to return to week after week.

I've been waiting for a good TV Guide for the web for a long time, but so far, nothing exists. You have to know what you're looking for in order to find it. Here are some ways I find new and original content.

Podcasts: A podcast is an audio or video show that you can download to your mobile device or your computer. They became popular through iTunes but now people listen to them on their computers, through programs like Stitcher.

As the name suggests, Stitcher stitches shows together. You find shows that you're interested in, about golf or news or your favorite TV show or whatever, and subscribe to them (for free, of course). When a new show arrives, you open your account, click your favorites folder, and listen away. Stitcher works great on your computer, iPad, or any smartphone.

Podcasts are great for anyone who's not a professional broadcaster but has something interesting to say. I admit that I listen to at least an hour and a half of them every day. It's stuff that I've self selected for me, a little paranormal news, a dash of politics, some parenting, some technology, all different shows. It's like I've personalized my own radio channel.

Newscasts: If you've missed part of your favorite news broadcast you can usually find the major network news shows published for free on iTunes, Stitcher, and others. That way you can listen to Fox News Sunday while you're walking the dog.
Live Shows: There typically haven't been many live events on the web -- but that's changing too. Fox News Live is one example of original live programming for the web -- it's a great way to watch Fox News without a cable box and a television set. Facebook and Google have been getting into live events as well, a trend that's only going to grow.

Academics talk about how the web replicates the same patterns as other mediums, so there are just a few successful networks -- but the average guy doesn't really have much of a voice. I think this is because the average guy's shows are still a little too hard to find.

I challenge you try something new. Go out there today and listen to your first podcast. It doesn't matter if you're a NASCAR fan or a fisherman, you'll find dozens of shows to add to your routine. And at the risk of being slightly self promotional, I've got a few of my own that I think are pretty interesting too.
