We can no longer expect to return to the way it was before. That day will never come, which means if we are to survive, we must continue to be willing to learn new ways of working to accomplish our goals. To that end, I always encourage my staff to take advantage of training and self development opportunities so that NAM and ultimately the clients we serve will benefit from our new found knowledge and insights.

This summer I took a class with Margaret Wheatley, a well known author on leadership and organizational development. The class was about being Comfortable with Uncertainty and we began the class with these questions: What is the core belief around which you do your work? What if you discovered your core belief was false?

For most, fear ensues and gets in the way of doing our work in a meaningful way. So we must find a way to overcome the fear. Wheatley goes on to say that leading during chaotic times calls for building meaningful relationships and holding meaningful dialog to develop clarity around how to respond and overcome the fear that is holding us back.

In 1983, the community was faced with an economic meltdown and uncertain times similar to what we are experiencing now. People were losing their jobs, their homes and they were faced with great uncertainty. The clergy in northwest Houston began to dialog around what they were seeing and eventually decided that while they had no control over the economy, they had control over their own response to what was happening. So they set their theological differences aside and decided to pool their resources so they could help more people. That was the year they decided to found Northwest Assistance Ministries.

Since 1983, we have been and continue to be, the community's response during chaotic times. We are Neighbors Helping Neighbors meet basic human needs. So while we have no control over what goes on in Washington or in the world at large, we can find peace and comfort in knowing that together we can make a difference in each other's lives. A difference for the better.
When asked “What thing about humanity surprises you the most?”, the Dalai Lama answered: “Man…because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present – the result being that he does not live in the present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

We all have a higher purpose. In every age, people have sought the meaning of life, that’s the journey for each one of us, to figure out why we are here. We often hear, what’s the bottom line, the return on investment (ROI)? I wonder about what has been invested in every individual. We all have God given skills, abilities, unique talents and opportunities to use them, so what’s God’s return on investment (GROI) in each one of us? What were we shaped for? In his Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren talks about how we were made for service, to serve God and neighbor.

Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) has long been a conduit for service. After all, our mission is to strive to meet basic human needs through Neighbors helping Neighbors. NAM is not just a place, it is an army of service-minded people – approximately 85 staff members, more than 2,000 volunteers, and countless benefactors who want to be part of something greater than themselves.

Twenty-eight years ago, NAM was founded by ten congregations that put aside their theological differences to work together for the common good. That spirit of cooperation can still be seen today among the people of different backgrounds and faiths that team up to help the most vulnerable in our community. Walk through NAM’s Food Pantry, Assistance Program or visit with Meals on Wheels drivers and you will see that our volunteers not only respect each other’s differences, they celebrate them.

NAM is like a tapestry that is only as strong as its individual threads. Fortunately, our threads are the people that work so hard and are using their God given talents to serve. These threads are the hard-working staff members, the dedicated volunteers, and the generous donors who want to make a difference.

We all have gifts of time, talent, or treasure that we are meant to share. This is our blessing and our purpose in life. Do we live anxiously, or do we live in the present moment? If we take a moment to look around, we will see how blessed we are and how many opportunities exist to share our blessings. Our service to others is the legacy we leave on this earth. Start your legacy today. Share. Volunteer. Give.

The need can be overwhelming, but we are making a difference. The legacy of kindness and generosity is passed on to all who enter NAM’s doors seeking relief, searching for hope. As Mother Teresa once said; “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

While scrutiny is good and keeps organizations on their toes, sometimes the data, rules and regulations create a quagmire that even groups like Charity Navigator have trouble interpreting. When they fail to understand the rules or use a one size fits all approach to rating all organizations, sometimes they end up hurting good organizations by attributing low ratings which in turn results in lost donations for really good charities like NAM that are struggling to meet the overwhelming demand for services in a down economy.

You may have read a few months back when the Houston Chronicle reported that Charity Navigator had rated NAM as a 4 Star Charity based on efficiency and its capacity to raise enough funds to cover program expenses. Inevitably we knew that once Charity Navigator,(a charity watchdog) rec'd our 2008-2009 Form 990 (tax return), our 4 star rating would drop to a 2 star rating and a cursory check over the weekend confirmed we are once again officially a 2 star charity. The reason behind this drastic dip in ratings is due to a little known accounting rule entitled FASB116, here's a synopsis:

One key component of FASB116 is the requirement that all unconditional promises to give (pledges)be recognized in the year the notification of the pledge is received even though the charity does not receive all the cash in year one. This can cause significant fluctuations in the change in net assets of an NFP. For example, if you receive a $1,000,000 award to be paid over the next 5 years you would have to record the entire $1,000,000 in Year 1. This would likely cause a large increase in net assets in Year 1, however; as the funds are spent in Years 2-5 you would likely show a decrease in net assets. These fluctuations can make it difficult to properly budget and are often confusing to the readers of your financial statements and Form 990.

Every three years, NAM has been fortunate to receive a three year pledge of $1.2 million from one source. The first year of the pledge, when we must recognize all the revenue up front even though we only receive 1/3 of the grant, Charity Navigator rates us a 4 star charity, the second year - we typically are rated a 3 star and finally in the third year we drop to a 2 star charity. The reason behind this is because Charity Navigator bases it's rating on efficiency and capacity. So while we are an extremely efficient charity they ding us on lack of capacity in years 2 and 3 of mult-year grants because the tax return shows we spent a whole lot more than what we brought in because the proceeds rec'd in years 2 and 3 must be recorded as expenses, mainly due to FASB 116.

Much to my dismay, I also discovered that under the "Accountability" tab NAM was dinged for:

1) staff and board are not listed on the website. They have always been listed.

2) No audited financial statements. Audited financials are in the Annual Report which is always posted under Facts and Figures.

3) 990 is not on the website. There is a clear link to view our 990 on Guidestar as well that has always been there and we tell people that copies are provided upon request. .

4) They stated our financials are not audited by an independent accountant even though our tax return was prepared and signed by our independent accountant and the 990 indicates an independent auditor performed a single audit.

5) Organization does not have an Audit Committee review the annual audit.

We followed the instructions for the 2008 Form 990, page 39 under Section XI which state that if you are filing a consolidated tax return (we file NAM and NAM Endowment together) answer "No" to the questions that asks if your financials were compiled or reviewed by an independent accountant. Then if you answer "No" to that question, you have to answer "No" to the subsequent question which asks if you have an Audit Committee that reviews the audit performed by an independent accountant. The 2010 Form 990 has been changed to accomodate consolidated returns.

While we have written to Charity Navigator in the past and once again, I have shared my not so happy thoughts with them, I highly encourage each one of you, as NAM aupporters to create a free account on Charity Navigator, www.charitynavigator.org, search for Northwest Assistance Ministries and post a review regarding your thoughts and experiences with NAM. This will help others who would otherwise decide NOT to support us because of Charity Navigator's unfair rating standards.

Thanks in advance for your support and for your advocacy around this issue,

“What are you willing to give up, to go up?” John C. Maxwell, Thinking for a Change

We all have dozens of important components of our lives that pull us in many directions. We often have brilliant ideas both personally and professionally we would like to bring to fruition. But the question is how to make it all happen? The disappointing answer is probably that you cannot make it all happen, but you CAN impact the most important components and do it with excellence and joy. The first step is to recognize that you cannot do it ALL excellently. You may be able to do a lot quite well. Getting Focused begins with setting our priorities. What is truly important to my spirit, my family, my work, and me? What are my strengths that I enjoy honing and from which I reap and sew the most benefit? Do I want to excel? What am I willing to let go of? Ask yourself this question: Am I dedicated to removing the distractions both physical and mental to clear the path so I can clarify and concentrate on my true priorities and excel exponentially?

After much thought and prayer, I leave it in God's hands and intently listen while striving to be the best I can be each day. The good thing is that if we fail today, we get to start over the next day:) Be patient and have faith is what I tell myself each day. It will all come about in God's time, not mine.

When I told them I worked for Northwest Assistance Ministries, they let me know how often they shop at the Resale shop and how they always donate their gently used goods because they know the money raised helps their neighbors. When I thanked the individual, they then asked why they had never run into me at the shop. I explained that my office is on Kuykendahl in the main NAM facility. The response that came back is one that I have many times over the years, "You have a building on Kuykendahl?"

So along with the majority of folks who resolve to change their ways with the start of a new year, I am publicly pledging to turn over a new leaf and become a more frequent blogger. I also need to ask for your help to let people know all that goes on in our main facility, which is located just south of 1960 at 15555 Kuykendahl. In fact, tell them to come and tour, no appointment necessary, the first Wednesday and the third Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. They'll be amazed at the myriad of programs and services that served more than 190,000 individuals last fiscal year.

                                NAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
                                                 for
                                          FY 09/30/10

Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) touched the lives of more than 130,000 individuals during the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Many NAM clients receive more than one service and participate in more than one program. NAM truly is a “one stop shop” for services. One of the most effective and cost-efficient charities in the community, NAM is a good steward of the resources it receives. Approximately $0.90 of every dollar donated in the 2008-2009 fiscal year went to direct services.

The Assistance Program served 53,752 people with emergency assistance for basic needs, including: shelter, clothing, transportation, prescription medicines, and referrals. The Back to School Project provided 2,940 children with school supplies and clothing, enabling the students to return to school ready to learn. The 2008 Holiday Project provided 1,163 families with holiday dinners and groceries as well as toys and gifts for 3,351 children and teens.

The Children’s Clinic offers primary health care for children from infancy to age 18 and completed office visits, referrals, appointment calls, and case management for 8,200 children. The Clinic’s annual Shot Blitz provided 2,847 immunizations to 821 children. Through collaborative efforts more than 400 children were connected to health insurance benefits.

The Family Violence Center provided crisis intervention, support groups, adult and children’s counseling, emergency shelter, legal advocacy and education to 2,102 people. In addition, 12,687 students participated in 447 educational presentations through The Youth Education Program.

Through the Fifty Plus program, 1,993 seniors participated 7,201 times in activities designed to enhance socialization, physical fitness, and mental capacities. In addition, through Senior Wheels and NAM transport, volunteers provided 883 rides to seniors.

The Food Pantry provided groceries for well-balanced meals to 36,456 people.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network provided 5,368 shelter nights to 254 adults and children transitioning from homelessness. Staff provided 986 hours of case management and ensured the provision of parenting, life skills classes and counseling for substance abuse, mental health, and family issues.

Meals on Wheels provided 137,430 nutritious meals to an average of 550 homebound seniors and disabled adults each weekday and 90 individuals on Saturdays.

Through the Rotary Learning Center, 33,526 hours of instruction were provided to 473 students in Adult Basic Education and GED, English as a Second Language, English Literacy, Civics, Computer Training, and Career Development & Training.

The Shelter and Energy Assistance Program distributed over $850,000 in assistance to 7,566 people. Funded by government grants, this program is geared to prevent homelessness and to help homeless families become self-sufficient. In addition, 888 elderly or disabled adults received more than a million dollars to help to pay their energy bills thanks to a partnership with Sheltering Arms Senior Services.

Prayer of Thanks

With just a day and a half before we shut down to celebrate the things we are grateful for with dear family and friends, we have already shared more than 700 Thanksgiving meals with families who are struggling this holiday season to make ends meet. Today and tomorrow we will serve another 100 or so families which is a miracle in itself as just a few weeks ago, there was just one frozen turkey in the NAM freezer but the community heard the call and rose to the occasion.

So it is only fitting and just that we at NAM give thanks to all those generous volunteers, donors and hard working NAM staff that have chosen to participate in the time honored NAM tradition of Neighbors Helping Neighbors. I offer the following prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the opportunity to serve here at NAM. We ask your blessing on all those who share their time, talents and treasures to make our work possible. We ask you to let their light shine so that others may see their example. For they truly know, it is in the giving that we receive.

We ask you to give patience and strength to those who are struggling and we thank you for a generous, loving community that knows the importance of NAM that has been a beacon of hope to thousands throughout the years.

We are a nation that is still struggling to recover from this latest economic downturn which has created hardships and despair for so many. Even though we are hurting, we are resolved to do what is good, and right, and just. We know that in serving others, we are serving You. We also know that despite the hard times, we have much to be grateful for in our country.

Help us to remember what it means to be Americans, a people endowed with abundant blessings. Help us to cherish the freedoms we enjoy and inspire us to stand with courage, united as one Nation in the midst of any adversity.

Lord, accept our praise and thanks for your steadfast love. Lord, may you bless the meals we share this Thanksgiving in the name of the Father whose love sustains us and of the Holy Spirit, whose guidance maintains us, we ask a blessing on this meal.

Amen.

What is Ministry?

What do you think of when you hear the word "ministry"? Over the years, I have observed ministry to be a demonstration of faith in action. Ministry is an unconditional giving of your time, talents, and treasures without expecting anything, not even a thank you. You do it out of love..not for anything else. It's when you do things for others because you can, because its the right thing to do, even when no one else is watching.

These unconditional, random acts of kindness collectively create hope and encouragement that replace feelings of desperation, loneliness and despair. How do I know this? I, along with the staff and volunteers at NAM, have seen the relief on an anxious parent's face once they know they can get much needed medical attention for their sick baby even if they have no insurance. My volunteers have shared the joy they feel when they deliver a hot meal to a lonely senior who otherwise would have no visitors. I listened to a ten year old boy, whose family became homeless when both his parents lost their jobs, tell us how his mother doesn't cry anymore because of the safety net provided to them through the Interfaith Hospitality Network at NAM.

Ministry brings out the best in people. It makes us realize that we are part of something greater than ourselves and over time, we feel better about ourselves and the world around us. Ministry is what we are all called to do, give unconditionally of ourselves to make the world a better place. If you have been wanting to make a positive change in your life, I personally invite you to attend our next volunteer orientation. Orientations are held the first Wednesday and the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. The group meets in the second floor conference room at NAM's main building at 15555 Kuykendahl in North Houston.

Orientation reservations are not required, but are appreciated. Please call the NAM Volunteer Coordinator at 281-885-4609 if you are planning to attend an orientation or need additional information. You may also call 281-885-4565 to hear a recorded message.

Are You A Smart Shopper?

One of the easiest ways I know to give back is to donate to and shop at NAM Resale. Since 1983, NAM Resale has generated more than $20 million to help neighbors in need throughout northwest Harris County. Recently, I came across an article by Pat Swartley entitled the "Smart Shopper" that resonated with me and I hope it will with you too. Pat writes:

"As women of faith, one of the best ways we can be good stewards of what God has given us is to shop wisely, making every penny count. How can you find fabulous bargains for a fraction of their original cost? I'm going to tell you one of the best kept secrets of smart shoppers: Shop resale.

Wait! Don't touch that mouse! Resale is one of the fastest growing segments of the retail industry, according to the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops. Today as never before, savvy shoppers are leaving the malls and discount stores and heading out to their neighborhood resale and thrift shops.

Why? To save money. They are looking for a designer label suit with the tags still on it, or home furnishings for 50 -75% less than the original retail price. And it is not uncommon for an upscale resale shop to put out 500 or more new items on their floor every week, so resale shopping can become an exciting adventure you'll want to do often. But the true gold mine is in the constant savings resale shoppers realize every day, which helps them to become good stewards of God's bounty. Resale shopping is not just for those on a budget, but rather, it is for those who want to spend money wisely, while beautifully outfitting their family and home.

One of the biggest surprises for a new resale shopper is discovering the variety and quality of merchandise in resale shops. Some shops sell everything and anything; other shops specialize. Ladies resale is very popular, but many sell clothing for the entire family. Furniture and children's resale have been the fastest growing types of resale shops. I once bought a beautiful high quality leather couch and loveseat that looked like new, for only $1,200. (original retail price was over $5,000). I also purchased a bed, mattress, changing table, highchair, stroller, swing, and other assorted nursery items for under $300 and all of it was brand new.

One reason some people shy away from resale is because they have the illusion that everything is… well… used. And sometimes the thought is that used also means old and worn out. The truth is, resale shops today are very selective in accepting merchandise for sale. (NAM volunteers and staff carefully selects items that they know will appeal to NAM's customers)

Resale shops carry "pre owned" merchandise, which can be slightly used or even brand new. Every one of you has something stored in your closet or house that has never been used for one reason or other. (NAM supporters donate those items to NAM resale shop because they know the funds generated will stay right here in their community to help a neighbor in need .) Remember that sweater you got for Christmas that was wrong size? And that fancy kitchen gadget you never used?"

Are you looking for a way to give more to missions, or to a special need at NAM? This could be one way to help NAM earn the cash needed to help a senior buy much needed insulin or to deliver a hot meal.)

I am always amazed at the number of new shoppers that come to NAM's stores every day that are just now discovering how to dress smart while spending wisely. I love telling people about the bargains and great finds at all three of our stores, like the designer black blazer that retails for $220 and I only paid $12 at the Corner Resale on Kuykendahl or the brand name jackets that I find almost monthly for a fraction of their original price, some even have the tags still on them. It makes me feel good when I shop smart and best of all, I know I am supporting a good cause. Did you know that NAM spends $.90 out of every dollar on programs and services? I definitely feel good knowing that not only am I spending my money wisely but so is NAM!

Shop all three locations:

Hence, it is
our relationship with each one that truly determines what kind of life we have, lead and
experience.

When people around us do or say something that involves us - directly or indirectly - we
either RESPOND or REACT and there are consequences to each course of action. The
same goes for when an event occurs in our life. We either respond or react to it. For example, we might feel annoyed if someone continually bumps into us on a crowded bus. We might be tempted to REACT with a negative statement which might escalate the incident into a public confrontation which helps no one.

However, if you noticed those feelings of annoyance and frustration while thinking to
yourself: "What can I do about this?," and chose any number of Responsible actions,
such as moving to a less crowded area, then the action is of Response.
The action of responding becomes an act of freedom and consequently has power within
it. Response creates an opportunity and is in alignment with your commitments. It is also, by definition, an action of responsibility.

Twenty - seven years ago, the faith based community was overwhelmed with requests for assistance in the face of a very tough economic downturn, not unlike today. While they didn't have control over the economy, they could control their response. They chose to pool their resources to help more people. Their RESPONSE was Northwest Assistance Ministries. NAM has touched and transformed thousands of lives over the last twenty-seven years through the generosity of neighbors who choose to share their time and resources to lend a hand to make the community a kinder place for all who enter NAM's doors.

So while we may want to REACT to a bad economy by feeling depressed or overwhelmed, we can always RESPOND by taking control and getting involved to make things better instead of reacting to the negative.

The Season of Giving is Upon Us and...

Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) has a great need for volunteers to coordinate its holiday projects, sort toys or food, and for donations of food and toys or other gifts for children and teens.

NAM expects to serve 800 families in November and 1,000 families in December. The Committee serves as a voice for NAM clients and the community by collaborating with legislators, remaining informed of legislative issues, and being a resource on social issues.

Area Ministries Work Together to Level the Playing Field for Area Children

For any child, it can be daunting to face all of the challenges that come with a new school year, but for children who don't have the necessary supplies the experience is bound to be especially difficult. Houston's area ministries know that, which is why they work to help parents provide the necessary supplies and clothing to ensure area children start the school year off right. This year, many area ministries collaborated to help even more children with the aid of Nourish America, a nonprofit organization based in Ojai, California, that partners with organizations across the country to provide impoverished American children, families, pregnant moms, seniors, and others in need with the nutritional supplements and essentials required to lead productive, successful lives.

This year, with help from Nourish America, Northwest Assistance Ministries received almost 7,000 back packs from the Office Depot Foundation and a year’s supply of organic children's vitamins from New Chapter Organics.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5G26vpPNJFY/SoAhu53UkmI/AAAAAAAAAEM/C6x5Bb8CaX4/s320/untitled.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368327845516186210" />

Photo: Teresa Jackson (left) and DeAnna Bosch of Emergency Aid Coalition collect back-to-school supplies, backpacks and vitamins from Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) to distribute to children in their organizations. The vitamins were donated by New Chapter Organics and the backpacks were donated by Office Depot. NAM will distribute supplies to 3,500 children as part of its Back-to-School Program this year, and the extra donated items will be shared among other ministries collecting school items for children. Backpacks and vitamins were also received by Stonebridge Church in Magnolia, Humble Area Assistance Ministries, Katy Christian Ministries, Memorial Assistance Ministries, Spring ISD and Klein ISD.

Modified Donation Acceptance Policy

As many of you may be aware, the government passed the Consumer Product Safety Act that went into effect February 10, 2009 prohibiting the selling or reselling of clothes and toys for children 12 and under if they contain more than a specified percentage of lead or a plastic additive called phthalates.

We have just become aware of a fairly affordable testing solution for lead and phthalates. Because of this new option, NAM will begin conducting business as usual regarding the acceptance of ALL donated goods.

Once we have the testing equipment in place, you will once again see children's items for sale in our shops. I have also received calls from volunteers concerned about the NAM's ability to distribute books in our Children's Clinic and throughout the ministry. NAM has received a certificate of safety from the manufacturer which will allow us to continue to distribute new books to children.

We thank you for your patience and support as we continue to work through this process.

Carole

New Law Poses Challenges for NAM

February was a time of change for NAM, as you may have noticed if you’ve visited any of our three resale shops recently. As a community organization, we pride ourselves on striving to serve the basic human needs of our neighbors at all stages of life, from infants to seniors. However, new regulations for the sale and distribution of children’s items have presented us with a challenge in meeting some of the needs of children in our community.

On Feb 10, 2009, new requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act took effect, prohibiting the selling or reselling of clothes and toys for children 12 and under if they contain more than a specified percentage of lead or a plastic additive called phthalates.

There has been much confusion surrounding the new law and its application to resale stores, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has clearly stated that although resellers are exempt from testing and certifying children’s merchandise, they will still be held liable for any merchandise they sell that contains the contaminants.

We do our best to ensure that NAM is in compliance with all federal and state regulations, and so we have chosen to discontinue the sale and distribution of merchandise for children 12 and under in our resale shops as well as our programs.

We know NAM and our supporters care about the safety of our children. In fact, many of our programs work to ensure the security, health and well-being of children on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, although this law was passed with good intentions, it seems like it has been interpreted quite broadly. Some services that NAM once provided for families and children will no longer be available. Not only are we no longer able to provide low-cost children’s clothing, books, toys and furniture at our resale shops, we also are unable to give some of these items to children through our programs. Many families in dire need have counted on NAM’s assistance in providing free items, such as clothing and baby furniture, for their children. For years, NAM has been able to offer these essentials thanks to support from neighbors helping neighbors.

In recent years, up to 10% of NAM’s resale shop revenue has come from the sale of children’s merchandise. Last year, this translated into approximately $170,000. Revenue from the stores goes toward helping community members in need through our multiple social services programs.

Although many resale shops like NAM’s throughout the country are hoping for a reprieve on these strict regulations, it seems unlikely that any clear changes will be made in the near future.

We intend to keep you informed of any changes that arise in the law, but for now, we are considering creative and efficient ways to continue to serve our youngest neighbors in need.
We are now emphasizing the need for more furniture donations to our resale shops to replace the lost revenue from children’s merchandise. In terms of program necessities, our future focus may be on the donation of gift cards, rather than merchandise, to fulfill the needs of our clients.

These new regulations have presented a considerable challenge to NAM, but with the continued support of our donors, volunteers and community supporters, it is a challenge that we will face with the type of determination that has made NAM so effective as a community resource for more than 26 years.

If you are concerned about the impact of the new federal regulations, please contact your legislators or visit www.congress.org.

For further information or updates, please check the Consumer Safety Product Commission's Web site at www.cpsc.gov.

Thank you for your continued support,

Carole Little

New Law Will Impact NAM Resale Shops

On February 10, 2009, new federal regulations will go into effect that prohibit the reselling of children's clothing or toys for children 12 and under unless they are tested for lead and a plastic additive called phthalates. You may have seen TV news reports or newspaper articles about these regulations. Testing can cost anywhere from $35,000 - $50,000. The broad scope of the complicated law and it’s interpretation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC") could effectively make it illegal for parents to resell their children’s clothing and gear at a garage sale, on eBay, Craig’s List, or through consignment stores or annual children’s consignment sales. If donated to a nonprofit like Goodwill or Salvation Army, those organizations can’t legally resell it as of February 10th. Hand-me-down clothing for kids ages 12 and under will be illegal to resell. It will be a banned hazardous product. The fines of $100,000, potential jail time and label as a felon for violations are stiff.

On Tuesday, the CPSC tentatively exempted the following: items with lead parts that a child cannot access; clothing, toys and other goods made of natural materials such as cotton, silk, wool and wood; and electronics that are impossible to make without lead. That still leaves clothes made from polyester or other non-cotton materials and toys made from plastic needing to be tested or thrown out. It also means that only clothes without embellishments – zippers, snaps, buttons, tags – qualify.

It appears unlikely that a solution will be found before the law goes into effect on February 10. At best, there may only be a temporary pause on the sale of many items.

NAM cares for the well being of our clients and plan to be in full compliance with any regulations that are set.

Please feel free to contact me or Dale Leatherman at dleatherman@namonline.org should you have any questions.

Carole Little

What Do You and Bill Gates Have in Common?

What Do You and Bill Gates Have In Common?
Why do some people have what looks like “it ALL”? You all have 24 hours in a day and 168 hours each week. Are you spending your time wisely?

A Scenario:
If you sleep a healthy 8 hours a night you have 112 left.

If you take 30 minutes a day for breakfast and an hour each for lunch and dinner you now have 94.5 left

If you drive 30 minutes to and from work, you now have 89.5 left.

If you work 45 hours a week you have 44.5 left in your week to take care of yourself, your family, your health and your spirit.

The problem is not the amount of time. The problem is what we are doing with it. If you spend from 8pm to 10pm watching TV, you now have just 30 hours left. What could you have done with those precious hours? How much of your day and week is being spent on things that help you grow and make a difference: in your business, in your relationships, with your significant other or children, in knowledge, in fun, in health or in spirit?

Who are you spending your time with? Are they people that are supportive and energizing, or do you feel drained at the end of your time with them? Are they people you are striving to emulate and can bring out your best?

Allow yourself blocks of uninterrupted time to accomplish projects. Stop being at the mercy of E-mail, telephone and people that do not value your time. Think of the times you have been preparing for a vacation. Suddenly you get serious about your time. You become super productive. Do that every day and you will give Bill a run for the money!

Our time is the one commodity of which we each get a fixed amount. We do not even know exactly what that fixed amount is. It makes sense to use it with wisdom, joy, and for our own growth as well as for those around us. To Life!

CHALLENGE: Look at where you spend your time and evaluate if it is truly being well spent on what you consider priorities for your life. Make one change that will take back time from the mundane and help you grow where you believe it will truly count! Consider giving just two hours a month to deliver Meals on Wheels or volunteer 4 hours a week in the NAM Food Pantry.

“You will never find time for anything. Three of those partners, Spring ISD, Lonestar College and the Willowbrook Rotary combine their efforts with NAM to assist individuals with English as a Second Language classes, GED, Computer classes and Citizenship classes. Thanks to those of you who purchased tables, brought new donors, donated auction items, sold raffle tickets and purchased auction items at the event itself. The money raised through table sales and raffle tickets comes in during June - September when donations are typically down and helps us feed the kids that are not getting free breakfast and lunch when school is out for the summer.

Through your generous support, NAM raised $460,000 (gross) as of Monday which is phenomenal since we budgeted $464K (gross). Expenses are budgeted at 100K and we should come in under so all in all, given these uncertain times, we are extremely please with the results. This past week, as thousands of families turn to NAM for assistance, we were fortunate to receive calls from both Rep. Patricia Harless & Rep. Debbie Riddle who have worked diligently to bring much needed supplies to those who continue to struggle to feed their families without power. They were able to procure six tractor trailers filled with meal replacement drinks, vitamin water, nutrition bars from Nourish America among many other wonderful things they have done to assist the community and NAM.

The logistics of unloading, stocking and distributing this fabulous gift required some spur of the moment planning. In the midst of our management huddle, one of our NAM volunteers, SJ Lewis, called to see how she could help. I told her NAM needed lots of volunteers to assist with the shipments that were coming in this week. Not only did SJ agree to volunteer, within two hours a fork lift arrived to assist us in unloading the hundreds of pallets of supplies!

Families continue to pour through our doors looking for relief, food, information and assistance on how to get back on their feet and with your help, we will continue to be there with or without power.

While both the FM1960 store and the Jones Road store have had power restored, NAM's main building remains without power. The generator has begun to malfunction causing the phone system to fail. We have forwarded the main line to an answering system to keep the community informed of daily activities and needs. That number is 281.885.4555.

NAM needs volunteers to help in the food pantry, deliver Meals on Wheels, the shops and to assist families coming to NAM for food, information and referral.

The need for food and cash donations to assist NAM are gratefully received as daily the challenges continue to grow. To volunteer, show up at the times and locations previously listed in the blog. Donations can be made securely through NAM's website or mailed to 15555 Kuykendahl Road, Houston, TX 77090 c/o NAM President.

On behalf of NAM and the community we serve, I wish to thank all of our local, State and Federal representatives that have worked tirelessly to restore normalcy to our community by advocating for Houstonians day and night. Hat's off to all of NAM's volunteers and donors - we can't do it without you! Finally, to my staff who find themselves doing jobs they never thought they'd be doing - thank you for your tireless efforts, flexibility and hard work.

Together, you make a huge difference in the lives of those struggling!
If you wish to get involved, email me at nampresident@gmail.com or simply come to NAM between the hours of 9 - 2:30 when we are distributing food and information. We sure could use your help.

NAM's Food Pantry Running Low

NAM's food pantry is running low and we need your help to serve those who will be coming to us over the next several weeks.
