Charlotte Bobcats Away Jerseys 2009-2010

The new Charlotte Bobcats jersey design confirms my observation: V-neck jerseys are in!

The Philadelphia 76ers' new jersey for the season sports the a similar v-neck design of the Bobcats' new threads. But other than that, the design approaches are different.

While the 76ers took a step back to their roots, the Bobcats went forward and left the campy old design. They did away with the stylized "Bobcats" and "Charlotte" text and just went with a straight forward font face. The team also did away with the horrendous looking italicized numbers.

Two design elements stands out in the design: first is the pinstripes, the second is the sublte orange and white lines on the edge of the neck hole and on the sides. I've never been too high on pinstripes but it helps "fill out" the space since the orange and white lines are too subtle and thin. I personally think that the jerseys suit the play of their current roster (Gerald Wallace, D.J. Augustin, and Tyson Chandler, to mention a few)

Over-all, the design is much better than the previous design-- by going to a more subtle direction, the Bobcats have elevated their previous look. Now if they could only just improve their team play...

Philadelphia 76ers Home Jerseys 2009-2010

In the NBA, paying homage to tradition is one of the best ways for a team to change its identity and brand. For the Philadelphia 76ers this 2009-2010, they brought almost everything back.

Since 2007, the Sixers have tried to integrate the red, white, and blue of old in their jerseys, particularly in their alternate road uniforms. After shedding the image Allen Iverson brought, the Sixers wanted to go back to their roots in terms of look.

The new home uniforms bear striking resemblance to the ones Julius Erving wore in the 1980's, but with an update: it now features a v-neck and the neck arm holes have a thicker, solid band. There's also a red detail tapering on the side and on the edge of neck hole.

The new design is very simple by NBA jersey standards and I think it's a good thing. The Sixers featured one of the busiest looking jerseys in the past.

Orlando Magic Home Jerseys 2008-2009

The Orlando Magic is seen by a lot of NBA pundits as the team of the future as its All-Star center Dwight Howard has yet to celebrate his 25th birthday. Also, the core of Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson are brimming with youth. Thus, a forward-looking jersey seems to be in order for them.

The design of the jersey innovates the usually bland pinstripe implementation with a radiating set of stripes in front, which gives the jersey a dynamic look-- it makes the wearer some sort of body definition with the way the stripes draw your eyes. The neck hole is highlighted by what seems to be a cross between the usual round neck and a v-neck, which is pretty weak if you ask me.

As for the other elements in the jersey's design, the font is appropriate and in line with the modern theme, ans the black tapering stripe looks a bit off, if you ask me.

The Orlando Magic jersey is looks sleek and modern, but has some issues on the details.

2009 NBA All-Star Game Jerseys

The jersey design for the 2009 NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix diverges from the trend in the previous years when the theme of the jersey design has something to do with the host city. (In the last NBA All-Star Game held in Phoenix, Arizona, there was a big cactus emblazoned on the jersey. Seriously.)

The design for this year's game is very futuristic, from the font used in the team name and numbers, but also in the detailing. Jerseys rarely use gradients incorporated in the design, but this one uses gradients on the sides (a design similar to the Dallas Mavericks.)

I really like the execution of the design for this one-- it's modern, sleek, and, looks good on the basketball court. It erases the bad memories from the jerseys they used in the 2008 NBA All-Star Game.

Sacramento Kings Away Jerseys 2008-2009

The Sacramento Kings aren't exactly NBA royalty right now, with a losing record and a core of players that aren't geared to compete in the long term Their jerseys are a different story.

The current design, does communicate, although not so strongly, the quality of royalty, with snobbish colors of purple and black, plus the tapering bands on the side of the jersey look like a couple of knight's lances. However, the font used on the jersey reminds me of an elitist king, rather than a might conqueror.

The jersey features a black collar with a crown icon on the back, which coincides with the trend of placing the team's logo on the back, above the player's name. The neck holes don't feature a lining, but complements the "lances."

Over-all the Sacramento Kings jersy is well designed, but in the basketball context, is pretty weak, much like the team.

New Orleans Hornets Home Jerseys 2008-2009

This is my first post that talks about a team I've blogged about before. And that team is the New Orleans Hornets . :)

The Hornets have not been hot this early in the season, but their new threads are. If you look at the previous design, it was pretty plain, which was a disconnect to what New Orleans (and its popular Mardi Gras festival) was all about. The new jersey design now takes a different route-- it has multi-colored pin stripes and wider bands. The teal color stands out, and the purple is a bit understated. The gold has taken a backseat in this design though. This uniform reminds me of the old Charlotte Hornets unifroms, with the pin-stripes and narrow fonts.

The design will work because it's New Orleans. But if you take this design to, say Utah, it loses its flavor.

Oklahoma City Thunder Away Jersey 2008-2009

The new kid on the NBA block is actually The Artist Formerly Known as the Seattle Supersonics.

The Oklahoma City Thunder may contain familiar faces like Kevin Durant and Desmond Mason, but the team literally now looks different. Gone are the iconic Seattle Sonic Green, and the franchise brought in Light Blue, Orange, Navy Blue, Gold, which not pretty bad colors.

However, once those colors get together with the jersey's rather straightforward design, the result is pretty weak. This jersey reminds me of the old Detroit Pistons jersey in the mid-1990's. The main culprit here is the Light Blue color. It's shade and hue are too weak for professional sports and the pencil-thin linings on the neck and arm holes don't give the jersey much attitude.

If you ask me, the only good thing about this basketball jersey is the font used for the front text and numbers. It probably doesn't help that the team wanted to put "Oklahoma City" in full because it really needs a narrow font.

The Thunder aren't expected to make waves in the NBA this season. That's good because we'll see less of this basketball jersey.

Minnesota Timberwolves Home Jersey 2008-2009

I still can't believe the Minnesota Timberwolves traded away Kevin Garnett. But that was ages ago and things have to move on, right?

So, what perfect time to change the team's image all together. The T-wolves are rebuilding around cornerstone Al Jefferson and another Kevin-- Kevin Love. The team is now espousing a more grind-it-out inside offense and hopefully the energy would carry over into the defensive end.

As far as what the team is wearing on the basketball court, the T-Wolves have also made a change. Gone are the uniforms with the campy simple design, and in are the modern looking basketball jerseys.

The design takes something from the original home jersey design of the 1990's. The word "WOLVES" is emblazoned in front, instead of the complete Timberwolves team name. The details are nice-- the shapes in front and back of the neck give the illusion that its a v-neck. For me, they remind me of the wolf's fangs The the big green pine tree image on the sides plus the blue swoosh give a sharp, firm look. Perhaps it's a homage to the team's new philosophy of dominating the inside.

The new Minnesota Timberwolves jersey is quite timely, and hopefully this change will translate to a positive change on the hard court.

Los Angeles Clippers Alternate Away Jersey 2007-2008

The Los Angeles Clippers can be argued as the franchise not worth emulating-- they have a losing record for the franchise (.365 as of this writing), they have reached the playoffs only four times since moving to Los Angeles in 1984 and their roster seem to be in a constant state of flux. This summer, they added Baron Davis and Marcus Camby, but lost stalwart Elton Brand and versatile swingman Corey Magette in the process.

This mediocrity seem to be reflecting on the team's jersey. The Clippers have a very standard sports motif-- red, white and blue. The alternate away jersey uses the blue as the base color and the white is solely used as the detailing for the neck and arm holes, as well as the strips on the side. This lining is thick enough to accommodate the alternative Los Angeles Clippers logo on the v-neck tip on the front side.

The design is quite strong as the thick linings and the fonts for the numbers and player name are bold and would exude strength. The weakness is in the front-side "Los Angeles" as it seems lost in the shuffle. The white bands on the sides are pretty weak in my opinion.

The Los Angeles Clippers are looking to change their fortunes this season-- they probably need to look at what they are wearing on court as well.

Utah Jazz Home Jersey 2007-2008

The Utah Jazz are playing the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2008 NBA Western Conference Semi-Finals and they are playing a tight series. Almost ten years ago, the two teams faced each other but the Jazz featured Karl Malone and John Stockton and they wore a different look.

This season's Utah Jazz have long scrapped the "mountain" jersey and are now wearing a more sporty-looking jersey that doesn't elicit the Jazz name nor the Utah landscape. The jersey's design is more appropriate for basketball and it utilizes the team's color scheme of Blue, Silver, White and Purple better.

The big bold "JAZZ" on the front side and the wide solid blue linings on the neck and arm holes of the jersey convey a more dominating image. However, the font used for the numbers seem to have little congruence with the serif fonts used in the front and back sides. The final detailing is the thin lines on the sides. The design of Utah's jersey is quite similar to the Dallas Mavericks' jersey, although it's simpler--perhaps matching the teams' direct to the point play and long time Jazz coach Jerry Sloan's philosophy of "just playing basketball."

If the Jazz lived on "Stockton to Malone" in the past, the team is now banking on Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer to continue the Jazz' winning ways on new threads.

Toronto Raptors Home Jerseys 2007-2008

Team brand identity changes need not be drastic. Take the case of the Toronto Raptors.

A few years ago, the team had a bona fide superstar in Vince Carter but the Raptors were struggling. Carter was publicly demanding for a trade and he eventually got it, which left Toronto in an iffy spot-- the player that put the team on the NBA map was gone. Fortunately, forward Chris Bosh stepped up and a new era of basketball in Toronto began.

Had the Raptors followed the trend on NBA teams having a facelift after a major team change, they opted to tweak the team's image. The Vince Carter Era in Toronto had the team wearing purple-dominated home and away jerseys, so all the team did was change the main color of the team, from purple to red. The current design of the home jersey is virtually the same as the one the Raptors unveiled in the 1999 NBA season, except it sheds the purple details.

I personally like the design of the Raptors jersey during its initial incarnation, and I think the red-dominated scheme is better. It give the jersey focus and much active appeal. The thick outlines for the text and player numbers are also a good accent.

The Toronto Raptors home jersey is definitely well-designed and if it could withstand a major change, then it's really that great.

New Orleans Hornets Home Jerseys 2007-2008

If the NBA Playoff started today, the New Orleans Hornets would get the top seed in the tight and competitive Western Conference. Pretty impressive for a franchise that wears one of the un-friendliest color schemes in the league.

The Hornets sport a teal, gold, purple and white color. Yeah, this color scheme fits the city and the Mardi Gras concept, but come on, teal?!? You really can't fault the team for the color anyway-- teal was inherited from the branding when the team was still known as the Charlotte Hornets.

The home jersey design is one of the few designs that do not have linings for the arm holes. The color lining for the neck hole has the team hues. The good thing about the design is that it's minimalistic-- I think the designer is aware that the more you put the colors of the team, the worse the design gets. I also don't like the font used for the front text. It's too thin.

The New Orleans Hornets may have a team golden age with Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler and David West and they will be wearing the teal, gold and purple deep in the playoffs. I do think the Hornets are due for a team re-branding.

Los Angeles Lakers Unveil New Uniforms

The Los Angeles Lakers have unveiled their new jerseys for the upcoming season. Ditching the legendary "Forum Blue and Gold," the Lakers team will sport "Celtic Green and Hot Pink."

According to team spokesperson John Black, "The new Lakers identity is our grand welcome to the Ronnie Turiaf era of Lakers basketball. We were inspired the the Boston Celtics green color as homage to all the luck they have been having, especially with the Kevin Garnett Trade. The Hot Pink was selected to accentuate Ronnie Turiaf's electric dance moves and cheering from the bench."

Kobe Bryant was nonetheless impressed with the new uniforms. Bryant has hinted that he will change his jersey number again to welcome the new jerseys. "I'm thinking of having the number 69, because it's 23 (from LeBron) plus 5 (from Jason Kidd) plus 41 (Reigning MVP Dirk Nowtizki). My new number will be hot," Bryant related.

On a non-related matter, Kareem Abdul Jabbar has demanded for royalties for camera shots of him every time protege Andrew Bynum makes a post-up move in the paint.

Indiana Pacers Home Jersey 2007-2008

How the mighty have fallen.

Remember those days when the Indiana Pacers were a lock in the NBA's Eastern Conference? Do these sound familiar: Reggie Miller shooting clutch 3's, Rik Smits doing his "Dunkin Dutchman" thing, with the Davises (Dale and Antonio) performing the yeoman's work in the paint? The Pacers were wearing those awful pin-striped unis to franchise glory.

Fast forward to the 2000's: franchise Pacers (Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson & Jermaine O'neal) were involved in a brawl with fans in Detroit in 2004, new players brought in seemed to continue the thug culture and that all prompted Indiana fixture Donnie Walsh to retire from the front-office. During that time, the Pacers unveiled a new set of jerseys that scrapped the pin-stripes, for the more contemporary looking jerseys that seemed to signal an image purification.

If you look at the home jerseys, design is minimalistic with few details on the sides and neck. The font used for the text is simple and looks narrow, with just using the two main colors of the Pacers' color scheme.

If the Indiana Pacers are serious in revamping their image, they better change more than its jerseys.

Denver Nuggets Away Jerseys 2007-2008

"Powder Blue?!?"

That was my reaction when the Denver Nuggets changed their uniforms and their brand image during the start of the 2003-2004 NBA season. This is another case of new players and management trying to usher in a new era and leave a legacy. The 2003-2004 season was the first for franchise player Carmelo Anthony. It has been said that then Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe pushed for this cosmetic change.

The reason why I was skeptical of the change is that I think powder blue in combination with gold looks too "cute" for the NBA. And if you recall the brawl Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith and Nene in a game against New York, you will see the contradictory image the jersey shows. "Carmelo Anthony is a thug" was a common thing to see in the web then.

So aside from the bad color scheme, the jersey doesn't really inspire and looks to soft. The light colors could have worked if more high contrast colors were added into the mix, like red or brown. Another thing I'd like to see here is stronger looking fonts.

The Denver Nuggets jersey, in my opinion, is too soft and weak for the NBA.

New Jersey Nets Alternate Away Jersey 2007-2008

One must wonder how come the alternate away jersey the New Jersey Nets uses a red, white and blue color scheme when the Nets' colors are navy blue, red, silver, and white.

The reason is more of a nostalgic one-- the New Jersey Nets sported a red, white and blue jersey prior to the 1998 season and that color scheme was best known when the legendary Julius "Dr. J" Erving played for the franchise.

If you ask me, the Nets need a new look. Not necessarily changing the logo, but change the jersey design. The font used for the front text doesn't work and the criss-crossing lines on the sides seem out of place. I also think next season is the best time, since the Nets traded away franchise player Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks.

Houston Rockets Home Jersey 2007-2008

There seems to be a trend in the NBA these days-- crafting the team's brand and image according to its current franchise player. The Philadelphia 76ers did during the Allen Iverson Era, the Cleveland Cavaliers did it for LeBron James and the Houston Rockets did it to coincide with its "Asian Invasion."

The Rockets' third logo change happened when Yao Ming started to emerge as a premier center in the NBA and the move to the Toyota Center. So the switch to the minimalist Red jersey seemed to be aligned with the sea change.

In my opinion, the Rockets latest design is too subdued for sports. Yes, it has a very aggressive color, but the over-all design is to sparse and not dynamic. I see the Houston Rockets jersey as one of the lower-end NBA Basketball Jersey spectrum dwellers.

2008 NBA All-Star Game Home Jersey

One aspect of the NBA All-Star game I look forward to is the look of the jerseys for that game. 2008 is no exception for me.

This year's jersey is heavily influenced by the atmosphere of New Orleans, the host city. The distinct design is the different colors of the front and back sides of the jersey itself-- the home team has white and gold. The trademark red color of the Western Conference is emblazoned on the front text and numbers on the back. Red bands also figure distinctly on the sides.

Is the jersey good? Comparing it to the jerseys of the past, it's pretty innovative. It draws from the Toronto Raptors style of having two different colors for the front and back. My only beef with it is the style of the text for the team name. But over-all, a solid design.

Portland Trail Blazers Alternate Away Jersey 2007-2008

The Portland Trail Blazers' jersey is one of the few NBA jersey designs that has not gone a major revamp since its inception. If you would recall how these teams looked like, the 1970's Blazers led by Bill Walton, the early 90's team with Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter, and the early 2000's deep team with Rasheed Wallace and Scottie Pippen, the Blazers jersey always featured the red, black and white colors.

What makes the current version of the jersey different is the addition of silver as a detailing color and the use of a more modern looking font for both the front and back text. It's interesting to note that the black color outlining the text. The previous design featured a drop-shadow for the players' names and the team name.

The jersey's design is a modern take on a classic. I see the 1970's influence with the double bands emblazoned on the front side. Is it good? I'm not too high on it, but I feel it works for them. I have liked the font used for the Blazers numbers since the Drexler-Porter era.

Overall, the Portland Trail Blazers is solid, but does not blaze a trail.

Boston Celtics Home Jersey 2007-2008

Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Dave Cowens, John Havlicek, Kevin McHale.

Those great Celtic forwards have worn the Celtic Green (and White) with great success and wore those colors to championship glory.

You may want to add Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce on that list at the rate the Celtics are winning these days.

But as far as the jerseys the new age Boston Celtics are concerned, its design dates back to the 1950's. You can't get any more simple with the look of a basketball jersey: Duo-tone to represent the home and away colors and blocky fonts on the front and back for the team name and numbers. Some people would say the basketball jersey design is classic. I say it's dated.

It's good for the Celtics they are winning a lot this season-- their jerseys aren't as hot as their play on the court.

Phoenix Suns Alternate Away Jersey 2007-2008

I kinda miss those days when the Phoenix Suns had black alternate road jerseys. That black alternate road jerseys were worn during the Charles Barkley and Jason Kidd eras of the 1990's. Now, we have to settle from Steve Nash, Amare Stoudamire and Shawn Marion to wear these eye-catching, but annoying, orange road jerseys.

The current jersey's design was first used for the 2000-2001 season, when the Phoenix Suns also went through some minor brand tweaks. The team added the gray shade to the distinct purple and orange theme and unveiled an alternate team logo, which featured an image of the mythical Phoenix bird and the letters "PHX."

The design of the jersey is a bit unique in the NBA, where thick bars encroach both arm hole areas to almost reaching the neck hole, creating a wide band of the secondary color, in this case of the alternate away jersey, it is gray. This band runs down both sides of the basketball shorts, thus creating space for the alternate logo. The bands create a "narrowing" effect and makes smaller players appear smaller, since the sizes of the text of the numbers, player's name and team name remains constant, regardless of player size.

The orange jerseys could be a new trend, with three teams for the 2007-2008 season sporting them-- the Golden State Warriors, the Charlotte Bobcats and the Phoenix Suns. I just hope it's a trend that would end soon because orange jerseys are just plain annoying.

Philadelphia 76ers Alternate Away Jersey 2007-2008

Putting the "Phila" in the Philadelphia 76ers' identity, the team has a new road jersey that pays homage to the relevant colors in the team's history. Prior to the 1997 season, the Sixers were sporting the red, white and blue jersey that were popularized by the 1980's teams of Julius Erving and Moses Malone. The 76ers had a change of image, perhaps to signal the team was going into a new era with Allen Iverson. The new logo, had a darker look, distant from the very Americana old logo.

The alternate jersey design melds the current design and the old school colors. The result is a similar jersey design to the early 1990's jersey worn by the crappy teams led by Shawn Bradley and Jerry Stackhouse. The emblazoned "Phila" is now worn by the team in this Andre Iguodala era. The team for the 2007-2008 team is crappy. It seems the Sixers are in need of a team overhaul, as well as new jersey designs.

Golden State Warriors Alternate Away Jersey 2007-2008

There's something about an orange basketball jersey that annoys me. The Golden State Warriors' alternate road jersey does just that-- annoy me terribly.

While the color scheme of the trip is not entirely bad, the use of orange could have been downplayed a bit or totally not used. The team's colors, navy blue, orange and gold, are a good combination and I personally think is a powerful mix. The details on the neck and arm holes are ok, plus the graphic design is adequate. (The current Warriors logo is not one of the best designed in the league, if you ask me).

Last season brought the team back into the spotlight briefly when Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson and Jason Richardson led the Golden State Warriors' upset of the Dallas Mavericks. The team's jersey may not get that exposure this upcoming playoffs.

I'm giving away shoes!

Thanks to MTV and Run's House, I'm having a tie-up event with Big Lakers Fan to give away Run Athletics shoes. I'll be giving away a two pairs of shoes-- one pair for ladies and another pair for guys.

The women's shoe is a pair of Pastry brand Fab Cookie Boots with the Chocolate Chip colorway pictured below:

The guy's shoes is a Run Athletics Arthur Ashe pair, with the Aussie Grandslam colorway:

So how do you take home either one of these fine kicks? It's very easy in three simple steps:
