Freedom to Read Week

RAISING AWARENESS

CELEBRATING FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION

Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Schools and libraries are regularly asked to remove books and magazines from their shelves. Free expression on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read.

For more information, please visit the Freedom To Read Website.

Daisy Reader

General Information

With the launch of a new provincially-funded library program, public libraries across Canada are enabling people with print disabilities to access literature like never before.

Thanks to funding from the government of Ontario, public library patrons across the province now have the opportunity to borrow from the 80,000-title collection of alternative-format materials at the CNIB Library, including audio, braille and descriptive video.

For people who can't read print, the news means unprecedented access to a broad collection of accessible materials - books, magazines and newspapers - through their local library.

NCPL is partnering with CNIB to offer Daisy Reader Players and CDs for the Daisy Reader to those with a visual, physical or learning disability that prevents someone from reading regular print. Staff will be able to register a patron or assist a patron with a disability for access to the CNIB library with online access to audio books, CNIB catalogue and newspapers, magazines and databases. Visit the CNIB website for more information on CNIB.

What is a Daisy Audiobook?

DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) is an international format standard developed by libraries for the blind. DAISY audiobooks have superior sound quality and functionality compared to other audio formats. Special features include chapter, paragraph, phrase and word navigation, bookmarking, skimming, sleep modes and reading speed control. DAISY titles fit on a single compact disc. These discs are meant to be played in special DAISY-compatible machines such as Victor Readers.Because of their special formatting, DAISY discs cannot be played on standard CD players unless those players are MP3-compatible. If your CD player was manufactured in the last five years, there's a good chance it is MP3-compatible and will also play DAISY CD.
