It is a confusing line in a sense. Of course God does know every condition of the hearts of men, and surely His work of Regeneration is not dependent upon emotional responses from us.

But the meaning of Ryle is simply that God’s “delays” in regards to our experience of Conversion is due to insincerity – not a full heart trust of faith. So when Ryle speaks of God delaying an answer, he says, it is for wise reasons and to try the man for earnestness.

This line confuses me:

“If he delays an answer, it is only for wise reasons, and to try if you are in earnest.”

Why would God wait to see if a person is in earnest? Doesn’t He know already?

Tomorrow I will preside at a funeral for Betty D. Betty is a member of my church; for the last five years she suffered from terminal breast cancer. One of the texts that Betty’s family and I chose for the funeral is 2 Timothy 4:7-8. This morning I began working on the sermon. Cool story bro. I’ve been looking for a way to describe this very problem to my church leadership. I somehow knew there was something wrong, for quite a number of years. Only recently did I fully understand it. To be honest it was rather revolting at first, the notion that this is the state of affairs, but the truth always wins. I, perhaps unwisely, plainly made my discoveries known to leaders in my church and I’ve been challenged to prove it step by step through scripture. I remember scripture from the heart, not from the brain, and I’m not good at writing, I don’t have the same talent you do, but that’s how it’s supposed to be, isn’t it :) Reading your post has helped clarify my own head-thinking so that I can relate better to the leaders in my church. Thanks for sharing, thanks a bunch.

we sang this song when i was around fifteen years old at word of life camp in schroon lake new york. It was the first time I had heard it. We also sang another song”though shadows deepen and my heart breaks i’ll never questiion the way he leads this side of heaven we know in part i’ll never question a broken heart. i am in my sixties now and i still remember the words to some of the verses. they really stuck with me.

JM,

In your (as well as many others around the web) indictment of the “sinner’s prayer” – I read many good points about context and the examination of fruit, but I have yet to find a general consensus on what we can do as ministers to best adjust course and continue to be used by God to convert and save souls? (and yes, I don’t mean we are doing the saving, I merely mean executing the Great Commission)

Are you saying we no longer should give an opportunity to the lost to verbalize or flesh out their conviction and encourage it’s progression into salvation? (Again, I’m not saying this means earning salvation, but to be a tool of God to bring about a decision of faith)

If someone feels the conviction of their sin and decides Jesus is the way, but dies before they get baptized (I’ve read many who think baptism is an essential part of salvation) – in your mind do they miss out on eternal life with God?

I have always had a healthy skepticism against those who recite a prayer and go on living like the nothing happened. They obviously aren’t a new creation. Your statement about those who go unchanged will face God’s wrath…totally on board with you.

But please tell me how someone, after feeling genuine conviction from the Holy Spirit during a sermon or study, who with all their heart prays something like: “Jesus, I know I’m a sinner and I need you! Please be the Lord of my life. Help me to live for you. I don’t want to burn in hell – I want to be with you forever” – hasn’t just passed from darkness to light and become a Christian?

Yes, we can with some certainly, discern the authenticity of their faith by their subsequent works. But how can we blanket-condemn a moment of acceptance if a person really believes the essential parts of Christianity?

Listen, I’m not trying to prove you wrong. I’m always willing to “examine everything and hold on to the good”. I know that not everyone who recites a version of “The Sinner’s Prayer” actually means it. But I’m not going to let that fact necessarily and automatically lead me to totally abolish every type of salvation prayer presentation to the lost. I said it when I was 18. I meant it. I let it change my life. And now I know that I know…that I know…that my salvation is in Christ. To me, that’s enough to force me to challenge your agreement that “the sinners prayer has sent millions to hell”. The only thing that can send us to hell is refusing to believe what that prayer really means.

First we need to stay filled with the spirit,if we start to lust or any kind of sin ,we will begin to lose spirit, if we repent ,God will again fill us with the Holy Spirit. Staying yielded or submitted to the leading of the Holy Spirit is the key to overcoming sin.

I Praise God that is by grace and grace alone that I am saved, Such a peace to know that God saved not because of anything I did or choose but that he choose me. 1 John 4:19 We love, because He first loved us. God does the saving not man, man had no part in it, Everyone is born Arminians but you have to look at the bible as a whole who does the saving.

The only version of this hymn I have heard is Todd Agnews, on his cd Need. It is wonderful! I love that he records old hymns like this. Another hymn he does is that I love is “Glorious Day” on his Better Questions cd.
