One of the most difficult things for us is to die to self, valuing self, loving self, and living for Christ, true valuing of the Lord and loving Him. But it is the Son of Man who said that unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies it remains alone, but if it dies, it will bear much fruit.

May it be so with us, that the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering.

Have you received your private word from Father, in person — “All I (He) has is thine?” Very few are willing to give their all, I mean their all in order to accomplish this blessing.

I would love to give more, but there is not a close enough contact for such communication with each other.

Yeah.. unfortunately, hymns in general aren’t popular these days. Christian music has gone from expressing the depths of soul longings to wishy-washy repetitive songs that are surface level. Music often reflects the culture… we are not in an age of thinkers anymore. Gone are the days where the smallest child is expected to be able to sit through a 2 hour sermon or memorize catechism. Back in college, I had a pop culture class. We used the book “Amusing Ourselves to Death” by Neil Postman. Somehow worship came into the discussion and I tried to make the argument that the human brain is the same — it’s our expectations and formed habits that have not. Listening to lengthy sermons and reading books by theologians are not methods that “don’t work anymore” because they are “out-dated” — we have the expectation that the TV generation CAN’T relate to that or are even INCAPABLE of relating. I think the capability is there… it’s the expectation that is not. How important godly rearing of children is.

Her hymns don’t seem to be that popular these days, even amongst reformed congregations. But even from the few that are a bit well known, I can see how much she loved the Lord. Hymns are always such a rebuke to me. They often make me pray, “Oh to know God more, to write such praise to Him like these.”

Thanks.. I knew her name seemed familiar but I couldn’t place it. Unfortunately, our hymnal does not have many of her hymns. (We use Trinity)

But perhaps info on Anne Steele would be helpful:

Born: May 1716, Broughton, Hampshire, England.
Died: November 11, 1778, Broughton, Hampshire, England.
Buried: Broughton, Hampshire, England.
Pseudonym: Theodosia.

Anne was the daughter of William Steele, a timber merchant who was also a lay preacher at the Baptist church in Broughton. She lost her mother at age 3. At age 19, a severe hip injury made her a lifelong invalid. At age 21, her fiancé drowned the day before they were to be married. From this series of tragedies rose 144 hymns and 34 versified Psalms, which were enormously popular. Her main work was Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional (1760). When Trinity Church in Boston, Massachusetts (where Phillips Brooks later became rector) published its hymnal in 1808, 59 of its 144 hymns were from the pen of Anne Steele. She preferred to remain anonymous, though, writing under a pen name. Her tombstone carried the following words:

Silent the lyre, and dumb the tuneful tongue,
That sung on earth her great Redeemer’s praise;
But now in Heaven she joins the angelic song,
In more harmonious, more exalted lays.

Amen. Ever since I was given a copy of Valley of Vision in 2006, I have often used it in my devotions. They have been such a blessing to my soul. Many of the prayers are also a rebuke for I do not pray…do not mourn over sin…do not beseech the throne of grace as I ought.
“If I backslide, let me like Peter weep bitterly and return to him;”

That is a wonderful song!! I learned it many years ago and it just started ringing in my head. So glad to find it. It is more and more meaningful in the later years of life is what I find.

It is a confusing line in a sense. Of course God does know every condition of the hearts of men, and surely His work of Regeneration is not dependent upon emotional responses from us.

But the meaning of Ryle is simply that God’s “delays” in regards to our experience of Conversion is due to insincerity – not a full heart trust of faith. So when Ryle speaks of God delaying an answer, he says, it is for wise reasons and to try the man for earnestness.

This line confuses me:

“If he delays an answer, it is only for wise reasons, and to try if you are in earnest.”

Why would God wait to see if a person is in earnest? Doesn’t He know already?

Tomorrow I will preside at a funeral for Betty D. Betty is a member of my church; for the last five years she suffered from terminal breast cancer. One of the texts that Betty’s family and I chose for the funeral is 2 Timothy 4:7-8. This morning I began working on the sermon. Cool story bro. I’ve been looking for a way to describe this very problem to my church leadership. I somehow knew there was something wrong, for quite a number of years. Only recently did I fully understand it. To be honest it was rather revolting at first, the notion that this is the state of affairs, but the truth always wins. I, perhaps unwisely, plainly made my discoveries known to leaders in my church and I’ve been challenged to prove it step by step through scripture. I remember scripture from the heart, not from the brain, and I’m not good at writing, I don’t have the same talent you do, but that’s how it’s supposed to be, isn’t it :) Reading your post has helped clarify my own head-thinking so that I can relate better to the leaders in my church. Thanks for sharing, thanks a bunch.
