My vision as a Psychological coach

Read our students vision about Coaching Psychology. Ci-attached some feedback from our students who study for a Pre-Doctoral Seminar at Bar Illan University recognized by International Society for Coaching Psychology and academically validated by the university. The program is to prepare the students for advanced studies in Coaching Psychology and to provide them with a certificate of the university and CPA as qualified coaches in Coaching psychology:

Ortal Nachmias

I think this program is practical supported by an amazing psychological model which certainly generates meaningful changes in the life of people. I come from the world of law so coaching psychology field was new to me. During the course I typed everything Prof. Levy said and when I reviewed the material during the practicum everything became very clear. Prof. Levy gave many examples from practice and explained everything in detail and very clearly. I can say that undoubtedly in both, theory and in practice, I feel prepared to begin a new career in the field of Coaching Psychology.

The practicum and supervision were excellent, I learned very fast how to manage and how to use the theoretical material and apply it into practice with my coaches. The studying group was multicultural of interesting people coming from different backgrounds which created a spicy and interesting dialogue which enriched me personally and opened the horizons of my feelings and thinking.

Last Saturday I met on of my practicum coachees that finished her coaching two months ago and she said to me: “I want to tell you that even though we have completed the coaching the positive changes are still going on inside myself. I am so glad that you have been part of it. I really feel like I went through a tremendous process with myself. “

For me, it is enough that I changed the life of one person as if I changed the whole world.

Thank you Arnon for thinking out of the box and bringing in someone without a background in coaching Psychology granting me with the possibility of beginning a new path and destination in my life.

Dov Peleg

This is a very unique program that opens a window into the internal world of human beings. The material was very interesting, compatible with a humanistic worldview. To me it was very enriching and provided me with the ability to understand much better human behaviors. The course and its contents are of universal meanings. This means that beyond cultures and boundaries anyone with a genuine interest in human nature should take this course. The course has all the elements that allow those who want to become successful life coaches by a coaching psychology perspective. I learned how to guide people toward life goals, and self actualization and to successfully deal with the challenges of their lives and of those around them.

The program introduced me to life dilemmas, success-blocking life paradigms, and clarified major theories of psychology and other sciences in the right dose, for the purpose of understanding the internal processes that pass on human beings. The practical exercises were very good, very important and should be extended to be given more room and time in the next programs. The group training provided me with very valuable insights and I learned a lot about myself from the group processes. Also on this issue in my opinion there is room to expand and deepen the group process and to deepen insights. The course allowed me to conceptualize phenomena and experiences from many years of my life and career and understand it through different theoretical models.

The program was composed of people who come from different places, cultures and life experiences and was directed by a professor endowed with extremely high personal and professional skills which greatly enriched the learning experience and enabled diverse perspectives on life experiences.

My conclusion is that Coaching Psychology, as studied in the present program, although its complexity is very focused, short-term and practical. It unleashes inner strengths in the coachees enabling to define their deeply concealed vision and to change their life in a powerful and meaningful way.

The program was very enjoyable and I am grateful for the opportunity to be among the students of Prof. Arnon Levy

The Existential Coaching Psychology programme at Bar Illan Universiity and the and the developmental complex system model allowed me to get most practical, powerful tools to generate change within the coachee in a short period.

The Existential Coaching Psychology programme can help anyone who wants to change and help others to believe in their abilities and improve their situation in life, and thus increase their awareness to develop and fulfill themselves, and realize goals and aspirations for better and happier life.
The program was a challenging and fascinating experience for me as a coach. It helped me to pass personal empowerment, and practical and effective tools for internal learning and for creating change, awareness and acceptance of meaningful life and to help other people personally and professionally and for that I thank Prof. Arnon Levy The programme’s academic director.

I have encountered Coaching Psychology rather by chance, and was immediately intrigued by the possibilities it opens up. Daily living and the demands imposed by the routine of life, usually doesn’t leave a lot of extra time to contemplate and look at the challenges ahead of us. Coaching Psychology enables me to look at life’s challenges from a broader prospective, and to find out my vision of things. Articulating the vision is by itself a way to control and lead my life the way I want them to move, and not to be lead by circumstances. Looking from a perspective at my life, and the lives of the people I care about, is the finest challenge of a coache. I perceive it both as a skill and as a gift I was given through Coaching Psychology. Once you can look at your life goals from a wider perspective, and form your own vision, you can help others form their own vision. I see Coaching Psychology as an immensely potent tool to change people and their way of thinking about life. It allows human beings to take an active part in forming their own lives, and being a part of that change, facilitating it, is a great privilege for me.

Aviva Friedman

I wished since a long time to study and to expertise in an integrative psychological approach combining theoretical knowledge with extensive practical tools. I work in various fields of psychology for three decades and I witness to great changes have taken place in this areas. Today people who turn to Psychological help they do not necessarily have a mental disorders or difficulties functioning. Sometimes they are confused they have times of crisis or change. People need nowadays an expert listening and short term solutions. Currently, the era, in which we live, almost every person has to face, at least once or twice in his lifecycle, with fundamental questions about the extent to which he is happy? Does he self-fulfills his life? Is the practice where he works really suits his talents? Do the old psychological methods have answers to these questions? Coaching Psychology is an approach that incorporates all my needs. On one hand, a deep understanding of the old and new psychological theories, on the other hand the ability to implement fast , powerful and effective tools to solve human difficulties. Unlike regular coaching, in Psychological Coaching the coach has an important and active role. He is not a silent listener..Actively and skillfully able to help the trainee to discover his vast inner self knowledge to solve his own questions. I presume that within a decade will be a change of the existing psychological approach. The clinical psychology will applied only for people who suffer from mental diseases or mental disorders while most people will prefer to be treated by Psychological Coaching approach which helps in Here and Now and in accordance to the coachee’s actual life cycle. I highly recommend studying Psychological Coaching to anyone who sees his future in one of the psychological therapy fields..

I would like to share with you an extraordinary experience , significant and empowering . Let’s begin with the fact that I came to these studies at the age 41 , and for good reasons. Coaching psychology is a fascinating field and creative for me and therefore incorporates the mind, and the spirit. Arrived out of curiosity and a strong intuition, I became enriched with new insights and tools, to see different angles and new interpretations for life. I nurtured my thinking outside the box, and became more communicative with my inner self and with others. I want to thank Prof. Levy and the professional staff in the program, Bravo !

Prof. Arnon Levy – Dean of Studies

Coaching is defined by International Coach Federation – the largest coach organization as: “a partnership between the coach and the coachee stimulating thinking and creative processes to maximize personal and professional potentials”.

The coaching profession has enjoyed during its 20 years of existence, a phenomenal success. It could be said that life coaching has an undeniable footprint at the 21st century’s culture; In a survey quoted in “Psychology Today” (1) it was found that coaching had been the second rapidly growing after the high tec. professions.

The great success of coaching derives from the fact that it is compatible with the 21st century Zeitgeist- The spirit of time. It responds to modern man’s search for individuation and self-actualization all together in focused and efficient ways to achieve these goals.

Let us review the history of coaching in a nutshell:
It’s is quite consensual that Thomas Leonard, a business consultant, as the founder of coaching, following his insights in the 1974 Thimoty Gallwey’s book: “The Inner Game of Tennis” which incorporated ideas from the field of psychology, the ideology of the human potential, and knowledge in sports coaching.
Thomas Leonard founded Coach University and the first coaching community around 1992, and ever since, the coaching field began to expand exponentially.

Principles of operation of the coach, as defined by the ICF global organization of coaching:
1. The coach sees in the coachee a person responsible and committed to their aspirations.
2. The coach will motivate the coachee to make himself solutions and strategies to achieve his dream.
3. The coach will motivate the client to self-discovery.
4. The coach will help clarify things and will partner in the venture of reaching the customer’s goal.

There are quite a few approaches to coaching but in all of them there is a consensus that the success of the coaching process depends on the following conditions:
1. Coaching is a rational process of achieving goals
2. Coaching takes place in an agreed setting. The setting functions in a similar way to setting in psychotherapy, however it is more flexible ( the coaching is not performed in the clinic, as with psychotherapy; Coaching can be performed over the phone, in video, in a park or a cafe).
3. The coach/coachee relationship is of great importance (similar to the transference between therapist / patient but less deep and less complex)
4. The coachee shares responsibility for the success of the coaching process together with the coach.

What is the distinction of Coaching Psychology approach from life coaching ?

Coaching is a successful profession but not a scientific discipline . Consequently it does not have clear boundaries. Googling “life coaching” we may find: “spiritual coaching”, “yoga-coaching”, “cooking-coaching” or “sex-coaching”.

The lack of clear boundaries makes us sometimes believe that everything is possible in coaching .

On the other hand, if everything is possible, lack of boundaries may lead to collapse. The first signs of decline are already here in the ambivalent attitude towards coaching by the large public and by within the academy.

One of our goals is to contribute to the creation of a new, evidence based, multidisciplinary field rooted in social and human sciences methodology. Existential coaching psychology derives its knowledge from 100 years of psychological science from a humanistic/existential outlook.

A scientific approach does not mean hard science like physics but a discipline complying with scientific and academic norms and standards.

What are scientific standards ?

In epistemology of science it is common to distinguish between three main states in the development of scientific knowledge. Let us see from the top to the bottom:

Standard Science. We expect standard scientific discipline to be consistent with the mainstream of its disciplinary knowledge, to be based upon objective observation and research, to have predictive generalization ability, to be open to change and to self- criticism

Proto – science. Proto science is usually a state of the science in the making. Proto – Science offers a reasonable explanation for the body of knowledge in which it is engaged. Proto science is open to self-criticism and is not in contradiction to the dominant scientific paradigms.

Proto Science is not supported by objective observation and research. Its predictive and generalization abilities are insufficient and its research methodologies are not sufficiently valid, and reliable.

Pseudo – science – Pseudo – science, is a collection of ideas , beliefs, practices and methodologies presented as a science . Pseudo – science research methodology lack reliable methodology and can not be examined experimentally .

Pseudo Science has no boundaries with other disciplines and does not meet basic requirements of scientific methodologies such as: reference to sources, precise quotation of sources, reconstruction of experiments, and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Supporters of pseudo – science frequently use demagogic persuasion means such as half-truths and meaningless technical jargon, to prove their “theories”.

What is scientific knowledge in a nutshell ?

Science does not discover the “Truth”. Science is a methodology and perspective about the world which is the most valid and reliable at a given moment.

Proto – Science is a field aspiring to be scientific ,

Pseudo – science is a field disguising as science.

Future prospectives for coaching

The coaching profession success derives from being adapted to the zeitgeist – the spirit of our time and from using powerful change-generating tools. However since it is not a scientific discipline it risks to become a profession based upon pseudo – scientific assumptions. Already today attitudes towards coaching in the large public and within the academy are of ambivalence and distrust. Being construed upon a body of knowledge eclectic, inconsistent and without clear boundaries it risks to become a fad as a new-age practice.

The remedy: creating a scientific discipline of coaching psychology.

We in International Society for Coaching Psychology work, together with other academic professionals in Coaching Psychology, to create a an academic discipline of Coaching Psychology based upon psychological and human sciences knowledge. Many of us want to integrate this approach in a multidisciplinary perspective.

Coaching Psychology Academy perspective is to integrate coaching Psychology with a humanistic/existential approach which are according to our view in the roots of the coaching profession.

Aims

The PhD. Programs (in Coaching Psychology, Existential Coaching Psychology, in Clinical Psychology, and in Leadership for advanced practice) has been developed to provide the opportunity for Coaches to undertake a Doctorate Program focused upon, and researching into, their own practice.

The candidate chooses their own specialist area of study and undertakes research which not only meets all the criteria for Doctorate level work but also has the potential to make an impact upon the student’s own practice, that of their peers and their profession.

It is an opportunity for coaches interested in research at this level to work on an area of direct impact upon practice with the support and advice of researchers from a range of disciplines.

Our new programmes:

Phd in Professional Studies for leadership from a coaching psychology or clinical psychology perspectives are designed for advanced practitioners to study and apply leadership within the organisational/professional context and the larger society. The PhD research is defined by the student’s particular work context and area of activity and interest. This may be located within a profession or sector, or may be more individual in nature. Our approach is interdisciplinary with a psychological “spinal cord”. The doctoral student would investigate the management and development of leadership and human behavior associated with leadership. Our student/researcher would study coaching skills associated with leadership, and the creation of influence to generate desired social change.

Above all, our student would undertake critical reflections on a doctoral level concerned with knowledge that is generated and used in his career and his life within society which are of a primary concern for himself. At the end of the programme candidates submit a research report and take part in an oral examination by video on their research. With the successful completion of the examination you could achieve a doctorate from a leading academic institution on a unique research that could empower your life in most personal and social aspects. .

How is it studied?

You can enroll throughout the year at a time appropriate for you and your organisation but induction days occur in early October and February. An academic advisor will be available to you throughout your period of study and a specialists will be assigned to you in the role of consultant allowing you to draw upon their expertise in your area of enquiry or methodology. You will also have resources such as handbooks and online materials as well as online seminars, and lectures to enhance your learning journey .

What is your opportunity in our programme ? You are mentored and encouraged to develop a unique research project of leadership at the current stage of your career based upon advanced coaching psychology knowledge that would enable you to make a significant impact in your organization and upon society.

We consider your previous learning (both formal courses and informal learning from experience) to be recognised for its contribution to the development of practice and ascribed academic credit to be used within the programme.

  Candidates

The PhD in leadership is for the advanced practitioner who is probably working in a senior managerial position. The research project is undertaken within practice making it ideal for those wishing to imprint a significant, high level impact within their organisations and within the professional community and society using the rapidly developing concepts and tools of coaching psychology.

Approach

You will be assigned an Advisor who will be available to you throughout your Program. The Program includes one-to-one coaching, a virtual learning environment, guided reading and written submissions.

The Program Structure provides a map of the stages in the program. Throughout each of these you will be supported with detailed step-by-step manuals, workshops and tutorials, a virtual learning environment and advice from an Advisor and research consultant(s) identified as a specialist in the chosen area of study.

Programme Outcomes

These will be specific to the candidate and driven by their choice of research.

What support will be provided?

Your resources have been designed for the distance learner and come in four forms to suit most personal learning styles.

• A designated and qualified Academic Advisor and Coach who is available to you on-line or through individual telephone/webcam tutorials. Throughout your Program you will be given feedback on all your work prior to submission so you can be confident you are progressing and achieving the required standard.

• Once you have fully identified your research project you will also be assigned a research consultant (an expert in the field who may well be working in another institution or University) who will be available to you throughout your project work.

• Detailed manual/workbooks for each module.

• Access to a virtual learning environment where you can access background resources such as coaching bibliographies and reflection manuals and where you can discuss and develop your submission with the help of your peers.
