The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today it has awarded a total of $22,800,000 to 24 state health departments, as well as six universities, and one American Indian tribe to increase colorectal screening. The grants, awarded in a competitive process, are designed to increase colorectal (colon) cancer screening rates among men and women aged 50 to 75 years.

Many Americans use dietary supplements as part of their daily health regimen. In fact, a recent national survey found that in 2012, natural products (nonvitamin, nonmineral dietary supplements) were the most frequently used complementary health approach among adults and children. Almost 18 percent of adults and about 5 percent of children use natural products.

While there has been research that suggests health benefits of some dietary supplements, there is also a concern about the safety of some products, including the potential for interactions with drugs.

On April 30, 2015, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH) was notified by a local health department of an elevated blood lead level (BLL) in a female patient aged 64 years. All Wisconsin laboratories are required to provide BLL testing results performed on any state resident to WDPH, and WDPH and local health departments are statutorily mandated to investigate any single BLL ≥20 µg/dL or BLLs that are persistently ≥15 µg/dL.
