Originally crude when invented in the early 80’s, the powered parachute has become the ultimate personal flying machine. The powered parachute is also the most affordable powered aircraft available.

Man’s desire to fly is as old as man himself. This desire has led us to the construction of planes, rockets, helicopters and so on. However for some people wishing to really explore the intimate side of flying these things fall short. Planes and helicopters simply lack the zest of souring above treetops and lakes like a bird on a wing. To fullfil this desire you need look no further than powered parachutes.

The powered parachute is a half parachute, half glider motorized flying wing. Originally crude when invented in the early 80’s, the powered parachute has become the ultimate personal flying machine. The powered parachute is also the most affordable powered aircraft available. A new single seat version will cost you below $10,000. Not only being affordable, a powered parachute, when not in use, is small enough to fit in your garage.

What owner of a helicopter or plane can claim these things? Not only cheap to buy and maintain, a powered parachute is simple to operate. In the United States you don’t even need an operator’s license. An average person can learn the basics to flying these wonderful machines in an afternoon. Most people have their first solo flight after only 5 days of instructions. With a powered parachute there is no danger of spins and stalls so you can cruise along simply enjoying the views.

Using powered parachutes

The restrictions that do exist for powered parachutes are fairly common sense. Don’t fly your powered parachute in strong winds or at night. Other than this the sky is basically yours. All these great features have made the powered parachute popular with many different people and for a variety of reasons.

To begin with, they make an excellent aircraft for photographing. Many pictures of shining lakes and majestic mountains were taken from powered parachutes. Their slow speed and 360 degree view make them perfect photography platforms. Their cheap initial and maintenance cost make them a popular selection among law enforcement and other government agencies.

To operate a helicopter for a search and rescue operation is extremely expensive. To operate a powered parachute is extremely cheap. When the space shuttle disintegrated upon re-entry the government called upon the powered parachute to search hundreds of miles for debri recovery.

To have conducted this search with helicopters would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. All these reasons have made the powered parachute one of the best flying machines ever invented.

Free parachute jumps

The Meningitis Research Foundation is seeking adrenaline junkies in Devon to jump in their summer skydiving fundraiser.

Stepping out of a plane at 10,000 feet, you will freefall at an exhilarating 120mph for 5,000 feet before pulling the ripcord and gliding gently back to earth.

This experience of a lifetime is free: simply raise the required sponsorship money – minimum £395 – and you’ll have the satisfaction of completing a parachute jump and contributing to the fight against meningitis and septicaemia.

The skydiving is taking place at a dedicated parachute jumping facility in Honiton, with several courses available to suit all levels of experience, from novices to those with parachuting experience.

Meningitis and septicaemia – the blood poisoning form of the disease – affect around 3,000 people every year in the UK, killing 10% of sufferers and leaving many more with after-effects that could be as severe as brain damage, deafness and amputations. The money raised will help the charity in its work of funding research, promoting education and awareness, and helping individuals and families affected by these devastating diseases.

How to keep your parachute properly

After you have gone for skydiving, you want to take care of your parachute and store it so that it stays safe and is ready for the next time you want to use it. There is a proper way to do this to make sure that your parachute doesn't become damaged.

1 The first thing you will want to do is to deflate the parachute. Place the chute on an area that is dry and make sure that there isn't any more air in it.

Turn the chute to one of it's sides, and fold the tip of the chute towards chute's inside. Continue with the folding in the same way so that the strings of the chute are neatly overlapping.

2. Use a thick cord to tie the parachute's strings, and place them gently on the cloth of the parachute. Continue with the folding of the parachute until you have a small package and place it in a bag that is odor free.

3. Make sure that your parachute is stored in an area that doesn't have any sunlight but has a flow of air that is steady. The bag should be kept away from water, oil and any acidic solutions.

Some other things to remember:
Make sure that the tension is kept on your parachute's lines when it is stored, pulling them gently so that they form a line before tying them up.

If your parachute is exceptionally large, don't store it yourself. Ask a professional to help.
If you stuff your parachute into a bag without folding it, you risk damaging it.

So take the time to fold it and store it properly.

Type of Parachute

In short, it makes the dropping of an item, a person or equipment vertically or diagonally slower by reducing the amount of dragging force while maintaining a balance so that the item would remain safe until it reaches the ground. Early physicists have made use of this principle and newer develops in parachuting technology led to the creation of various types of parachutes.

Early types of parachutes

Parasol type- Though not strictly called parachutes, the parasols were commonly used by performers in China to create a slow falling effect onstage.

Conical parachute – Possibly the earliest form of parachute is the conical shaped-parachute which appeared during 1470s in Italy preceding the design conceptualized by Leonardo da Vinci. As an escape device, this type of parachute was intended to allow people to get safely on the ground from burning buildings. However, there are no written records whether this parachute was ever used for that purpose.

Pyramid Parachute – Another design by Leonardo da Vinci, this parachute was conceptualized in Milan during the early part of 1480. It was a canopy that is supported by light wood held by a square bottom frame.

Pack-style parachute – This is the predecessor of all parachutes that are stored in casings these days.

Round parachutes – A basic drag device, round parachute is used in various settings like medical missions, cargo applications and military operations. While being described commonly as round in shape, the parachute actually resembles a dome or a jellyfish. This has been among the most popular type however; present-day parachutists don’t normally use this kind of parachute.

The earliest round parachutes were circulars with flat surfaces that made them unstable, thus causing a number of deaths and injuries on parachutists. To add more stability, military round parachutes were made parabolic or conical in shape.

There are two types of round parachutes - steerable and non-steerable. Like ram-air parachutes, non-steerable parachutes can't be maneuvered to intended direction thus this type glides only to the direction of the wind lending no control to the parachutists. However, steering is provided through cutting large holes in the edges giving relatively partial forward speed.

Square parachutes – The cruciform design helps reduce oscillation. It is commonly used today by sport skydivers.

Ram-air parachutes – For better control of speed and direction, ram-air parachutes allow the canopies to self-inflate. Like standard paragliders, ram-air parachutes are designed to hold, spread and lessen the tension of parachute deployment on terminal velocity.

Ribbon/Ring Parachute – Specifically designed for supersonic speeds where ordinary parachutes would break down, this type often has a hole in the middle of the canopy to lessen the pressure as the parachute reaches the ground.

On some designs, the ring of the canopy is broken into a number of ribbons that are connected by ropes so as to allow more air to pass. The leaks in between the ribbons will diminish the pressure on the parachute so that breaking or shredding of the canopy is prevented.

These various types of parachutes are made according to the use they have and some are according to the technology the inventors had during their time.

Leonardo da Vinci-designed parachute works

PAYERNE, Switzerland (AFP) - A 36-year-old Swiss amateur parachutist made a successful 650-metre (2,130-foot) drop Saturday using a replica of a parachute designed more than 500 years ago by Leonardo da Vinci.

"I came down... smack in the middle of the tarmac at Payerne military airport," said Olivier Vietti-Teppa. "A perfect jump."

Vietti-Teppa is the first person to have made it safely to the ground with the Leonardo model.
In 2000, Britain's Adrian Nicholas tried it but had to pull the ripcord on a modern backup parachute to complete his descent safely.

Vietti-Teppa jumped from a hovering helicopter and the Leonardo parachute opened at 600 metres, he reported.

The parachute he used was made using modern fabric along lines designed by the Renaissance genius. The specifications were found in a text dating from 1485.

The parachute consists of four equilateral triangles, seven metres on each side, made of parachute fabric, Vietti-Teppa explained.

The base of the pyramid is a square of mosquito net, which enables the parachute to open. A wooden frame originally conceived by da Vinci was not used on the model in action on Saturday.
One drawback: it is impossible to manoeuvre or steer the Leonardo parachute. "You come down at the whim of the wind," said Vietti-Teppa, who carried out advance tests using a scale dummy model launched from a remote-controlled model helicopter.

Iran banned from DSA 2008

A diplomatic row almost marred a premier global event when Iran was "evicted" as an exhibitor at the Putra World Trade Centre.

Word was abuzz on the second day of the 11th Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2008 exhibition and conference on Tuesday when the Iranian pavilion, housing nine companies, was abruptly sealed off by the organisers.

Visitors, exhibitors and officials were taken aback when workmen built what some diplomats called a "Berlin Wall" around the Iranian pavilion in Hall Number 6.

Initially, it was thought that the exhibitors from Iran had failed to settle outstanding fees owed to organisers DSA Exhibition and Conference Sdn Bhd.

By noon on Tuesday, it became apparent that Iran were told to "close shop" after protests from the United States, citing United Nations sanctions against it last October over Teheran's controversial nuclear programme.

It is learnt that officials of the US embassy had approached the organisers, the ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs, and several western participating countries to voice its concerns, threatening to pull out if its demands were not met.

The US is one of the largest exhibitors at DSA 2008 with 26 companies under the Association of the United States Army pavilion.
