It is being reported that Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford will be going to get another opinion on his injured left elbow from Dr. James Andrews. Sox skipper Bobby Valentine said Tuesday night that Crawford would be getting a second opinion. Today, Buster Olney of ESPN reported today that Dr. Andrews would be who Crawford will see.

Crawford is on the disabled list recovering from surgery on his left wrist. The elbow became an issue a few weeks ago and he was checked out in Boston and found to have what the Red Sox called a “strain.”

“He’s been a little concerned about his elbow, so he’s probably going to get a second opinion,” Valentine said. “He’s feeling so good with his hitting and his wrist right now that he doesn’t want to have any setbacks.”

Crawford has been playing in extended spring training games in Florida, but only as the DH.

Crawford, 30, was on the disabled list from June 18 to July 18 last season. The wrist surgery was in January, his condition flaring up when he started to hit. Crawford initially made speedy progress in spring training before aggravating the wrist and being shut down for 10 days.

Crawford is in the second year of a seven-year, $142 million contract. He had the worst season of his career in 2011, hitting .255/.289/.405 with only 18 stolen bases.

At the end of spring training, the Red Sox hoped that Crawford would return sometime in May. That is growing increasingly unlikely.

With Iglesias being optioned, I think it is safe to say the the opening day starter at short with be Mike Aviles. Valentine stated part of the decision to option Iglesias was to allow the young shortstop phenom to work more on the consistancy of his swing. This spring Iglesias hit .200/286/.280.

Ortiz signed a one year deal worth $14.575 million. The agreement represents the midpoint between the salary being offered by the Sox ($12.65 million) and the number being sought by Ortiz ($16.5 milion). News of the agreement was first reported by Buster Olney of ESPN (via twitter).

The agreement comes just a few hours before the two parties were scheduled to present arguments in an arbitration hearing at 2 p.m. With the agreement, the Sox have now gone 10 straight years without an arbitration hearing.

Ortiz made $12.5 million last year after the Sox exercised a team option for the 2011 season, a year in which he hit .309 with a .398 OBP, a .554 slugging mark, a .953 OPS, 29 homers and 96 RBI. He was named to the American League All-Star team and was named the winner of the Silver Slugger Award as the top DH in baseball in 2011, in the process garnering bonuses that pushed his earnings for 2011 up to $12.65 million.

Ortiz’s salary for the coming season is the highest in baseball history for a designated hitter.

According to the Red Sox front offices, it is being reported that Red Sox outfielder, Carl Crawrord had surgery on his left wrist done today in Arizona by Dr. Donald Sheridan. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington stated that Crawford should be able to recover and return for the bulk of this season. Back in 2008, Sheridan operated on Crawford to fix a tendon issue on his right hand.

Crawford felt soreness when he started his offseason hitting workouts around Jan. 1. He had an MRI done that showed cartilage damage and arthroscopic surgery was recommended. Crawford has had wrist issues in the past but the discomfort had always passed. Having such pain at this time of the year was a red flag. Cherington did not rule Crawford being eligible for Opening Day. But it sounds like he could miss the early part of the season. Crawford is expected to be ready to resume baseball activities at some point during spring training.

“We’re not going to put a timeline on his recovery,” Cherington said. “But we’re optimistic Carl will be progressing in baseball activities as we get into spring training and be in a position to be active and our left fielder in our lineup for the bulk of the regular season.”

According to multiple sources around Major League, the Red Sox have agreed to terms with free agent starting pitcher Aaron Cook on a minor league deal, pending a physical. The 32-year-old right-hander is expected to compete for one of the final spots in the Sox’ rotation in 2012. If he is summoned to the big leagues under the contract, he would receive a prorated $1.5 million salary.

Cook, who is coming off a three-year, $29.5 million deal with the Rockies, appeared in 18 games in ’11, making 17 starts. He finished the year going 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA. Cook’s best season came in 2008 when he went 16-9 with a 3.96 in 32 starts, earning an berth on the National League All-Star team.

Cook suffered a setback in ’11 when he broke his right index finger in spring training, not allowing him to pitch until June 8 while seemingly affecting his command for much of the year. He is also close to new Red Sox pitching coach Bob McClure, who previously worked in the Colorado organization.

FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal was first to report the agreement and this article was supplied by WEEI.com.

As a result, a second procedure proved necessary on Dec. 30. The Boston Globe was the first to break wind of the second procedure.

Jenks, 30, missed most of 2011 in the first season of his two-year, $12 million deal he signed last December.Injuries limited the former White Sox closer to 19 appearances in 2011, in which he forged a 6.32 ERA while striking out 17 and walking 13 in 15 2/3 innings. In addition to multiple DL stints for his back, Jenks saw his season come to an end when it was discovered that he was suffering a pulmonary embolism, a condition whose treatment delayed his initial back surgery until December.
