The NHSA Board would like to congratulate the Student leaders from Toronto on an extremely well-prepared convention bid. The comprehensive proposal definitely exemplifies the desire of Toronto students to host the next NHSA Convention. That being said, we are very excited to announce that the NHSA Convention Spring 2012 will take place in Toronto! It will be our pleasure to be working together with the Hellenic Student Associations from Canada for this endeavor and have high hopes that this will be the best and most organized convention yet.

NHSA Convention Spring 2012 will be held in Toronto, Canada the weekend of April 27- 29th, 2012. The theme, as decided by the local organizing committee is “Hellenes on the Rise Across the Globe: Join the Movement”.

All undergraduate and graduate students of Hellenic descent from universities and colleges across North America are encouraged to attend!

Remember to check if your passport is valid. US citizens need a valid passport to cross the border into Canada.

Hellenext Initiative: Greeks Give Back competition

Through the Greeks Give Back competition, HelleNext is inviting Hellenic student associations to submit proposals for a campus or community project, for a chance to win a small grant to implement the project.

Groups that submit proposals will have an opportunity to be matched with a professional mentor who will provide guidance and feedback during the proposal development process and, if the proposal is selected, while carrying out the project. We encourage campus associations to submit a proposal, even if it is a small-scale project for the summer or next year. The more groups that submit proposals, the more opportunity everyone will have to learn from each other, and the more support we can mobilize for this competition and other youth leadership programs.

Groups that want to submit an application in the Greeks Give Back competition must submit a short statement of Intent to Apply with their project idea by January 31.

The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation will again offer $250,000 in scholarship awards to exceptional Greek-American students; applications are due on January 31, 2012- there are only less than 20 days left to submit your applications. Awards are available to all undergraduate students of Hellenic descent who meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the application.

They are offered to recognize students of high scholastic achievement and to provide support to those in financial need. Awards will be distributed in the following way:

Twenty (20) Grant Awards of $10,000 each to students that apply on the basis of financial need, and
twenty (20) Merit Awards of $2,500 each to students that apply on the basis of merit only and not financial need.

The Hellenic Student Associations of Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and Northeastern will be hosting the NHSA Convention Fall 2011 held in Boston, MA on the weekend of November 11^th-13^th.  The theme of the convention, as decided by the local organizing committee, is “Be the Agent of Change: Shape Your Future, Shape Greece, Shape the NHSA”. In the spirit of this theme, Saturday events will include three separate panel series, The Greece Dialogues: The Way Forward, The Advance of Education and Greece on the World Stage. We will be hosting student representatives from over 50 universities, more than 140 students throughout North America, and uniting them with distinguished guests, top professors and professionals from the fields of politics, academia, finance and medicine, with the goal to better understand key issues and ultimately empower students to make a positive impact on their lives and their communities.

The Alpha Omega Council is comprised of nearly 100 leading Americans of Hellenic ancestry.  Its members represent and span many generations of the Greek experience in America.  They are united to promote and encourage loyalty and patriotism to the United States, cultivate the ideals of Hellenism by supporting religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational activities, maintain positive Greek-American relations, and aid the poor and needy.  Each year the Council recognizes the achievements of individuals or groups who have excelled in their professions or fields of endeavor at its Lifetime Achievement Award Banquet and honors its late founder, Peter Agris, by presenting the Agris Memorial Scholarships to young Greek-Americans from throughout the US pursuing studies in journalism or communications.  Since its founding in 1976, the Council has raised and donated more than $1.5M to charitable causes.

We are sincerely grateful that Alpha Omega Council member George Danis will graciously sponsor the Mentorship Luncheon that aims to unite student representatives with distinguished members of Hellenic community in Boston from various fields in order to share educational and professional experiences while networking.

As many of you know, the NHSA Fall Convention 2011 is quickly approaching – the weekend of November 11th-13th! This year we invite you to Boston, Massachusetts for a weekend of panel discussions, mentorship fairs and workshops with some of the most esteemed members of the Hellenic Community in the US as well as attending social events and making friendships with your peers from universities across the nation!

Included in the ticket this year is admission to several workshops featuring prominent Greek Americans including panel discussions on Business, Economics, Education and International Affairs! Tickets also cover food and local transportation for all attending students.

If you are one of the first twenty (20) Hellenic Student Association Representatives living outside of a seven (7) hour driving radius from Boston to register before October 15th you will be eligible to receive up to $200 reimbursement* of your airline ticket (see event website www.nhsaofamerica.org/current-convention or email for more details).

We encourage you to bring friends to experience the vibe of this exciting weekend. Student attendees who do not live in the Boston area and are not the designated representative from their university will not receive travel reimbursement but will have access to a discounted cost of $100 to cover food, local transportation and their hotel stay for the weekend. The National Hellenic Student Association (NHSA) of America is expanding its initiatives and is proud to launch the “Greece Dialogues” Interview Series.

All of the members and friends of the NHSA have been deeply concerned with the economic developments back in the homeland. During the past two years, as the economic crisis was unfolding in Greece, the ‘Greek issue’ was surfacing as a mainstream debate in the news, in the lecture halls and certainly during discussions on a personal level.

Our member chapters have held numerous events on U.S. campuses with the purpose of educating their local communities about the arising economic crisis. We have held informative lectures, events and speakers to spread awareness, brainstorm the role of the youth and how we can help from abroad.The Fall 2010 Convention held at Ohio State University specifically focused in fostering a greater understanding of the anatomy of the financial situation in Greece crisis.

The “Greece Dialogues” Initiatve comes at a time when the debate about the sovereign debt turmoils in the Euro-zone are reaching their peak and effects to the worldwide financial system seem more closer than ever. We are committed to help Greece in its most difficult times since our parents or grand-parents can remember.

With a sense of responsibility given our scholarly standards and duty to our homeland, we call on our members and friends to support this initiative which aims to constructively contribute academic and professional opinions in the discussions surrounding Greece and the Euro-zone crisis.

We encourage you to read more about the Greece Dialogues Interview Series. We hope to provide our members with the best possible tools to assess the situation and participate in its solution, by taking advantage of NHSA’s unique educational assets.

The NHSA of America Board 2011-2012 invites students of Hellenic heritage studying at Universities across the U.S. to send us information of any upcoming events on their campus. We are most interested in events where one or many local Hellenic Student Associations are the host or actively involved in.

Event announcements will be posted on the NHSA website and be publicized through our social media outlets. It is best to send your message at least 3-6 weeks before so as to assure appropriate promotion. Be sure to include name of the event, date, time and location, hosting, sponsorship and contact information. Please keep the length of your message to about 200 words. Any relevant pictures (past events etc) must be sent in highest quality possible.

NHSA has elected Regional Directors for the purpose of promoting regional collaboration amongst greek, cypriot and greek- american students at Universities.

We would like to share information we received about FULBRIGHT Scholarships  for the academic years 2012-2013.

Grants are available to Greek Citizens only (academic/ researchers, artists, students and professors in secondary educations.
