NIE Short Course in Thailand

Congratulations to the participants of the first Professional Short in Nutrition in Emergencies course held in Asia as part of the NIE regional training project! The course was hosted by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, in collaboration with UCL Centre for International Health and Development, and was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from the 23rd May to the 2nd June.

Twenty-eight people from 18 different countries attended the 10-day course that covered the essentials of NIE, including assessments, food assistance, infant and young child feeding in emergencies, micronutrient interventions and emergency preparedness. As always, this intensive course culminated with an emergency simulation exercise set in the fictional country Toivoland, during which participants coped admirably with rising temperatures and government bureaucracy.

The upcoming NIE Professional Short course in Thailand on 23rd May-2nd June is now fully subscribed. Apologies if you have not been able to enrol on this course but please do check back for details of further courses, which will be posted on this site as soon as they are confirmed.

We look forward to meeting the successful applicants in Chiang Mai next month.

Applications for Thailand NIE Course

The next Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from the 23rd May to the 2nd June 2011. Places on the course are limited and we have already received a significant number of applications. We are keen to see participation from within the region and would like to encourage potential participants from Asia to apply as soon as they are able.

NIE Short Course in Uganda: Photos On-line

We are pleased to be able to share a few photographs from the recent Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies, that was hosted by Makerere University in Uganda. The course started off in Kampala with a week of classroom and exercise based learning.

We then moved the course location north to Gulu, to enable a more field-based learning experience and opportunities for practical exercises.

Various field exercises were undertaken during this period, culminating in a one-day emergency simulation exercise.

Dates Confirmed for NIE Professional Short Course in Thailand

We are pleased to confirm dates for the next Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies. The course will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from the 23rd May to the 2nd June 2011. The cost will be US$ 2,500 (including meals, accommodation and all training materials), and the course will be hosted by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre.

The new year is with us and we would like to send best wishes to all course alumni, potential applicants and everyone else associated with the NIE Regional Training Initiative.

Course applications for the upcoming Professional Short Course in Uganda are now closed. Many thanks to everyone who applied and we hope that those who were unable to gain a place on the January course one will be able to attend one in the future. We look forward to meeting all the successful applicants in Kampala later in January.

Later in the (northern hemisphere) spring, we will be holding a course together with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre in Thailand. Applications are now being accepted for this course and the final dates and further details will be confirmed shortly.

New Module on Nutrition in Emergencies Introduced in Uganda

The Makerere University School of Public Health has recently introduced a new Masters in Public Health Nutrition (MPHN). The first intake of students are now starting the second year of their course in Kampala.

As part of the Nutrition in Emergencies Regional Training Project, we have been working with the University to develop and implement a module on Nutrition in Emergencies and deliver that as part of the new MSc . Following work on curriculum and materials development the module was run for the first time in September 2010. The photo below shows some of the students hard at work during a session on programme M&E.

The MSc is primarily targeted at Ugandan students and is intended to prepare them for working in a range of roles in nutrition in the country. For more information on the School of Public Health and their courses please click here...

Beirut Hosts First Nutrition in Emergencies Short Course

The first nutrition in emergencies short course, facilitated by the NIE Regional Training Initiative, was successfully run in Beirut from 13th to 18th of September. Organised and hosted by the American University of Beirut, it attracted 17 participants from Lebanon and the region. Participants came from NGOs, UN agencies, and academia and brought a wealth of experience to share during the six days of intensive training.

The course covered a wide range of subjects and was presented in 14 modules, ranging from the causes of malnutrition through to disaster preparedness and personal professional development.

The highlight for many was the emergency simulation exercise which ran for a full day and introduced some elements of realism, with participants having to handle multiple information sources and make decisions within a tight time frame, while coping with many uncertainties.

The networking aspect of the course was very important and we hope that many of the connections that were made during the week will lead to further collaborative working and help strengthen the capacity for nutrition action with Lebanon and the wider region. The first NIE course in Lebanon will run from the 13th to the 18th September 2010. This six day pilot course will be primarily for practitioners from or working in Lebanon. Please get in touch if you would like to be considered for this course.

Apply now for Nutrition in Emergencies courses in Thailand and Uganda

Our first international short course in Nutrition in Emergencies will be run in Uganda in January 2011. Courses are designed to strengthen the capacity of a wide-range of actors to support and lead responses to protect the nutrition of populations affected by humanitarian disasters. The 12-day course costs US$ 2,500, which includes accommodation, meals, course materials and training from international experts in the sector. To apply, please download an application form from here. Send your completed application form together with a copy of your CV to the NIE training coordinator (coordinator@nietraining.net).
