ADPC Annouce Dates for the 2013 NIE Short Course

We are pleased to let you know that applications for the 2013 Professional Short Course in NIE in Thailand are now being accepted. The course will be run by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), is scheduled for the 7th to the 18th October, 2013, and will be held in Bangkok.

The course will cover key elements of NIE, including:

•    Assessments, surveys and surveillance
•    Food security and food assistance
•    Micronutrient interventions
•    Management of acute malnutrition
•    Infant and young child feeding in emergencies

It will also include more general issues such as coordination, humanitarian standards and emergency preparedness.

NIE Course in Uganda Cancelled

We are disappointed to announce that the Professional Short Course in NIE, that was due to run in Uganda in May, has had to be cancelled. Makerere University very much regret the cancellation, but were forced to take this decision due to financial considerations.

Second NIE Short Course in Thailand

Congratulations to the participants of the second Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies held in Thailand as part of the NIE Regional Training Initiative! The course was run by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, in collaboration with University College London, and was held in Bangkok from the 8th to the 19th October, 2012.

Twenty-two people, from both within and beyond the region, attended the 11-day course that covered the essentials of NIE, including assessments, food assistance, infant and young child feeding in emergencies, micronutrient interventions and emergency preparedness. The course had a regional focus and benefited from strong participation by WFP, UNICEF, and other operational organisations. Trainers and facilitators for the course came from ADPC, WFP, UNICEF, OCHA, Valid International, ENN, UCL, and elsewhere. The eleven days culminated with an emergency simulation exercise set in the fictional country Toivoland, during which participants brought together the various skills and knowledge gained during the course to tackle a nutritional crisis, compounded by conflict and government bureaucracy.

We would like to thank all the participants, organisers, and trainers who made the course a success. We will be posting more photos from the course on our facebook page.

Second NIE Short Course in Lebanon Finishes

Congratulations to the participants of the second Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies held in Lebanon as part of the NIE Regional Training Initiative! The course was run by the American University of Beirut, in collaboration with UCL Centre for International Health and Development, and was held in Beirut and at the Agricultural Research and Education Centre in the Bekaa, from the 4th to the 15th June.

Twenty-four people from 15 different countries attended the 11-day course that covered the essentials of NIE, including assessments, food assistance, infant and young child feeding in emergencies, micronutrient interventions and emergency preparedness. The course contained a regional focus and was particularly timely given the ongoing crises in neighbouring countries. The course culminated with an emergency simulation exercise set in the fictional country Toivoland, during which participants faced a range of challenges including conflict, government bureaucracy, and a deteriorating nutritional situation.

We would like to thank all the people who made the course a success. We will be posting more photos from the course on our facebook page in the next few days.

The American University of Beirut will be running a Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies from the 4th to the 15th June, 2012. The deadline for applications has now been confirmed as 20th April. However, candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible as places are offered on a rolling basis.

NIE Short Course in Thailand

The course was hosted by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, in collaboration with UCL Centre for International Health and Development, and was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from the 23rd May to the 2nd June.

Twenty-eight people from 18 different countries attended the 10-day course that covered the essentials of NIE, including assessments, food assistance, infant and young child feeding in emergencies, micronutrient interventions and emergency preparedness. As always, this intensive course culminated with an emergency simulation exercise set in the fictional country Toivoland, during which participants coped admirably with rising temperatures and government bureaucracy.

Places on the course are limited and we have already received a significant number of applications. We are keen to see participation from within the region and would like to encourage potential participants from Asia to apply as soon as they are able.

NIE Short Course in Uganda: Photos On-line

We are pleased to be able to share a few photographs from the recent Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies, that was hosted by Makerere University in Uganda. The course started off in Kampala with a week of classroom and exercise based learning.

We then moved the course location north to Gulu, to enable a more field-based learning experience and opportunities for practical exercises.

Various field exercises were undertaken during this period, culminating in a one-day emergency simulation exercise.

Dates Confirmed for NIE Professional Short Course in Thailand

We are pleased to confirm dates for the next Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies. The course will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from the 23rd May to the 2nd June 2011. The cost will be US$ 2,500 (including meals, accommodation and all training materials), and the course will be hosted by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre.

The new year is with us and we would like to send best wishes to all course alumni, potential applicants and everyone else associated with the NIE Regional Training Initiative.

Course applications for the upcoming Professional Short Course in Uganda are now closed. Many thanks to everyone who applied and we hope that those who were unable to gain a place on the January course one will be able to attend one in the future. We look forward to meeting all the successful applicants in Kampala later in January.

Later in the (northern hemisphere) spring, we will be holding a course together with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre in Thailand. Applications are now being accepted for this course and the final dates and further details will be confirmed shortly.
