"Trenching at Gallipoli" by John Gallishaw is a personal narrative written in the early 20th century. On August 5, 2010, at the San José mine in northern Chile, 33 men were entombed 2,300 feet below the earth when a slab of rock the size of a skyscraper sheared off the mountain and sealed shut their only access to the surface. The miners were discovered alive 17 days later, and for the next seven weeks after that discovery, as rescuers sought to bring them to the surface, the eyes of the world shifted to this previously obscure corner of South America. This book started out as a single chapter written and posted to my Facebook profile. The response to that single story was overwhelming and I continued to write and post a chapter a day for what ended up being a total of 70 days. Each story built on the last and brought the reader further into the lives of John and Sarah who lived alone in a small cove (Ben Batt's Cove) on Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland. Each morning, I would write a new chapter and post it to Facebook. What started out with a few readers turned into thousands who became enchanted with both the place and the characters in the story. Each chapter was commented on hundreds of times and "liked" by many, many more. The readers became participants in the story and helped me steer the direction of what is now, my first book.

Although I wrote the words, I feel like this is very much a collaboration between me, the author, and those original readers. This book is for those readers.

This book details the rise and fall of the bootlegging industry in Atlantic waters, the efforts made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to curb these criminal activities, and the evolution of laws from the Prohibition era to present day that have brought the trade to a virtual standstill.
