After sharing that this February is the start of a month-long #worthyofwearing challenge, many of you asked how to get involved. There is no official sign up for joining, but I do encourage you to share your interpretation of what #worthyofwearing means for you this month. Check out the blog post, and head to your closet to start digging in! Please tag me on instagram @nmcaruso and use the hashtag #worthyofwearing so I can share how this movement impacts all of us.

We all love before-and-after TV, and the reason is that glimmer we see in the eyes of the “After” moment. Unless it was a tragic change that muted the authentic beauty in that person, most “After” shots show the person recognizing themself in a new light. And that glimmer is just the beginning.

When we recognize our worth, our God-given dignity, our talents, our strengths, and our uniqueness, it emanates from us in every interaction. When we feel confident, we can focus less on ourselves and our insecurities, and more on how we can serve through the state in life in which we live. A friend so wisely told me recently that she struggles with vanity most when she doesn’t “get ready” in the morning, because she spends the day thinking of herself and her insecurities, rather than being present to the people and tasks that require her attention in the moment. I find her point of view so poignant, and I often feel the same way, but couldn’t express it so concisely.

Fashion and beauty always get dismissed as a frivolous use of time; a pursuit that is both materialistic and narcissistic, but alter the intention behind what you do, and even the pursuit of holiness can put self above God and others in an unhealthy (and sinful) way. So, as you wade through your hangers in search of your favorite pieces, the ones you always feel great in, keep in mind your intention in dressing. Ask yourself: “Does this represent who I am, who God created me to be? Do I feel like myself when I wear it? Does it reveal part of my story, whether playful prints, streamlined separates, or vintage pieces? Does this outfit distract from my dignity in an immodest way? Is what I’m wearing fitting the context of where I am?”

If you are going to tackle this challenge this February, I encourage you to go to your closet and drawers and do a bit of a look-through.

PREPPING YOUR CLOSET FOR #WORTHYOFWEARING

1. Separate your clothing by category. Keep gym clothes in one section, pajamas in another, and categorize your hanging clothes in sections so tees and blazers are all separated. Brownie points if you like to hang them in color order too! this reduces the time it takes to choose your outfit so you can get on with your day.

2. TRY ON YOUR FAVORITE PIECES. TAKE 20 MINUTES to PUT ON THE OUTFITs YOU FEEL BEST IN. NOTICE WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT them, AND HOW YOU CAN REPLICATE them IN DIFFERENT COLORS, TEXTURES, AND SEASONS OF THE YEAR. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING A SIGNATURE STYLE! IN FACT, A SELF-IMPOSED UNIFORM IS OFTEN THE BEST WAY TO COMBAT OUTFIT-DECISION-FATIGUE, and some of the most stylish women of all time often wore similar versions of the same outfit, like audrey hepburn and jackie onassis kennedy. I USE PINTEREST TO LOG MY FAVORITE OUTFITS, AND ONES I WANT TO TRY, NOT JUST WHAT LOOKS PRETTY in general, BUT WHAT REALLY WORKS WITH MY BODY type AND MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE. IT’S LIKE A DIGITAL LOOKBOOK OF MY FAVORITE THINGS!

3. HOW IS THE FIT? IS THE FABRIC BUNCHING AND CREASING ACROSS THE BUST, AROUND THE MID-SECTION, OR ACROSS THE CROTCH? IS IT HANGING SO LOOSELY OVER YOUR FRAME THAT YOU ARE DROWNING IN FABRIC? TAKE NOTE OF THE FIT AND DECIDE IF IT IS WORTH KEEPING, OR IF IT CAN BE SOLD THROUGH A SECONDHAND SITE LIKE POSHMARK, THRED UP, OR TRADESY. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR STAINS, RIPS, AND EXCESSIVE PILLING AND CONSIDER DONATING YOUR TEXTILES, or CUTTING THEM INTO cleaning RAGS.

4. WHAT CAN GO? IS THERE A TOP YOU KEEP MEANING TO WEAR, BUT EVERY TIME YOU PUT IT ON YOU TAKE IT OFF? IS THERE A DRESS THAT’S 2 SIZES TOO SMALL AND YOU’RE HOLDING ONTO IT HOPING YOU’LL FIT IN IT AGAIN ONE DAY? OR IS THERE A SWEATER YOU GOT AS A GIFT THAT YOU REALLY DON’T LOVE? GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO PART WITH THEM. MORE THAN CLUTTERING YOUR MIND WITH “NO, NO NO” EVERY TIME YOU TRY TO GET DRESSED, THEY ARE HOLDING YOU BACK FROM THE EDITED VERSION OF YOUR CLOSET WHERE YOU USE WHAT YOU LOVE. ONE WOMAN’S CLUTTER IS ANOTHER WOMAN’S THRIFT STORE DREAM FIND!

5. FIND YOUR ACCESSORIES. EARRINGS AND NECKLACES ARE THE SIMPLEST WAY TO FEEL A LITTLE MORE DRESSED UP, EVEN WITH THE SIMPLEST OUTFIT. THIS CHALLENGE IS NOT ABOUT WEARING HIGH HEELS EVERY DAY, THOUGH YOU SHOULD IF THAT’S YOUR FAVORITE. THIS CHALLENGE IS ABOUT TAKING TIME TO LET YOURSELF FEEL PRETTY, TO CULTIVATE THAT INNER SMILE WHERE YOU LOVE YOUR OUTFIT AND YOU DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS IT. ACCESSORIES ARE FUN TO SWITCH UP! HAVE FUN WITH SCARVES, BAGS, JEWELRY, AND HEADBANDS.

6. take stock of what you’d like to purchase to round out your closet. i keep a folder in my phone of my “to buy” list. in it are the pieces that will make my other clothes even more versatile, and some wish list items, so that next time i go shopping i can keep a lookout for specific pieces. this is especially helpful at thrift stores and places like tj maxx where the inventory can be overwhelming.

Once the temperatures begin to lower for good, I pull out all of my Fall and Winter style essentials. There are a few classics I keep in rotation every year that help me create my uniform of reliable outfits that can then be dressed up or varied with accessories. My cold weather wardrobe always has similar tried and true silhouettes, fabrics, and staples, but every year I add in a new piece or two to keep things fresh. And, to save you some time, I scoured my favorite online shops like Uniqlo, ASOS, Mango, H&M, and Nordstrom for similar items so you can stock your closet with pieces that you’ll love mixing up all season long.

COATS

FAUX FUR COAT: (OLD FOREVER 21) SIMILAR

Favorites: Faux fur SOLID mid-length coat, shorter animal print jacket, a puffer, parka, and a simple maxi coat.

Outerwear transforms a simple turtleneck and jeans into something much more fabulous (or casual) depending on the occasion. I love faux fur with ripped jeans, a maxi coat over a jogging outfit, or a gorgeous dress topped with a cropped animal faux fur jacket. Puffers and parkas are where it’s at on those frozen tundra days, and I have been super faithful to these two styles because my sleek puffer doesn’t add bulk but keeps me warm, and my parka adds a nice shape when I want to go for the leggings and sweatshirt vibe.

SHOES

BOOTIES: MARC FISHER YALE BOOTIE

FAVORITES: BLACK POINTY TOE CHELSEA BOOTS, KNEE HIGH HEELED BOOTS, MID CALF BOOTIES, AND CLASSIC FLAT RIDING BOOTS.

Boots are the only shoe I wear throughout the colder months, unless I am sporting a high-top pair of leather Converse. Whether they are flat, round toe, pointy, heeled, or even snake print, they make my basics look a little more polished. Especially now that I have been spending a little more on a higher quality shoe, I love how classic shapes like these last years and years. Chelsea boots are flattering with cropped pants, skinny jeans, and shorter hem dresses and skirts. And to me, there is nothing better than an over the knee boot styled under a midi or maxi dress for a little drama. Mid calf booties are a trend that keeps coming back, which is good news because they really jazz up a simple pair of pants or party-ready midi skirt. If I could, I would have many variations on these boot shapes, but if you keep a simple closet, one or two of these styles will carry you through the season.

HATS & BAGS

TOTE: (OLD BCBG) SIMILAR

FAVORITES: CASHMERE BEANIE, WOOL OR FELT BERET, BIG LEATHER TOTE, COMPACT CROSSBODY, AND SIMPLE BUCKET BAG.

Accessories are such a fun way to incorporate trends you love, and add in some personality to basics. Years ago, I invested in a cashmere beanie and haven’t looked back because it is not only super soft, but so toasty warm. Berets are timeless (and ageless), and look so effortlessly elegant with that Parisian-chic vibe. As for bags, a big tote is always in rotation when I need to carry-it-all. I also love a compact crossbody for busy days, and a simple small bucket bag for getting a little more dressed up.

TOPS

SWEATER: (OLD H&M MENS) SIMILAR

FAVORITES: Turtlenecks, chunky knits, cashmere sweaters, long sleeves, button downs, and blouses.

Not only are knits super warm, but they are my number one cozy factor when it’s freezing. Cotton turtlenecks, long sleeves, button downs, and blouses also make great basics to layer under accessories and outerwear for an outfit that is uniquely you. Some of my favorite tops I wear time and time again are the most simple: a white button down, a black scoop neck long sleeve, or a cream cable knit sweater. For me, simple tops just mean I can have more fun with bottoms, boots, and accessories.

BOTTOMS

DENIM: LEVIS

FAVORITES: Skinny Jeans, wide leg cropped pants, ponte leggings, silky or lace skirts, velour joggers.

Playing around with fits and fabrics is really fun with a few go-to shapes. Skinny jeans are always in rotation because of how well they tuck into boots, and even when they scrunch a bit at the ankles. The wider leg cropped jean is having its moment, which is a super fun switch to try, especially in the high-waisted styles. Leggings can be pants when they're a ponte fabric (think thicker and less see-through), making them perfect for layering under tunics and dresses when you panty hose won’t cut it. Skirts are where I like to have a bit of fun with prints, different textures, and shapes. And it wouldn’t be Fall or Winter for me without some cozy velour joggers to change into after a long day.

DRESSES

Whether printed or plain, midi or maxi, sheer or supersoft knit, a dress is such a fun piece to style in the colder weather because it doesn’t have to stand alone. Accessories, outerwear, and even what’s underneath can change the look of a dress and make it much more versatile. Sometimes I feel like summer dresses have to be a specific fit and color because they are the outfit, but in Fall and Winter, a dress is just another layer to have fun with.

You know those beautiful clothes pushed to the far side of the closet? The ones that when the eye catches the sleeve’s color, a feeling flashes by. Maybe it’s a memory of when it was last worn, and maybe it has a sentimental story. We all have those special pieces in our wardrobe that are so dear to us, yet we decide long before wearing them again (or ever) that they are “too nice to wear”.

When it’s time to get dressed, the closet doors open and the familiar dialog starts.

“No, not this top. It’s only a girls night in. It’s too nice to wear.”

“It’s Wednesday. I should save these for a special occasion.”

“Those pants are so gorgeous and they were such a steal on sale! But, I’ll have to dry clean them, so not this time.”

And to all of this, I ask you with sisterly kindness, why do these things live in your closet? Why should we hold onto something that feels like a burden? Maybe it’s the chartreuse sweater our great aunt’s neighbor knit that’s itchy and suffocating. Maybe it’s a dress in a size that never quite fit, and we keep it just in case we magically shrink, when all it really does it make us feel shame every time we see it. If you have clothes in your closet that make you feel ashamed, uncomfortable, or self-conscious I beg you, PLEASE let them go! Say a little prayer that they bring the next owner great joy, and donate them to your favorite second-hand store. And while you’re at it, let go of your hole-y, your misshapen, your stained, and your faded items. You are worthy of pressed, neat, polished pieces, whether they were thrift store scores or special designer pieces.

Everything we own should be a reflection of who we are. Our clothes are connected to our stories, our memories, and our personal style is an introduction to who we are before we even make eye contact. When we grace our bodies with clothing that connects us with our inherent dignity, we shine. We are empowered to do our work with confidence and joy even on a hard day because we’ve taken the time to give ourselves some love. [Insert a meme here that FASHUN IS SELF-CARE.] Wearing clothing that makes us feel beautiful is not vain, it is a way to show how we respect that we are a creation of God. When our intention is to be a better worker, a better student, or a better mother, beautiful clothes can help sanctify our work because we are less focused on our insecurities and more focused on serving others. That may be bold statement, but just as God is Love, He is also Beauty. He created Beauty, and we can wear our beautiful clothes to reflect His love back to everyone we meet.

Those items that seem “too nice to wear” we are actually Worthy of Wearing. We are worthy because we are created in the image and likeness of God. We are worthy because we were designed to fulfill a mission, to share our hearts, and to change the world we live in, no matter how ordinary our day to day is.

Can a pair of earrings, shoes, or leopard coat change the world? If the piece stays on a hanger, it can’t do much. But a sequin skirt on the woman in front of you in line at the local cafe? That’s a conversation starter. A well-made leather bag might be your introduction to evangelize, without uttering a word about faith. Self confidence is contagious. I believe there is a sense of duty in dressing well firstly because we can serve others more freely when we are less focused on how much we hate our shoes, and secondly, because we are models to the younger generations of what it means to be a woman.

Kristin Foss @kristin_foss : “#worthyofwearing means I can mix my thrifted Kate Spade bag with my oldest, most worn in Gap sweater. It’s harmonizing a curated closet that defines my style, without segregating my house-uniform from my dream date-night look. Because I am all things, mom, designer, wife, daughter and woman. I, and all women deserve to dress how we feel and not let the work of day define our style.”

Lillian Fallon @lillian_fallon : “To me, #worthyofwearing means not being afraid of wearing something different. Sometimes I get nervous about wearing an outfit that is a little weird or over-the-top, but instead of taking it off and putting on something conventional, I ask myself if I feel confident in the look and I tell myself to just wear it anyway. That just because other people dress in a “normal” way doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice my creativity. My kooky, creative outfits are worthy of wearing because they are original and reflect who I am as an individual.”

Emily Runyan @emilyrachelle.runyan : “Sometimes I struggle to see the point in investing a little time in my morning to get ready and dress myself in an outfit I feel good in when I’m at home most of the day taking care of a babe. But I have noticed that when I do take that time, I don’t avoid eye contact while running errands and I’m far more productive and confident in my day. I am beautiful in this season and always, and I am worthy of proclaiming God’s beauty each and every day.”

Katie Waldow @therealkatiewaldow : “To me, worthy of wearing means approaching every day as something special. I don’t have to wait for an occasion to wear that gorgeous sweater, or those fun shoes, just because I think today might be ordinary. When I wear things that make me feel feminine, and unique, and fun, I feel more confident in my skin. And when that happens, even the most ordinary day can feel extraordinary.”

Lisa Kirk @lisajanelkirk : “Sometimes, leggings and a top knot are what make me feel like the most prepared, equipped version of myself as a stay-at-home-part-time-working mama—there’s no denying that. But more often than not, I feel like my best self with lipstick on. When I wear beautiful but admittedly impractical shoes. When I put on a dress or a sweater that I love...even though it’s dry clean only. Finding joy in putting an outfit together has been part of me since long, long before I became a mother. The #worthyofwearing Challenge

Prep your closet and mindset.

One thing I cannot compromise as a mother is my style. I've heard many women express that they don't feel like themselves after having kids, and that sometimes goes in hand with forfeiting their personal style for things that are quote "more practical". 

I truly do not know what is more practical than an all-black ensemble (doesn't show stains), flat boots (for running after kiddos), and leggings that look like real pants (hello stretch)! With just a few personal touches of silver jewelry, I threw this whole outfit on in just a few minutes.

Since I am also pregnant and due in December, I've tried to stick to mostly non-maternity clothes except for bottoms, because I want the flexibility to wear these pieces again next Fall. My strategy has been to size up (this sweater tunic is an XL) and look for fabrics that are forgiving with a bit of stretch or loose enough to drape over my belly. I love the tiered bell sleeve of this sweater because it adds a femininity to the look that would otherwise be lacking. Ruffles and bell sleeves are everywhere this season and I think it's a fun trend to try because it really looks good on everyone. Also, when all I want to wear is leggings as pants, I always opt for a thick fabric like these ponte ones from Target, and a tunic length to strategically cover my bottom half.

The reason behind wearing all-black, other than the fact that my love for it is deeply tied to my New York roots, is that you can shop for less expensive items that look more expensive simply because they are black. Next time you're in the store, hold up two of the same items -- one in a color, and one in black. Do you notice a difference? Black material hides imperfections, seams, and creates a flawless silhouette on our figures. Sometimes I find that bright colors can be difficult to match with other items in my closet, or they simply feel too bold to wear often (hence the reason so many of us have a bright shirt that often goes unworn). 

Comfort and simplicity are always key to whatever I wear. And these booties-- these Marc Fisher booties! They are a much less expensive version of the Acne Jensen ones I have had my eye on for a long time. They are made of the most buttery leather and have the perfect height heel that make them comfortable to wear and still polished.

This look could easily be switched up with any pop of color in the accessories department. Think: maroon embroidered velvet slides, a bright blue bag, or printed scarf. What's your go-to outfit in your Fall wardrobe?

Dressing a growing baby bump can be daunting, especially as the "real" clothes in the closet stop fitting. After selling a bunch of clothing items on Poshmark, my go-to reselling app, I had a few dollars to get a couple new things. As I mentioned in my First Trimester Update I do not have plans to buy too many maternity-specific items, so these are things I picked up a few sizes bigger than I normally wear. 

TOPS

Tees, tanks, etc.

With tops, I looked for A-line, hip-grazing, loose tops that I could wear with pants or skirts. They drape nicely over my little bump, and I know that I will be so happy to re-shop my closet come next Summer when I am still holding onto a bit of postpartum baby weight (when clingy clothes are not my friend). I also shopped for a few simple tanks and tees that I could tuck into form-fitting skirts. In those I usually buy a small, so I bought a large to accommodate my growing bust and belly. So far so good. Here are a few similar pieces that are perfect for Summer and layering once the Fall comes.

BOTTOMS

Stretchy skirts, denim, linen pants.

Pants can be tricky during pregnancy, and I definitely recommend getting 2 pairs of maternity jeans to rotate in your wardrobe, especially as the Fall/Winter season approaches. But denim is not the only option.

I found these black linen wide-leg pants in my local TJ Maxx, and they had a stretchy band meant to be folded down, but I wear the stretchy fabric up and over my belly. They almost look like what you'd find in a maternity section, and they were a great price. Also look for low-rise utility style jogger pants with a stretchy waist band you could wear under the belly, like this pair or something similar.

Thinking outside the box is helpful when looking for maternity style clothing, so be sure to try on an array of sizes and look for items that will allow room to grow.

DRESSES

Tight and A-Line loose.

Dresses are usually not my go-to item because I am eternally more comfortable in pants, unless I am pregnant. I've found dresses are very flattering on a pregnant body because of how they hug the middle and show off the beautiful curve of the bump.

I've resorted to wearing a few loose, drapey A-line dresses for daytime with sandals during the week, and tighter, more body-con style dresses for date night or special events. 

When looking for dresses that are non-maternity, make sure they don't have seams or elastic in the middle, and steer clear of belted styles. Sometimes those seams can be off-shape to a prominent belly, and end up looking so. Also, when trying on dresses, make sure they are long enough so that they don't dip in toward the crotch and shorten because of how far out the belly sits. Most stores have a basic section of simple midi and maxi dresses that you can absolutely wear proudly during your pregnancy.

As soon as I found out about my pregnancy, I knew it was time to re-assess my summer wardrobe. I went over to my local TJ Maxx and found a few things that I knew would transition with my growing belly this summer, and be nursing friendly and comfortable next summer. I passed a rack of black, and immediately this shiny crinkle culotte jumpsuit had to be mine. I grabbed size large in hopes that it would be loose, and the minute I pulled it on I knew it was coming home with me. It has the perfect Studio 54 vibe that I've been hunting for in a jazzy jumpsuit.

The top is a wrap style (perfect for nursing a baby) with adjustable spaghetti straps that allowed me to tighten it as needed. The middle has a stretchy seam which I can pull over my belly and allow the draping to fall gently over it. I could have worn this jumpsuit alone, but it needed a tank underneath and it looked a bit casual. In order to dress it up, I found a black mesh crop top with bell sleeves that added a feminine veil over the shoulders, without adding any bulk. The crop top was a great purchase too because it can be layered over a bunch of other dresses I already own.

Culottes are a tricky style to wear. If they are too short, it can widen a fuller middle and accentuate it, but when they graze the lower part of the shin, it mimics a midi skirt that elegantly displays the ankles. I opted for a simple nude stiletto heel to create a barely-there silhouette that wouldn't compete with the volume of the jumpsuit. 

After a friend returned from Mexico with a gorgeous straw pom pom bag for me, I have been dying to use it. The bright colors are an instant mood-boost, and I love the lightweight straw that is practically screaming for a trip to San Tropez. With any all-black summer ensemble, a pop of color is a must to keep it light and bright.

Weekends out give me a chance to dress up a bit more than I do during the week, but I can't go full on ladylike loveliness while traipsing around D.C. and mothering a curious toddler. 

I always start with basics, like a simple white cotton top and well-fitting denim, and build up from there. The peplum detail in the top balances the edgier ripped jeans, and the tailored tweed jacket is just feminine enough to counter my favorite gritty ankle booties and studded hobo bag. 

One of my fashion pet-peeves is looking too overdone, which is why I wear my hair messy with a full face of makeup, and pair something a little more grunge-inspired with something more fitted and feminine. If a look falls heavily in one trend or one mood, it surely makes a statement, and sometimes too much of one for my taste.

Black on black may be one of my favorite (no-brainer) outfits, and it is what I wear most often, however I do love shades of brown, especially those in the camel and cognac color families paired with crisp white and Americana blue jeans. 

Springtime is all about layering, especially in and around DC because lately it's been 70 degrees one day at 42 the next. We had a full day out planned, so I wore a white layered tank under a menswear style button down, topped off with my favorite standing collar blazer. I'm a pants girl, so I always opt for denim or trousers and an easy, comfortable shoe like these leather booties from Sam Edelman.

I love denim. My fashionable parents did too, probably because they were designing and selling denim long before I came along. But being the little 90s girl that I was, I wore denim on denim before I knew it was cool; probably with my black platform Steve Madden slip ons (anyone remember those?). I wear denim still, because it's comfortable, timeless, and goes with everything in my closet. Jeans are so versatile, yet they can be impossible to shop for. Once you do find the right pair, buy them in bulk-- trust me. 

Since I have been shopping for denim for something like 20 years now, I know a thing or two about what to look for in fit. Magazines always create charts with body types named after fruits, but that can be confusing. When I spent a few years working at Gap during college, I met so many women on the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans. Some of the biggest issues we all battle are finding the right length, the right fit around our middle, and the right wash.

I'm here to tell you that there's no reason why a $12 pair of jeans can't be as great as a $200 pair of jeans, as long as you know what you're looking for. 

FIT 

MUFFIN TOP: It took me years to figure out that my wide hips don't fit into low-rise anything. Once I started trying on mid-rise and high-rise fits of denim, I started to feel comfortable tucking in my tops and didn't feel the need to wear lots of layers or long shirts to cover my butt. My "muffin top" quickly disappeared into high-rise jeans and flattered my shape, instead of cutting it in half. 

BUNCHING: Make sure when the jeans are zipped or buttoned up, that they lay flat over your zipper and crotch. Any bunching or wrinkling while you are standing up is a sign that they are too tight and could lead to unflattering creasing.

BACK GAP: If there is a gap of fabric at your lower back, look for a higher rise, and look for jeans with stretch, made to hug every curve. 

TIGHT OR LOOSE: Denim should follow the shape of your body, but look neither painted on, nor sagging. See that the backside has lift, and everything feels hugged. If you have to peel them off to take them off, chances are they are too tight. 

LENGTH: Ideally you want the inseam to hit at the top of your foot, if you're looking for that classic pair. Experiment with cropped jeans to show off your shoes, floor-grazing flares to add height, or cuff long slim fit jeans change things up a bit. 

POCKETS: Look for back pockets that are neither too large or too small, which can exaggerate the width of the backside. If the pockets are far apart, that can also add width. 

ZIPPER HEIGHT: If you're at the store with no time to try on, look for the length of the zipper's inseam. If it's about 8-10 inches, you can be sure it's a high-rise fit. Any time I've shopped for denim at stores like Forever 21, I eyeball the zipper height to make sure they're the style I need before taking 10 pairs to the dressing room. 

WASH

Dark washes are universally flattering, year round. For a few classic washes to start off your denim collection, stick to white, black, and dark jeans. Those three washes are the easiest to dress up and down. Lighter washes with the true blue jean hue are classic Americana, and pair well with casual pieces like a simple white t-shirt. Sometimes I'll wear a destroyed pair of light wash jeans with a sequin jacket, because it's fun to juxtapose super fancy with super casual to create something fresh. Whether you're a fan of prints and brights, or minimal neutrals, darker washes do not compete or clash with the top half, no matter what you're wearing. 

5 TYPES OF DENIM EVERYONE SHOULD OWN

1. Dark wash skinny jeans -- great for tucking into boots, dressing up with a blazer, or with your favorite top. 

2. Black skinny jeans -- the blacker the better, and my personal favorite for every day because they are slimming and so chic. 

3. Light wash boyfriend jeans -- a destroyed pair of jeans with a looser fit make a fancy top or plain tee look approachable and a little tomboy-ish in the best way. 

4. Medium or dark wash flares -- they even out proportions with a slim fitting top, and make legs look super long. 

5. A colored pair of cropped, slim fit jeans -- in either grey, white, or army green, it's nice to have a pair like these for showing off a little ankle and adding some color to your bottom half.

One way to add interest to your outfits and create something that feels original and stylish is to juxtapose pieces that are more dressed up with others that are dressed down. It creates an unfussy, but intentional look that can translate well for multiple occasions or events without having to change. 

We recently met friends for Sunday mass and coffee in Georgetown, at our favorite spot Grace Street Coffee, and I wanted to wear something that I could feel dressed for church, and also be comfortable to walk and care for my little girl. 

I pulled out this amazing little babydoll dress I found at H&M in December. It's a sheer black swiss dot material with a poet sleeve and ruffled hem. It could easily be dressed up even more with heels, sparkly jewelry and a bold lip, but I dressed it down with my ankle booties, leather jacket, and thick grey knit scarf. 

For jewelry, I went for minimal gold pieces that felt modern, but simple. This was so easy to throw on, I just might wear it next Sunday too! Do you have a go-to outfit for dressed up dressed down occasions?

My fascination with vintage fashion knows no bounds, and I love to gather inspiration from the 1920s, 1940s, and 1960s. I've always loved to hunt for treasures in thrift stores and vintage shops, no matter where I am, but there is a certain way to wear something that is vintage or even just vintage inspired, as this outfit is, to modernize it and freshen it up.

I style my outfits with some of this, and some of that, to add visual interest, minimize looking like everything came right off a mannequin, or thrifted head-to-toe. 

Here I paired a vintage-looking leopard shift dress from J. Crew, classic black tights and turtleneck, sentimental jewelry (the earrings I wore to my sister's wedding), with lace-up shoes, which seem to be sold almost everywhere these days-- and aren't they fun? 

My formula for a stylish ensemble for any occasion is, "something vintage, something classic, something sentimental, something new" and from where I stand it proves itself a good combo every time.

Experimenting with fashion pieces in my closet to reflect my personal style is one of my favorite ways to express myself, though Monday through Friday my attention is focused on my duties as a stay-at-home mom, so I have a self-imposed uniform and I love it. 

Some of the women whose style I admire most have a bit of a methodology to their way of dressing, and it reduces the decision fatigue of trying on piece after piece to see if they go together, which often ends in a pile of unfolded clothes on the bed. Emmaunelle Alt, Garance Dore, Jeanne Damas, Charlotte Casiraghi, Giorgia Tordini, Maja Wyh, Olivia Palermo, Caroline de Maigret, and Erin Wasson are just a few of my style icons and together they all look so polished, put together, and yet not overdone. When you can have a simple uniform base layer like black jeans (these high-waisted stretchy Levi's) with a neutral top, you can throw nearly anything over it and look instantly stylish. An all-black-everything outfit is my favorite ensemble for nearly every occasion, because it can be easily changed for events with the addition of sparkly, chunky jewelry, a printed overcoat, or bright silk scarf. Not to mention, it hides food stains, spilled coffee, and nearly everything else you'd find within 3 feet of a toddler. And, as one of my best friends always says, "black makes everything look more expensive."

With Bing Crosby playing in the background, freshly popped popcorn filling the air with that warm, salty smell, our local nursery really knew how to set the scene for the perfect Christmas tree hunt. I piled on a bunch of cozy layers because the temperatures here are pretty mild, but the air is chilly. And December is the perfect excuse to start wearing more red! My scarf is surprisingly versatile in the plaid print, and I love how it makes a simple white top and leather jacket look so festive. 

Whenever there is a chance of mud, I always wear my go-to Hunter boots. These ones I'm wearing are currently discontinued, but there is a new, lower ankle style lace up boot that look simple and modern, but keep your feet completely comfortable and dry. Hunter also makes their classic boot in the same matte black, and they are the rain boots I recommend to everyone because the quality is impeccable. Perfect for clomping through the tree farm stand! 

Our little C had the best time, as we danced around to Christmas music, and she got to snack on free popcorn and warm cider. I love creating simple memories, and this year has been even more fun because she can communicate on a deeper level about her excitement for Christmas and decorating the house. We settled on a Scotch Fir tree (not pictured), and I love how full and tall it is. It might be my favorite tree we've had to date. Gold is one of my favorite metallics, and this gold midi skirt is an absolute bargain for around $14 (and has an elastic waistband--ha!) and makes for a jazzy holiday skirt that's also super versatile -- it also comes in silver. Because it is such a statement piece, I paired it with black opaque tights, a black Uniqlo turtleneck, black Dolce Vita suede boots, and a tough leather belt with coordinating gold details, to make it more wearable for daytime. This skirt could easily be dressed up with a lace top worn under a tuxedo jacket, some strappy heels or pointy toe booties, and gold jewelry. Though I would stick to a monochromatic look with a bold skirt, play around with different color families, like grey, taupe, cream, and navy blue.

"No white" after Labor Day was a Fashion Rule for a very long time, for reasons I will never understand. Whether it's all white, all black, all navy, or all burgundy I am a big, big fan of monochromatic looks from head to toe, no matter the time of year. Mixing textures, rather than colors or prints, is my favorite form of expression, and this outfit showcases just that: a chunky knit sweater, slim zipped jeans, and leopard print pony hair booties to top it all off. 

Since the jeans are slim fit, I chose a boxy knit sweater to balance them out-- there is nothing worse than feeling like 10 pounds of sausage in a 5 pound bag, if you know what I mean. It's always a good idea to coordinate the fit of a piece, and juxtapose form-fitting with flowy as much as possible to suit your figure. 

A simple chain strap bag so versatile for everything from a cocktail dress, to casual jeans, just like everything you see here. I found mine for $20 in a little consignment store in West Texas, and it's what thrifting dreams are made of, and precisely what fuels my love for thrift shopping. For me, personal style is about combining old and new, luxury and bargain pieces, grandma's costume jewelry and diamonds. When we shop right off a mannequin, or buy every matching piece in a set collection, it's hard to see our humanity, our story, through the look. Every outfit has a story, and if this one had to have a headline, it would be, " simple with a wild side."

I have always been drawn to the ease of dressing up basics, and the beauty of the moment we live in, is that a pair of heels no longer needs to accompany a dress. Audrey Hepburn is one of my style icons, particularly when she played the role of Jo Stockton in Funny Face (1957) with her all-black ensembles, great outerwear, and dainty shoes. That combination is what my mind goes to when I am too frazzled to "decide" on an outfit. 

We were heading into Georgetown for Sunday mass and a picnic lunch, so I wanted to wear something classic enough for church, and comfortable enough to chase after my daughter and niece. A simple grey sweater is such a versatile piece, and I love this all-cotton Michael Kors one I found at TJ Maxx. It has a rounded hem and covers my be-hind, which I am currently enjoying right now, especially because I have a penchant for slim fit bottoms; a tunic-length top creates balance. 

The way to dress up basics is with the accessories: shoes, bag, jewelry, and outerwear. Juxtaposing evening-ready pieces with basics instantly makes them look elegant and ladylike, but not stuffy. With my simple sweater and cropped (faded) jeans, I strapped on my pointy mary jane heels, threw on this cool plaid swing coat, paired with this Rebecca Minkoff red suede fringe bag, chunky silver necklace, and cherry-red lip.  

Though this outfit was a bit dressed up, I was able to swap my heels for boots to make a day of walking Georgetown much more comfortable. We picnicked in the grass, and walked the whole water front. It was a perfect Sunday.

This is the time of year I switch from breezy white tops to form-fitting black separates and statement outerwear. I like to wear a monochromatic base, especially under an open coat, because it creates a thin column from chest to toe, which is very flattering, no matter your shape. 

Plaid can be difficult to wear, and I find I often feel a little country when I wear it, but after coming across this pair of window pane plaid in a slim pant, I knew it was my version of plaid. True to my taste, I had to toughen it up a bit with the black ankle booties, wide choker, and my mom's retro sunglasses, which I'm pretty sure were 80s knock-offs of Ray-Ban Clubmasters. 

A trench coat is a classic piece, one that I truly believe looks good on everyone. Whether buttoned and belted, or worn open and flowy as I did, it adds a touch of sophistication and uptown vibe to whatever you throw it over. My boots and bag have surely seen better days, but the leather is starting to wear and crinkle in the best way, and I kind of love it. Plus, pieces that look worn and loved have character, and that's what fashion is in real life. I always try to pair bits of old and new, high end and low end, to represent my eclectic approach to, well, everything. Our clothes reflect our personality, and I'd say this outfit is a pretty good representation of my style this season.

When I watch old movies, I fawn over the glamorous costumes. Some of my favorites are An Affair to Remember (Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr), Now Voyager (Bette Davis & Paul Henreid), and Arabesque (Sophia Loren & Gregory Peck). Most of all, I love the ladylike outerwear in ranges of color that made them look impeccable, sharp, and elegant. 

I came across this blush Tahari boucle open coat at TJ Maxx, and immediately snagged it because it reminded me of something Sophia Loren would have thrown over her shoulders to take a late-night walk. This time of year lighter outerwear is more practical and since this is un-lined with an open design, it wears a lot like a long sweater, making it a perfect layering piece for Fall. 

Black leather booties, a roomy black leather hobo bag, and ripped denim are the perfect juxtaposition to ultra-femme florals, pearls, and pink. Whenever I wear something feminine, I always counter it with something edgy or masculine to add a little balance and make it feel more me. Maybe because it's the Pantone color of the year, this shade of pink is everywhere right now! So I rounded up a bunch of cool pink coats in a range of prices and styles. For someone like me that has a lot of neutrals and basics, colored and patterned outerwear is a creative way to add some personality and variability to your wardrobe.

One of the easiest pieces to throw in a weekender bag is a jersey dress. My current favorite is a long sleeve midi dress that I picked up at Forever 21 last Fall (and they still have it in stock!). On our last weekend away to Charlottesville, I wore this comfortable, easy-to-throw-on dress to drive down and explore on our first evening there. What I love about this dress is how versatile it is, because of its simple silhouette and neutral grey hue. It can be worn for a casual walk or easily transition into a date night outfit with some satin slingback heels and a cropped jacket. 

My go-to black scarf added some flow to the slim shape of the dress, and I wore, for what seems like the last time that you will see them, my super comfortable leather sandals. We had so much fun exploring this cool college town, but I think it's always easier to enjoy exploring when you're not concerned with what you're wearing! This travel-friendly outfit took up almost zero room in my weekender bag and didn't look the slightest bit wrinkled when I put it on: YES!

On our way home from military duty, we planned to pit stop in Manhattan for lunch because, why not. Upon arriving over the Triborough Bridge, we blasted New York Groove with the whole city skyline in view. As we made our way over to FDR Drive, we reminisced about our old neighborhood of Yorkville and the good memories we had there. Our lunch spot was pretty epic, as we decided to park at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of my favorite places in the whole world. 

I don't know if it's because I have early childhood memories at The Met, or because it is full of history and works created by some of the most talented people to walk this earth, but that museum of one of my happy places; on a sunny Saturday afternoon it's nothing short of perfect. With a hot summer breeze and the sound of the city, we were perched there taking it all in until our hungry bellies reminded us of lunchtime.   

This white on white ensemble has been on constant rotation as we round out the summer months. I wore a white blouse-y tunic with white skinny moto jeans, and threw on the old faithful leather bag, leather sandals, and nude sunglasses. My little Upper East Side lady was sporting her favorite strawberry dress and red Salt Water sandals as we traipsed through this lovely little corner of the city. 

We haphazardly stumbled upon the Belvedere Castle for our picnic lunch, and decided to bring our little princess to the top to see the view. 

As I watched our little C fall in love with New York, The Met, and Central Park, I couldn't help feel my stomach flutter with that is-this-real-life feeling. When we piled back into the car for the rest of our trip, there was no doubt we chose well for our lunch stop. Bye for now, NYC! We will most definitely be back.
