Autumn is often a drippy, gray time in the Pacific Northwest. But once in a while, we are blessed with dry weather as the leaves turn. And that means I’m out with my camera enjoying the crisp air and the vivid colors. The rain will come, but today we’re feeling the crunch of leaves underfoot and enjoying the glow of sunlight on trees going into hibernation.

Olympia’s Capitol Lake is a gem in the state capitol’s downtown…from a distance. This summer it is half-covered with green algae. And because of invasive New Zealand mud snails, it has been off limits to swimmers, boaters, and any other use for years. It’s still popular with waterfowl, however.
Olympia is a unique town in many ways; one is that the major fireworks display isn’t on July 4, but at the culmination of the annual carnival called Lakefair. Held on the shore of Capitol Lake (actually a dammed estuary, but that’s another story), the festival is the usual gathering of rides, kettle korn, and rock cover bands. And the fireworks — reflected in the shallow lake with the state capital dome in the background — are attended by thousands. Here’s a peek.

I took a break from working on year-end bookkeeping this morning (yawn…) and pulled up a photo I took a few years back of the Murray Morgan Bridge in downtown Tacoma, Washington. Built in 1913, the historic bridge over the Thea Foss Waterway had fallen into disrepair, and had been closed for some time. At the time of the photo it had reopened to foot and bike traffic, and since then it has been repaired and reopened to car traffic. The angles and decay of this photo seemed appropriate for…
