While this is a departure from the theatre group's usual Halloween fare, the group is excited to bring one of Broadway's most celebrated productions to its stage. In addition to the show, CST will also host its 6th Annual Halloween Party with Special Guest, Me-TV's Svengoolie on Friday, October 13. The 21 & Up fundraising party with food, cash bar, costume contest, and meet and greet/photo op with Rich Koz supports various projects the theatre has going on throughout 2017/2018.

HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical debuted Off-Broadway in 1967 and the production soon made its way to Broadway the following year. With music by Galt McDermot and book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, the show broke new ground in creating the "rock musical" genre. The show's soundtrack provided top 40 hits for music groups like The Cowsills and The Fifth Dimension and paved the way for other beloved Broadway musicals. Although the show has earned some controversy through the years for its use of nudity, depiction of illegal drugs on stage and irreverence toward the flag, the musical has gathered praise worldwide and in 2009 earned the Tony for Best Revival.

Chicago Street Theatre has gained a reputation for taking risks with its productions and so they and director, Bob Cooley decided that it would be okay to take a break from their usual October Halloween production to present HAIR for the show's Golden Anniversary. In addition to celebrating the musical's anniversary, both the theatre and director felt that it was important in today's political climate to share HAIR's timeless and relevant message about identity, community, global responsibility and peace.

HAIR tells the story of the "tribe", a group of politically active, counterculture, hippies living in New York in the late 60's. Together this free spirited group of bohemians explore the sexual revolution, celebrate diversity and rail against the the the drafting of young people into the Viet Nam War. Claude, his friend Berger, room mate, Sheila and the other members of The Tribe struggle to balance their lives and find their identity in an era of blossoming Civil Rights, rebellion against war, and societal restrictions from the government and their conservative parents.

For Cooley, this passion project has been on his bucket list to direct for a while. The director says that even though he was "just a kid" when the musical debuted, he grew up listening to the soundtrack with songs like "Hair", "Aquarius", "Good Morning Starshine", and "Let the Sun Shine." He added that he thinks audiences will be thrilled to hear these favorites since it's been a while since a local group has tackled the material. Cooley, who has also designed the lights for the production, says, "This show is vibrant and relevant with fantastic performances."

Cooley's dynamic cast of young performers from all over Northwest Indiana features the talents of: Caroline Rau (Munster) as The Earth Mother; Matt Kiley (Portage) as Burger; Michael Ohm (Valparaiso) as Claude; Samantha Sangerman (Miller) as Sheila; Ellie Bezotte (Valparaiso) as Jeannie; Brandon King (Portage) as Hud; Nate Hendrichs (Valparaiso) as Woof; Arlene Henry (Valparaiso) as Chrissy; Jen Hernandez (Valparaiso) as Dionne; Craig Nordstrom (Beverly Shores) as Dad, General, and others; and Jennifer Stevens (Portage) as Mom and others. Making up the show's Tribe are: Brandon Berk (Shererville); Tracy Berningham (Portage); Andrea Bertch (Valparaiso); Aaron Capello (St. John); De'Juan "Ozzie" McDuell (Valparaiso); Choreographer, Trisha Yvonne Sabocik (Hobart); and Nathaniel Wasko (Valparaiso).

Because the theatre has strayed away from the traditional scary monster themed show this October they are delighted to host a "Super Groovy" edition of their Nightmare on Chicago Street Halloween Party with Svengoolie. At press time there were some tickets available for the annual fundraising event that will take place for one night only on Friday, October 13 starting at 6:30 PM with the presentation of HAIR starting at 8 PM. Tickets to this generally SOLD-OUT event are $40 per person and includes complimentary appetizers, desserts, meet and greet, and the show.

The regular run of HAIR will continue October 14 through 29 with 10 performances. Tickets are $20 for Adults, and $17 for Students, Seniors, Military, and groups of ten or more. VIP seating accommodating four persons per show on the front row Couches are $30 per person. Purchases for all shows can be done through the CST Box Office at 219-464-1636 X1 or online at ChicagoStreet.org. Box Office hours are Noon to 4 PM, Tuesdays through Saturday and two hours prior to showtimes. The schedule of performance times is available online and by calling the Box Office.

Chicago Street Theatre's Annual Fall Blood Drive with the Red Cross will occur on Monday, October 9 fro 2-7 PM outside the theatre with free Buy One/Get One passes to attend one of the regular performances of HAIR for anyone who donates blood. On Saturday, October 14, audiences are invited to join the cast and the crew of the production following the show for an After Party hosted by Sage Restaurant, located at 157 W. Lincolnway in downtown Valparaiso. The group's popular Thursday Talkback will take place on October 19 and will be the first in CST's new 7:30 Thursday program with the show beginning a half hour earlier.

Even though there won't be monsters in the sense of Frankenstein, Dracula, or the Living Dead this October, CST hopes audiences will help celebrate "Rocktober" and aid them in fighting the real monsters of bigotry, inequality, and social injustice as they present HAIR October 13-29 at 154 W. Chicago Street in downtown Valparaiso.
Event: Amhurst Asylum: The Most Deranged Haunted Attraction to Hit the Midwesthttp://www.nwindianalife.com/home/events/details/59131-amhurst-asylum-the-most-deranged-haunted-attraction-to-hit-the-midwestSat, 21 Oct 2017 19:00:00 -0500
This October, be the first to enter this old abandoned hospital for the criminally insane! Enter the mind of our Dr. Amhurst and his mutilated nurses as you venture deep into pure horror. His experiments will leave you speechless. Literally!

Admission & Tickets
Regular tickets are available for purchase online and onsite at the Amhurst Asylum ticket booth for $25.

NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 10 WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE PROPERTY AND PERSONS 14 AND UNDER MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A LEGAL GUARDIAN.

Amhurst Asylum is located at 228 South 500 West in Valparaiso, Indiana 46385.

The Legend of Dr. Amhurst Once a picture perfect medical practice in the Midwest, the Amhurst Psychiatric Hospital was shut down by authorities nearly four decades ago. On the premises they found the remains of over two dozen victims, many with their organs harvested, others kept alive by crude methods of life support. Many rooms of the hospital contained unethical human experiments performed illegally by the hospital's leading surgeon and founder, Dr. John Amhurst. The debauchery against humanity found within those hospital walls horrified the local people, press and families of the victims. The culprit Dr. Amhurst was nowhere to be found. Police did however find what could only be described as "pieces of woman" believed to be Dr. Amhurst's late wife.

It was later discovered that Dr. Amhurst's wife suffered from a rare disease, a type of degenerative disorder similar to mad cow disease that generally has only been found in indigenous people. This disease infected her body and organs, causing them to rot and deteriorate. Without the approval the hospital board and his peers Dr. Amhurst began performing many illegal experiments attempting to transplant new organs and limbs into and onto his wife's body attempting to save her life. He used hospital facilities and his own mental patients in his twisted experiments. Finally one patient managed to escape alerting the authorities of the horror she'd be subjected too, though few would believe her story until they saw it firsthand.

Dubbed by the locals as The Amhurst Asylum, the building has now been abandoned for decades and Dr. Amhurst was never found. Throughout the years many have tried to break into the old Amhurst Asylum, attempting to see if any remnants were left behind, testing the myth. Many who enter the Amhurst Asylum mysteriously disappear. Do you have what it takes to survive The Amhurst Asylum?!

Event: Haunted Hills Hospitalhttp://www.nwindianalife.com/home/events/details/57812-haunted-hills-hospitalSat, 21 Oct 2017 19:00:00 -0500
NW IN #1 Haunted House in Lake Station Indiana @ 4700 Central Ave
Event: Alan Barcus: An Evening of Music and Wry Commentary on a Misspent Youthhttp://www.nwindianalife.com/home/events/details/58809-alan-barcus-an-evening-of-music-and-wry-commentary-on-a-misspent-youthSat, 21 Oct 2017 19:00:00 -0500
A performance of music and humor featuring some of "Lakeside Singers" from Chicago and local musicians, such as Trevor McDonald, also from La Porte.
Event: Barker Hall Film Fest to Show Classic Silent Movieshttp://www.nwindianalife.com/home/events/details/58615-barker-hall-film-fest-to-show-classic-silent-moviesSat, 21 Oct 2017 19:00:00 -0500
Two classic silent films accompanied by live music will be shown during the Barker Hall Silent Film Fest. Saturday, October 21, the suspense filled Nosferatu will be shown. Sunday, October 22, is comedy night with Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush. Films will be shown at 7:00 PM at Barker Hall, located at 600 Franklin St., Michigan City, Indiana. The films will be accompanied by live organ and piano music. Advance Tickets for the two night series are $18 per person, available online through Eventbrite.com. Individual tickets are $10 per person at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Trinity Music and Arts Academy, providing free keyboard and vocal training for area youth.

Film lovers attending the festival will turn back the clock to the 1920's golden age of silent films. The films will be shown in the Great Hall of Barker Hall. The Romantic Gothic style building replicates the grandeur of the great movie houses of the silent movie era. Built in 1929, one of the original intended functions of the hall was the showing of silent films. The Film Fest movies will be projected on the original movie screen that was installed for silent films. The Great Hall even includes a theater style balcony and a projection booth. Barker Hall is a multipurpose community and recreation center at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Great Hall is a 3600 square foot oak paneled entertainment space lit by four foot wide tiered chandeliers and 20 ft. tall leaded glass windows. Popcorn and classic movie candy will be available to complete the movie going experience.

Silent films were never truly silent as there was always musical accompaniment. The Barker Hall Silent Film Fest features George Karst performing on the Barker Hall Baldwin theater organ and Baldwin grand piano. Karst is Director of Music for Trinity Episcopal Church and founder of the Trinity Music and Fine Arts Academy. Through the Academy twenty-five area youth receive free piano lessons and vocal training. Members of the Academy perform for many local events.

The two night festival kicks off with the German expressionist film Nosferatu. Before The Twilight Saga or even Bela Lugosi's Dracula, there was Nosferatu. Considered one of the most chilling films ever made, the dark re-telling of the vampire story is now considered a film classic. Subtitled, "A Symphony in Horror," the film was made in 1921 and released in the USA in 1929.

The second night features one of Charlie Chaplin's greatest comedies, The Gold Rush. Chaplin is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. As a filmmaking pioneer, he not only starred in his films, he also produced, directed and wrote the musical scores. Chaplin's character, The Little Tramp, was the most recognized icon of world cinema during the silent film era. Even though most people today have never seen a Chaplin film, the image of a derby, cane, and little mustache is readily recognized as Charlie Chaplin. The Little Tramp character is a childlike, bumbling, but overall good-hearted fellow, who is most famously presented as a vagrant who endeavors to behave with the manners and dignity of a gentleman, despite his actual social status. While he is ready to take paying work when available, he also uses his cunning to get what he needs to survive and escape the authority figures who will not tolerate his antics. The Gold Rush is both funny and poignant, featuring some of Chaplin's most famous comedy scenes.

Trinity Episcopal Church is dedicated to continuing the Barker Hall legacy of Catherine Barker Hickox by providing educational, recreational, cultural and social activities. Barker Hall was a 1929 gift to Trinity Church and the people of Michigan City from the railroad car heiress Catherine Barker Hickox.
Event: Halloween at the Valparaiso Family YMCAhttp://www.nwindianalife.com/home/events/details/58372-halloween-at-the-valparaiso-family-ymcaSat, 21 Oct 2017 18:30:00 -0500
Halloween at the Y is Saturday, October 21, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Valparaiso Family YMCA located at 1201 Cumberland Crossing Dr. Get your costumes ready for a family event which includes: goodies, "Haunted Swamp", Haunted Hallway", face painting, balloon animals, games, crafts, Book/Cake Walk and loads of spooky fun!

Community residents and Y members are invited to come and have a frightening good time! First and most importantly, the tag line for the program is "Running Injury Free". The Galloway success rate of getting runners to the start line well trained and injury free is over 99%. We tailor the program to the individual.

Half Marathon and Marathon program

Training Dates - April 22nd through November 11th

Group Runs - Saturdays 8:00 a.m. (earlier start times as distance gets longer)

Location - Extra Mile Fitness Co.
1330 E. Each of these will be tailored to your specific ability and goals. We first start by running a Magic Mile. From that we will input your results into a formula that will generate times that can be expected for a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. The results are surprisingly accurate. The Magic Mile also gives us the run/walk ratio, a train pace for each training distance, and your goal race pace. There's a ratio for every ability.

Galloway alumni think that the real attraction of running Galloway is a group dynamic that results in lifelong friendships. The Magic Mile is used to form pace groups, runners of similar goals and abilities. A pace group always has at least one knowledgeable alumni to lead the group at the distance and pace with the proper run/walk ratio.

These programs are geared for any fall half marathon or marathon. Training begins April 22 but you are welcome to jump in anytime. Some of our runners are currently training to run the following races of varying distances...

-Air Force (9/16/17)
-Fox Valley (9/17/17)
-Chicago Marathon (10/8/17)
-Marine Corp Marathon (10/22/17)
-Indy Monumental (11/04/17)
-New York City Marathon (11/5/17)

Check us out on Facebook, Galloway Northwest Indiana.
