When we visited New Orleans, we noticed Hispanic Americans had been assimilated into the local mainstream culture before Hurricane Katrina. They were "invisible," Diane Schnell said.
In this new episode of our podcast La Ruta del Voto Latino, I talk to Schnell, news and marketing director of the local Telemundo station, KGLA-TV 42, which has recently launched the cityrsquo;s first-ever Spanish-language newscast.
She says the Latino community is no longer an invisible market in New Orleans, but there's one presidential candidate who's doing more to target local Hispanic communities.

Schnell dice que la comunidad latina local ya no es el mercado invisible que soliacute;a ser, pero soacute;lo uno de los dos principales candidatos a presidente parece interesado en llegar a ellos.

Restaurant owner Geroacute;nimo Barragaacute;n saw ten of his employees arrested and deported in February, some to his native Mexico, others to Guatemala. Santa Rosa County, Florida authorities also went to other businesses, looking for people using stolen Social Security numbers. Since the raid, the already small Hispanic community in the Florida Panhandle town of Milton has all but disappeared.
In this new episode of La Ruta del Voto Latino, Barragaacute;n talks about the raid and his thoughts on the upcoming the election. A committed Baptist, Barragaacute;n supports President Bush and may not vote at all.

In a new episode of La Ruta del Voto Latino-The Road to the Latino Vote, I talk to Juvencio Rocha Peralta, president of the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina.
Latinos started settling in big numbers in the South in the 1970s. Since then they have changed the face of the region. Born in Mexico, Peralta was one of the first migrants to arrive in the area almost three decades ago, and is a longtime community activist in the rural Eastern part of the state. Our conversation focused on issues that concern local Latinos in the 2008 presidential election. Listen to our conversation in this podcast.

In a new episode of La Ruta del Voto Latino-The Road to the Latino Vote, Marcia Espiacute;nola, associate director of community organization El Viacute;nculo Hispano / The Hispanic Liaison, describes the current situation in Siler City, a small town in Chatham County, North Carolina, where the closing of a poultry processing plant left over 800 people out of a job. She says local Latinos, despite their problems, still have time to think about the election: what they want, she adds, is change.

In our second podcast episode, Teresita Jacinto, spokeswoman for Mexicans Without Borders, describes the effects of a crackdown on undocumented immigrants by Prince William County authorities in Northern Virginia.
As I explained in my article about the town, Manassas has seen a sudden decrease of its Latino population, with many abandoned houses, fewer customers for businesses and predictably fewer students at the public schools next September when the school year starts. Jacinto talks about it and about the issues that local Latinos care about as we approach the November presidential election.

As I announced yesterday, I interviewed Francisco Moya, Democratic Party district leader for the borough of Queens and delegate to the Democratic National Convention. I met him at the Ecuadorian Independence Day Parade in Queens.
Ecuadorians are a fast-growing community but they don't have the power of older immigrant groups like Puerto Ricans or Dominicans. They are not always noticed in New York City, as compared with other Latino and non-Latino immigrant groups. But Moya says they are starting to raise their profile. That is a big part of his job.
Here's our conversation.

La presencia ecuatoriana en la ciudad ha crecido raacute;pido, pero auacute;n no tienen el poder poliacute;tico de otros grupos llegados desde antes, como los puertorriquentilde;os y los dominicanos. A veces pasan desapercibidos, si se los compara con otros grupos de inmigrantes, latinos y no. Pero Moya dice que estaacute;n empezando a dar que hablar. Y que eso, justamente, es parte de su trabajo.

We will set out from New York, where Dominicans are one of the biggest Latino groups. This community has grown a lot since the first wave of migration took off in the mid-1960s. What many people don't know is what triggered that migration: a big part of it was the Revolucioacute;n de Abril in 1965, that was defeated with the help of U.S. troops.
Last year, I did a story for WNYC, New York public radio, explaining how many of those revolutionaries ended up in the city. Here it is:
Este viaje comienza en Nueva York, donde una de las comunidades latinas maacute;s grandes es la dominicana, que ha crecido enormemente desde que la gran migracioacute;n comenzoacute; a mediados de los '60. Lo que muchos no saben es coacute;mo empezoacute; esa ola migratoria: una de las razones principales fue la Revolucioacute;n de Abril de 1965, derrotada con la ayuda de tropas estadounidenses.
