Conservation Volunteers New Zealand wishes to appoint a full time Team Leader to assist in the safety, welfare and supervision of volunteers on practical conservation projects.

The successful applicant will have experience in leading teams and a sound understanding of conservation and natural resource management. In addition, the appointee will perform a critical role in effectively retaining our volunteer numbers, possess excellent interpersonal skills with the capacity to train, engage and motivate volunteers.

A full driver’s licence and level 2 First Aid are essential criteria, but willingness to also obtain Defensive Driving, OH&S Level 3 and Ministry of Justice check is required.

Key Selection Criteria

Demonstrated experience as an effective Team Leader.
Well developed interpersonal communication skills and an ability to liaise with people from diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated capacity to engage team members in learning new skills and providing on-going coaching of team members.

Located in the outer Hauraki Gulf, 80 km from Auckland, Little Barrier Island is this country’s first Nature Reserve and provides a glimpse of what primeval New Zealand would have looked like. This spectacular island is steep, rugged and heavily forested. It provides an important refuge for many threatened and endangered species and with the eradication of kiore is now free of all introduced predators.

The island's 350 indigenous plant species are threatened by a range of weeds and continued effort is needed to keep these under control. To assist with this important work, the Warkworth Great Barrier Area office is looking for applicants to work and live on this island for 3 months from early September 2012.

The successful applicants will be able to demonstrate:

A sound knowledge of field delivery work with particular emphasis on weed control
Backcountry experience, bush skills and fitness

We are looking for someone to become the Team Leader for the biodiversity team based on the Chatham Islands. This is a permanent full time position with the primary focus being to oversee the work programmes on the south of the main Chatham Island.

The Threats Section of the Science & Technical Group is seeking an experienced and motivated fieldworker to join the team on a fixed term basis for 12 months, working in the Northern Te Urewera Mainland Island. This exciting role has arisen because of the establishment of a four year research programme to trial self-resetting predator traps on an operational scale at several sites around New Zealand.

Are you interested in helping with botanical field work this summer?

Up until June 2012 New Zealand Forest Surveys measures 20 m x 20 m forest monitoring plots to monitor changes in bio-diversity and carbon storage, at remote forest and scrub sites. We currently have six staff and require two more competent botanical field staff. Initial training will occur in Pureora Forest Park in April.

You must have relevant tertiary training specialising in Botanical Surveys. You must demonstrate that you are prepared to work in remote locations for extended periods while based in primitive tent camping situations. The work is extremely demanding and only suitable for people completely committed to a career in field botany.

Ideal candidates will:

have a genuine interest in learning New Zealand botany;
have great plant identification skills (South American, European or New Zealand plants);
be physically fit;
be mature;
and be very strong team members.

A good team member is someone who places other’s welfare along with their own, they will be team-outcome focused, organised, conscientious, honest, reliable and have well-developed and mature personalities. Serious commitment is required for the entire summer, and there will be opportunities for successful field botanists in following summers.

Teams will be spending long periods living and working in difficult conditions. Tramping and camping experience is essential and should be clearly summarised in applications. Plant identification experience is essential and should also be highlighted in applications. Field workers measure native forest and shrubland using a standard protocol (http://nvs.landcareresearch.co.nz/html/NVSmanual.aspx). Identification of all higher plants is with 100\% accuracy.

Working in remote locations, in tough conditions, and for long hours requires special people. Dawn to dusk work is common. There is a need to be flexible, because field trips are often planned with little notice and only finish when the work is finished. Trips will often be less than a week, but in some instances will be several weeks duration camping in the forest.

The Kaimai Connection project is part of Forest and Birds Kaimai Mamaku Campaign.

The Kaimai Connection aims to restore birdsong and native wildlife to a corridor of protection linking the Tauranga harbour in the Bay of Plenty, to the Waihou River in the Waikato.

We seek applications from individuals with strong communication skills; experience in forest restoration projects, working independently, and co-ordinating volunteers; working with the community and an interest and knowledge of environmental issues.

This position is a fixed term part – time position (3 days a week). The position is initially for 9 months however it is hoped that further funding can be secured to make the position full time. Hours of work across the week are flexible; however availability for weekend volunteer management is required at times.

Key tasks for the position include:

1. Manage all aspects of the Forest and Bird Aongatete Forest Restoration Project. The project area (approx 720 hectares) is immediately adjacent to the existing Aongatete Forest Restoration Trust (approx 280 hectares). Responsibilities include:

raising awareness of the project within the wider Tauranga community.
volunteer co-ordination and support.
Implementing the projects health and safety plan.
logistics management, e.g. acquiring field equipment such as bait stations and toxins.
oversight of the monitoring programme. This will include both results and outcomes based monitoring.
administration of all contracts.

The role would also include some field work if required, e.g. refilling bait stations.

2. Implement and coordinate the pilot projects ‘Land for Wildlife’ and ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ within the Kaimai Connection area.

3. Support the Kaimai Mamaku Campaign Steering committee in other aspects of the Kaimai Connection Project as required (see attached description).

4. Support funding applications / seeking sponsorship for the Kaimai Connection Project.

The Chatham Islands Area office is seeking a temporary staff member keen to experience the Chatham's distinctive lifestyle and undertake work related to plants. The employment period offered is from 7 March 2012 (somewhat flexible) to 3 September 2012. The main focus of the work is on the threatened plants programme but may involve other programmes including dune restoration and weed control.

The Work

Threatened plant work

The main part of this work will be the planting of nursery raised stock & sowing of seeds. Other work aspects may include; monitoring of wild populations, work in the nursery and processing data.

March –April a number of days monitoring wild plant populations; generally day trips to a variety of locations. This may include assessment of revegetation plantings success.
Coinciding & following the above period concentrate on planting nursery stock and sowing seeds directly into suitable habitat in protected areas (conservation areas, reserves & covenants). Plants are established into marked plots and a planting form completed for the work.
Some data entry into a threatened plant spreadsheet relating to survey & monitoring records and planting sheets.
Nursery weeding/watering/fertilising/pesticide application, organisation and bagging up.

Mangere Island revegetation

Participate in the revegetation programme on Mangere Island should this coincide with this period. Assist with preparation of plants, food & equipment, quarantine requirements for the trip & safety briefings for other participants.

Dune restoration

Weed spraying especially of marram grass at two project sites at Tioriori and Mairangi. Hand pulling of sea rocket. Planting of pingao and megaherbs in the foredune.

Point Munning Covenant

Assist with iceplant spraying and/or undertake follow-up planting of Carex trifida and Hebe chathamica.

Other work as may develop from time to time including work not directly related to the above that will familiarize you with field work sites.

Applicants

Applicants need to be of a hardy and self sufficient disposition as there may be a significant time spent working on your own.

You also need to be:

Competent in the outdoors; walking and working away from tracks. Able to cope with moving through shrubland, fernland and around bush pockets and damp ground.
Able to cope with changeable weather in the course of a day. The Chatham's weather is regularly cool, windy and showery (it can be nice also!).
You should be able to carry reasonable loads, for example pack loads of PB3 plants cross-country to get to planting sites
A driver's licence is essential and an ATV qualification highly desirable. You will need to drive on gravel roads daily with trailers and sometimes cross rough farmland to get to protected areas. Trailers may be loaded with ATV's and plants.
Reasonable at plant identification and be interested in learning the main plant species where you are working – there are few trees/shrubs to learn.
A competent record taker- for plant monitoring (plant numbers by age class, location, habitat conditions & threats etc), completing planting forms and spraying records etc.
Confident with or able to pick up using GPS (marking & finding wpts)/use of map & compass.
Competent in use of basic computer software particularly word and excel
A weed spraying qualification and experience would be an advantage.

Our Ecological Restoration team works in native bush and other natural areas all over the Auckland Region and beyond. From coastal forest at Piha to secluded streams in the Hunua Ranges and some urban reserves between, we work on a wide variety of contracts for Councils and DOC, and we are looking for a new Ecological Restoration field worker to join our team.

The focus of the role is to undertake restoration and protection of native bush and natural areas, primarily weed control. Also some survey, animal pest control and monitoring, native planting and nursery work. Work includes the use of herbicides, hand tools, potentially chainsaws and scrubcutters, gps, ropes (abseiling), traps and poison baits, and experience in any of these would be an advantage. This position is based in Waitakere, however we do have some contracts that require us to work away from home for up to a week, and so applicants must be willing to do this from time to time.

The ideal applicant will enjoy exploring NZ’s bush, and will have a moderate to high level of fitness. We work in some challenging terrain and often carry 10-15L packs. Some knowledge of weeds is essential, and knowledge of weed control methods and native plant identification is desirable. Prior training such as First Aid, Growsafe, Chainsaw Safety and Tree Felling would also be an advantage, however full training will be given to the successful applicant.

Pay rate starting at $15-20 p/hr depending on skills and experience. Start date is as negotiable, mid-March at the latest.

The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. The Ramsar Convention is independent of the United Nations system of environmental treaties and reports only to its own Contracting Parties, or Member States. The Secretariat operations are administered by IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The Convention Secretariat, which currently comprises 21 employees, is co-located with the world headquarters of IUCN in Gland (near Geneva), Switzerland.

The Secretariat initiated a regional internship programme in 1997 which allows four interns to assist the respective Senior Regional Advisors in their day to day work within the Secretariat. The tasks will rarely involve field work. Exceptionally interns could be asked to visit projects or participate in meetings abroad. There will also be opportunities to attend international meetings held in Geneva and to become acquainted with other international agencies based there.

With an upper age limit for applicants of 30 years old, the post offers an opportunity for young graduates to become acquainted with the workings of an intergovernmental treaty dealing with the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Candidates should be prepared to provide services for a period of at least 12 months. The assignment will be subject to a two-month probationary period. Along with at least five years practical experience in amenity horticulture and previous team leadership, you will also need a proven ability to balance the demands of multiple stakeholders. It'd be great if you have botanic garden experience, but it may be that your relevant experience is within private or public gardens or the landscape sector.
