USU Audiology Humanitarian Mission Fundraiser

Hello everyone,

As most of you know, the audiology department goes on a humanitarian mission every year. This year we are going to go to Costa Rica. We are going to visit several schools and clinics, some of which we went to a few years ago. Of course, the students pay some out of pocket and depend on fundraising efforts and donations to get us all there every year.

This year, we are putting on a fundraising benefit dinner for the mission! We are hosting this dinner at Hamilton's Steak and Seafood on February 9th at 6:00. Tickets are $30, $20 with a student ID and can be purchased at the front desk of the Communicative Disorders Lillywhite building. Please feel free to forward this to everyone and anyone you think would like to help support us. Thanks so much for all your support!

How I find things

So last week a friend of mine asked "How do you find so many random things on the internet?" and I asked her "How do you not?".

Here are some of the ways I find things on the internet:

Subscribe to email updates and newsletters for companies or organizations that I like.
Bookmark sites that have useful resources, and scan them for new information when I have nothing else to do.
Network (ie, don't just like but actively participate) with interesting websites, artists, companies, and people and really pay attention to what they have to say.
Listen to the radio. It seems like everything I hear on the radio is followed by a website. So whether I'm rocking out in my car to X96 on my way to work or chilling to NPR on my way home, I'm mentally cataloging what I hear and I check it out in my leisure time.
Stumbleupon...embrace it.
All my facebook friends. In the grand scheme of things I have a fairly limited field of facebook friends, less than 100. But I don't limit their feeds, I subscribe to everything they want to post and they never disappoint.
Wikipedia addiction. So say I want to find out more about Henry VIII, which leads me through pages about the British royals, which leads me to a page about fox hunting, which takes me to a page about the band Fleet Foxes, which takes me to a page about the band First Aid Kit. Does king Henry VIII have anything to do with the band First Aid Kit? No, but I've learned wiki tangents can take you to some pretty amazing places if you'll just go with the flow.
Having no life.

Ok this could take all night, I'll just say that I want one of everything on that site.

The point is, there are millions of interesting and cool things to be found on the internet, all you need is curiosity and a computer with an internet connect to get started. I may not be able to scuba dive to discover ship wrecks, or ski across Antarctica by myself, or ride a marwari stallion in Rajasthan, or see my favorite bands live in concert. But I can do the next best thing and read about all this stuff, see photos, watch videos, and listen to the music almost the second that they happen, all I have to do is search.

New Cafe Bakery Coming To Logan

Watch out Old Grist Mill, Great Harvest, Hazels, and Kneaders...there is going to be a new(er) Bakery/Deli on the block.

Apple Spice Cafe and Bakery is set to open a franchise here in Logan. The sign says they are opening in Spring 2012, but wasn't more specific than that. A cursory search of their corporate website didn't turn up any clues either.

I don't know whether it is ironic or appropriate that they are moving into the space next to Expercom "Apple Specialists".

I don't know how many of these chain Bakery/Deli places the valley can support. There have been persistent rumors over the last couple of months that Paradise Bakery is weighing a foray into the Cache Valley market and has done some preliminary market research...but those are just rumors.

New Music Tuesday

I am really excited about the new album being released Tuesday by First Aid Kit.

This retro sounding folk country duo is made up of 2 sisters from Sweden, Johanna and Klara Söderberg, who started out singing covers from bands like Fleet Foxes and Bright Eyes. Johanna, born in 1990, plays keyboard and auto harp. Klara, born in 1993, plays the guitar. They both write and sing.

First Aid Kit's first release was the EP Drunken Trees, in the fall of 2008. Their first full length album, The Big Black & Blue, was released in 2010. They currently have an extensive tour scheduled in support of their latest release "The Lion's Roar".

Ultimate Chocolate Lovers Cookies

With Valentines Day coming up I've been inspired to experiment with chocolate. Sometimes you just want to cram as much chocolate into a cookie as physically possible. I've come up with the following recipe to try and satisfy the chocolate lovers in my life. These cookies are small in size but big in flavor, perfect for dunking in a glass of really cold milk.

Active Prep Time: 30 minutes
Inactive Prep Time: 2 hours
Baking Time: 10 to 11 minutes per cookie sheet
Yield: Approximately 60 to 70 cookies depending on size.

Ultimate Chocolate Lovers Cookies

Ingredients:

2.5 cups Flour (Note on the flour. I live at a higher altitude, if you live closer to sea level you may want to cut back on the flour by a few tablespoons.)
1/2 cup Cocoa
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 cup Butter (1 stick, warmed to room temperature)
1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
2 Eggs (warmed to room temperature)
1 T Vanilla Extract

1/2 cup Milk
2 T Butter
1 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips

1/2 cup White Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup Milk Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup Extra Dark Chocolate Chips

Directions:

Sift together the first 5 ingredients and set aside.

In the bowl of your stand mixer cream together the butter and sugars until fluffy (about 3 or 4 minutes). Slowly beat in the eggs and vanilla, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed, until you have a light colored and thoroughly blended mixture.

Place the semisweet chocolate chips in a heat proof bowl and set aside. In a double boiler heat the milk and butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it begins to simmer. Turn off the heat and pour the milk over the chocolate chips and allow to sit for a few minutes to melt the chocolate, then whisk until all the chocolate is melted and you have a smooth and shiny liquid chocolate.

Alternate adding half of the dry mixture and half of the melted chocolate to the contents of the stand mixer bowl until everything is combined. DO NOT OVER MIX! The dough should be fairly thick with a slightly sticky texture. ( If you over mix after adding the dry ingredients you will develop the gluten in the flour and make a cookie with a tough consistency, mix on low just until the flour disappears into the dough. Also do not be tempted to add more flour if the dough looks runnier than you think it should be, this will dry out the cookie. Even if the dough seems really soft it will firm up in the fridge.)

Gently mix in the three different kinds of chocolate chips and distribute them evenly through the dough.

Turn the dough out onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Wrap the dough up tight and allow it to rest in the refrigerator for a minimum of two hours. It can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days before it needs to be baked or frozen.

Once it is completely chilled and firm, remove the plastic wrap and roll into tablespoon sized balls.

Preheat the oven to 350F. Place the cookie dough balls on a silpat lined cookie sheet, I can usually fit about 18 to a tray, and bake for 10 to 11 minutes.

Remove them from the oven when the top of the dough starts to crack. Let them rest on the cookie sheet outside of the oven for a minute before placing them on a cooling rack. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before eating. Best served warm, fresh out of the oven. Store any leftover cookies in an airtight Ziploc bag for up to a week. When they are fresh out of the oven they have a soft and fudgy texture. Once they are full cooled overnight they have a lighter, cake like but slightly chewy texture.

You can also place the unbaked cookie dough balls in a plastic bag and freezer them for baking at a later date. You can bake straight from frozen using the same baking instructions above, but you may have to add a few minutes to the baking time.

Come join local avalanche forecaster Toby Weed for a one evening, one field day avalanche awareness class specifically for snowmobilers. FORGOTTEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD
The exhibit, assembled by Special Collections and Archives Photograph Curator Daniel Davis, explores the history of the Union Pacific Railroad through photographs of A. J. Russell. The exhibit presents several of the well-known and idealized scenes of the railroad’s construction (1868-69) as photographed by Russell while under the commission of the Union Pacific Railroad. In addition to the well-known images, the exhibit presents examples of stereo-views taken by Russell and other photographers that offer a more complete and less sanitized version of the railroad’s history. FORGOTTEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD
The exhibit, assembled by Special Collections and Archives Photograph Curator Daniel Davis, explores the history of the Union Pacific Railroad through photographs of A. J. Russell. The exhibit presents several of the well-known and idealized scenes of the railroad’s construction (1868-69) as photographed by Russell while under the commission of the Union Pacific Railroad. In addition to the well-known images, the exhibit presents examples of stereo-views taken by Russell and other photographers that offer a more complete and less sanitized version of the railroad’s history. A reception for the exhibit is planned Feb. 15 in conjunction with a lecture by Davis for the Friends of Merrill-Cazier Library. Where: The Merrill-Cazier Library. POSTER EXHIBIT: DISABILITY HISTORY
The exhibit includes panels that outline the history of disability and advocacy. This walk through 3000 years of the human condition is remarkably detailed. MARION R. HYDE EXHIBIT
This exhibition will highlight the most recent work of Utah State’s emeritus professor of art, Marion R. Hyde. Professor Hyde retired from the Department of Art in 2002 after more than 33 years of dedicated service that included 12 years as department head. Since retirement, Professor Hyde has been working in oil and pastel to create images that both represent and abstract the Utah landscape. We're pleased to present a wide selection of his best works to you during this opening exhibition of the 2012 season. An opening social will be held Jan. 18 at 4:30 p.m. in the Tippets Exhibit Hall. MARION R. HYDE EXHIBIT
This exhibition will highlight the most recent work of Utah State’s emeritus professor of art, Marion R. Hyde. Professor Hyde retired from the Department of Art in 2002 after more than 33 years of dedicated service that included 12 years as department head. Since retirement, Professor Hyde has been working in oil and pastel to create images that both represent and abstract the Utah landscape. SACRED CHANTING WITH VISITING MUSICIAN LERAINE
