Polygon's Open House

I spent my Friday night in Engineering – and had a great time. Though this sentence seems fundamentally wrong, here at the University of Wisconsin, we managed to bring over 370 students back to the engineering campus after 8pm.

The Engineering Centers Building (ECB) Open House was a new event that took place this year at the end of January. The goal was to create a non-alcoholic alternative, allow engineering organizations to showcase or recruit for their org, and just to have fun!

The event ran from 8pm-12am and was packed with activities. If there is one thing that will get students to come to an event, it's free food. We served 72 feet of Subway party subs, ice cream, and 240 liters of soda! Though everyone enjoyed the food, there were many more activities to keep the students engaged. The night started off with engineering org exhibits where different orgs held booths advertising their student org. As the night went on, we had all kinds of games throughout the building including a poker tournament, rock band, and Nintendo 64 on the projectors in conference rooms, board games, an unusually large game of twister, karaoke, and more! Some of the bigger attractions were playing laser tag on the catwalks on the upper levels of our engineering building and an inflatable velcro wall!

Bringing a large variety of entertainment that many people hadn't seen since post prom in high school captured the attention of enough engineers that they decided not to go out to the parties and bars for one night, and instead take over their usual study space and spend hours with those they wouldn't otherwise see. If you're looking for something fun to do with your school, I would recommend planning an open house party, and so would anyone else who attended our event.

UW-Madison: Polygon holds spring book exchange

Madison, WI - In efforts to keep book prices low, on the first Wednesday of our semester, January 20th, Polygon held its biannual book exchange. This is an opportunity we set up for the students in the College of Engineering so they can buy and sell books from each other. Polygon, along with other student orgs on campus, ran the book exchange from 8 AM to 5 PM, during which over 800 books were up for sale, which means that each semester for the last 3 years our book exchange has been growing. We set the suggested selling price at 75% of the used book store price so both the seller and buyer end up with more money in their pockets.

University of Illinois Looking Forward to Engineering Open House 2010

URBANA, IL - In just a few months, the Illinois campus and Engineering Council will be gearing up for the annual Engineering Open House (EOH), a student-led event featuring two days of exciting exhibits and captivating competitions that showcase the talent and ingenuity of engineering students. The exposition attracts thousands of visitors to the Illinois campus each year and stands as the largest event of its kind in the country. EOH brings together students, faculty, and corporate sponsors to feature cutting-edge innovation in the fields of science and technology. EOH 2010: "Integrating Knowledge, Deriving Genius" will be held March 12th and 13th.

Last year, Mythbuster Grant Imahara spoke about his experiences as an engineer for popular media icons like R2D2 and the Energizer Bunny and his favorite projects on Mythbusters. Two years ago, the main event was a concert featuring a continuum keyboard hooked up to a pair of Tesla Coils. This year's entertainment will be announced soon on the EOH website.

Another major feature at EOH is the Jerry Sanders Robotics Creative Design Competition, where college robotics teams compete in a new game each year on a large course designed and constructed by the Jerry Sanders Design Competition committee. This year's game features a game of tic-tac-toe played with helium balloons. The contest lasts two days, includes prizes, and attracts engineering students from across the country, along with teams from Canada and Mexico in recent years. The AMD Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition annually provides a fun atmosphere and outlet for creative minds.

UW-Madison: Polygon hosts Engineering Differential Tuition Forum

MADISON, WI - On October 12th, the Polygon Student Differential Committee hosted a forum to discuss and answer questions about Differential Tuition. Desired improvements to the College of Engineering were used to update the Undergraduate Student "Wants" document, reflecting current thoughts on important areas in the college.
