Then, on Friday, he lost the man who, in little more than a decade, built MailOnline, a digital business now valued at more than twice as much as his 125-year-old newspaper empire.

For at least half of the last century most of Britain's national newspapers were owned or run by families headed by Lords. To be more precise, their Lordships Astor, Beaverbrook, Camrose, Kemsley, Rothermere and Thomson. Now Rothermere is the only one left standing. His dynasty is the oldest, based on the Daily Mail, founded in 1896.

Accordi ng to the conventional wisdom about the merciless newspaper game, particularly as practiced in London, Rothermere's business should have been roadkill long ago.

So why didn't that happen?

A SAVIOR IN NEW YORK

The current Lord Rothermere is 53 years old. For a figure who could, if he chose, wield a lot of political clout, he makes very little noise.

The family has never supplied inspiration for a Succession kind of dynastic soap opera, as the Murdochs have. And yet last year the Daily Mail overtook Murdoch's tabloid The Sun as the UK's top-selling paper (this year Murdoch had to write down the value of the daily and Sunday editions of The Sun to zero because of the costs of settling phone hacking cases). Over the last five years the company Rothermere heads, the Daily Mail and General Trust, has been quietly transforming itself. He intends soon to return it to being a family business, by canceling its stock market listing and become a private limited c ompany.

But most of the credit for the company's survival has to go to a title that has never been in print, MailOnline, and the blowhard figure who created it, Martin Clarke, whose exit on Friday surprised the whole media world, and remains puzzling.

Story continues

MailOnline was launched by Clarke in London 2007, but that was before the iPhone, the iPad and social media together led to a revolution in the way advertising was sold. The turning point came in 2011, when the site established a larger editorial base in Manhattan's SoHo district, just as so-called programmatic advertising technology was being pioneered by BuzzFeed and Facebook. It was smart timing, because the old Madison Avenue ad agency culture was looking as dated as the magazine and newspaper publishing culture that it traded with. For the first time, using digital platforms, advertisers could measure the effectiveness of their ads directly based on the number of clicks they generated. It was the end of the long and delirious Mad Men party: algorithms bought and sold advertising without needing a three-martini lunch to clinch a contract.

At MailOnline, Clarke grasped the significance of this as a path to making the business profitable. Of course, this meant abandoning the idea that the worth of a story lay in its news value. Sometimes, a dozen different versions of the same story (or ad) were posted to see which combination of words, headline and pictures drew the most clicks and, therefore, captured an audience in line with what advertisers wanted.

It was a ruthless descent to a new dark art that was anathema to legacy newsmen—but not to Clarke. He had long shown his chops as a print editor with a ruthlessly competitive style but now transformed himself into a so-called "digital native," talking the talk and walking the walk. He designed a new kind of hyper-tabloid that reduced news to a thread of staccato bursts of text sprinkled with celebrity eye ca ndy—as well as unrelenting coverage of the greatest of all soap operas, the travails of the House of Windsor. (There were complaints that under the banner of "aggregation" the site was freely plagiarizing other journalists' work, even putting invented bylines on the stories.)

Soon, MailOnline became a phenomenal mother lode for Rothermere. It now claims 24.9 million unique visitors a month (BuzzFeed claims 38 million). In the last 12 months its revenue has grown by 14 percent while the company's print advertising revenue fell by 15 percent and the circulation of the papers fell by 6 percent. In May, JP Morgan Chase valued MailOnline at almost $730 million—more than twice the value of all Rothermere's print titles.

Martin Clarke Steps Down as Daily Mail Online Editor and Publisher

But Clarke was only one part of the New York revolution. The other was the American CEO of MailOnline, Richard Caccappolo. Before Clarke's departure, Caccappolo was appoint ed CEO of the London-based Daily Mail Media Group, and at that moment it seemed that the leadership of the company's journalistic development had passed jointly to him and Clarke. As cultural shocks go, this looked like the biggest in the London newspaper world since Murdoch arrived in 1968 looking for a newspaper to buy.

The first result of the change was a shake-up in the Daily Mail's newsroom. The editor of the Daily Mail, Geordie Greig, departed after only three years in the job—apparently much to his surprise and displeasure. The editor of the Mail on Sunday, Ted Verity, was given command of the two titles. Superficially it looked like a sensible rationalization: the two papers had feuded needlessly with each other. In fact, it was but a surface ripple covering a far more consequential review of the business.

The Americanization of the business did not come as a surprise to one of the shrewdest followers of UK media, Claire Enders of Enders Analysis: "It sta rted a generation ago," she told me. She believes that the prime mover of Rothermere's strategy is the man who has been the company's CEO since 2016, Paul Zwillenberg. Rothermere first met Zwillenberg at Duke University, where they were both students in the 1980s.

Zwillenberg has, like his boss, kept under the radar. When he left Duke he was something of a techy nerd with a strong interest in college basketball, having covered it for the college newspaper. The two things—tech and sports—combined into what for him was something of a Damascene revelation. In 1996, when he suddenly appeared in London to launch a digital operation for Rothermere, he told the British media weekly Campaign that his favorite website was GoDuke.com: "Duke has one of the best teams in the U.S. and this web site keeps me on top of everything…what I like best is when you combine live audio with the live scoring services from the likes of ESPN and CBS SportsLine."

Having established early digital platforms for Rothermere, Zwillenberg left London in 2000 to join the Boston Consulting Group, whose analysts are highly rated company doctors, where he was known for his belief that the future of much print media was, basically, go digital or die. And, while in America, he remained a strategic voice in Rothermere's ear as his prediction hit newspapers with lethal results, stripping them of one of their main revenue sources, advertising.

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE

The new strategy has brought to a head a problem that was becoming more and more acute. The tabloid idiom of MailOnline is clearly not compatible with the middlebrow journalism of the London papers. In fact, many in the London newsroom look upon Clarke's creation as a satanic fetus implanted in the saintly corpus of traditional journalism. That's not to say that the Daily Mail newsroom has ever been an oasis of dignity and professional composure. From 1992 to 2018 it was under the rule of Paul Dacr e, an editor who confused short-fused belligerence with leadership. He shamelessly embodied every trait of the unreconstructed newsroom tyrant, spitting out the "c-word" in rebuke of both genders, day and night. (According to MailOnline insiders, Clarke, who revered Dacre, shared his management style.)

Nonetheless, like the editors who successfully built Murdoch's tabloids, Dacre created a voice in print that was an extension of himself and the paper found its moment, with the surge of raw Little England nativism that, against all expectations, produced the victory for Brexit. At the same time, following the industry trend, his paper's circulation fell from more than 2 million copies a day in 2010 to 960,000 today. The newspaper's readership is aging, while the website's audience is younger and wealthier.

Analysts agree that the decline in print is irreversible. In responding to it, Rothermere and Zwillenberg have to figure out how to harmonize under one roof two such divergent tones in journalism as MailOnline and the Daily Mail. There is also the "church and state" issue. Print newsrooms are traditionally impervious to advertising pressures and strong editors are supposed to uphold this principle. But MailOnline freely copulates with advertisers—that's part of its business model. Clarke embodied the roles of both editor and publisher in a way that few other print-born journalists have managed. The difficulty of this ethical and cultural divide in the newsrooms is expressed in their content selection: although MailOnline pays for access to all the print papers' content, 90 percent of what it publishes is self-generated.

Media analyst Peter Kreisky, chairman of the Kreisky Media Consultancy, told me: "The price of nurturing these clashing cultures will be high. Any attempt to fully integrate them will dilute their individual energy and focus. They appeal to very different audiences. MailOnline competes in the 24/7 minu te-by-minute news as click-bait space with Facebook, BuzzFeed and Google, a tough game, while it's far from clear how traditional Daily Mail journalism can sustain a digital base of sufficient scale. There is already brand confusion, between the digital and print versions. I can see, though, that taking the company private frees of them of the short-termism of quarterly earnings reporting and gives them the time to re-position the declining newspaper business—that's important because the Daily Mail association underlies the credibility of the branding, for both print and the digital sites."

THE BIRTH OF A DYNASTY

The Rothermere dynasty has its roots in late Victorian London, amid the tangle of print shops and publishers around Fleet Street, the eponymous locus of national journalism. Public literacy was exploding, and with it came a huge appetite for self-improving knowledge. Two brothers, Alfred and Harold Harmsworth, published cheap weeklies that delivered gene ral knowledge and gossip in bite-sized portions. Tipped off that one of London's nine evening newspapers was for sale, the Harmsworths decided to make the leap into news and bought the paper, the Evening News and Post, at a bargain price. They set about injecting it with their own flair for snappy copy and headlines—including an early version of news aggregation by converting ticker-tape news agency copy to what they headlined as "News Flashes Brought by the Electric Wire from All Quarters of the Compass."

Two years later, in 1896, the brothers launched a morning paper, the Daily Mail. Harold, the Scrooge of the business, thought news too costly a product and remained aloof during the run-up to the launch, expecting it to flop. Alfred had a deeper mind. He understood that news was knowledge and said he wanted a "writers' paper" with its own foreign correspondents. At launch the paper had an editorial staff of just 14. Alfred predicted a first day sale of 100,000. In fact, it sold 397,215 copies. "We've struck a gold-mine" exulted Alfred. His editorial formula shrewdly fed the needs of the aspirational Victorian middle class or, as Alfred said in a promotion, "clerks or other gentlemen in regular employment." His editors were told that the Daily Mail should embrace "conciseness and compactness" to satisfy "busy men." This became an enduring and extremely profitable template that few other London papers matched.

In 1905, Alfred Harmsworth was anointed with the title of Lord Northcliffe, becoming the prototypical British newspaper baron, as politicians, rattled by the way the new mass market dailies swayed public opinion, handed out peerages to their owners, hoping to keep them onside. Harold subsequently became the first Lord Rothermere.

But Northcliffe was not easy for any government to silence. He had acquired a Citizen Kane level of egomania, convinced of his own rightness as a world authority. After World War I he traveled around Europe lecturing politicians on how to build a new world order. The last months of his life were bizarre. Falling ill in the early summer of 1922, he drafted a will in which he said he was in good mental health but suffering "from one dangerous disease, Indian jungle fever and another unknown to any doctors in Great Britain, poisoning by ice cream supplied on the Belgian frontier." To provide him with better air he was moved to a hut on the roof of a neighbor's Mayfair mansion. He died, aged 57, on August 14. There were rumors that he died as a result of syphilis, but it was later established that he suffered from a heart disease, endocarditis.

The title of Lord Northcliffe died with him and Rothermere, always the hard-nosed bean-counter, took over the business looking every inch what he was, a self-made plutocrat and political reactionary with his own wealth preservation always a priority. He also had a short attention span and capricious political ideas that the Daily Mail editors had to follow. Nonetheless, by 1928 the Daily Mail was selling close to 2 million copies a day, with Lord Beaverbrook, another baron with a political agenda (in his case a more consistent one, promoting the British Empire as a saintly enterprise) building up the Daily Express as a serious challenger.

In the 1930s Rothermere fell under the spell of Princess Stephanie Hohenlohe, of the remnant German royal family. She operated in London as a kind of one-woman honey trap for Hitler. She recognized in Rothermere a malleable mind and, within months of meeting him, had converted him to the Nazi cause on the basis that Hitler was all that stood between Europe and the Soviet hordes. There is a photograph of Rothermere in 1937 looking happy in the company of Hitler and Josef Goebbels while a Daily Mail foreign correspondent stands ready to take dictation.

A year later Rothermere suddenly dropped Hohenlohe. She sued him for breach of contract and threatened to reveal the paper trail of his dealings with Hitler, including his antisemitism. She lost the case but Rothermere paid her costs and made sure she was shipped out to America to keep her quiet just before the outbreak of war. Rothermere then pivoted, claiming that all along his plan was to delay war as long as possible to allow British rearmament. Few people bought it. His private papers for this period have never been released and were probably destroyed. Rothermere died in Bermuda on Nov. 6, 1940. Just before he lost consciousness he said, "There is nothing I can do to help my country now." He was succeeded by his son, Esmond Harmsworth.

HOW EMPIRES DIE

The second Lord Rothermere was no visionary, but he was a safe pair of hands at a time when British dailies, because of the compactness of the country, were able to build circulations in the millions. I first saw Esmond's style up close in 1964, when the newest of Britain's press barons, Lord Thomso n, threw a lavish banquet at London's Dorchester Hotel for the oldest, Lord Beaverbrook, to celebrate his 85th birthday. (Both were Canadian.) I was a guest because I had worked as an editor at Beaverbrook's Daily Express and was then an editor at the Sunday Times after Thomson bought it from another baron, Lord Kemsley.

Beaverbrook was frail. In his prime he had had the swagger of a man sure of his power, a confidant of Winston Churchill and a hands-on proprietor—as much a journalist as a businessman—who bombarded his editors with ideas and instructions 24/7. He had recently told one of his editors that Churchill was dying from the head down and he was dying from the feet up. (The editor guessed, correctly, that he had cancer.) When he arrived for the banquet, I was shocked: he was physically shrunken, his own dark diagnosis evident because the only recognizable remnant of his forceful presence was his head, the broad dome, the saturnine glare, and the firm, rasping v oice summoning the last reserves of energy.

The keynote speaker was Rothermere, a tall and courtly figure who was, alas, also a dull and unimaginative speaker. Ironically, this was brought home to the audience when he said of Beaverbrook that he had "ceaseless drive, untiring energy." And, as weak as he was, Beaverbrook, who followed him, went on to prove it, in a far longer speech that was feisty and mesmerizing, ending with an attack on those who wanted to censor the press, people whose mantra was, he said, "Don't ever print anything about me that I wouldn't want people to read."

Within weeks, Beaverbrook was dead. And, as things turned out, this was the beginning of a lesson in how swiftly newspaper dynasties could flame out. The banquet coincided with the peak of the Daily Express's success, when it was selling more than four million copies a day. With Beaverbrook's death the paper lost its driving spirit and never recovered it. His heirs had no flair for the business and sold it in 1977 to the owners of the Cunard shipping line. Roy Thomson, who had awakened a moribund business and turned the Sunday Times into a journalistic powerhouse, acquired the daily The Times and, with it, a bundle of problems, including endless conflicts with the print unions. He died in 1976 and his heir, tired of the intractable resistance to change, sold the papers to Rupert Murdoch, the rare newspaper proprietor who never became a Lord.

The Daily Mail reached a peak daily circulation of 2.6 million in the 1960s. Esmond, the second Lord Rothermere, fell victim to Alzheimer's and, in 1970, handed control to his heir, Vere Harmsworth, who turned out to have a far greater flair for the news business than his father. He took two decisions that were crucial to the future. First, he converted the paper from a broadsheet to the tabloid format, but one with a middlebrow style, something new in London. Sales rose rapidly. He became the third Lord Rothe rmere when his father died in 1978. In 1982, he launched the Mail on Sunday, another winning move. He was still highly engaged in the business in 1998 when he suddenly died of a heart attack, at the age of 73, while dining with his heir, Jonathan.

The fourth Lord Rothermere learned much from his father. He understood how important it was to find strong, individualistic editors, pay them well and leave them to do the job. When he came under political pressure to change editorial policy he invariably backed the editors even if, like Dacre, they were a law unto themselves. But that generation of Fleet Street editor, steeped in the language and lore of print, can seem like a dinosaur now when the competition for eyeballs has permanently changed the rules of engagement in the news space.

The Harmsworths have played a very long game very well. Looked at from the perspective of history, it could be said that they have now circled back to the guiding editorial tenets of Alfred H armsworth, to "conciseness and compactness." His fortune was founded on the Victorian equivalent of click bait, short and snappy pellets of text flavored with drama and sensation raked up from many unattributed sources. But the other side of Harmsworth, his belief that news was knowledge and that a newspaper could and should provide an education in how the world worked—that side is clearly not part of the mission of MailOnline.

A collision of the two journalisms seems inevitable. Without Clarke's dominating influence, the outcome is harder to predict.

Read more at The Daily Beast.

Got a tip? They join travellers from 10 southern African countries.

The move is in response to concerns about the spread of the omicron variant of coronavirus. It follows 21 cases of omicron reported in England that are linked to travel from Africa's most populous nation.

Mr Javid tweeted: "In light of the most recent data we are taking further action to slow the incursion of the omicron variant.

"From 4am Monday, only UK and Irish citizens and residents travelling from Nigeria will be allowed entry and must isolate in a managed quarantine facility.

"And, from 4am Tuesday, anyone travelling to the UK from countries not on the red list will be required to take a pre-departure test, regardless of their vaccination status."

The rule applies to all travellers aged 12 or over.

The health secretary added: "Vaccines remain our first line of defence – the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.

"Please get vaccinated or #GetBoosted as soon as you can."
What tests will I now need?
From 4am on Tuesday arrivals must take a pre-departure test, which can be lateral flow/rapid antigen, in addition to the post-arrival PCR. You could take a PCR test before departure, but it will be slower and more expensive than a quick, cheap lateral flow.

NHS tests cannot be used.

The government gives two different versions of how far in advance it should be taken. The press release about the new rules says the test should be taken "no earlier than 48 hours before departure".

The official statement of the rules is: "From 4am 7 December, you can take the test any time in the two days before the service on which you will arrive in England departs."

This suggests it must be taken on either of the two days before departure to the UK, or on the day of travel. For a Wednesday flight from the US to the UK, arriving the following morning, you could test on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Under this version, for an 11pm flight on Wednesday, you could in theory take the test at 1am on Monday – 70 hours before departure.

The government insists both versions mean the same thing. While the official statement has greater weight, you are advised to follow the more cautious 48 hours rule.

The government said: "New analysis conducted by the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates that the window between infection and infectiousness may be shorter for the omicron variant, which increases the efficacy of pre-departure testing as it is more likely to identify positive cases before travel.

"Given the reduced incubation period of the omicron variant, passengers are advised to take the pre-departure test as close as possible to their scheduled departure to the UK and no earlier than 48 hours before travelling."

The move will add cost and complexity to Christmas and New Year plans for millions of travellers – and increase uncertainty for anyone thinking of going away.
How much is this going to cost?
Pre-departure tests will depend on prevailing prices in the location – typically €25-€30 (£21-£25) in Europe.

A negative certificate will need to be presented to the airline, shipping firm or train operator before departure. In addition, each traveller aged five or over (from aged 11 in Scotland) must book a post-arrival PCR test, typically costing £40-£70.
Haven't we been here before?
Yes, from May to September 2021, fully vaccinated travellers to the UK had to take both pre-departure and post-arrival tests. The pre-departure test was scrapped three months ago, and travellers could opt for a cheaper and faster lateral flow test on arrival.

In addition, the red list was emptied two months ago. At the time the transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said: "We are accelerating towards a future where travel continues to reopen safely and remains open for good.

"Today's rule changes are good news for families, businesses and the travel sector."

The rules have reverted to where they were in summer – with the added twist of travellers being obliged to self-isolate until a negative PCR result is received.

Mr Shapps tweeted on Saturday evening: "As the scientists work to understand new omicron variant we need to apply additional caution until the picture is clearer.

"We appreciate this will be difficult for the travel sector as we prioritise public health and protect the progress of our world-leading vaccination and booster programme."
What happens if I test positive abroad?
You must immediately notify the local health authority and follow their instructions for isolation, which could be at your cost.

Travel firms will generally be flexible about moving bookings for people who test positive ahead of their flight/ferry/train and allow postponement.
What if someone tests positive for omicron on my flight?
You must self-isolate for 10 days.
What is this doing to traveller confidence?
The will to travel is being rapidly eroded. With two very significant changes in the space of a week, many travellers will conclude that the risk of being caught by hotel quarantine or unexpectedly high testing costs render journeys too uncertain.
How has the travel industry responded?
With renewed fury at the government's latest U-turn on testing.

The chairman and chief executive of British Airways, Sean Doyle, said: "The blanket re-introduction of testing to enter the UK, on top of the current regime of isolation and PCR testing on arrival is completely out of step with the rest of the world, with every other country taking a measured approach based on the science.

"Our customers will now be faced with uncertainty and chaos and yet again this is a devastating blow for everyone who works in the travel industry."

Martin Chalk, general secretary of the pilots' union, Balpa, said: "The new costs and stress of travel seem designed to destroy confidence in air travel and the idea of families being confident in booking to reunite over the holidays, many for the first time since Covid, is now a cruel joke."

Tim Alderslade, CEO of the industry body Airlines UK, said: "It is premature to hit millions of passengers and industry before we see the full data. We don't have the clinical evidence.

"We know from experience that blanket restrictions do not stop the importation of variants. It's already here.

"They've now changed their travel advice twice within a week and it's just impossible for anyone to plan.

"These measures must be removed as quickly as possible in line with the speed of the booster programme."

He added, though, that "The red list extension made complete sense – that's what it's there for."

The veteran tour guide and photographer, Paul Goldstein, said: "This woeful government seem determined to hammer a few nails in the industry's coffin and starve everyone in Africa.

"The variant is well and truly out of the bag anyway and I struggle to see how this draconian edict could ever be described as 'learning to live with Covid'."
Any way out of Nigeria before the deadline?
British Airways has seats on Sunday's overnight Lagos-London Heathrow service for £1,575. The flight is due in at 4.50am, and there is a chance BA may try to bring it in so that the wheels touch the ground before 4am on Monday.

From the capital, Abuja, there are no direct flights before the deadline. Four seats left on Monday's daytime flight to Heathrow are available at £730 one way, but the service will arrive too late.

The Independent has been unable to find any connecting flights from Lagos or Abuja on Sunday that arrive before the 4am Monday deadline.

Anyone who arrives from Nigeria before the 4am Monday deadline will be "strongly encouraged to isolate at home, and their household should also self-isolate for 10 days starting with their arrival".
Are there any ways to get around the red list?
Some travellers will, legally and responsibly, travel from Nigeria to a third country and remain there for 10 full days before continuing to the UK. Egypt is a possibility.

Anyone seeking to "launder" their red list status in this manner must check that the third country will allow them in, and is taking the risk that the chosen location will itself go onto the red list.
Are there enough hotel quarantine rooms?
The government says it has "contracted several new hotels to enter service this week, in response to the likely numbers of UK residents who will want to travel from Nigeria before Christmas".

But travellers will not be allowed to travel to the UK from a red list country without a "Managed Quarantine Service" booking. So they may need to remain in Nigeria until a hotel quarantine room becomes available.
When will the rules change again?
On 27 November, the prime minister said a review will be conducted and announced on Saturday 18 December. It will now happen on Monday 20 December.
naijapopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01057214693419014955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030374603503929982.post-69670760966647501872021-12-05T10:31:00.011+01:002021-12-05T10:31:59.112+01:00Kidnappers’ Den Discovered Behind A Police Checkpoint Along Auchi-Abuja Highway (Pix)

via A kidnappers’ den has been discovered behind a police checkpoint along Auchi-Abuja expressway.

The discovery was made on Thursday December 2. Huge iPhone Mistake—New Warning For 1 Billion Users
Apple has a very serious problem that has suddenly become a headline issue, undermining claims about iPhoneâs security and privacy credentials. It turns out that what happens on your iPhone, doesnât always stay on your iPhone after all.

I have warned before about the dangerous flaw in Appleâs iPhone security when it comes to the private messages sent between its billion-plus users. Privacy is built in from the beginning,â Apple says. âPowerful security features help prevent anyone except you from being able to access your information.â If only it was that clear-cut. Now a new warning from a very surprising source has hit the news.

iMessage is Appleâs stock end-to-end encrypted messenger. Designed to compete with WhatsApp, it seems to have the same securityâ"albeit only when communicating within Appleâs ecosystem. Message an Android user and you fallback to SMS, which is unacceptable in 2021â"more on that later. But even when you think youâre secure, youâre probably wrong. iMessage has an alarming catch.

The issue is iCloud and the general backups you make from your iPhone. If you use Appleâs default, recommended settings, then you run Messages in iCloudâ"meaning you sync your messages across all your devices, and you also run a generic iCloud backup, meaning you save a copy of your phoneâs data and settings to Appleâs cloud.

Securing iMessage
Apple
Hereâs where it gets complicated. iMessage is secured by end-to-end encryption, the idea being that the keys to decrypt messages between you and those you message are only shared between you. That stops anyone intercepting your content. But in a bizarre twist, Apple stores a copy of those encryption keys in that iCloud backup, which it can access. That means the end-to-end encryption is actually fairly pointless.

This issue came to the fore this week, with the publication of a sensitive FBI document that advises on which messaging platforms its agents can most easily access. The iMessage issue was front and center: âif target uses iCloud backup, the encryption keys should also be provided with [lawful access] content return; can also acquire iMessages from iCloud returns if target has enabled Messages in iCloud.â

When it comes to security, WhatsAppâs assurances are clear: âWe use end-to-end encryption so no one can read or listen to your personal conversations.â Appleâs wording is differentâ"and the nuance is critical. âEnd-to-end encryption protects your iMessage conversations across all your devices,â it says, âso that thereâs no way for Apple to read your messages when theyâre in transit between devices.â

That âin transitâ wording is critical. Itâs absolutely correct that when messages travel between phones theyâre highly secure, but on the device and backed up to the cloud, that changes. This issue is fast becoming the most critical one for secure messaging.

Disable WhatsApp iCloud Backup
WhatsApp / iOS
Despite its clearer assurances, WhatsApp didnât do that well, with the FBI saying it can request contact lists and metadata âsent every 15 minutesâ on who is messaging who. It can also access message content âif target is using an iPhone and iCloud backups enabled, iCloud returns may contain WhatsApp data to include message content.â

Enabling Encrypted Backup
WhatsApp / iOS
WhatsAppâs new encrypted backup feature is designed to resolve this exact issue, and WhatsApp even advises during the setup process that users need to remove it from iCloud backups. It turns out that little iCloud backup setting is bad news for private messaging all roundâ"a major vulnerability Apple needs to address urgently.

Unsurprisingly, Signal comes out best on the document: âNo message content, [just] data and time a user registered [and] last date a userâs connectivity to the service.â Signal avoids all on-device backup options and famously doesnât capture any metadata at all. Essentially, if the data doesnât exist, it canât be provided.

âItâs impossible to turn over data that we never had access to in the first place,â Signal says. âSignal doesnât have access to your messages; your chat list; your groups; your contacts; your stickers; your profile name or avatar; or even the GIFs you search for.â

If you want to keep your messaging private, my advice is to use WhatsApp as your daily, just given its scale, but make sure you use encrypted backups and donât have the iCloud backup option enabled. You should definitely use Signal where your contacts also have the app. If youâre an Android user, you can set Signal as your default messenger, such that it handles SMS as wellâ"thatâs a great option to have.

This has not been a good year for Apple and its iMessage platform. The storage of encryption keys in accessible backups is one mistake, but it has made two others as well, both of which significantly reduce the security and privacy of iMessage.

First, Appleâs decision to steer clear of Googleâs now coordinated RCS rollout across Android is a bad move for users. It means that Apple users messaging Android contacts, or vice versa, have to revert to a third-party platform like WhatsApp or will default to non-secure SMS, a crazy situation for 2021.

Google has been gently pressing Apple to get onboard this SMS v2 upgrade, and we saw more of that recently with a Google Messages update that translates the emoticon iMessage responses to something similar on an Android device. This is fairly pitiful as a token gesture for cross-platform interoperability, but it makes the point.

Second, Apple has also misstepped with its decision to add an on-device AI classifier to iMessage to warn minors sending or receiving explicit imagery. While this doesn't technically breach end-to-end encryption, it does open a backdoor to outside interference within the overall secure messaging enclave and has been heavily criticized by security and privacy advocates as a result.

And letâs not forget Pegasusgate, where an iMessage compromise was implicated in zero-click attacks on Apple users reportedly perpetrated using NSO technology. Apple says it has patched those vulnerabilities in iOS 15, but it was damaging, nonetheless.

This is an interesting time for secure messaging. There has never been more awareness of the value in preserving privacy using end-to-end security, but at the same time thereâs never been more pressure on tech providers to open those platforms to law enforcement. The publication of this FBI document shows that despite protests from more hawkish lawmakers, thereâs a fair amount of access to data even now.

Pegasus and this lawful access revelation is all about endpoint compromise. Whether on the device and tapped by malware, or backed up to the cloud, once end-to-end encrypted data reaches one of those ends, you need to take care itâs secure. And that means protecting your device and being mindful of what you back up to where.

Meanwhile, for Apple and its security and privacy USP, this is another awkward set of headlines it could really do without. I have approached Apple for any comments on the FBI document and its serious implications for the billion-plus iPhone users.

The stark truth is that Apple needs to change its iCloud approach as a matter of urgency, to cease storing encryption keys and to avoid backup up end-to-end encrypted data unless its protection carries over or users have been specifically warned that their privacy is being compromised. This update is now critical.
naijapopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01057214693419014955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030374603503929982.post-34762144322827253702021-12-05T08:00:00.002+01:002021-12-05T08:02:00.092+01:00Michelle Alozie: Nigeria building for Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers Michelle Alozie (right) played for Nigeria against the United States, where she was born, in a friendly in June
Nigeria international Michelle Alozie says her side are fully focused on winning their final qualifier and reaching the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons, nine-time continental champions, face Ivory Coast in a two-legged tie next February for a place at the tournament in Morocco.

Alozie, who plays for Houston Dash in the National Women's Soccer League in the United States, recently took part in a national team training camp in Abuja.

"It was really good to get a full nine days with everyone to prepare for the upcoming games," the 24-year-old said.

"We had a lot of positives, and it was good to see some new faces from the domestic players in Nigeria. If you do it that way, there will be unity, if there is fairness, equity, justice, you will have unity and progress.

Also speaking at the event, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim said it is neither a right nor was it legal for the southeast to demand presidency.

Anyim, who recently declared his ambition to contest for the 2023 presidential ticket of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP said the southeast h to persuade other regions to support their dream if they would produce the next Nigeria’s president.

“Is it right for the Southeast to produce the next president?, my answer is legally no, and the reason is that the constitution is clear, the constitution says every Nigerian of 40 years is entitled to aspire for that office.

“On the other side, morally is it right? is it an entitlement? I will say yes because the federal character principle enshrined in the constitution encourages rotation.

“The reason I have to make this clarification is that when the right you have is not legal, the only approach and the instrument you have is persuasion.

“So the approach, the language will be to persuade others to see reason with you that morally they should support you to take a turn since it rotates.”

Anyim therefore encouraged the Southeast that as they go ahead with the movement of advocating for a president, it should be with an altitude persuasion.

The Guest Speaker, Prof. Mutiullahi Olasupo, who is the Director of Institute for Peace Leadership and Development Studies, University of Abuja, said that it was right for the southeast to produce the next president in the interest of peace and natural law of justice.

He said it was imperative for all Nigerians to exclusively resolve that the presidency in 2023 should go to the southeast.

He said that the same mechanism that produced former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, should also repeat itself by 2023, to produce a president from the south east.

“Out of all the six geo-political zones in this country, it is only the southeast that has not produced the president in this country.

“Does that mean that the south east is not being recognized as a geopolitical zone in Nigeria?” he asked. (NAN)

Mrs Nkolika Mkparu ,Coordinator-General, UBNI, said that there was a feeling of political marginalisation after over a century (by 2023) the Southeast region is yet to produce a president.

Mkparu said that UBNI, a non-partisan political advocacy group, which had been involved in enlightenment for a united Nigeria deemed it fit to beam searchlight on the issue.

She said that in achieving this political balance, the support from the Southeast region alone would not suffice, therefore there is the need to appeal to other regions to support it.

“The truth of the matter is that our strongest strengths are from the north, our great leaders are from the north, so we are working with the whole nation with the understanding that inclusiveness is what will lead Nigeria to a better future.

“Inclusiveness that will bring us together in one union is what will bring our country together.

“Nigeria is huge enough for everybody, Nigeria has the capacity to hold everybody, Nigeria has the intellectuals, Nigeria has all it takes to lift the county, all we are asking for is to give the southeast also a chance to lead.

“All the other parts have tried, south south has tried, north has tried, west has tried since over 50 years now, so we are hoping that we should be allowed to try.”

https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/12/04/2023-southeast-ready-to-kneel-prostrate-to-get-presidency-ezeife/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter
naijapopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01057214693419014955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030374603503929982.post-88139854775173216712021-12-05T07:31:00.007+01:002021-12-05T07:31:43.529+01:00Dennis Wins Watford Player, Goal Of The Month Awards For November

via Dennis Wins Watford Player, Goal Of The Month Awards For November

Emmanuel Dennis has won Watford November Player and Goal of the Month awards, Completesports.com reports.

Watford made the announcement in a statement on their official website on Saturday.

“In-form forward Emmanuel Dennis has been crowned the winner of both the Stake Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards for November.

“The Nigeria international has enjoyed a highly successful start to life at Watford, with this his second Player of the Month gong of the season, having won it previously in August.

“Dennis scored two goals and provided two assists over a month which saw the Hornets face stiff competition, with matches against Arsenal, Manchester United and Leicester City.

“The 24-year-old also won a penalty in the final game of the month, which was ultimately converted by Joshua King. Dennis’ fine showings have also resulted in a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Month award.

“In a competitive poll, Dennis topped the supporter vote ahead of Joshua King, Leanne Bell and Anne Meiwald.

“The pick of the bunch from last month’s goals was Dennis’ clever finish against the Foxes on November 28. Despite the snowy conditions around him, Dennis showed composure and skill to take a stuttered touch in front of goal to trick the opposition, before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
“Dennis’ fifth goal of the season beat strikes from King, Bell, Emma Beckett, João Pedro and Ismaïla Sarr.”

Lalasticlala. The event was organised by the Nigerian-Arabian Gulf Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Nigeria’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission.

Mr Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesman said in a statement that President Buhari said that Nigeria was reaping from his administration’s efforts to consciously improve the country’s environment.

‘‘Nigeria’s pavilion at the Expo 2020 clearly shows why we remain the most viable and attractive investment destination in Africa. Our location, our natural resources, our population, and our regulations are there for all to see. Nigeria is on its way to becoming a leading industrial and trading nation in Africa.

‘‘To achieve this, our government focused on policies, projects and programmes that support private sector investors. We introduced numerous fiscal incentives and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the viability of investments.

‘‘In spite of the adverse global economic environment of recent years, Nigeria’s investment environment has greatly improved at the national and sub-regional levels,’’ Adesina quoted the president as having said.

President Buhari assured captains of industry and entrepreneurs, who had shown interest and commitment to enhance trade and investment relations with Nigeria, that government would continue to work with them to improve the business climate. He added that this had become essential as the African Continental Free Trade Area comes into full effect.

‘‘Just in November, I reminded business leaders that most of Africa’s challenges, whether security, economic or corruption, can be traced to our inability to domesticate the production of our most basic requirements.

“I said this at the Intra Africa Trade fair in Durban and said the inability was responsible for our failure to provide jobs for our teeming and dynamic youth population.

‘‘I am pleased that this Forum focuses on ‘Unveiling trade and investment opportunities in Nigeria,’ and I encourage you all to keep an open mind and look beyond the challenges.

‘‘In this room, we have governors, ministers and heads of government agencies that can address all your questions and concerns. We are here to support you and I hope you will all take this opportunity to move your investment decisions forward,’’ he said.

President Buhari also expressed gratitude to his hosts, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and the?Emir of Abu Dhabi.

He commended their unwavering commitment to strengthen trade and investment relations between both countries through various initiatives, partnerships and support.
https://newswirengr.com/2021/12/04/nigeria-remains-most-attractive-investment-destination-in-africa-buhari/
naijapopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01057214693419014955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030374603503929982.post-90277781557694679472021-12-05T07:31:00.003+01:002021-12-05T07:31:38.598+01:00170 Domestic Animals Rescued As Bandits Clash In Kaduna

via
A face off between two factions of notorious bandits hibernating in Sabon Birnin forest in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State has aided the rescue of no fewer than 170 domestic animals comprising cows, sheep, goats and donkeys.

The Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police SP, Isah Gambo disclosed this in a statement seen by DAILY POST.

SP Isah in the statement said the clash led to the death of one of the bandits kingpin, Tashi Alhaji Musa, and nine others.

The two bandits leaders involved in the face off, Kabiru Master and Tashi Alhaji Musa and said to be from Dage village in Dutsinma LGA of Katsina State.

The domestic animals recovered by the police were traced to their village, Dage, after some of the bandits who survived the clash decided to return home with them.

The recovered domestic animals comprises of 67 cows, 60 sheep, 40 goats and three donkeys.

The statement reads:

“On 2/12/2021 at about 0830hrs, credible information was received that about two weeks ago two groups of bandits led by one Kabiru Master and another led by one Tashi Alhaji Musa had misunderstanding which led to serious fight at Sabon Birni forest, Igabi LGA of Kaduna state that led to the killing of Tashi Alhaji Musa and nine (9) other bandits. The Orsu/Orlu axis is now IPOB's enclave. My sources told me that the video of the beheading of the policemen was recorded somewhere around the axis. THREAD

For instance, bereaved families who are barely coping with the exploitative Igbo burial rites now have another burden added to their worries - pay the local IPOB cell or your burial will not hold. Period.

IPOB militiamen are now setting up checkpoints around the area. People are stopped and searched. If you work for certain government agency you could be tagged a "Sabo" (saboteur), tortured or even worse. People now pay to free their relatives apprehended by IPOB militiamen.

Due to the absence of the police in area, following IPOB's relentless attacks on police stations, IPOB militiamen are now being called upon to settle scores and grievances.

Your guess of their methods of doing this is as good as mine.

The residents of Orsu/Orlu are caught between a rock and a hard place. A murderous militia which will stop at nothing to force obedience and an indiscipline military who only response to dissent is a brutal and indiscriminate crackdown.

Several families and individuals have lost their houses and other properties to these siamese twins of evil - the military and IPOB.

Igbo political and intellectual elites have elected to bury their heads in the sand.

While Ala Igbo is gradually but surely being destroyed.

When you speak to some of them in private they complain bitterly about Nnamdi Kanu and his gang of thugs. Publicly, they make excuses and cook up silly denial for the terrorist group.

What about your Igbo social media influences? Those ones are the worst.

They are members IPOB or not according to convenience.

Many of your social media influences who criticised IPOB's sit-at-home and call to boycott the Anambra election were strong supporters of IPOB...

... before the election period. They were chief among those who lied that the attacks on police stations were not the work of IPOB and its militia ESN. They also pushed the false narrative that the attacks were orchestrated by DSS.

They opposed IPOB during the Anambra election because they thought a boycott of the election will aid an APC victory.

Watch them closely, after the election they have started leaning towards IPOB. Hard as they try to hide it any discerning person will see through their façade.

On a final note, those of you who are telling my uncles and cousins back home to warn me to stop tweeting about IPOB are wasting your time. I will not stop. The truth must be said, even if I am the only voice screaming it. Your insults will not stop me too.

And if anything happens to me or my loved ones, you know who to blame. End.

https://mobile.twitter.com/nicholasibekwe/status/1467064478898569219
naijapopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01057214693419014955noreply@blogger.com0
