NAMI members and friends,

The NAMIWalk on Saturday was great! There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm to make the mental health community better known in Warren County.

We brought in about $3500 that day which brings our total to a little over $8000 from Walkers and another $2025 from sponsors so we are just a little over $10,000 for this walk.

I do expect more donations to continue to come in for the next few weeks. I received some donations in the mail on Saturday that have not been added to this total....so we may reach our goal of $15,000 with a little help from our friends and maybe some nudging!!!

NEW BOARD MEMBER NAMED TO NAMI WARREN COUNTY

Lebanon, OH—NAMI Warren County welcomes Sgt. Jeff Mitchell of the Lebanon Police Department to its board. Sgt. Mitchell is a detective and has been in law enforcement for many years. He is a resident of Lebanon.

NAMI Warren County is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a grassroots organization headquartered in Arlington, VA. NAMI is dedicated to education, support, and advocacy for people and families affected by a serious, chronic mental illness like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental illnesses. NAMI Warren County sponsors a monthly educational meeting open to the public, a monthly support group, and a 12 week educational course to help family members better understand mental illness. NAMI Warren County is an affiliate in good standing of NAMI OHIO and is partially funded by Mental Health Recovery Services of Warren and Clinton Counties.

We will be having a volunteer information night on July 16 at about 5:30 PM to give you info about how to volunteer and participate more fully in this first ever NAMI Warren County fun and fundraising walk.

Family-to-Family Education Course Begins Sept. 3

This is a free,12-week course for family members with a loved one who has a chemical imbalance/ brain disorder/ mental illness. Materials are presented by two trained volunteers and cover: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, and Schizophrenia.

Medications and therapy are also discussed. Workshops are included on problem solving, communication techniques, and empathy along with classes on self care, advocacy, and recovery.

Classes every Thursday, Sept.3-Nov. 19 for 12 Weeks 6:30-9:00 PM at the Lindner Center of HOPE, 4075 Old Western Row Rd., Mason.

Planning for the Financial Future for Individuals with Special Needs

Four Programs April 20 and 21.

Many families when faced with a loved one’s diagnosis of mental retardation, developmental disabilities, mental illness, or traumatic brain injury don’t know where to turn for services for their loved one or how to plan for the future. A consortium of service providers, governmental agencies and advocacy groups has come together to help families “put the pieces of the puzzle together.”

On April 20 and April 21, Mr. Chuck Locy, Financial Planner with the Division of Estate Planning for Special Kids will give four seminars on “Financial Planning for Individuals with Special Needs.” Mr. Locy has been a financial planner for over 10 years and has an established network of legal and care providers. He is well known throughout the region. His presentation will be easily understood by families and staff.

The sessions will be held as follows:

NAMI CONNECTIONS Support Group at Lindner Center of Hope

A NAMI Connections support group will begin on Monday, February 2, 2009, 7-8:30 PM, at the Lindner Center of Hope, 4075 Old Western Row Rd., Mason. (Between I-71 and Mason-Montgomery Rd.) The group will meet the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at the same location and same time.

NAMI Connections is a recovery support group program for people living with mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety disorders and other serious mental illnesses. This group will give you a chance to talk with others to share coping strategies and insights, as well as problems and concerns. This group will be facilitated by trained peer facilitators.

We have extended the time to make a reservation for the NAMI Annual Award and Recognition Dinner to Thursday, Nov. 6. Awards will be given to Danny and Barb Hedger, Beckie Kindred, Mary Frasik, and Dick Lee. I know many of you know some or all of the honorees.

Bill Harper, former Executive Director of the Mental Health Board in Warren and Clinton Counties and current Assistant Director of the Ohio Dept. of Mental Health will be the speaker. His talk will focus on transforming the mental health system.

Also Jim Mauro and Gini Haffner of NAMI Ohio are planning to attend.

So here’s a chance to honor some of our most dedicated members and mental health professionals, catch up with some of these friends whom many of you know, or perhaps to meet them for the first time.

Putting the Pieces Together –Another Life Planning Seminar

Lebanon, OH—Many families when faced with a loved one’s diagnosis of mental retardation, developmental disabilities, mental illness, or traumatic brain injury don’t know where to turn for services for their loved one or for financial help. A consortium of service providers, governmental agencies and advocacy groups has come together to help families “put the pieces of the puzzle together.”

On November 18 and November 19, Ms. Kathy Morris and Mr. Richard Neidhard will give four seminars on “What Can I do Today to Plan for the Future of my Loved One who has a Disability.” Ms. Morris is extremely knowledgeable in the area of trusts and life planning. She is the Associate Director of the Community Fund Management Foundation and has been in this field for 34 years. Mr. Neidhard is a founding member of P.L.A.N. of Southwest Ohio, (Planned Lifetime Assistance Network) and is currently a board member of P.L.A.N. He is the parent of a special needs adult child. Both are well known throughout the region. Their presentations are easily understood by families and staff.

NAMI Surveys People with Mental Illness

NAMI is conducting a survey of adults living with serious mental illnesses and their family members.

(NOTE: Survey is now closed).

In addition to providing information for incorporation into a NAMI report, Grading the States 2009, the survey will help NAMI learn about how well states are providing publicly funded mental health services.

Agreement has been reached on meaningful mental health and addiction parity legislation in Congress. However, there are only three weeks left in the legislative session; in order to ensure that the parity legislation soon becomes law, it is essential that your Members of the U.S. House and Senate hear about the importance of passing the parity legislation before Congress adjourns.

Calls to your U.S. Senators and Representatives are urgently needed. Please call your Members of Congress on National Parity Call-In Day, September 10th (call-in information follows below), and ask Congress to pass mental health and addiction parity legislation before the end of the session.

What You Need to Know

Background:

-Key negotiators in Congress have come to agreement on meaningful mental health and addiction parity legislation that will improve access to lifesaving treatment services, and will help to end discrimination against thousands of Americans. Both the House and the Senate must approve the legislation before it can become law.

-There is very little time left in the 110th Congress, with only three weeks remaining in the legislative session. For bills that aren't approved by the end of the session, the legislative process would start again in the next Congress, with the legislation being reintroduced, co-sponsors collected, and the entire Committee review process repeated.

In order for meaningful mental health and addiction parity legislation to become law during this Congress, it is extremely important that your U.S. Senators and Members of the House hear from you about the importance of passing parity legislation before this Congress adjourns at the end of September.

Lindner Center of HOPE announces Grand Opening Celebration

Lindner Center of HOPE, the comprehensive mental health center of excellence in Mason, Ohio, will open its doors for a public grand opening celebration Saturday, August 9, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with ribbon cutting promptly at 11 a.m.

Members of the community are invited to attend the event to learn more about the Lindner Center of HOPE. Festivities will include tours of the facility, mental health and wellness information, and light refreshments.

The Center will begin seeing patients Monday, August 18, 2008. The Center of HOPE will provide diagnostic and treatment services integrated with clinical research.
