Relations.

I would like to make a statement before i proceed further. The thoughts expressed in this post are purely the author's. As a reader, you may or may not like it...and I don't care..As long as I am alive, .As long as i can type and as long as my blog is online,they remain mine. Proceed.

Life has taught me some bitter , some sour , some sweet, some chewy and what-so-ever tasteful lessons. And it has been a great experience to be on the receiving side. You learn alot, how to tackle situations in the future, what kind of issues you might face...and plenty others. The point is, of all these relations, how much you value which one, the most.

Yes, I value my relation with my parents the most. And it would remain the same till my last breathe. Second, as of now i value the relation with my friends. Then, the one with my colleagues, then the one with the society and so on. The second one will change for sure in the near future when i have someone else in my life. Someone , who had been enjoying her life in her own way, and suddenly who comes to know about another fellow human being.

Relations with my relatives, haven't been so nice for a long time. In this world, you are valued based on the amount of money you have. You are rich? Then its cool for them. You are not, then it isn't that cool. Discrimination has been a part and parcel in life and i pity them for not being a human. They don't deserve that either.

Friends...., relations with them i have valued alot. n number of friends from school..n number of friends from college and n number of them @ work. That is me. For one or more reason, people like me. For one or more reason, i like many of them too..especially my dear one...bettykunju... Fact is i have never met her, but she is my besttttest one. I rank friends in a way everyone does. Some are intimate some are not, some are close , some are best..some are good. No matter How much ever classifications I have, i respect all of them.

Now there are relations, which you treasure more. Am not talking about the Friendly thing here..but yea more of the love thing...The love you have for someone. When you like some one , you feel excited. When someone likes you, you feel more excited. As of now, I am excited. Excited for the fact that I realize i like some one. Sadly,I haven't reached the next level. Also i do realize that things doesn't always happen the way you want it to. But still you pray for it. Can't help it . It's HUMAN. So my relationship status still remain single.

Let me scribble something about friaandship now. We all remember our school days far more clearer than our college days. Those police and robber games, hide and seek etc. The mind was so pure that your friends were like your siblings. As we grew up, our siblings seperated from us. Got a seperate set of people around you. SOme failed to keep in touch with their ex-siblings but some did. When i look back, i dont find a zillion # of friends to boast about, but from the millions i had, most of them underwent the change i mentioned couple of lines above. Now after, say 5 yrs, i find myself happy to be pinged by friends, whom you thought you lost forever and they come back to you. When asked, how others are, they prove you wrong. It did not happen with you alone, it happened with all of them. All of them had their own priorities, their own people and this tendency will always be there.

So were your experience with relations, more or less the same? Feel free to share.

N.B : Yes, for the fact that I have admitted that I like someone, doesn't really give anyone a chance to ask me who that is. Wish people realized certain things and made it lot more smoother. As a human, even i pray for things to get smoother.

A memorable vacation :)

Its been 2 years since i joined the industry. I have had many vacations during this 2 years, some spanning a week, some spanning 3 days... But this one which was 10 days long, i would say, is the most memorable one .. the one which i enjoyed the most. for its own special reasons... I came here a week back ( Dec 18th to be precise). I had plans of meeting my friends from college. But my gut feeling told me, its not them you will enjoy the most with, but with your school buddies. And that's exactly what happened.

I rang up my college mate, yes i did that atleast. Though the plan was to meet this person at least, but i don't think it would have happened. No offense, but i am happy for the time i had without the meeting . My stay started with the sad news reaching me, that my doggie, Chikku as he was called, expired. It was one full day of sadness. I miss him alot.

Then slowly i came out of all that, and started off in style. Took my bro for the much hyped, 3D movie , Avatar. WOW. Just that word comes to my mind. Also took him for the visual dhamaka from Roland Emerich, called 2012. After couple of days, i decided to meet my school buddy, a special person in my school life- Adarsh. He is such a down to earth personality. We know each other pretty well, may be because of the commonality in the problems we face :) After an unexpected delay in the meeting, I met him one fine evening. During the time we spent, many old memories came to my mind. Back in school we used to play together, and all the faces that were with us, came right in front of us. In fact many memories. We are one among the privileged students of Bhavans, who studied there from the beginning till the end of schooling. So we share a lot of memories.

We also met another good buddy of ours from Bhavans- Manu. After spending sometime with him, we headed to the beach. Its been over 3 years since i have been there and trust me it was a nice evening we had. On our way back, i got down at the city centre and boy the 10km walk back home was Superb :P ( Ok am not nuts)

When all this took place, one small incident took place along with it. It was just another Fb entry for me... Wrote about seeing a school mate on her wall in CCD along with her friend...And then came a comment to the Wall entry... Didn't take much time to realize who that was. Known for my good sense of humor, made some remarks and slowly we started making a private space lil messy? Before the owner behaved indecently, we moved out to IM... I would honestly say , I had a good time and i think I have made a good Iyer ponnu as a good friend of mine ;) Hahaha.. [Note: When i crib this , its me who have seen this person the most and she hasnt seen me yet. I loved the way i explained my seeing of her @ the Rlwy station and her reactions to that. ]

Younger to me, she is so intelligent and cute. This person has great intellect and i was impressed with many things she told me. Also came to know that she is related to my college friend, I would say this is one master piece production ;) hehehe... OK I am not used to describing people and I am not good at that but i can do that in person. The very interaction with her gave me a special feeling which i find it really difficult to explain. But i hope she is truthful to what she has told me and i think she is. After all a person of her intellect cannot be like what i suspect. I am very cautious in each step i take and i believe this time also I have a made a good friend. She will be known as Iyer ponnu to me and i look forward to have a healthy relation with this gem of a person. [I cant do more dear :p]

OK now coming back... And yes... I am feeling so lazy to drag my a@# back to Bangalore and trust me... The experience which i had this time gives a greater sense of relief from the very ugly world i have been facing there... People who used to be with you for 2 years, when they start behaving so weired, I would rather say, when the bitches shows the real color, you feel like, slitting their throat. Some people think they have become super mature and can do all shit they want to ... But they fail to realize the lessons which they have to learn at a cost later. Hope they learn it pretty soon. Such thorns will always be there ... Now that I have realized it, seen them, am removing them or making a way so clear for me to walk ahead, move ahead, moulding my mind to be not affected by any of their actions ... I have set some goals for me and i know my commitments... Work hard to achieve them and this will be my resolution for the coming year... Let God help me in achieving the succes i dream of ... GRUBing ;)

I was thinking about configuring my Ubuntu machine to a “build” machine for a long time ;).Since my new found ( old actually ) companion is C language, i thought i should go the gcc way of doing things ;)

When i came to my native for a 3 day break , i ran into trouble first of all. I had to re-install, better to say INSTALL my XP machine once again ( reminds me of the phrase “Ohh No..Not again!!!” ) as it was infected with viruses of God-knows-what types..After doing that i came across another issue, which ofcourse is as simple as am typing now.Hehe

Problem/Context:

I had a dual boot PC with Ubuntu 8.04 and Mecashaaft XP.

The MBR was written with GRUB.

Now when i reinstalled XP , the boot loader was re-written with the XP one.

I wanted my old GRUB to be the bootloader .. ( As i am used to it u see :P )

Solution:

Thinking about the solution to this problem.. I knew i had already made a post regarding this in my blog ( Yes i have done this before ). So what i needed was a Live-CD to login to Net. Yes, you saw it/ read it right . LIVE CD TO LOGIN TO NET.

I had my copy of Granular Linux with me ( zillion thanksssss to Justin , He gave me that. I owe you man) and with no hesitation i popped in my Granular. Seriously that is one gem of a distro.

And once the Granular was up, i merrily opened the Firefox and logged into the ISP account. Then searching through the older posts, i found the much needed post.Also a google gave me a genuine result. I would better explain the steps once again.

Step 1 : Open a Terminal/ Console window.

Step 2 : Type in “sudo grub” [Note: Super user mode is necessary].

Step 3 : Once you are in the grub ,Enter find /boot/grub/stage1 . This would yield an output,

similar to “root (hd?,?) “ . This is where your GRUB would get installed.

Step 4 : Now enter “setup (hd0)”

Step 5 : Quit.

Thats it... Now you have your GRUB instead of the Win XP bootloader as well your existing Linux distro would become accesible.

HUMANS

It’s been 2 months since I have blogged. Now am back home for yet another holiday, I think I should take this opportunity to scribble down something.

This Xmas holiday, I believe would be the turning point in my life. This one year which would pass of in another week’s time has been a memorable year in my life with so many downs I should say.

I always used to say “HUMANS” with a variety of meanings according to the situation. I have seen may people in this life span of 22 years. (well exclude the first 6-7 years) . Many have influenced my life a lot. Like my mom , my grandma , dad and some close friends. But this last year has been remarkable in my life with people coming in and going out of my life so easily. Sadly all of them were my good friends. If one had her own problems, ways of solving things another had attitude issue. Another…it continues.

All these incidents have one way or other disturbed me a lot. Infact affected my peace of mind like anything. They were not ready to listen to me as they had their points to be made. Well I was helpless. During all these mayhem what was so helpful was the support from my mom. No one would be as perfect a patient listener than she (All moms are like that ). And also concentrating on work gave me enough pressure that I dint get time to think about any other issues.

I hope by god’s grace everything would get well in the coming year and hope it would bring me peace of mind and most importantly success in my activities.

Bumpy Ride......

It was a bumpy ride from HYD to Bangalore as the infamous highways was full of gutters, humps etc etc making the word infamous apt: P. …..The time was 6:50 in the morning when I woke up from the sleep, well , I should say being throw up the berth of the sleeper coach bus in which we were traveling.hehe.

I’ve always people complaining about bus routes ruining there journey especially as they wake up after a night long ride to find that they can’t go @least to the stinky Railway urinal. But on that day I joined the club as I was desperately trying to hold all such emotions: D..Around 10 AM we reached the Hebbal flyover. I was supposed to join my friend who would be staying @ a place called Marthahalli. So we boarded the bus which would take us to Marthahalli and seriously the walk to the bus stop with that entire luggage….it was horrible.

Upon reaching there, we were given a sumptuous lunch and that lamb fry was superb. We kept some of our luggage there and left the place to his friend’s place. That night we went to a multiplex nearby for a film, Taare Zameen Par , the directorial debut of Aamir Khan.Am not stretching this much like a diary instead I’d quote some events that occurred during this first 10 months of my stay in Bangalore. Well one thing I should say keeping in mind the heterosexuals you find in HYD, the ones here in Bangalore are not that harmful. May be I haven’t had the experience but then as far as I have seen them , they seemed to be OK. I often find them near the Madiwala Ayyapa temple and I know one of there route too hehe... Starting from Madiwala temple till Forum. There are many things in Bangalore that have amazed me, but till now I’ve been careful not to visit any pub ;). Drinking is injurious to health you see. Also in Forum an attraction for me is the Landmark and their collection of books.

I’m staying @ the right place keeping my conveyance to my office in mind. 14 KM by bus and I reach office quite early. I should say unlike people who does the calculation and make it 9.5, I have an average of 10 – 11 per week. Of course not the entire time am productive but 90% of it.
One more important thing is the changes that have happened to my life. I made numerous new friends during this short time and also some of my college friends are here also. I admit that I wasn’t able to keep in touch with ALL of them and on the RIGHT time as some others could do, but I don’t repent.

Many good as well as bad things have happened in my life and thank God for everything .Seriously speaking I enjoy my work. Also the technology which I’m working always thrills me. So I try myself to be as focused as I can and this is my sincere request to all my colleagues. I shouldn’t conclude this epilogue with out a mention of my MS. So far so good and I look forward to finish it off neat and clean J . Let the life be prosperous for you my reader as well for me the writer. J . Enjoy MaadiJ.

Last days in Hyderabad

Its been a "long" time since i have come to Hyderabad. The city has been nice to me, with the people speaking some strange language s far as am concerned, but it gave me its surprises in the form of "hijadas". I had this one of a kind experience with this people .I was on my way to office one day , and 2 hijus came upto me. I gave them some 20 Rs and hurried from the spot before something "unexpected" happened.

The city is so nice, nicer than Bangalore i would say. It has all the facilities, be it transportation or electricity. The city serves its people well. But the only disheartening thing are the kids. Even a 7 old child starts his early days of cycling on a bike and they end up crashing in the roads.I pity them and their parents.

I got the wonderful opptnty to visit some highlights of HYD like iMax, Ramoji Film City, NTR Gardens,Birla Mandir and also have wonderful Hyderabadi Biriyanis from good hotels like the Paradise in Secunderabad.Next week by this time,il be packing my bags for my journey to Bangalore or in the office attending one of those last sessions in Wipro Tech , Manikonda.

Definitely the last 3 months had been so memorable in my life that it would remain in my heart forever.

NIITians always..........

Last week i got a mail from my dear friend Justin, informing me about the much awaited departure to Bangalore to join the NIIT centre there and continue the 3rd semester of GNIIT.It is indeed a happy news for me also because I would have been a part of that if i hadn't joined Wipro Technologies now. Iam also happy to understand that all my batch mates are moving to Bangalore with Justin and if am lucky enough, my posting location would be Bangalore and I would be able to meet them there.

Finally......

One and a half month is indeed a lonnnng gap. As i see, my last post was on 13th of September,just 3 days before i left my home for a journey which i would like to call it an EPIC one , as it is THE important jounrney in my life. Yes, i left home to join WIPRO, where i would be working as a Student-Computer Applications along with pursuing an MS from BITS ,Pilani. What am into is a Work-integrated MS programme at the end of which i would get a full time MS degree from BITS.

[Well there are some conditions which i dont want to even think about . Hehe.]

I reached Hyderabad on 18th of September.That was an overnight journey from Banglore where i had to stay for a day and a half to do some bank procedures. On reaching hyderabad, renjith picked me up and dad and I do feel extremely lucky to stay with Renjith , as he is someone who i know.In other cases , its really difficult to find a good accomodation.

So i joined the office on Sept 21st. The next monday, Sept 24th, officially it all started with the FRp training. FRP is a 10 day training program where we were taugtht C and Data Structures (advanced level one can say). After that there was a test. The cut off was 70% , but for us it was made 60.( i do believe its because of the small strenght our batch is having).

It was an unfortunate day that i could clear the test in the first attempt. So we had to attend one week of mentoring classes for the same . Seriously our faculty Mr.Mohan is an EXCELLENT teacher. Hes send here from NIIT. ( The standard always shows naa???? ).During his one week of mentoring, i revised what all i had to. But the feel of not clearing th test was still haunting me.But as always i changed. And one week later, i wrote the retest and cleared the test with 76%(which i personally feel isnt that good :( ). Meanwhile , we had our BU Induction as well as CRP (Corporate Readiness Program). We had some excellent sessions handled by Mr. Reddy , Mr.Sai Diwakar, Ms Pragya etc etc. So once i cleared the test, i was on cloud 9. I couldnt express my happines. But amidst that happiness, was there the sorrow of one of my close friend not making it in the 2nd attempt also. But i do see her scoring good marks in the coming TRP.

Now after a break of 2 days, our TRP started today with C++. Talking about my domain, its called Telecoms Product Engineering and my stream is Systems Programming in Windows. Lets see how it goes as i would be learning quite a lot of new things like MFC,Win32SDK Programming etc etc. In this one month i went out for shopping twice to a place they call BF (BrandFactory) where one would get branded products with offers worth it.And yes , for a movie last week (Bhool Bhulaiyya).

Well to conclude, i didnt get this much time to sit infront of a system and update my blog. Sorry for that. My present location has been shifted from my palacial shack in Trivandrum to a place called Toli Chowki in Hyderabad. But IM HAPPY. Everyday i pray to God that let my next four years be as good as it can be and hope nothing worse/disasterous happens to my life.

The All New Flock .

Even though i had the most secure web browser ever (Firefox), I was always interested in trying a new web browser and from the buzz happening around me , Flock was the option that came up to me.

I've heard about Flock from Justin and I've been thinking of downloading it. Now ever since my IE has started behaving weird , I decided that its high time i download this one of a kind browser. To my surprise its a Sourceforge project and man i would 'nt mind joining it. But you see Meritocracy is what it takes to become a member of awsome projects like the ones you see in Mozilla and Sourceforge

Linux Tips and Tricks.

How to boot Linux from the Windows Bootloader
===================================

Let's create a dual boot system with a non-Linux bootloader.To do this , first install Windows XP and then Linux. During the installation of LInux ,make sure that you choose to install the Linux bootloader to the root partition instead of over writing the MBR, which already holds the Windows bootloader.

Now,download a tiny program called Bootpaer and run it from the DOS prompt in its directory by typing bootpart in its directory.It will display all partitions.

Then type the following:

bootpart <> bootlinx.bin

Guard against SYN attacks and 'ping'
====================================

As the root user ,execute the following code:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies

Want to disable ping?

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

Disable broadcast/multicast ping??

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts

And to enable again:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

"Autopatching" my XP

Digit is a popular tech magazine in India and I try to go through the copy of it atleast from the library. I buy it very rarely but i like the contents very much. My important source of Digit is Justin. He buys such magazines and i get to read them as soon as he complete going through it.

One fine day , i came across Autopatcher for Mecashaft(a.k.a Microsoft)'s much talked about OS..yeah its XP only..hehe ... Developed by Antonis Kaladis and Jason Kelley,it provides all the required updates as far as XP is concerned.. There are many sites from where one could download it , Softpedia being one among them. I thought of downloading but i didnt do it as i wasnt that much interested. So it was a few days back , I borrowed a CD-DVD combi from Digit which they bring out with every issue .

Navigating through the sleek Aero interface they implemented in it, I came across Autopatcher bundled in it. Thank god i didnt have to waste my time downloading. It was the May month core update from the developers and boy it took me 1 hr 15 minutes (freaking) minutes to do the update. Well you might wonder why i did this. After all XP is an OS and i want to to keep it neat and tidy. Seriously there was a performance boost after the update. So you dont know what is Autopatcher? Here read from Wiki.

AutoPatcher was an alternative to Microsoft's Windows Update developed by Antonis Kaladis and Jason Kelley, and a comprehensive collection of up-to-date security patches, addons and registry tweaks collated into a single package designed to update a Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows Server 2003 SP1 or Windows Vista system from a local file, without the need to use Windows Update or connect to a network each time.

The AutoPatcher team shut down the project after receiving email from Microsoft requesting them to stop distribution on 29 August 2007. This came after four years of existence, and surprised many. Microsoft mentioned the security risks of third party distribution of their patches, but it is unclear if this is the full reason behind the decision. They denied that the possibility of circumventing their Windows Genuine Advantage protection with the software was behind it, and mentioned that Firefox could now access the Windows Update website for pre-Windows Vista systems to at least partially support their decision. However, the software was commonly used for offline and network installs, and not merely as an alternative update client to avoid Internet Explorer, and this issue was not addressed by Microsoft.

Flash support for Firefox 2.0.0.6 in Feisty (AMD64)

Well after installing Feisty Fawn , i was always given the annoying message of missing shockwave flash plugin. As a result of which i wasnt able to see the YouTube windows and even some real nice Flash objects. I must say i was late to search for the solution. But once i searched ,i got this page from the Ubuntu forum .

Nspluginwrapper Install Script (Updates 8/21/07)
This script will install the nspluginwrapper, and Flash for your 64bit browser. It will not install other plugins. There are other plugins, java being one, that nspluginwrapper can not work with. The script has been updated on 8/21/07. It no longer uses alien, and it will clean out previous installs.
Click here if you want to download the script for Feisty.
Click here if you want to download the script for Edgy or Dapper.

The script also works with the 64bit builds of Swiftweasel, an optimized build of Firefox.

Instructions
1. Download the script.
2. Right click on the tar.gz and select "Extract Here"
3. Close all browsers.
4. Inside the folder that extracts is a "GetFlash" file, double click on it.
5. Select "Run in Terminal"
6. When the terminal closes, restart your browser.
7. Your done.

How to get help (Please Read Before Making a Post)
If you have any problems and need help please download this version of the script. It is the same script, but it will not clean up after itself. This will make troubleshooting easier. Graphical Configuration tool for X

You can now configure what driver you want to use for your graphic card, set up dual monitors, change the default resolution for all users or change your monitor's refresh rate without having to turn to the terminal. A new GUI has been added making it trivial to adjust your video and monitor settings.

EtherApe

EtherApe is a graphical network monitor for Unix modeled after etherman. Featuring link layer, ip and TCP modes, it displays network activity graphically. Hosts and links change in size with traffic. Color coded protocols display.
It supports Ethernet, FDDI, Token Ring, ISDN, PPP and SLIP devices. It can filter traffic to be shown, and can read traffic from a file as well as live from the network.

EtherApe has enough functionality to be useful, but it's far from complete. It's still beta software, and new features and bug fixes are being added all the time. Here is the list of features, current as of version 0.9.5, in no particular order:

Features:

Network traffic is displayed graphically. The more "talkative" a node is, the bigger its representation.
Node and link color shows the most used protocol.
User may select what level of the protocol stack to concentrate on.
You may either look at traffic within your network, end to end IP, or even port to port TCP.
Data can be captured "off the wire" from a live network connection, or read from a tcpdump capture file.
Live data can be read from ethernet, FDDI, PPP and SLIP interfaces.
The following frame and packet types are currently supported: ETH_II, 802.2, 803.3, IP, IPv6, ARP, X25L3, REVARP, ATALK, AARP, IPX, VINES, TRAIN, LOOP, VLAN, ICMP, IGMP, GGP, IPIP, TCP, EGP, PUP, UDP, IDP, TP, IPV6, ROUTING, RSVP, GRE, ESP, AH, ICMPV6, EON, VINES, EIGRP, OSPF, ENCAP, PIM, IPCOMP, VRRP; and most TCP and UDP services, like TELNET, FTP, HTTP, POP3, NNTP, NETBIOS, IRC, DOMAIN, SNMP, etc.
Data display can be refined using a network filter.
Display averaging and node persistence times are fully configurable.
Name resolution is done using standard libc functions, thus supporting DNS, hosts file, etc.
Clicking on a node/link opens a detail dialog showing protocol breakdown and other traffic statistics.
Protocol summary dialog shows global traffic statistics by protocol.
Scrollkeeper-compatible manual.

Proud Ubuntu Consultant..( Was free ok?)

Well it was around 9:15 PM IST when i received a call in my landline. Upon my "Hello?", a familiar voice responded with his eloquent voice. It was none other than Mr Swaroop, my mate when i was in NIIT (Well he still is :D) . Just like the very old days , when i was crazy about getting my hands dirty with Linux, this guy was all charged up for the last 2 months or so. He says he liked what I ve been doing with my Ubuntu and all..(But really WHAT DID I REALLY DO? Ans: NOTHING )

You may call it humbleness (well to tell you frankly I expect a comment on this post from none other than my friend Mr Smith , but i guess he wont do even as an anonymous user after reading this line :P lolz )

Seriously, i wanted to become some one who has some expertise in something. You see Im proud to say that whatever i did, i did it from my heart. And i like the way things are turning out to be. Now am busy myself teaching myself the widely accepted scripting tool , Perl ( B-) )

Ok coming back to the topic. Swaroop has a 2 Mbps Internet connection and mind you the foreign readers, 2 Mbps is really some serious speed in India (Damn you Indian govt ..Why cant they go for higher bandwith? ...) He downloaded his Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn ( See everybody in this world like Ubuntu Hehe ..All Hail Mark All Hail Mark). But this chap has already ordered his copy of Ubuntu through Shipit . [ I told him before downloading" Patience my Boy "..Well he didnt have any :( ].

Ok today he got his copy of Feisty all the way from Canonical. So he put the CD , booted into the Ubuntu Live Environment and unfortunately he thought the everything was over. But see Im the consultant naa, I said "Whuuzup Chuck?!! It aint over yet . Double click the Install button and then only the fun begins..."..He did just as what i said. While i was explaining to him what to do over the phone ( well i dint see anythng oke?) , I was thinking How cool is it to help some one like this and earn some reputation?...The fact is what i did has got nothing to do with Reps and I am a proud Linux evangelist who did his part in spreading the "Linux for Humans " motto as put forward by Mr Mark Shuttle Worth.

I took Mr Swaroop through the different partitions available in Ubuntu and what he should do a, how to enables the Desktop Effects [ Truth is he was virtually frightened to see the window wobble and the cubes rotate.. Boyy he didnt expect that when i told him to press the Ctrl + Alt keys , along with a the left mouse button down....and yeah yea...You know what happens...:D]
Now lets see how far he goes and I bet he would be thrilled to learn new things in the following days to come.And dear Readers , Iam available in Google group , uit_tvm and also in Orkut and you may ask your small small doubts and let me try my level best to answer them.

NB: The above request is mainly intended for newbies like me OK? Pros...part me..HEheh...

Sniffing through the Network Traffic!

A Packet sniffer is a program that monitors the network traffic passing through your computer. A packet sniffer that runs on a PC's that's connected to the Internet through a modem can tell you your current IP address as well as the IP address of Web servers of the sites you visit.

Sniffers are basically data interception programs .They work because the Ethernet was built around a principle of sharing. Most networks use what is known as Broad cast technology, which means that every message transmitted by one computer on a network can be read by any other computer on that network. However computers can be made to accept messages , even if they are not meant for the, by means of a sniffer.

A sniffer is usually passive- it only collects data . Hence, it becomes extremely difficult to detect a sniffer.When installed on a computer , it will generate some small amount of traffic ,though, and is therefore detectable.

Sniffing tools.

tcpdump : tcpdump is a powerful tool that allows us to sniff network packets and make some statistical analysis out of those dumps. One major drawback to tcpdump is the size of the flat file containing the text output. But tcpdump allows us to precisely view all the traffic and enables us to create statistical monitoring scripts.
sniffit : This is a robust packet sniffer with good filtering.
Ethreal : A free network protocol analyser for UNIX and Windows. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a captured file on disk.
Hunt : The main goal of the HUNT project is to develop toosl for exploiting well-known weaknesses in the TCP/IP protocol suite.
Dsniff : Dsniff is a collection of tools for network auditing and penetration testing. dsniff , filesnarf ,mailsnarf , msgsnarf , url snarf and webspy passively monitor a network for inetersting data (passwords, email, files etc ) . arpspoof , dnsspoof and macof facilitate the interception of network traffic normally unavailable to an attacker 9 e.g., due to Layer-2 switching).
