By Chica Umino

With Morita in the U.S., the gang find themselves wondering just what he’s up to out there (with some hilariously illustrated examples between each chapter). Summer clips along, with Hagu possessed by and absorbed in her work, Takemoto wondering if he wants Morita to ever come back and the same old romantic entanglements between Ayu and Mayama. But, once Mayama’s co-workers find out about Ayu, they’re more interested in her than Mayama would like. When Mayama’s co-worker, Namiya, tries to get closer to Ayu, Mayama finds himself (and his ego) more involved in keeping them apart. At the same time, Mayama’s still quietly pining for Rika, his old boss.

If there’s one constant theme in this volume, it’s unrequited love, and much of the volume is dedicated to illustrating what lengths the characters will go to for their love. Takemoto’s in love with Hagu, but Hagu loves Morita; Ayu loves Mayama, but Mayama loves Rika. It’s painful to watch, but, true to josei form, is heartwarming in the way it made me reminisce on the idealized love we dream of when we’re younger. Despite the obvious lack of return on their feelings, Mayama, Ayu and, to a lesser extent, Takemoto hold steadfast to their emotions, never admitting defeat. In it’s own way, it’s admirable, but, at the same time, sad.

What I love about Honey and Clover is the art. Chica Umino’s style is simple, with thick lines and a rough feel. It fits this manga well — all of the characters are only beginning to live independently and are precariously perched on the beginning of the rest of their lives. Umino’s illustrations perfectly communicate this, with expressive characters and swift movement. I especially love the small asides and the silly imagined scenes. This, along with the lack of pattern in panel work, really gives this story a youthful, exuberant feel, much like first love itself.

Honey and Clover is a goofy, yet touching, story examining the romantic entanglements between a group of friends at a local small arts college. It’s about living, loving and growing up when you’re not even sure what “growing up” means. I’d highly recommend Honey and Clover to anyone interested in a good laugh and unafraid of discomforting affairs of the heart.

Review May Contain Spoilers

I am usually not very keen on BL anthologies, but this one holds a lot of charm and was hard to put down. Each of the chapters featured likeable characters and engaging situations. There wasn’t a stinker in the bunch, which was a pleasant surprise. Momoko Tenzen’s art style is a little no frills for my taste, but emotions were convincingly portrayed as the young men in each story examined their feelings of attraction, confusion, and love. These never stray from the sweet side of romance and courtship, and are nothing like the title suggests.

My favorite chapter was “Midori Vivid in My Eyes.” After Takamiya saves Sonoda from a terrifying caterpillar, he wonders if he made a mistake. Sonoda is soon fawning over him, treating him to lunch and buying him expensive presents. Is it true that Sonoda is as weird as everyone says?? Takamiya is one of those sweet, concerned characters who worries about everyone. A chance meeting with Sonoda gives him a new buddy, and while I could understand his discomfort from Sonoda’s attentions, it was also easy to see why he was so quickly caught up in Sonoda’s spell. Sonoda has a gift for making people feel special, and the fact that he was filthy rich didn’t hurt, either. The conflict between the characters was convincing, as was the resolution.

The rest of the stories revolved around couples who have know each other since childhood. This is a favorite plot device of mine, and I always enjoy the evolution of good friends into lovers. Their relationships are already established, they know and accept the flaws in the other’s personality, and the progression to devoted couple is usually very believable. There’s that moment of denial when one of them rejects their feelings for the other, but the inevitable realization that they were made for each other never fails to please.

Grade: B+

-While most of the mangasphere is focusing on the best of 2009 so far, I have noticed that these blogs and sites are spotlighting the mainstream. What about a little love for the fringes? What about some love for the weird and kinky? What about Toranoana`s Best Selling Eros Titles for 2009. Get your hankies ready boys (and girls)…And I would you get a friend to call the local blood bank.

Heh, only number 10. Need to work on the marketing a little more… (Akiba Blog)

-Hey Surat!! Big news out of the latest Jump Festa has “food manga” Toriko in line to an anime in the near future. Maybe Viz will license that series for you now. (Kyo mo Yarareyaku)

-So maybe it is a little early to say how well the current administration is doing, but the election results are in from Japan…The Legend of Koizumi is by far the craziest manga out there right now. And volume two is on its way. The mahjong version of former Prime Minister Koizumi has battled GW Bush, GHW Bush, V Putin, Pope Benedict and Kim JI in previous chapters with each falling against his Rising Sun tsumo. Well this time there are threats from Nazi`s and nuclear weapons… The mahjong manga specialist site that posted this news wants to remind you all to–Hate the players, don`t hate the game manga!! (Kindai Mahjong Manga Seikatsu)

-In his latest Manga Structure column manga critic Nakano Haruyuki asks something that the US market has been asking for a while–”Can pubs just toss manga out there and expect them all to sell?”Nakano-san doesn`t believe they all will. The truth is though that there are pubs that feel manga should just sell no matter how much editorial production is involved. How strong is the contents power?? I just wish he focused the enitre piece on manga and not sidetrack with mooks and character guides. (Manga Daimokuroku)

-Another Comiket is just around the corner and my money is on K-On! dominating this show. However BeAtarai has possibly found a dark horse contender…Evangelion?!! Considering how popular the movies are and the recent resurgance of GAINAX love by the otaku, maybe Eva’s newest shoujo pilot will get DJ artists to plug in.

You cannot hate the game, as the game is blind to prejudice and it leaves judgement to the participants and their followers. Hating the player is easy cause players can be complete asses.

In volume 3 of REAL you have three asses who are on different paths in their lives. One is moving on, while the other two are struggling to get on their feet (literally in the case of Takahashi). And the only thing that gives them pause and hope is basketball. The game gives them a stage to shine. The game gave them a chance to get closer to their family. The game has provided their best memories in their young adult lives. And now the need to get back on the court is what will give them strength.

The game of life is REAL. The game can be cruel, and it can hurt. And if the game is taken from player, they will quickly realize that every match is worth is every hi and low.

Dangit!! How come no one is reading this. It might be the best comic out there right now.

Eva, Eva, Eva, Eva, Eva…Is stoked about Emma!

EmmaEmmaEmmaEmmaEmma! I’m so excited. I like to read favorite manga in huge chunks, so I’ve been saving up my copies of Emma for when I have a big enough block of time to fit in several volumes at one go. Imagine my dismay (I cried a little) when I realized I’d bought two copies of volume five and NO copies of volume six. And now volume six is nowhere to be found (it is being reprint). Poor me! So, people, don’t dilly dally. Get your copy today.

Lorena`s a budding Emma fan, but she`s a hardcore Aihara fan…And anyone who loves Aihara gets major MangaCast points!!

I’m just getting started on Emma, but the latest volume is more of a standalone series of stories exploring the side characters in the elaborate, Victorian-era “Emma-verse.” Regardless, I can’t say I wouldn’t mind spending a little more time there and will most likely pick this one up.

But, I would be lying if I didn’t mention I’m also excited for last week’s release of volume two of Honey Hunt — it’s melodrama at its finest by Miki Aihara, of ever-dubious Hot Gimmick fame. After reading along in Shojo Beat up until the mag’s demise, this is a can’t-miss train wreck of a story with a love triangle to boot!

Erin…Sigh, I have never been more disappointed. Morinaga love? Haven`t read EMMA? Not interested in Honey Hunt? Three strikes Space Girl! No seinen for you!!

My comic shop listed My Heavenly Hockey Club volume 8 as coming out this week. I’ve been reading Your My Secret, Morinaga’s earlier title, and I think Hockey Club is better - although essentially the jokes are the same in both, Hockey Club is a little more innovative (with hot springs chickens and bear goalies).

I still haven’t read Emma.

I was reading Honey Hunt in Shojo Beat, but it doesn’t seem compelling enough for me to buy the books.

By Osamu Tezuka
Price: $16.95
Publisher: Vertical

The good doctor, Black Jack, has quite a few adventures in this sixth volume. I think a quote from the first chapter describes this volume all too well — in reference to Black Jack, “Is he a god…or some machine?” Like a surgical machine, Black Jack bounces from locale to locale, saving lives and being fairly compensated where he can.

Again, Osamu Tezuka takes the opportunity to explore themes of life and death, love and man’s power over nature. Tezuka’s specialty is exploring what exactly “humanity” is and there is no doubt that “Black Jack” illustrates both the large and small moral questions that have plagued man throughout time. While Black Jack seems cold and callous through his pursuit of high fees, he does have a heart and sticks to the Hippocratic oath as much as he can while running from the law. While he understands his precarious perch as a surgical genius, he nonetheless has the confidence to save others’ lives, no matter the supposed gamble.

While this is my first read into the world that is “Black Jack,” there was no sense of being lost as a reader. These are encapsulated stories that illustrate the fragility of human existence — something Tezuka had a steady hand at doing and a theme he explored through most of his work. I enjoyed the episode-by-episode, open-ended format of the stories herein. My favorite story is probably “Nadare,” where Black Jack has helped a fellow doctor’s pet deer by transplanting its brain and allowing it to have higher thought. By doing so, the deer goes on a murderous rampage and it calls into question the relationship between man and the animal kingdom.

Much like “Nadare,” Tezuka shares a moral question in each story, but he never seems to explicitly direct the reader to an answer. Additionally, he does a great job of relating the story without extensive dialogue, never running into the too-easy route of “telling” the story instead of “showing” it.

As it is Black Jack’s nature to keep to himself, even the silent responses he shares with others are telling. Whether it’s disgust or surprise, Tezuka simply illustrates Black Jack’s restrained response, never exaggerating it as he might with other characters. Well-done scenery and grand vistas are peppered throughout this book, in both urban and rural settings. Additionally, the surgical close-ups are methodical without bordering on the grotesque like other manga and demonstrate Tezuka’s medical experience. Throughout, the large cast of secondary characters are easy to tell apart and kept unique in their own way; Tezuka never “recycles” character design, giving a fresh look to every story in this collected volume.

I truly enjoyed my first foray into “Black Jack” and am dismayed that it took me so long to get into this series. For those who enjoy episodic manga, intriguing characters and one man’s determination to save lives because of the cost involved, “Black Jack” is highly recommended. But, I know others will enjoy it, too.

Ahh…I cannot say how weird it is to read about a CMX panel at AX. I remember sitting on them for a while. SIGH

Oh man CMX, I don’t know how they keep on doing this but they seem to find the best Hakusensha has to offer. Yeah, there are titles that might sell more units, but CMX’s shojo licenses are almost always universally enjoyable. I just wonder why they haven’t tapped Hakusensha’s seinen catalog cause there are some quirky titles in there as well (though I don’t think those titles have as much cross-over appeal).

Always good to see TP doing well, and if interviews and media reports are to be trusted a smaller and more specialized TokyoPop looks to be poised to bounce back well in the Q3 2009.

If Amazon.ca is to be trusted 2010 looks even better. Lissa at Kuriousity has found a handful of new TP licenses and a few are definitely worth making some noise over. Deadman Wonderland is a title I know personally from being in the industry was on the wishlists for a few pubs. This series is a twisted and complex shounen title with big time media-mix potential. And I have wondered why Happy Cafe wasn’t picked up sooner. Cute and quirky this series looked more like a CMX title to me, but should fit in nicely into TP’s smaller catalog if given enough publicity.
