Chinglish is everywhere

Though English lession is compulsory subject in China Schools, but the Chinese typical English “Chinglish” is still everywhere(maybe that’s why it is everywhere). Here are two pictures taken in one of the hospital in Nanning, Guangxi. Seems those English on direction signs is not for English speaking person…

Nanning Picture: Stall for entertainment

This is a picture taken on a very ordinary stall on a street side of Nanning:

It is a stall offering small games for entertainment which you some times can see on many street side of Nanning Guangxi and other places in China. You can find them on the roadside, in the park or some squares. It offers some small games. You can pay to paly these small game, and if you play well, you can get a reward or some prizes from the owner.
It is highly welcomed by most of kids. Many parents taking their children out for a walk, usually will let the kids to play this small games:

Baloon shooting. On the left of the picture you can see many balloons are hanging on a red cloth, in front of the balloons there is a table, and there are some BB guns. You can pay to use that BB gun to shot the balloons for fun.

Rings. You see those small toys on the ground? Those are the prizes. The owner will give you some big rings, and you have to stand behind a line and throw the rings to hitch the prize you want, then you can own it.

Toy-Hit. The old man is placing some toys on the shelf. You can get some small sand bags, you can throw it towards the toys on the shelf. Again if you hit the toy down, you own the toy too.

Most of time you will find these stalls in the evening, because then the parents will have time to take the kids out. But in some parks you can find them in the daytime to let the tourists to have fun.

CoCo Lee Nanning Concert

CoCo Lee(李玟)，a famous Chinese American singer and dancer, is going to have a concert in Nanning, Guangxi China on December 16, 2010. The concert will be held in Guangxi Stadium(广西区体育场) next to the People’s park in Nanning. And now you can make a booking on the internet.

It is not the first time CoCo Lee come to Nanning and Guangxi, she performed in the Nanning Folk Song Festival concert a few years ago, and shoot a ad in Guilin before.

At the concert night, there will be many Lee’s fans will come to Nanning to enjoy this wonderful concert.

November 11, Bachelor’s Festival!

It is funny that November 11th is a unique entertaining festival in Mainland China, called as Bachelor’s festival(光棍节), or Guang gun Festival or One’s Day. It is popular amoung the young people like college students, especially those haven’t got a boyfriend or girlfriend at that time. Not just in Nanning, but all over China’s young peole know this unofficial festival. People pick this date because 11.11 looks like 4 smooth sticks, and “smooth stick(光棍)” in Chinese means bachelor, those who is still single. It is really a funny Chinese slang. So the young people pick the date has most of “1″ in it to be the One’s Day!

We reach the max of the year on Nov.11~

As the Nov.1 has three “1” in the date, so it also been called as Small Bachelor’s festival, and the Nov.11 is called as Big Bachelor’s festival. And the most memorable moment is 11:11 am, November 11th. I have no idea who invent this

Happy One's day

In this festival Young people may go to parties to meet new friends, and many of them wanna find a boyfriend or girlfriend to say good bye to single life. And they invent many special way to celebrate this special festival and have fun. One way of doing some special things like to eat 4 youtiao 油条(because Youtiao looks like number 1), get on No.11 bus with friends…Well really a good time to have fun.

Nanning Bird and Flower Market

Nanning YuanHu Bird and Flower Market(南宁园湖花鸟市场) is the biggest market selling flowers, bonsai, pets and other small toys in Nanning. It is going to be demolished for railway expansion and solving the nearby old traffict problem. I guess it might be the last time to see this market.

Nanning bird and flower market is to the east side of Nanning People’s Park(南宁人民公园). It is on the top of a hill right across the east side of People’s park. It is the most famous local place selling many kinds of flowers, plants, bonsai, birds, pets and many other things. It has been the biggest flea market for decades, making it a crowded place every day. People like to buy pets, birds, plants there, and I believe it has the most complete sorts of plants that you can find in Nanning, China. You can find many shop are selling handicrafts, small toys, souvenirs even special rocks, and on weekends you can find some people are selling some old stuff belong to couple of centries ago. Many old people like to walk aroud after they exercised in the People’s park in the morning.

Though it is the biggest market, but the public traffic near it is a historical problem. During rush hour, the traffic jams every day at the crossing right infromt of this market. And because is next to the railway(the railway just out side the market’s fence), the expansion of the railway request this market to be move away. Local govenment decide to demolish this market in the next couple of months, which means this current biggest flower and birds market will disappear soon. Bad news is thers is no a good place for the merchants to form a new market like this. Hope they can find a new market soon.

Shimen Forest Park, Nanning China

All public parks(except Nanning Zoo) in Nanning was ticket-free since May.1.2008, giving all citizens many places to go for a walk. Today I’d like introduce the Shimen Forest Park(石门森林公园), it seems it is the only park in Langdong(琅东) district. Though been called as forest park, acctually it is not a big park in Nanning, but it is a good place for people who live or work near by to go for a walk or do some exercise in the morning. Some times we go there for barbecue. In spring many people would like to go there to see the flowers like cherry and peach blossom.

Old man likes playing Chinese Chess in Nanning

There are two old Chinese games that many old people like to play. One is MaJiang(麻将), another is Chinese Chess(中国象棋). The biggest difference between these two games is Majiang needs 4 player to play, while Chinese Chess just needs two.

You walk on the street, you some times can find two men sitting under a tree, and there is a wood board putting between them, and there are many pieces on that board, you can see the two players are focus all their attention on that board. Yes, that is the Chinese Chess Board, and they are playing the game now.

Most of the time there must be a crowd of people there watching these two men’s play, especially that is a nice play, all the onlookers will stand on side quietly, in Chinese called “He is truly a princely man who watches in silence a game of chess”.

Chinese chess is a very popular game among people here, almost every one knows how to play. Though is called “chess” but it is totally different from the chess in the west or Japan.

2010 Nanning food festival

Nanning food festival, also called as 2010 Nanning – South East Asia food festival(2010南宁-东南亚国际旅游美食节), was hold in Yongzhou old street(邕州老街) these days, it was held at this time of year for the past 10 years. In this festival, you can eat delicious food from all over China and many other South East countries. It lasts 9 days and it attracts 360,000 more people to go to Yongzhou old street to enjoy the nice foods and shows.

2010 Nanning International Folk Song Arts Festival Concert will be held in the new Guangxi Sports Center(广西体育中心). This new gym just complete and put to use on August 2010. It locates in Wuxiang new district, and its location hasn’t been marked on many maps. I mark it on google maps and post some photos here.
