In celebration of Fishbone’s incredible 40 year career in music, we decided to throw a party! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Over the course of the last month, I have been painting a massive 6 ft by 16 ft painting to honor Fishbone’s legacy. Additionally, I made a phone call to my friends at Fall Brewery in San Diego and asked them if they would like to host a party and celebrate with a fresh new IPA named Party At Ground Zero.. Of course they said YES! They were more than excited to celebrate Fishbone with us and the rest of San Diego.

But one thing was still missing.. Fishbone!

So, we called them up and asked them to come and they also said YES! 🤯

So it is now the OFFICIAL Party at Ground Zero at Fall Brewing Company! Come celebrate with us this Friday August 5th at 6pm. Fall will be releasing Party At Ground Zero West Coast IPA and Josh and I will both be there with 4 original members of Fishbone.. RAD! ❤️

Here are a few progress pics taken while I was painting the large canvas. I decided to honor Fishbone by giving them the same treatment I did for the BossToneS, painting a large landscape canvas that includes some of the best moments of their career.

The print version of this painting will be available at the party on Aug 5th starting at 6PM. The remaining prints will go on sale online the following day, Saturday Aug 6th at 10AM PST. Here are some print details:
Print measures 17” x 42” (including borders) - printed on fine art matte paper with an edition size TBD. As always, we are keeping the cost of the print as low as possible - Prints cost $60 ea and will be sold first come first serve with a maximum of three prints per customer.

This year has been very exciting for my art. I've worked with several galleries, had a great show in Las Vegas, and as usual, created tons and tons of new art. I also started working with some amazing people on some very exciting projects this year including renowned pop artist and founding member and bass player Horace Panter of The Specials, Rock'n'Roll Las Vegas photographer Julie Bergonz, rock star and producer Bob Kulick and one of my lifelong favorite bands,  The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I've also met some super cool people along the way and have experienced tremendous support from so many in this last year. I am truly grateful to be surrounded by so many RAD friends, both old and new.

The iconic Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island in San Diego has invited me to show some of my work in their Est. 1888 store located in the Lobby. I will be signing prints and talking with people from 10AM-2PM on Nov 25th & 26th. I've hand-selected a body of holiday themed prints that I've done over the years that is perfect for The Del. We'll also have on hand a variety of other prints as well as a few originals and limited editions. Come down and say hi if you're in the area and also check out the super-Christmasy decked out Hotel, especially beautiful this time of year. I've included a Holiday Store on my website for those of you that live out of town!

Horace Panter is a founding member of the legendary 2-Tone ska band The Specials and also an accomplished pop artist. When I first saw his paintings I was blown away and immediately wanted to do a collaboration with him. We have done two collaborations to date where I have painted my art all over and around two of his pop art cassette giclees - his Rancid Timebomb tape and his Clash Rock the Casbah tape. Being able to make art with a music legend who I have grown up listening to has been an honor. The punk and ska bands I listen to have the same messages of love, unity and compassion that I try to always express in my work. Horace is a living example of those values and I couldn't be prouder to be on the same canvas as him. Horace just finished his amazing exhibition in Los Angeles with a couple of his UK mates called Cassettes Vs Vinyl and he had our original Rancid cassette piece at the show as well as prints of both. Admittedly I have a hard time letting go of my originals, however in the spirit of the holidays I am releasing some of these originals and they can be purchased DIRECTLY from us - you no longer have to go through a gallery system to own one. Yay! Some paintings are new, some are from my personal collection and they are now up for grabs for the first time direct from me. Las Vegas, NV (AUG 6, 2016) - Skye Art Gallery is pleased to present It’s a Rad, Rad, Rad, Rad World, an exhibition of work by inclusion artist Nan Coffey.  The event takes place on Aug 6, 2016 from 6pm to 11pm. The show will feature the largest collection of works ever shown by Nan Coffey in one place at one time. Included in the show will be newly released, never before seen originals and works that have been pulled from Coffey’s personal collection that will be offered for sale for the first time. In addition, the exhibition will be supported by limited edition prints as well as hand painted objects and, for the first time ever, screen prints hand-pulled by the artist. The artist will be in attendance.

“It’s a Rad, Rad, Rad, Rad World" is about celebrating life, creativity and the rad world that we are lucky enough to be existing in today. Art is personal and I include myself in every single piece of work that I produce. The process of making art is the real art. To be able to take the flood of images in my head and pour them into reality is the reward.  As such, my style, my methods and my techniques have evolved and morphed over the years. My work is rapidly becoming more personal, more expressive, more emotional. I am constantly trying new ways to show people who I am through the things that I create and the manner in which I create them. Since most of the first round of skulls have already sold, I decided to create a new batch of Art All Over skulls. Check them out! Six brand new skulls with themes of A Clockwork Orange, Alice In Wonderland, Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, Rebel Pirates, Charlie Brown and of course I couldn't do a Clash skull without following it up with a Ramones skull. Rock! I experimented with cel vinyl and acrylic paint on a few of these skulls and loved it. Check out the video of Step One in The Birds skull process below. Last month while out doing some shopping, I came across some super rad plastic skulls in a department store. There were rows and rows of them staring out at me from across the aisle, all exactly the same and all perfectly lined up and calling my name. I knew as soon as I saw them that they would make perfect canvases for my art. I love the idea of taking objects that are cheaply manufactured in bulk and turning them into unique pieces of elevated art. Just think of it - there are 1,000s and 1,000s of these skulls in the world that all look exactly alike - that is, until I got my hands on a few of them...

Throughout the years of producing art, I have developed a very good understanding of what medium will work with different types of textures and surfaces. It’s a strange talent to develop, but I can touch pretty much any object and know if it will take paint or ink well and what brand and application will work the best. As soon as I picked up the first skull, I could tell that Sharpie pens would work great on these. Sometimes with new objects that I acquire, I will do a tiny test area just to be sure the medium I think will work best actually will work best, but in this case, I just went for it and began to draw all over them. I did not pre-plan any of the art for any of these - as with a lot of things I do, I was able to visualize how each one would look when I finished, so I allowed the images to flow from my mind, through the Sharpie, and onto the skulls. As I worked, each one took on a different theme from Tiki to Voodoo to David Bowie to (of course) The Clash.

Over the course of the last month, I have been working on my most ambitious project to date. Comprised of 2 canvases and one cube, this project spans 379 square feet of painted space. All of the pieces were created in a free-form fashion - that is, I did not pre-plan any of the art, I just painted as the images came to me. Working like this is very freeing - to not have any constraints on what I paint or how I paint I think makes the work far more fun to look at for the viewer and in the end, it is a lot more fulfilling for me as an artist. The photo above was shot by the always awesome John Schulz with Studio Schulz in San Diego. After John shot my last painting, which came in at 178 square feet, I explained to him that for the next project, I wanted it to be at least twice as big. I told him I intended to create 2 new paintings that would come in at around 180 square feet each, but that I also wanted a painted object in the "room" with me. He just happened to have a great big cube in his studio just waiting to be be covered in art : ) So, I painted two large scale canvases and one cube - the idea being to fully saturate the space with my art and in essence, give the viewer a glimpse into what it is really like in the mind of an artist. Or at least, in the mind of this artist.. Below are some in progress shots that were taken by Josh Joslin as I worked on each component:

Both of the canvases used were approximately the same size - below are photos of each completed piece. The top piece served as the wall and bottom piece served as the floor in all of the studio shots:

We had a lot of fun setting up the pieces in the studio, trying various angles. We wanted to show the expanse of the project while still keeping the focus on the purpose of the project. Below are some additional photos from the shoot, all shot by John Schulz:

For the last 8 months or so, I have been making increasingly large paintings. There is really no other way to put it. In December 2013, I set out to create the largest single painting I had ever conceived. At the time, and at 66 square feet (72 in x 132 in), it seemed so huge. I wanted to create something very uplifting, very positive, and that would speak to my desires to stand up for myself and be successful in a fine art world that seems to embrace the immediacy of digital work over the type of work that I do – fine art paintings done solely by me without the help of a team of hired assistants. Here’s the thing - the commercial works I create are extremely time consuming – from the conception of the idea, to the hand drawn sketch to the finished drawing to the completed painting that is achieved only by painting repeated layers of paint one on top of the other over and over in order to achieve the bright, clean appearance. These are great fun and people seem to dig them. However, often times as I work on them, I feel the desire to break out from the repetitive nature of the process and make something much bigger, much louder, much more immediate. When I decided to work much larger, my desire was two-fold: to create not only an uplifting piece of art, but I wanted to have the freedom to express myself in a less constricted, more free-form manner. I wanted to show people visually what goes on in my head as I work day in and day out. As I sit and paint these many layers of paint on my more “normal” sized works, my mind is often a maze of other ideas and thoughts, other dreams, other desires, other expressions that I simply cannot achieve when I work on the smaller, commercial works. So I chose to not pre-draw this first large work – I essentially just went for it. And here was the result:

This is acrylic paint on primed canvas and was painted entirely on the floor of my condo at the time.  I titled it The Turning Point because it is symbolic of the moment I realized that I could be much more than just someone who paints perfect little pictures in a studio – that I could work larger and more expressive and that if I am true to myself and if I stand up for myself, I can achieve anything.  I had my husband Josh photograph me sitting on top of this work simply because I thought it would make for a pretty cool picture:

Although I did not create this first large-scale work for any reason other than to see if I could in fact do it, it ended up in the storefront window of Tender Greens in Downtown San Diego. Here is what it looked like:

It is difficult to put into words the feeling I had upon completion of that piece – it was gratifying beyond words. I did not expect, however, that it would foster within me a desire to work even bigger. As I stood and looked at the work hanging in the window for the first time I thought – this is cool, but it’s not big enough, it doesn’t really show what I can do. So, I went even bigger. A lot bigger. At over 170 square feet (120 in x 208 in), the next painting was truly a feat to accomplish. The entire piece was painted in black acrylic, flat on the floor, just like the first one. However, this time, as I sat on the canvas, all stretched out around me, I was overcome with a feeling of complete joy – it sounds silly, but the truth is, I felt like I was, for the first time, able to really and truly be IN my painting – that I was actually a part of it. I worked area by area, a section here, then over there, then at one end, then at the other. I walked all over it as I worked and really felt connected to what I was doing. As I worked on it, it became very clear to me that I was creating a work that for the first time would truly be a reflection of who I am and what I am all about – which is why the piece is titled Who Are You? The Alice symbolism is there, intertwined with memories of friends and family and music I love and things I love. This piece was and is extremely important to me as it is a true expression of who I am now as a person and as an artist – it is, in a sense, a story of why I am the way I am and why I think the way I think. We are all a product of our past – the things we have done, the things we have not done, the people we have met, the decisions we have made along the way – it all makes us who we are and this painting is symbolic of all of those things as well as a reminder to stay true to who you really are as a person.  As I worked away at this painting, I began to visualize shows and exhibits and the way that I would do things if given the opportunity. And that is, that I could use both methods of painting – the smaller, full color, more layered pieces as well as the larger more free-form, black and white pieces – to really show who I am and what I can do. This was the end result:

As I worked I also envisioned how I wanted the piece to be photographed – I knew that I would not be able to display this massive canvas as of yet, but I still wanted to show it to people. It’s difficult to show scale on the internet and I wanted people to really understand just how big this piece was and just how important the work is to me. This was not something that Josh or I could accomplish, so I looked to our local community to find someone who would understand the vision and frankly, who would help me accomplish what was in my head. The resultant photograph was exactly what I envisioned it to be – and I could not have done it without the help of John Schulz with Studio Schulz in San Diego. This is that photo, shot in his super rad studio, shot from a bird’s eye view: 

Of course, as soon as I was finished with this painting, I wanted to move on to the next one. I had more black and white works in my head, but I really felt this inner desire to see if I could pull off a painting of this scale in full color. So, again, I decided to just go for it. At 178 square feet (120 in x 212 in), this full color work dwarfs the size of my last full color painting by so many feet its ridiculous. The title of this one is (When She’s) Ten Feet Tall and it is symbolic of my journey as an artist – a desire to stand out and stand up and show people that I am capable of even bigger things. To photograph this one was quite a feat. I wanted this one to be shot upright and given the massive size, it was not going to be easy. We again went to our friends at Studio Schulz and like magic, they just made it happen. The day after that piece was shot, I immediately began working on the next one. My desire to work even bigger will be even more evident in the coming weeks.  Here is a peek at the next one in progress – this time, the work will span over 350 square feet – yep, twice the size of the last ones:

See this big, blank space? This is an outside window on Broadway that is part of the restaurant. They have also commissioned Nan to paint a 6 piece farm to fork narrative that will hang in this window display. At 11 ft by 7.5 ft, it's much larger than our pic here makes it seem! Nan is the newest edition to the awesome Stephen Clayton Gallery on Coronado Island. A fantastically fun gallery filled with Dr. Seuss art, Disney Fine Art, and more, this gallery has had their doors open to the community for over 20 years. They have already sold three of her original paintings, with a few selling before her body of work was even installed on the walls!


We're also excited to announce that we just took a number of Nan's paintings to print for the very first time. In an effort to support the local arts community and to ensure the finest prints available, we are using a local printer that has been in business for over 30 years. Their quality is quite frankly amazing - the prints look so much like her originals, it is difficult for even us to tell them apart! Stay tuned for news in the upcoming weeks that will include a brand new installation of original paintings at the new Tender Greens Restaurant in Downtown San Diego. 

Nan will also be releasing a limited edition print this summer with them that will feature Mr. Bali Hai himself. This is the first time that Bali Hai has worked with an artist to release a print like this and we couldn't be happier. The artwork has already been approved and the painting will be completed in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more details. Back in January I met with two of the owners of Tender Greens Restaurants, a fast casual restaurant chain in California. Josh and I have been regulars at their Point Loma location since it first opened a couple years ago. Their food is fantastic to say the least! This summer they are opening their 13^th location in downtown San Diego on the corner of First and Broadway and they’ve hired me to create a permanent installation of original paintings for this new location. As we began conceptualizing the work for this new project, they asked me to also create new originals for their Point Loma location as well.  Good times indeed.

I first met with co-founder/owner Erik Oberholtzer and executive chef/owner Pete Balistreri. They were introduced to my work thanks to their catering manager, Heidi Wahl whom Josh met by chance one night while managing at Bali Hai.  Heidi showed my work to Erik and Pete and we all decided to meet.  I invited them to my place so they could see some of my work in person. The fact is, the internet is a great tool to introduce people to your work, but it really does not do justice to seeing things like art in person. I guess this was a good idea because it seemed clear to me from the start that this would be a great match – their concept, food philosophies, and friendly demeanors seemed to meld well with my painting style. Plus, they love art. You can just tell. By the questions they ask, the artists they talk about, the interest in my background. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it turns out they have already worked with some of my favorite artists on their other locations – Chris Reccardi for their Pasadena location, Jeremyville for Santa Monica, 123Klan for Irvine and Jon Burgerman for La Jolla. More good times. This puts me in good company for sure.

I’ve started work on their Point Loma location first. Here are a few pieces of concept art for that project. The pic at the top is one of the finished works for Point Loma, a five foot tall original for the center wall. More soon! Cheers!

Here is the finished piece that Nan live painted in the Caesars Palace Forums Shops in Las Vegas plus some additional shots from the live event. The piece it titled Callin' In Sick, a reference to one of Nan's favorite Buck-O-Nine songs.
