It's been an up and down weather pattern the last few weeks. Things look like they are finally going to heat up as both the air and water temps rise. I've been getting a mixed bag of fish and have had to work hard the last few days to find willing fish. I can say its been quality over quantity. I have been fishing live pilchards even though water temps were on the cooler side. I try to put my anglers on snook, redfish, and trout on a daily basis. These are the fish that southwest Florida is known for. Ive been having success everyday finding these fish. You will not find me sitting in a choppy boat waked channel jigging for ladyfish. This is a picture today of my young angler Lucas with the biggest trout ever caught on my boat. She measured 31" and ate a live pilchard on a shallow mangrove shoreline. His grandpa also caught a beautiful juvenile tarpon later in the trip.

Tarpon season is coming up fast and I have some open dates. Call or email now to reserve your spot for the silver king. The month started out great with warm weather plenty of bait and hungry redfish, snook, trout and even some small tarpon. Then we got hit with a spell of very weak tides and some small outbreaks of red tide off the beaches. It was not strong enough to hurt fish in the backwaters, but keeping bait alive caught offshore was very difficult. Most days I was able to get enough to catch some fish, others I had to cancel. The fishing has since improved and looks like the red tide is moving away making bait easy and lively. The last three days have really produced both quality and quantity. The bigger snook are coming out of their hideouts and we have caught three the last two days in the 10lb range plus numerous others in the 3-6lb range. Redfish are also on the rise and 3-5 per trip has been the average in the 4-10lb range. I haven't trout fished much, but caught them good today and they were all nice keepers released to be caught again. I have been using live pilchards on 1/0 Eagle Claw Kahle hooks on 10lb Spiderwire Invisibraid with a 30lb leader. Soon enough the tarpon and big shallow water sharks will be added to the daily catches. March is filling up fast and the April/May tarpon season is right around the corner. Most days are 76-83 with mornings ranging from 55-65. This is great weather for fishing, but can be tricky to go catching. Yes I'm having some great days and I'm having some days that aren't record breakers. The problem is normally water temps are cooler and we mainly focus on trout, pompano, black drum and redfish in deeper creeks and holes. When it's warm like this year the fish are scattered as they feel the urge to hunt for food instead of hunkering down and waiting for it to come to them. I have been throwing a good mixture of live pilchards, tube jigs and DOA Cal shad tails on 1/4oz jig heads. In the back the trout can be caught excellent one day and only a few the next, pompano made a strong showing the last few mornings and snook and jacks are still strong around the docks . The key to catching fish right now is to move around and if one method isn't producing switch it up. Till next time tight lines

The water temps are running way above average in the mid 70's and the weather is amazing. Today is my first day off in a few weeks and we have caught some great fish. I will say things have been challenging some days as fish are not where they should be this time of year. We have managed to fish mostly live pilchards with some shrimp mixed in. Snook, trout, redfish, jacks, bluefish and monster ladyfish have all been caught with a few small tarpon also. Arriving at the boat ramp this morning water temps were 64 down 12 degrees since Thursday. Our plan was to throw jerkbaits and topwaters for snook and jacks in an area that I knew would have warmer water. Arriving at our spot we found some huge 20+lb jacks that we couldn't get to eat. We had great action on jerkbaits with jacks to 7lbs and this nice 10lb snook. We changed things up as the sun got higher and went to some docks that were red hot prior to the cold front. We fished live shrimp and caught a small tarpon, 12 snook and a nice 5lb redfish. We decided to go out in the gulf to see if we could net some pilchards and find some trout. The pilchards were on the spot, but the water was still cloudy due to the nw winds the last few days. We went back inside and caught more snook on pilchards. Over all it was a very successful day considering how cold it's been the last few days and its Winter and we are still catching snook and tarpon. Weather is warming and the fish should be hungry this week. Tight lines
Captain Chris McCubbin offers full and half day fishing charters in Naples, FL. I love the warm weather, but really messes with the fish. Winter is all about pompano, trout and redfish. Colder water packs these guys in the deep holes of the backwaters and makes my job a little easier. Right now the water temps are 74-77 in the backwaters, this is to warm to get them piled up. What this means is I'm still concentrating on snook fishing. Yes I'm catching redfish still, just not putting to much effort into them as they are scattered all over. I've been catching some trout, big jacks and even hooked a few little tarpon while fishing docks, rock sea walls and bays close to the gulf. We need a good cold front to push the fish back to there winter homes. Till this happens I'll just keep focusing on catching snook and keeping the rods bent. Im pleased to say I got a brand new Yamaha V Max 200 SHO 4 stroke on the boat. This motor is truly amazing, it's very quiet, great on gas and pretty darn quick.
The fish recently seem to be a little confused. The weather this Fall was colder and windier than normal and now it's 80-84 with water temps pushing 75 in the backwaters. Its nice that it's warm, but the normal redfish, trout and pompano have been scattered when they should be bunched up. I've still been using live pilchards and concentrating my efforts on bays closer to passes. Snook fishing has been spectacular on the docks in the bay area. Im catching some really nice fish and the average fish right now is 4-6lbs with some bigger fish to 10lbs being caught and lost.Mixed in are some big jacks, redfish and some nice trout. Out off the beaches the bonita are all over the place, triple tail are still abundant you just have to run farther out with all the pressure they are getting due to nice calm seas.
Overall the fishing is really good, just have to change things up. You can't be afraid to move and try to areas as fish are still moving a lot due to warm weather and abundance of bait. Weather looks to stay warm for a while, I have days open so don't wait. The biggest was blowing up my motor on Friday while getting bait in rough weather offshore of Marco. I had to cancel both my trips an idle all the way back to Naples, not fun. I have been using a friends boat all week to run my charters. I will have my boat back up and running with the new Yamaha V Max 200 SHO by Wednesday the 28th. The weather in Naples has been a little up and down and I have had to fish places I don't fish much anymore. The docks in and around Naples are holding a lot of fish, while the backwaters have been off this week. We caught snook, redfish, trout, snapper, grouper and jacks while fishing these docks. This is just a temporary phase the fish are in right now, it's getting cooler in the gulf pushing the fish closer to the backwaters, just not cold enough for them to leave the bay yet. Fishing should improve as weather conditions stabilize and fish begin to make their ways to Winter spots. Christmas is fast approaching so don't hesitate to book your trip. We have had to change things up a little a few days due to hard nw winds. Instead of using live pilchards for bait we used DOA jerk baits and shad tails. The redfish and snook moved deeper into the backwaters to find clean water. I also came upon a huge school of black drum just off the beaches early this week. We managed to catch four to 40lbs and lost four on jigs. Things are back to normal and pilchards will be used along with the DOA's.
The waters have started to cool which means tarpon will move south and trout and pompano will move into the backwaters. These are great eating fish and also a lot of fun to catch on light tackle. Tripletail are also very abundant right now and are a blast on fly and artificial's.
Snook fishing will remain good on live bait as long as the water stays in the 70's. When it dips below they are easier to catch at night or in shallow water sight fishing them while they lay up to absorb the suns warmth. This year I plan on running trips out of Pine Island and Estero Bay on select tides for tailing redfish and big trout. I can't go into details, if you want to catch one give me a call. I had the pleasure of fishing new clients Heather and Jeff from the Lauderdale area. We found plenty of big tarpon, but the dolphins managed to rob all our baits as soon as they hit the water. We managed some really nice redfish and snook in the backwaters of Naples after tarpon fishing. Paul Webb from Canada fished two days this week and we caught tons of snook, redfish, jacks missed a few tarpon the 1st day and got one yesterday around 70lbs. The tarpon should be in the area for the next month and haven't got crazy yet, it's going to be good. Snook fishing the last week has really turned on in the backwater fishing points with current and tiny coves. I've been fishing live pilchards on an outgoing tide in shallow tannin stained water. Redfish have been best on an incoming tide and the switch to outgoing. I've been getting a few reds each trip, but haven't fished the right tides due to the late afternoon storms. Tarpon are here and they are big, that's all I can say about that. This one was caught two days ago and put on a great show. Sharks and mackeral are also everywhere and the bonita will be here soon as we get some good morning incoming tides. Tight lines and don't wait to book your trip this Fall, it's gonna be a good one.
Captain Chris McCubbin offers full and half day fishing charters in Naples, FL. Water temps have come down on the beaches and with it comes glass minnows. These little guys are the food of choice for tarpon, bonita, kingfish, and sharks. This is a great time of year to get out and catch some big fish on lures.
Recently I have been taking advantage of the great redfish bite in the Naples area. Fishing live pilchards on mangrove points and shorelines has been really good. Most of the redfish are in the 3-5lb range, but we did manage some bigger fish this week. Snook fishing is still good and should only improve until around Thanksgiving. Most of the snook lately have been caught while fishing for redfish. We have caught a few in the 12lb range, but most are 2-5lbs. If you want to get out fishing in October don't wait to call it's gonna be good. The Fall fishing in the Naples area can be the best of the year. All the main fish will be fattening up for Winter as the waters cool and bigger fish move south. It is a great time to fish for tarpon, I won't go into details as the last few years I have had to deal with people following me. Just know this, whether you want to throw lures, fly, or bait I can put you on them. Mixed in with the tarpon are bonita, kingfish, cobia and sharks. In the backwaters the redfish and snook fishing is excellent and trout will be showing up more and more as the waters cool.
The fishing lately has been very good since Issac cleared out of the gulf. Snook have been eating good on live pilchards on the lower parts of the tide. I have been exclusively fishing the deeper parts on the backwaters on the low tides and on points with good water movement. They have been on the smaller side, put make up for size with numbers. Redfish have been showing up in good numbers on the flood tide and 1st part of the outgoing tide. I have been fishing live pilchards and finger mullet on a small popping cork. They are laying very tight to the bushes so a good cast helps. I have also caught some on cut ladyfish when the snapper get to out of control. October is my favorite month to fish so don't wait to book your trip. Tight lines

I have been having great success in the mornings and late afternoon. Snook have been on the beaches in great numbers till mid day. I have been catching them on DOA CALs in the stark naked rigged on a weighed swim bait hook. The easiest way to get em is chumming with live pilchards. The biggest snook this week have been close to 25lbs and have all been caught in the shallow backwaters on big live threads. Tarpon fishing was great after the full moon, we hooked fish on every trip but one. They fed all night on the big moon and just didn't want to eat what we had. These fish have been eating the DOA Baitbuster very well in the root beer color. They also ate pinfish, threads and big pilchards. Fishing should stay good throughout the Summer, just remember to fish early and late in the day.
