Biography of Aruna Lama

Biography Summary

Aruna Lama was one of the most renowned and talented singers of Nepal. Because of her popularity and her voice, she is also known as “Swar Samraagi”. She is most popular for her sentimental songs than romantic ones. She has chosen songs that touch the heart and help the listener reflect on their sorrow. Like her songs, Aruna Lama's own life was full of sorrow and mishaps.

Early life of Aruna Lama:

Aruna Lama was born a daughter of Surya Bahadur Lama and Sanmaya. She was born on September 9, 1945 (2002, Bhadra 24 B.S) in Darjeeling, India. Because of her voice, she became quite popular in the in the locality. She charmed her listeners and soon she became known as the Nightingale of the Hills.

Aruna was inspired by her uncle CB Lama to start singing in her early life. She started singing at the early age of seven. She won a Music Competition organized by the Gorkha Dukha Niwarak Sangh in the year 1956 at the age of 11. Later, renowned singer Ambar Gurung groomed her from 1958.

Middle Life of Aruna Lama:

Aruna Lama got married in her teens to Saran Pradhan a musician, lyricist and composer. After getting married on on 9th July, 1963 she became so busy with her married life. She had little time to devote to singing. Musicians and artists requested Aruna to get back into singing. She sang to the music composition by Karma Yonzon, Gopal Yonzon, Ambar Gurung , Shanti Thatal, Narayan Gopal, Mani Kamal Chettri, Dibya Khaling and others. Soon se became one of the most sought after female singers of all time.

But, at the midnight of 1974 May-4th she lost her beloved husband. She was left alone to to support herself and her two children. She struggled through the difficulties in her life. She started to work at the Chit fund from where she soon found work at The Scheduled Castes and Tribes Welfare Office. She served the office till the end of her life in 1998.

Being a strong willed person, Aruna Lama continued her musical journey along with her job.

Later Life of Aruna Lama:

Aruna Lama passed away on the 4th February, 1998. Although she is no longer with us, her voice lives on and her memories remains in the hearts of the Nepalese people.

Narayna Gopal started singing while he was studying in Trichandra College. On the 40th anniversary of the college, Narayan Gopal performed for the first time in a public program. He didn't sing in the program - he was the Tabala-player in the performance.

The first person who identified his singing talent was his friend Manikratna Stapit. Manikratna used to live in Pyukha Tole, near Kilagal where Narayan Gopal used to live. Nearby, in Bheda Singh, Prem Dhoj Pradhan used to live. These three talents used to meet and sing together.

Narayan Gopal used to sing Hindi songs by changing the words, for fun. He was more into Tabala playing. Manak Ratna's uncle, Siddhi Ratna was a musician. His house was like a music school. They could experiment all types of music in Manik Ratna's place. But, Narayan Gopal's home was more into classic music. Narayan Gopal's father, Asha Gopal Guruwacharya has banned modern music in his home. He used to consider the modern music too light and lack-luster. But, Narayan Gopal liked modern music.

Prem and Mank had started to compose their own songs and had started singing. Narayan Gopal wanted to do a new style of singing. He asked his friend Ratna Shumsher Thapa to write six songs for him. Out of them he sang, four songs alone and two were duet songs. These were the songs:

These songs were recorded in Calcutta of India. These songs established Narayan Gopal as a credible singer of Nepal.

At the time when the East-West highway was undergoing construction - Narayan Gopal sang "Jaga Jaga Chamka He Naujawana ho ..."

That was how Narayan Gopal started his singing career.

Narayan Gopal is known as one of the few singers in Nepal who had gained popularity by singing a very few songs. It is reported that, he had only sung a couple of hundred songs and most of them are hit songs.
Here is a list of songs I have collected so far by the singer. There are 120 songs in the list so far (out of 136 songs he had recorded - please comment which are the missing 16 songs, so that I can update the list). Although Narayan Gopal had given voice to more than 500 songs, only 137 songs were recorded. He was considered the first singer who took singing as a full-time career.

'Malai Nasodha ...' was written on a cigarette packet found on the street

According to musician Deepak Jangam: Lyricist Hari Bhakta Katuwal wrote the lyrics of 'Malai Nasodha Kaha Dukha Ghau' on a cigarette packet paper found on the street at Kamaladi. The well known lyricist then handed over the paper to Deepak Jangam, Narayan Gopal, Ambar Gurung and Shanti Thatal to compose the music. Later, Narayan Gopal decided to compose the music to the song and sang it in his own voice. The song is one of the most popular songs of Narayan Gopal.

Jangam says Hari Bhakta Katuwal was one and the only lyrics who used to write lyrics in consideration with the meter of music and the tunes. He told, he hasn't met another lyricist of that level yet.

It is going to be the 83rd birth anniversary of Lyricist Hari Bhakta Katuwal in July 2, 2018. He had died in his 40s (in 2037 BS).

Katuwal is popular for his simple but meaningful poems. Songs like Daali Daalima, Pokhiyera Ghaam ko Jhulka and Malai Nasodha Kaha Dukchha Ghaau are some of the most popular songs of the lyricist.

Born in Assam, India, Katuwal migrated to Kathmandu because of the flooding in Assam.

Katuwal’s some famous works include — Yo jindagi khai k jindagi, Badnaam mera ye aankhaharu (collection of poem and songs), Spastikaran (story collection), Hari Bhaktaka Rachanaharu (poetry, songs and muktak collection). Apart from the written works, 36 of his songs have also been recorded.

27th remembrance day of Narayan Gopal held

On December 5, 2017 the 27th remembrance day of Narayan Gopal was held in places all over the world. The fans of the singer listened to his songs and remembered the greatest singer of Nepali music industry.

Born on 1996 BS in Kilagal, Kathmandu, Narayan Gopal died on Mangsir 19, 2047. He had given voice to about 135 songs in his lifetime. He had also given voice to some of the well known film songs of his time.

Narayan Gopal was shy about his singing and he was forcefully taken to do the vocal test in Radio Nepal. It was Manikratna Sthapit and Prem Dhoj Pradhan who created the music for the song he sang for the test. He had passed vocal test on 2020 BS.

Although Narayan Gopal had given voice to very few songs in his lifetime, all of his songs are special in their own way.

Vocal Test at Radio Nepal

Before starting singing and being established as a well known singer, Narayan Gopal used to be a Tabala player. He was really shy about singing. His close friends Manik Ratna and Prem Dhoj Pradhan knew his singing talents. So, they secretly submitted a vocal-test form to Radio Nepal. When it was time to go for the test, Narayan Gopal wasn't willing to go to Radio Nepal. Manik Ratna and Prem Dhoj had to forcefully take him to Radio Nepal.

That was the incident of around 2013 BS. The identity of Narayan Gopal changed as soon as he passed the vocal test.

Did you know that, N.Gopal was in fact the name Narayan Gopal preferred himself to be called. That was why during his entrance to Radio Nepal, he had registered his name as N. Gopal.
Narayan Gopal was one of those singers who became immensely popular by a minimum number of song. In his lifetime, he had only recorded 137 songs.
Everybody's favourite singer is Narayan Gopal. Do you know his favorite singer? His favourite singer of Indian Ghazal singer, Mehdi Hassan. He was such a fan that, he also loved pehelmani (body building) like Mehdi Hassan did. Mehdi Hassan once believed that, in order to be a good musician, one has to get into body building. Well, "Syando Pehelman" - that was the name Narayan Gopal once gave to himself.
Although Narayan Gopal's mother language is Newari, he didn't record any song in his mother tongue. He did sing three Newari songs. But, they were not recorded.
Initially Narayan Gopal had agreed to sing for the movie 'Maitighar'. But, later he denied singing for it.
Narayan Gopal thought advertisements were bad, like tuberculosis, he din't give his voice to any advertisements. He also protested when people tried to use his song in an advertisement.
When he was unemployed, Narayan Gopal had also worked as a motor mechanic and there are also reports that he also drove taxi.
All his life, Narayan Gopal rode a bike. While he was the managing director of Sanskritik Sansthan, he bought a car for the organization.
While working at the Sanskritik Sansthan, Narayan Gopal used drastic tactics to cut costs. He was widely criticized when he sacked 40 artists from their job at a time of Dashain. Those sacked included his own guru Manik Ratna, artists Sushila KC and Haribansa Acharya.
The only award Narayan Gopal got for playback singing was from Lions club. But, Narayan Gopal rejected that award. The organizer, Narendra Shrestha has safe kept the award at his home.

Remembering Narayan Gopal by Bulu Mukarung

Today, Mangsir 12, is the 36th remembrance day of Swor Samrat Narayan Gopal. Although he has died a long time ago, his songs are still as popular as before. The musician, Bulu Mukurung, is one of the musicians who had also spent a long time with the singer. He has recollected some of his experiences with the singer.

Moody Narayan Gopal

Bulu Mukarung met Narayan Gopal for the first time in 2036 BS. Mukurung was in Royal Academy at that time in music training. There was a program of Narayan Gopal in the Academy. He went to the stage and started singing.

While Narayan Gopal was singing, one of the persons in the audience started making noise. When the guy didn’t stop making noise, Narayan Gopal stopped singing and cried "Who is that guy. Come here." Narayan Gopal went out of the stage. At that time Mukurang met the singer for the first time - at the backstage. The situation wasn’t good at that time. After a clash few glasses of the Academy building were also broken during the incident.

Vodka Drinker Narayan Gopal

After 2037 BS, Mukurung and Narayan Gopal started meeting frequently. A play of Madhav Ghimire titled 'Shakuntala' was being staged in Academy. Musician Chandra Raj Sharma had agreed to compose the music for the play and Narayan Gopal had agreed to sing the song. I used to be in the Academy when Narayan Gopal came to practice singing.

Narayan Gopal didn’t use to practice singing right away. He used to complain about arrangement or other stuffs. So, he only used to practice on the days he liked. Before practice, he used to say, "Let’s go Bulu." We used to go to a nearby restaurant, we used to drink for a while. I used to drink Limca (a soft drink) and Narayan Dai used to drink Vodka. After drinking he used to say that he was now ready. He used to open up after drinking. He was reserved before drinking.

Editor and Publisher Narayan Gopal

Narayan Dai was close with Madhu Chhetri, Dwarika Lal Joshi, Phatteman, Bhairav Nath Rimal etc. He not only edited one of the poem collection of Bhairav Nath Rimal, he had also published the book. That was around 2034 BS. Although he was the editor of 'Bagina' for a long time. But, very few people know that Narayan Gopal also used to edit poems.

Carefree Narayan Gopal

In 2038 BS, Narayan Dai was the GM (General Manager) of Rastirya Naachghar. He was carefree even at that time. I can call hims 'Bindaas Narayan Gopal'.

One day I went to meet him with my friend Radha Krishna Lamichhane. When we reached his office, he was reading a newspaper in a carefree manner. He had taken off his shoes and had his feet on the table. He didn’t notice when we entered the room. We were there to ask him the stage for a program. He didn’t notice us for a while in the room. He didn’t cared when we coughed to tell him about our presence there. We couldn’t gather courage to call him.

After a long time, he took off his magazine and saw us. "Oh it’s you guys?" We told about the stage. He asked for a guy for the availability of the stage on the date we need. He told the stage is not available on that date and we returned.

Remembering Narayan Gopal on his 23rd remembrance day

Mangsir 19 is the remembrance day of the greatest singers of Nepal, Narayan Gopal. On December 4, 2013 various programs are being organized all over Nepal to remember Narayan Gopal. Here are some of those programs:

In Pokhara, Radio Annapurna did a special program on Narayan Gopal in the morning. In Chitwan, Radio Synergy has been playing songs of Narayan Gopal. At Narayan Gopal Niwas in Maharajgunj a remembrance program was organized at 11 AM (like last year). At Maharajgunj Chowk, another remembrance program was organized at 1 PM.

In addition to that, all FM and radios are playing Narayan Gopal's songs.

A letter of Narayan Gopal to his parents after marrying Pemala

Narayan Gopal married his pen-friend from Darjeeling, Pemala. His father was very strict on those matters. In Falgun of 2027 BS he married Pemala but he couldn't bring his wife to his home. So, he went to Pokhara to live in poet Bhupi Sherchan's home.

Both Narayan Gopal and Pemala started teaching for their living. Pemala was a teacher in Ratna Rajya Laxmi Devi School and Narayan Gopal was teaching in Amarsingh School. After living 6 months in Pokhara they returned back to Kathmandu. But, they didn't live with his parents for long. After a year of living together, Narayan Gopal moved to a rented place.

These are two unforgettable incidents told by Prakash Sayami:

Incident 1 - Koili and Koila

Once when Prakash Sayami with one of his journalist friends went to take and interview of Narayan Gopal.

A question was, "A good female single is sometimes referred as 'Koili'. What do you think a good male singer be called?"

Narayan Gopal's answer, "A 'koila'. After singing a lot and drinking, his liver is burned out - like a coal (koila)."

Narayan Gopal was an excessive drinker and that was one of the causes of his death.

Incident 2 - Job Interview

At the time when Narayan Gopal was the General Manager of Sanskirtik Sansthan. Prakash Sayami was there for a job interview. During the interview Narayan Gopal asked, "You wanted a job of an artist, what can you play?"

Prakash Sayami answered, "All I can play is a radio."

Narayan Gopal got angry and told, "He can't do anything."

Today, December 4 is the 22nd remembrance day of Sworsamrat Narayan Gopal.

On the day different programs are organized to remember the greatest singer of Nepal. Among them, one of the program is being organized at the statue of Narayan Gopal in Maharajgunj.

Born in BS 1996, Narayan Gopal died on Mangsir 19, 2047 in Kathmandu. Almost all of the songs he sang are considered melodious.

The first teacher of Narayan Gopal was his father Asha Gopal Guruwacharya and his another teacher was musician Manik Ratna. Narayan Gopal sang his first song on the music of his friend Prem Dhoj and teacher Manik Ratna.
Narayan Gopal studied music in Maharaja Firdaus Sangeet Vidyalaya in Baduda, India. At that time, he sang the popular song 'Chinari Hamro Dherai Purano ..." and presented it to his girlfriend of the time, Pemala Lama.
In his initial days, Narayan Gopal sang by the name 'NG' in Rado Nepal.
At the time Narayan Gopal was the Managing Director of Sanskritik Sansthan he had sacked some 25 artists. Among them were Sushila Rayamajhi, his teacher Manik Ratna, Shreedhar Poudel, Hari Bamsha Acharya and Madan Lama.
Narayan Gopal and Gopal Yonjan were good friends and 'Mitjyu' (very close friends 'mit' are officially declared by a special ceremony). Gopal Yonjan's first girlfriend Madan Pradhan had introduced the two music artists for the first time. Nagendra Thapa helped in building up their friendship. They became a special friends 'mit' after poet Ishowr Ballav Bhattarai organized a ceremony by lighting fire on a 'makal'.

Naryan Gopal was titled 'Swor Samrat' by Nagendra Thapa in 2027. The title was publicized by journalist/novelist/lyrist Shiva Adhikari.
Narayan Gopal had recorded 157 songs in his life. He sang three songs in his mother tongue, Newari, but none were recorded. He had saved those songs in his cassette player. Two of the songs were written by Girija Prasad Joshi and one by Durgalal Shrestha.
First solo concert of Narayan Gopal was organized in Silgudi, West Bangal, India. The event was managed by musician Divya Khaling.
After Arunma Lama Night Narayan Gopal and Ambar Gurung parted and didn't talk with each other. It was only in 2041 BS, during the time of the recording of 'Malati Mangale' poet Madhav Ghimire helped them get together again.
During the royalty era, Narayan Gopal only sang two songs written by the royal members. One was written by Chandani Shah and another by Rabindra Shah.
