That’s what successful marketers do — they test, test and test again to get the best performing piece (advertising copy, sales copy, landing page, e-mail copy, etc.) to get the best results.

The obvious truth is that if you’re not testing, you don’t know if you’re doing the best that you can’t. However, if you’re testing and you are relatively new to it, then there are several possible pitfalls that you might face. I would like to talk about one of them today.

Let’s talk about A-B split testing. Just to summarize, if you don’t know what it is, you’re basically testing one item against another. Those two items are different from each other. However, not too different. Usually you’re supposed to test

one variable. For example, a different headline, different sub headline, call to action, order form, etc.

Let me give you a scenario and then explain:

For example, you are testing a pop-up copy. You have two pop-ups with different copy.

After sending very minimal traffic to the website that has the pop up, you go check your stats… and this is what you see:

Pop-up Submissions Unique Displays S/UD
P1 2 9 22.2%

P2 25 55 45.5%

At the first glance, you might think that the P2 is performing better than P1 and that’s where the pitfalls lies.

While inexperienced split tester would say that P2 is performing better than P1, an experienced split tester would say that there is nothing enough information and the results are not statistically significant.

If you have taken a statistics class, they know what statistical significance means.

However, you’ll need to know what statistical significance is and how to calculate it to find out if your test results are statistically significant because there is a free tool that you can use to figure this out within seconds.

Introducing: Statistical Significance Calculator…

Use this tool to make a better judgment about your test results so that you don’t declare the losing copy in winter, and the winning copy a loser. After all, that would get you anywhere.

Why is this important?

But finding out whether your test results are statistically significant, you can know for sure which version is winning so that you can concentrate on the. Otherwise, you might make a quick decision, too soon, but your test results and instead of improving the performance of your piece, with a quite opposite.

What should I do now that I know this?

Now that you know about this, don’t judge too soon the results of your split-test.

1. Get enough traffic to the web site.

2. Find out if your results are statistically significant by using the free tool above.

3. If your results are statistically significant, then you can keep the winning copy and abandon the loosing one. If your results are not statistically significant, then keep driving traffic until they are.

I hope you see the value in this free tool. Have you ever used anything like this? Leave your comment below…

However, not everyone is good at writing. It doesn’t mean they don’t have something to say, it simply means they somehow are having problem converting whatever they have to say into writing. Cover the thoughts inside their mind into letters, words, sentences and paragraphs.

As an Internet marketer you have to be able to create content on demand. Content creation is one of the stumbling points for some Internet marketers because they have to hire somebody to write articles for them. This takes money and time that you have to wait for the content to be written. There is nothing wrong with hiring someone from elance.com to write articles for you, but sometimes you need something quick and you know the topic fairly well. Every situation is different.

Now, if that’s specialized content and you’re not an expert in that field, then

hiring a writer makes sense. However, when you are an expert and you simply want to communicate your expertise to others through writing, there is no need to hire anybody else did it for you if you can do it your self — faster, cheaper, and with minimum effort.

“There A Book Inside Of You Waiting To Be Written”

If you have the content in your head, then there is no reason why you can not put it into writing. It is the process that intimidates some people. When you’re writing, most of the time you read the sentence that you wrote or the paragraph to see if it sounds okay. You go back and forth, taking this and that, deleting, substituting, and changing things around. That takes a lot of time and you get frustrated. Other result, you thing that you cannot write.

Sometimes, to be able to write well you need to stop looking behind us going forward by looking only forward. What I’m saying is that you need to be able to transfer everything you’ve got in your mind onto paper and only when you’re done, then go back and edit whatever you’ve got.

Remember this: if you cannot commit yourself to doing something big, then commit yourself first doing something small. Doing something so small that is almost impossible to fail at. Over time, you’ll be able to do that big thing that you weren’t able to do in the first place.

I’m going to introduce you to two software that I use in order to create content at speed of sound. Basically, if it’s text — consider it a piece of cake.

Recently, I started using MacSpeech Dictate, which is a voice recognition software for Mac operating system. There is also one for PCs or Windows operating system, which is called Dragon Naturally Speaking.

(By the way, those are not affiliate links)

I use this software to create any kind of text content. It makes content creation so easy that it’s unbelievable. Plus, the software is relatively precise on the recognition that it makes writing, or should I say talking, very smooth process.

2 Illusive Disadvantages Of Using Speech Recognition Software:

Though there are a couple of disadvantages to using speech recognition software to create content. One of the disadvantages is that after writing with your mouth you need to go back and format the text a little bit here and there to make it easier for people to read. After all, your speech is different than the written word. When speaking, we might make grammatical errors or say something that would sound differently when written down. However, some may argue that this very disadvantage makes this kind of writing more natural sounding and therefore much more readable.

In fact, I am writing with my mouth at this very moment.

When done writing this blog post, I’m going to format this text so that it is appealing to the eye and is much more readable than plain text. By formatting I mean bolding some important words, writing some headlines for chunks of paragraphs, etc.

Another disadvantage is that sometimes the software doesn’t quite understand some words and substitutes them with another word, which sounds very similar. This can give funny. For example, the other day I was writing about affiliate marketing and instead of affiliate marketing, the software put down food marketing. Do you see what I’m talking about?

However, this is not a huge disadvantage because granted you are saving tons of time by using speech to text technology and mistakes like that shouldn’t stop you from using it.

The mindset you want to have is: Ready, Fire, Aim!

What this means is that you don’t have to get things right, you just have to get them going you can always go back and change whatever you want.

Being perfectionist, most of the time stops you from doing things, which might hinder your progress. Sometimes you just have to do it –get things going. If you don’t act, you will never know if that was a success waiting to happen or failure. Guess why? Because you never took the necessary steps to find out.

When you’re ready go get one of the speech recognition softwares mentioned above and start writing with your mouth, or should I say, writing at the speed of sound.

why people buy your products and not theirs. For

bonuses, you could. Another example, if they don’t

offer a guarantee, you could.

1. Give a money-back guarantee that surpasses a normal one. Instead of the normal timed guarantee, give them extra back. Tell them they can keep the free bonus or give them double their money back. You could also extend the guarantee’s time limit to 60 days, 3 months, 1 year, or a lifetime.

2. Tell your readers they’ll receive surprise bonuses. This’ll raise your readers’ curiosity and make them want to buy so they can find out what the surprise bonuses are. You could also not tell them and make it a real surprise. For example, imagine how you would feel if you bought a product and got a second one for free without knowing it ahead of time?

You can always sell the same product but not with the same bonuses or price. For example, you could say, “We will only be offering 460 of them at this low price, order now!”

4. Give your readers a couple of tips in your ad which will help them with their problem. This will give your business credibility and gain your readers’ trust to buy your products or services. Plus, that will get them more interested in reading the rest of your ad copy and more likely persuade them to buy.

5. Add extra subjects to your web site. Most free ad sites only allow you to submit your web site to one category. This’ll allow you to submit it to many. For example, you could submit your ad to the free e-book section if you offered a free e-book. Another example, you could submit your ad to the self-help section if you published articles about self-help information.

6. Increase the perceived value of your product by making your offer scarce. You could use limited time bonuses, low prices, low quantities, etc. One of the best ways is to make your product collectable. You could offer one version of your product with a serial number, then the next version with a different serial number, and so on.

7. Find out your competition’s weakness and use it as your “Unique Selling Proposition”. It’s the reason why people buy your products and not theirs. For example, if your competitor doesn’t offer free bonuses, you could. Another example, if they don’t offer a guarantee, you could.

Unless you make some changes to your affiliate marketing promotions, you might have to pay $11,000 to the FTC. I will explain why in a second…

“Since when,” you might ask.

Since October 5, 2009 when US Federal Trade Commission changed some of their guidelines related to affiliate marketing.

Quick summary: bloggers who endorse products must disclose any financial benefits they receive for doing so. The violators will pay $11,000 per violation.

See Full Version: New Rules For Bloggers And Affiliate Marketers

I didn’t get a call from FTC notifying me about this. Rather, Ray Edwards, an exceptional Internet marketer and brilliant copywriter wrote about this on his blog, which I was lucky to be following.

His Post: FTC Kills Affiliate Marketing?

The problem with affiliate marketing:

I thought there was a problem with current affiliate marketing due to the increasing number of fake blogs, also known as flogs, and many other tricks and tactics that the affiliate marketers are using online nowadays.

However, there seems to be no problem with the current of affiliate marketing tactics from FTC’s prospective. FTC, simply haven’t changed any thinking their guidelines concerning the food marketing since 1980s. They are just trying to update the rules according to the online environment we have right now. Back then, we obviously didn’t have the today’s food marketing.

How do I know this?

Since I have several blogs and websites that promote affiliate products, I was intrigued by this change and want to know more about it. I simply wanted to know what I can do and what I can not, so that I can apply it to my past and future promotions in order to avoid any problems with FTC.

I simply called the FTC office and talk to the person in charge of the Bureau of Consumer Protection to clarify some points.

What else did I clarify?

The current changes will have an effect starting sometime December 2009. Although, they give some time to the affiliate marketers, bloggers, etc. to adjust to the changes in the guidelines. Plus, they need some time too. So, it is safe to say that if you change whatever you’re doing to comply with the current rules by the beginning of 2010, you will be fine.

To avoid any problems, simply be transparent and explicitly inform your audience whenever you are promoting something.

Mention that you (might/will) make a (commission/money) (if/when) someone buys the product you’re promoting.

There is nothing wrong with recommending a product or service as long as you tell that you are making money by promoting the product or get a commission if they buy it.

Q: What if I have banners on my website (blog) promoting other people’s products or services?

A: Banners are fine because your visitors already know that you make money by putting that advertisement on your website. It is very similar to Google Adsense Ads… he wouldn’t tell people that you are making money from the ads because it is kind of common sense online.

Q: Can I just have a paragraph disclosing this in my terms of services, disclaimers and other legal documents that are linked at the bottom of my website?

A: No. The FTC wants to see you explicitly telling about your potential earnings in case of a purchase right next to your promotion… or in the promotion itself.

Of course, you should consult a (lawyer/legal professional) about the things that I’ve talked in this blog post, but this is what I found out when talking to the person at the FTC office.

JUST REMEMBER: Transparency is the best policy.

Update: Here is Dave Taylor’s take on explaining this “brouhaha” – Worried about the FTC going after your blog?

Here are your 7 Direct Marketing Tips:

Sell your products or services to a specific niche

market. For example, instead of selling your fishing

book to all fishermen, target it toward fly fishermen.

You could also use a price niche. You could offer

different versions of your product at lower and

higher prices. This will fit all people’s budgets.

Test your advertising and marketing. You’ll save

time, money and big headaches promoting the right

offer to the right group of people. For example, if

you know your ad pulls 5 orders out of 100 visitors,

you know you would need 2000 visitors to sell

100 products.

Persuade visitors to buy your product by telling

them the future. Tell them what’ll happen with their

life in the future if they buy or don’t buy. For

example, if you were selling a book about getting

over shyness you could say, “Imagine walking up

to any stranger and starting a conversation with

them without any hesitation.”

Offer a free trial of your product for a set period

of time. Don’t charge or bill your customers until

they have decided to buy it. That should remove

any perceived risk for them. For example, if you

gave a person a sample of your membership web

site and they liked it, they would probably join and

pay for a full membership.

Create other web sites that draw your initial target

main web site by linking to your other web sites. For

example, if you were selling investing tips, you could

create another web site about saving money and

promote it too. You would just include an ad for

your investing web site on the money-saving web

your product or service. This will motivate them to

buy. They may want to avoid pain, fear, danger, etc.

For example, you could say, “Just imagine never

having to be alone without a date on a Friday night

again.”

1. Sell your products or services to a specific niche market. For example, instead of selling your fishing book to all fishermen, target it toward fly fishermen. You could also use a price niche. You could offer different versions of your product at lower and higher prices. This will fit all people’s budgets.

2. Test your advertising and marketing. You’ll save time, money and big headaches promoting the right offer to the right group of people. For example, if you know your ad pulls 5 orders out of 100 visitors, you know you would need 2000 visitors to sell 100 products.

3. Persuade visitors to buy your product by telling them the future. Tell them what’ll happen with their life in the future if they buy or don’t buy. For example, if you were selling a book about getting over shyness you could say, “Imagine walking up to any stranger and starting a conversation with them without any hesitation.”

4. Offer a free trial of your product for a set period of time. Don’t charge or bill your customers until they have decided to buy it. That should remove any perceived risk for them. For example, if you gave a person a sample of your membership web site and they liked it, they would probably join and pay for a full membership.

5. Create other web sites that draw your initial target audience. Then you can lead your prospects to your main web site by linking to your other web sites. For example, if you were selling investing tips, you could create another web site about saving money and promote it too. You would just include an ad for your investing web site on the money-saving web site.

6. Inform people about your site or freebie through e-mail announce lists. You can find them by typing ”e-mail announce lists” in any search engine. For example, you could create a free e-zine and announce it. Anyone who subscribes will, of course, see your ads.

7. Tell your visitors what they can avoid by buying your product or service. This will motivate them to buy. They may want to avoid pain, fear, danger, etc. For example, you could say, “Just imagine never having to be alone without a date on a Friday night again.”

A very important question to ask whenever you stumble upon an opportunity:

“Is this going to move me in the direction that I want to go?”

Rich Schefren says:

Opportunist just says: How do I bring the next revenue stream. It may provide you with income, but it will not (less likely to) provide you with equity.

Strategy starts with goals

Opportunities are still fine, they can help you get to your goal, but strategy STARTS with a GOAL

Myth:

Even if you are very good at working smart, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to work HARD.

If you’re strategic enough, you can bypass work, but if you always act in an opportunistic way and not in a well thought out strategic way, then

you never get to that point where work comes optional. There are a lot of people who make a lot of money, but the day they stop making money is the day they stop working. When they stop working, they stop making money.

This is not the recipe of life of fulfillment

The key distinction between working hard and working smart is that you put thought into your work. Most of us just seek on the next opportunity that comes along and say: “Oh, that will add to my monthly income!” and we just jump on it without actually looking whether its going to drive us towards our main goal.

Strategy comes from inside out. This means that you’ve got a vision, you’ve got goals, and you focus all your action to get to your goal. That is what’s going to be the difference between working hard and working smart.

Working hard:

“I’m just going to do more”

“Oh, there is something. I can do that.”

“There is something else that I can do also.”

“Let’s do that and add to our bottom line.”

People are looking at the wrong place. They are looking at the outside as suppose to inside.

A very important question to ask whenever you stumble upon an opportunity:

How much money do you want to make by doing what, by when?

Less than a year ago, I listened to a call between Rich Schefren and Paul Lemberg. Both of them are extraordinary business coaches. While I was listening to the call, I made some notes… and today I would like to expand on some of the points they made.

First of all, let’s make it certain.

What is strategy and what is tactic? Most importantly, what’s the difference between those two?

According to Wikipedia, strategy is a plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal.

According to Tony Robbins, strategy is a specific way of organizing your resources in order to consistently get the result you want.

According to Wikipedia, tactic is a conceptual action.

The difference between strategy and tactic:

In military terms, tactics are concerned with the conduct of an engagement while strategy is concerned with how different engagements are linked.

In other words, how a business is built is a matter of tactics: the terms that it is built on and whether it should be built at all is a matter of strategy.

Same thing in marketing.

How a product is marketed is a matter of tactics: the terms that it is marketed on and whether it should be marketed at all is a matter of strategy.

In military terms, a tactic is used by a small unit of the larger the division to implement a specific mission and achieve a specific objective, or to advance toward a specific goal. A tactic is implemented as one or more tasks.

Same thing in marketing.

A specific mission, in this case, would be a specific objective that you have to achieve, such as building a list of 5000 subscribers, getting high search engine ranking, getting back links, writing an e-book, getting the graphics done, looking for affiliates, etc.

Here is a visual example for you:

If you imagine that chain, the whole chain will be the strategy and the links would be your tactics.

Therefore, strategy is not an absence of tactics. Strategy is simply a specific way you put those tactics together in order to form a plan that will get you where you want to get.

Rich Schefren: An effective strategy is not the absence of killer tactics. It’s the right packaging of the right tactics to get you what you want.

With that in mind, there are two mindsets that Paul Lemberg and Rich Schefren mentioned on this call. Opportunistic thinking — which can be considered tactical thinking and strategic thinking.

When you think opportunistically, you’re thinking: “What’s the pay off?”

When you think strategically, you’re thinking: “What’s the trade off?”

There is always going to be a pay off in whatever you do. However, what is it that you’re trading off?

Paul Lemberg: Entrepreneurs are time shifters. Time shifters and risk shifters. What this means is that an entrepreneur is someone who trades off risk for reward. Risk today, for the reward in the future. They see the opportunity, weigh whether it is worth taking risk for, so that they can build it up and have it worth more in the future.

Paul Lemberg: Opportunity seekers tend to spend a lot of time on the things that don’t make sense. Sometimes there is a pay off, but most of the time there is just energy spinning around or they spend time. However, when there isn’t, then it’s going to pay off over time.

Being opportunistic and using solely tactics to make money online is still fun as long as you know that it is not a long-term and you’re fine with it.

Have you heard of Dan Kennedy?

I was listening to one of his seminars, and one of the things that struck me the most was this (you might want to write this on a piece of paper and tape it to your wall on top of your desk).

Tools change
Principles NEVER change
Strategies rarely change
Tactics occasionally change

By knowing this, you can now decide what to focus on and in what proportion.

new freebie.

Here are your 7 Direct Marketing Tips:

1. Offer to write exclusive articles (that means you only submit them to one place) for high traffic web sites in exchange for a link back to your site. You could also target high subscriber e-zines if they include your resource box. These publishers will publish them quicker because they will be the only ones with this content.

2. Create a positive online image. Tell your visitors about fundraisers you have sponsored or that you donate a part of your profits to charity. For example, you could say, “We regularly attend fundraisers and donate about 10% of our profits to charities and aid organizations.”

3. Improve your customer service on a regular basis. Try out new technologies that make it easier to communicate with your customers over the net. For example, you could communicate with your customers or visitors by phone, instant message, web site messages, chat rooms, message boards, video conferencing, fax, e-mail, etc.

4. Ask your customers what they would like to see offered by your business in the future. This type of information can boost your sales. For example, you could find out they are interested in buying DVDs from your business. You could contact a DVD supplier and start selling them as back-end products.

5. Make sure your web host isn’t losing your sales. If you get an e-mail from someone who told you that they couldn’t access your site, it might be your host. You should ask them what kind of tracking or back-up system they use to make sure your web site is always up and running for business.

6. Allow your visitors’ experience to be an enjoyable one at your web site. Provide easy navigation, good content, fast loading graphics, search options, etc. You could offer online games that are related to your web sites theme. You could offer prizes to thehigh scorers too.

7. Keep changing or adding freebies to your web site. If people see the same freebie in your ads they will say to themselves, “Been there, done that”. For example, you could introduce a new freebie every month. People will revisit every month to get the new freebie.

If the rate at which your website visitors leave is higher than your industry standard, you should find out the reason(s) why they leave so soon without diving deeper into your website.

This is known as Bounce Rate.

I bet you wan to know how to improve the bounce rate of your website…

The lower your website’s Bounce Rate, the better. Except, if your website’s strategy is built around having your visitors leave as soon as possible through the links that you provide. One of the examples of this kind of sites would be an Adsense site, where you create content to attract visitors so that they click on the Google Adsense ads you have integrated within the content. However, we are not talking about those.

Don’t give up if your website’s bounce rate is really high.

By the way, if it is 100%, that means every person who visits your site, leaves without going deeper onto your other pages. This is sad, but there is a cure for everything. Read on.

Another data you want to pay attention to is the time an average visitor spends on your site. In most cases, the longer they stay, the better.

If you website visitors leave right away, that can mean several things:

- It wasn’t what they were looking for in the first place

Make your titles match your content, especially if your major sources of traffic are search engines like Google

- Your website is so ugly that they jump to a conclusion – “low quality content”

- Lack of credibility (you didn’t establish credibility)

The common misconception is that you have to have years of experience in the topic to have credibility. I think that there are tons of other ways to create credibility. For example, your website design can convey credibility by itself. There are others that I can discuss with you in the future posts. (leave a comment)

- And, there are more… but let’s jump to the solution (how to make your website visitors stay longer and go dipper into your website content)

There are 14 free tools that reveal why people abandon your website, and I wan to share them with you. However, I want to add one more really cool tool – HitTale. It is not free, but they do offer a 60 day free trial. I you get the Pro version, you can literally watch your visitors as they land to your website. I understand that this tool is a little different from the initial 14, but it is worth mentioning to you.

By using these free tools, you can track your website’s performance and find out what are the things that make your visitors leave so soon without getting to know your website… Then, you can improve bounce rate.

In addition to the 15 free tools, here are several articles that I like, which will help you to improve bounce rate of your website.

[If you are building a squeeze page on Mac, this applies to you too]

By the way if you didn’t know this, now you do.

Squeeze Page Defined: single web page with the sole purpose of capturing information for follow-up marketing; that means NO exit hyperlinks.

Anyway.

You are probably asking: “What does above the fold mean?”

Above The Fold – the area of the screen that you see without having to scroll down.

According to some internet marketers, direct response marketers, copywriters, and other online professionals, the opt-in box on your squeeze pages is supposed to be placed above the fold to ensure higher conversion (more subscribers). So they say.

However, earlier today I was reading an article, which is arguing that this is just a myth. You can see this article here: The Myth Of The Page Fold: Evidence From User Testing.

I personally think that this is not applicable to direct response marketing websites as much it is to e-commerce type of websites.

Direct response marketing in the example of landing pages would mean that the visitor is only given two choices when viewing the page:

- Stay on the page and act (subscribe, submit information, etc.)

- Leave the web page

The article argues that the successful brands are not worrying about “above the fold”, which is fine and dandy. However, those who are just getting started online, working from home (basically, those who are making less than 7 figures per month) need to worry about the “above the fold.” For them, every visitor counts.

I hope you get the point…

Although, there is a good suggestion that you can remember and apply the next time you create squeeze pages (landing pages).

And that is:

“Have a small amount of content just visible, poking up above the fold to encourage scrolling.” (if you have no other choice)

This “small amount of content” can be the opt-in box.

Don’t forget to check out the article, there are 3 good tips at the end of it.

And of course, never underestimate the power of testing. Every case (squeeze page) is unique and can have totally different results.
