Water, food and forestry were among the many energy-related issues addressed at the conference, which explored how new technology and policy are driving big change in the renewables sector. First Year Anniversary of NARENCO Canopy Installation Finds Transit Station Running Clean with Rooftop Solar

With experts from NARENCO on the job, a partnership including UNC-Charlotte and the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) powered up a massive 1000-panel installation in November of 2012. One year later the 250 KW system successfully helps CATS provide five percent of electricity demand at its South Tryon Bus Maintenance Station. When NARENCO put the rooftop array in place, it relied on a design developed by a team of senior engineering students from UNC-Charlotte. So innovative was their work that CATS won a $1.0 million federal grant to launch the project. NARENCO Begins Construction of 6.4 MW DC Solar Farm in Warsaw, North Carolina

National Renewable Energy Corporation (NARENCO), a North Carolina based solar engineering, procurement and construction contractor, has begun construction of one of our state’s newest solar farms. On approximately 30 acres of land traditionally used for agricultural purposes, NARENCO is introducing a new kind of farming to the Warsaw community.

NARENCO will be constructing the 6.4 MW DC solar photovoltaic energy systems over the next three months. NARENCO, along with local and regional subcontractors, will construct solar systems with minimal environmental impact that will generate clean energy for many years to come. The approximately 9,300 MWh per year of electricity to be generated by the systems will be sold to Duke Progress Energy to power hundreds of local homes and businesses. The systems are expected to be supplying power by December 31st of this year.

Currently NARENCO has contracts to design and construct more than 32 MW of additional solar farms in eastern North Carolina by the first quarter of 2014. NARENCO’s commitment to renewable energy solutions is helping to keep our state at the forefront of this important industry.

NARENCO Completes Construction of 4.4 MW Solar Farm in Mount Airy, North Carolina

National Renewable Energy Corporation (NARENCO), a Charlotte based engineering, procurement and construction contractor, recently completed construction of the 4.4 MW Ararat Rock Solar Farm in Mount Airy, North Carolina. O2 Energies, the developer and owner of the new Ararat Rock Solar Farm, chose NARENCO to construct the system on the 25 acre site. "NARENCO is honored to have been selected to work with O2 Energies on the Ararat Rock Solar Farm. We have designed and built the project to take advantage of the natural contours of the site, creating a stunning project for O2 Energies, Mt. Airy and Surry County", said Dennis Richter, president of NARENCO.

The approximately 6,288 MWh per year of electricity generated by the array is being sold to Duke Energy to power hundreds of local homes and businesses. The new array is located next to the Ararat Rock Products quarry which has been in operation more than 60 years. Due to proximity, much of the power produced by the array will be consumed by the rock quarry during operating hours. Local sheep are maintaining the grass inside the fenced area while family farmers will work the land around the perimeter of the solar farm.

The Ararat Rock Solar Farm was built with more than 18,000 REC modules which are manufactured with US produced silicon. In addition, Advanced Energy (AE) supplied the inverters that were manufactured in Colorado. Surrey Bank & Trust, a local institution, provided debt financing and insurance, making it one of the first local banks to participate in financing a large solar farm in their own community. O2 Energies worked with Surry Community College to provide workforce training for contractors and NARENCO utilized local labor and vendors during the 16 weeks of construction of the Ararat Rock Solar Farm.

Newest Rooftop Solar Energy System in Gaston County To Be Dedicated February 21, 2012

National Renewable Energy Corporation (NARENCO) has completed a 740 kilowatt DC solar photovoltaic energy system on the roof of the York Chester Plaza building in Gastonia, North Carolina. To showcase the newest and one of the largest PV systems in Gaston County, NARENCO will host a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony on Tuesday, February 21st at 2 p.m.

This renewable energy system, which was energized on December 28th, 2011, utilizes more than 3,000 solar panels and is expected to generate approximately 955,657 kilowatt hours of energy per year. The energy produced will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 720 tons annually which is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions from the use of 80,724 gallons of gasoline.

NARENCO will lease the roof space through a long-term lease agreement with Gaston County. Under the terms of the lease agreement, NARENO will own and operate the array and sell the power generated from the system to Duke Energy while the Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SREC) will be sold to Energy United of Statesville, North Carolina. No County capital investment was required for this project.

NARENCO Constructing Rooftop Solar Array On Gaston County Public Building

National Renewable Energy Corporation (NARENCO) has begun installation of a 740 kilowatt DC solar PV (photovoltaic) energy system on the roof of the York-Chester Plaza building in Gastonia, North Carolina. This renewable energy system will utilize more than 3,000 solar panels to produce approximately 955,657 kilowatt hours of energy per year.

Gaston County is leasing the rooftop space to NARENCO who is overseeing all elements of the system's construction from initial design to final commissioning. NARENCO will then sell the power generated from the system to Duke Energy while the Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SREC) will be sold to Energy United of Statesville, North Carolina. At the end of the roof lease term, Gaston County has the option to purchase the system from NARENCO. Lease financing for the system is being provided by Wells Fargo Equipment Finance.

NARENCO plans to complete the rooftop solar PV system by the end of December 2011.

NARENCO Begins Solar PV Installation on North Carolina's First School to Strive for Platinum LEED Certification

National Renewable Energy Corporation (NARENCO) has begun installation of a 135 kilowatt DC solar PV (photovoltaic) energy system on the roof of the new Newton-Conover Middle School in Conover, North Carolina. This solar system will contribute to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points required for this national designation of which Newton-Conover Middle School hopes to achieve the highest level of platinum. This platinum LEED designation would be the first for a public school in North Carolina.

In addition to the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the solar system, NARENCO will assist the school with connection to the local utility system to supplement the building's energy usage. Along with generating their own power with the solar PV system, the design and construction of the middle school will also serve to significantly reduce costs over the life of the building.

Combined with the other elements of the school's construction that are environmentally-friendly this solar energy system will also provide a wonderful lesson to the students in science and ecology. With a monitoring system supplied by NARENCO, the school will be able to educate the students on the current energy production and the environment benefits resulting from the system during the day.

NARENCO should complete the rooftop solar PV system in the fall of 2011. Newton-Conover Middle School plans to welcome its first students in August of 2012.

NARENCO's Solar Installers Earn Industry's Most Prestigious Certification

Two of NARENCO's key personnel, Keith Davis and Mark Caddell, have earned the industry's leading recognition of expertise as a certified installer of solar electric systems (aka "photovoltaic" or "PV" systems) from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).

NABCEP is the most respected and well-established national certification organization for renewable energy professionals. Designation as a NABCEP Certified PV Installer is widely recognized to be the most important and meaningful certification of its kind in the renewable energy industry.

"Receiving NABCEP's Certified Installer status is personally very satisfying," said Davis. "More importantly, it means NARENCO can offer our customers the added confidence of knowing their installations will be performed to the highest standards in the industry."

To earn their NABCEP certification, Davis and Caddell were required to demonstrate their competence as solar PV installers by passing a rigorous exam that covers the multi-craft aspects of being a professional PV installer. They needed to demonstrate knowledge on subjects as diverse as system design, electrical and job safety, the National Electric Code, roofing and construction techniques, system commissioning, and troubleshooting.

In addition to passing the exam, all certified NABCEP installers are required to show that they have real-world experience as a senior person on the installations crew as well as a minimum number of hours of advanced training.

"One thing you can be assured of with NABCEP Certified Installers is that your job won't be their first," said Erza Auerbach, executive director of NABCEP. "Anyone who makes the considerable effort required to earn NABCEP Installer Certification has been required to document their experience and education as part of the eligibility process. They have also made a very real commitment to upholding high standards of ethical and professional practice. We are delighted to welcome Keith Davis and Mark Caddell of NARENCO to the ranks of the industry's leading solar installers."
