Jamboree On The Air (JOTA)

The 51st Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) is an annual event in which Boy and Girl Scouts and leaders from all over the world speak to each other by means of Amateur (ham) Radio. Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared via radio waves. With no restrictions on age and at little or no expense, JOTA allows Scouts to contact each other by local ham radio groups. This year the event will take place on Saturday October 18. Two local radio groups are supporting the event. The W1AQ radio group will be operating at their club house at 54 Kelley Avenue, East Providence, RI between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM. and a radio group formed by the ham radio operators of Shawomet district will be operating at Camp Aquapaug from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Great way to spend Father’s Day!

This weekend come join us at Cub World for a fantastic weekend. Come do BB, Archery, Boating, Crafts and lots of Scout Sprit!!! If you are not signed up, no problem. The registration system will be open until Midnight on Wednesday June 11, 2008, but if you miss that it is not a problem. This is a one time opportunity for you to show up at camp, and not have to worry about the late fee, yes you can just walk-in. The fee for this weekend is $90, and a list of what to bring can be found on our web site. Check-In begins at 8:30 AM and the program begins at 10:00 AM. What a great way to spend Father’s Day Weekend!

Criminal Background Checks

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS

As dedicated Scouting volunteers, we know you understand the importance of keeping our youth safe in the Scouting program. We accomplish this in many ways, once of which has been to conduct criminal background checks on all new volunteers since April 2003. However, volunteers who have been continually registered in the program since before April 2003 have not had a criminal background check. In the near future, the National Council will be communicating with those volunteers on this issue.

Volunteers who have not had a background check will receive a letter from our Chief Scout Executive, Bob Mazzuca, explaining the need for criminal background checks and our continued youth protection efforts. The letter will explain the need for consent to conduct a criminal background check and direct volunteers to a new Web site (www.bsacbc.org) where volunteers can authorize and provide information needed to conduct a CBC.

Project COPE at Yawgoog – Spring 2008
The Narragansett Council is pleased to announce that it will be offering Project COPE, Low COPE Saturdays at Yawgoog this spring in March and April. Project COPE is a customized outdoor program for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. It is composed of group initiative games, trust activities, and challenging low ropes course elements. Some activities involve a group challenge while others develop individual skills and agility. Project COPE is a noncompetitive activity that emphasizes the importance of teamwork. It also provides opportunities for every participant to succeed as an individual and as member of a group without creating a win-lose dynamic. Cub Scouts may participate in Low COPE only. You may attend COPE if you are camping at Yawgoog, or if you just want to come down for the day. If this program doesn’t fit your needs exactly please contact us and we would be glad to discuss developing a custom COPE experience for your unit. Spring Popcorn Sale:
It is again time to encourage Units to consider a Spring Popcorn Fundraiser to help Scouts Earn Their Way to Camp. Please forward the attached flyer to the units in your district and begin to outline the importance of giving every Scout a chance to earn $$ for camp.

The Narragansett Council Sleepover Nights are scheduled for May 24th and June 7th. Your sleepover package will include participation for all Scouts in the on-field Youth Clinic before the game, autograph session with the players, a general admission ticket to the game, a meal voucher for a hot dog, chips and soda, an event patch, a movie on the big screen after the game and continental breakfast in the morning…all of this for only $25 per person. This event is open to all Scouts and their families.

Introduction to Backpacking for Adults:
This is an introduction to backpacking to adult leaders who have never backpacked. It is our hope that leaders who participate in this program will bring these skills back to their units so that more Scouts can experience the "big woods". Leaders with backpacking experience wishing to expand their horizons should contact the High Adventure Committee regarding a custom tailored program to fit the needs of their unit.

This trek starts on the Kancamaugus Highway in Lincoln, NH. We follow the old logging railway past Franconia Brook, and on to Thirteen Falls Camp. Thirteen Falls is operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club as a back country camping area. Leaders will learn proper packing techniques, Leave No Trace camping principles, cooking on lightweight stoves, water purification techniques, the importance of keeping a clean camp in bear country, and many other skills. Most importantly, they will learn to work as a team. Topics also covered: trek planning and logistics, permitting, basic land navigation, and menu planning.

This trek is limited to 10 people, including staff, due to National Forest regulations governing travel in federally designated Wilderness Areas.
COMMITMENT - The commitment for this trip includes:
à One full Saturday to Sunday overnight camping experience at Buck Hill
à A Saturday to Sunday experience in the White Mountain National Forest
PAYMENTS - Payment due with registration
Registration deadline: September 7, 2008
Fee includes: Meals for both meetings and camping fees.
Transportation to and from the White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire is not included.
Cost: $60.00 per person

Cub Scout Activities
The Gift of Camp:
What a great gift to give for any occasion. Grandma, Grandpa, Aunts, and Uncles all can give the "Gift of Camp". This is a promise of a great outdoor adventure for this coming camping Season. We have two great ways to purchase the "Gift of Camp". You can do so online using our online registration system, or you can visit either of our two conveniently located Scout Shops. Once you purchase, you will receive a presentation card that is the actual gift for the Scout, you will also have a receipt from our online registration system which is what you will use when you redeem the gift. Once the Scout has decided what adventures he will take this summer, and the family registers him for that adventure, they will click the mail in payment option. Then all they need to do is bring in both receipts to either Scout Shop, or mail directly to the council office and the Scout is all set for camp.

Buttonwood Park Zoo Camp-In: REGISTRATION CLOSES 4/2/08
Experience one of the “finest small zoos in the United States” in a new light…flashlight! Join New Bedford’s Buttonwood Park Zoo for a one-of-a-kind Critter Camp-In and wake up in a zoo. Adventure Weekends:
Cub Scout Adventure Weekends are a great family activity. All Cub Adventure Weekends are designed to be attended by a Scout and their adult partner in a one night overnight experience. Every weekend is designed around a fun theme. This year there will be two of the perennial favorites: the "Somethin's Fishy" weekend with lots of fishing and fun for all; and, three of the "Mom and Me" weekends. These "Mom and Me" weekends are designed to be a great bonding opportunity for Scouts and their mothers, we will also be adding another "Dad and Lad", so we will now offer two of these great weekends at Cub World

Cub Scout Resident Camp:
What is Resident Camp?
Cub World is a three-day-two night, resident camp experience for Cub Scouts. Participants stay in one of three theme areas where our staff ensures that the theme is constant from the moment you arrive, until you head home. As a resident camp and unlike other Cub Scout camping, our ratio is one adult for every four boys, either as a Den or a Pack. Our paid staff is trained to put on the entire program to make each Cub Scout's and every adult's stay as memorable and care-free as possible. All meals, programs, materials, services and a group photo are included in your stay. A place of imagination, it is a Cub Scout vacation that will forge memories to last a lifetime.

Theme Areas
Cub World has an amusement park feel, designed specifically for "Cub-Sized" abilities and interests. Your stay will be in one of our three Theme Areas - Pease High Seas Adventure, Bridgeton Castle, and Wild West Adventure. All three theme areas include bunk houses and modern restroom facilities. Even if you've stayed in the facility during the off-season, you haven't begun to know what Cub World is like in the summer! During your stay our certified, enthusiastic staff will keep you busy from morning 'til night. Cubs and leaders alike will be part of all the fun.

This is a 3 day, 2 night resident (sleep over) camp, and we have shifted the program so that we have sessions that are on the Weekend! This can be done as a Pack, or as a Parent and Scout Team. Each theme area in camp follows a schedule that allows everyone to get to every program area in camp.

This is also a 3 day, 2 night resident (sleep over) camp, but this is for a Scout only. Supervision for these Scouts will be provided by the Cub World Staff. This gives the Scout who might not be able to attend camp with a parent or their pack the opportunity to enjoy Cub World, also a great opportunity for a Scout who attends Cub World and loves it to come stay another session. Camp Fees:
Fees for both the traditional and the family camping weeks will include a "Good Scout Discount" of $25 for payments made in full by July 1, 2008. A $50 per person deposit for traditional weeks and a $100 per family deposit for Family Camp are due within two weeks of registration, non-refundable after June 1st. (The deposit however, is transferable after June 1st.)

Boy Scout Activities
Climbing Merit Badge:
Experience the thrill of climbing in a safe and supervised environment with lots of room for learning and having fun. The day begins with in depth instruction on knot tying, climbing and rappelling technique. After practicing with an instructor, and earning the approval to climb independently, each Scout will get to test his new skills on over 50 climbing routes. During the course of the day, each Scout will have the opportunity to complete all the requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge.
ELEGIBILITY: Any registered Boy Scout
PREREQUISITE: Scoutmaster note that Climbing MB requirements #1 and #2
(First Aid requirements) have been completed prior to this class.

Come participate in our first Council-wide Venturing activity. We also welcome Crews from neighboring councils to join in the activities. Harlem Globetrotters: Registration closes 3/19/08, get your seats now!!!!
Come catch a great night of family entertainment. The Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Ryan Center on March 22, 2008. The Narragansett Council and the Ryan Center have a great package for this game. Your package will include participation for all youth in the Globetrotter’s University, a meal voucher (Three choices Hot Dog or Hamburger, chips and a soda or Pizza and a soda), a patch, and your attendance at the game. All of this for a great price of $25 per person. This event is open to all Scouts and their families. This event does have a deadline of March 19, 2008. Please wear your Scout uniform!

Introduction to Backpacking for Adults: NEW!!!
This is an introduction to backpacking to adult leaders who have never backpacked. It is our hope that leaders who participate in this program will bring these skills back to their units so that more Scouts can experience the ?big woods?. Leaders with backpacking experience wishing to expand their horizons should contact the High Adventure Committee regarding a custom tailored program to fit the needs of their unit.

This trek starts on the Kancamaugus Highway in Lincoln, NH. We follow the old logging railway past Franconia Brook, and on to Thirteen Falls Camp. Thirteen Falls is operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club as a back country camping area. Leaders will learn proper packing techniques, Leave No Trace camping principles, cooking on lightweight stoves, water purification techniques, the importance of keeping a clean camp in bear country, and many other skills. Most importantly, they will learn to work as a team. Topics also covered: trek planning and logistics, permitting, basic land navigation, and menu planning.

This trek is limited to 10 people, including staff, due to National Forest regulations governing travel in federally designated Wilderness Areas.
COMMITMENT - The commitment for this trip includes:
à One full Saturday to Sunday overnight camping experience at Buck Hill
à A Saturday to Sunday experience in the White Mountain National Forest
PAYMENTS - Payment due with registration

Fee includes: Meals for both meetings and camping fees.
Transportation to and from the White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire is not included.

The Gift of Camp:
What a great gift to give for any occasion. Grandma, Grandpa, Aunts, and Uncles all can give the "Gift of Camp". This is a promise of a great outdoor adventure for this coming camping Season. We have two great ways to purchase the "Gift of Camp". You can do so online using our online registration system, or you can visit either of our two conveniently located Scout Shops. Once you purchase, you will receive a presentation card that is the actual gift for the Scout, you will also have a receipt from our online registration system which is what you will use when you redeem the gift. Once the Scout has decided what adventures he will take this summer, and the family registers him for that adventure, they will click the mail in payment option. Then all they need to do is bring in both receipts to either Scout Shop, or mail directly to the council office and the Scout is all set for camp.

Buttonwood Park Zoo Camp-In:
Experience one of the “finest small zoos in the United States” in a new light…flashlight! Join New Bedford’s Buttonwood Park Zoo for a one-of-a-kind Critter Camp-In and wake up in a zoo. Cub Scout Adventure Weekends are a great family activity. All Cub Adventure Weekends are designed to be attended by a Scout and their adult partner in a one night overnight experience. Every weekend is designed around a fun theme. This year there will be two of the perennial favorites: the "Somethin's Fishy" weekend with lots of fishing and fun for all; and, three of the "Mom and Me" weekends. Cub Scout Resident Camp:
What is Resident Camp?
Cub World is a three-day-two night, resident camp experience for Cub Scouts. Participants stay in one of three theme areas where our staff ensures that the theme is constant from the moment you arrive, until you head home. As a resident camp and unlike other Cub Scout camping, our ratio is one adult for every four boys, either as a Den or a Pack. Our paid staff is trained to put on the entire program to make each Cub Scout's and every adult's stay as memorable and care-free as possible. All meals, programs, materials, services and a group photo are included in your stay. A place of imagination, it is a Cub Scout vacation that will forge memories to last a lifetime.

Theme Areas
Cub World has an amusement park feel, designed specifically for "Cub-Sized" abilities and interests. Your stay will be in one of our three Theme Areas - Pease High Seas Adventure, Bridgeton Castle, and Wild West Adventure. All three theme areas include bunk houses and modern restroom facilities. Even if you've stayed in the facility during the off-season, you haven't begun to know what Cub World is like in the summer! During your stay our certified, enthusiastic staff will keep you busy from morning 'til night. Cubs and leaders alike will be part of all the fun.

This is a 3 day, 2 night resident (sleep over) camp, and we have shifted the program so that we have sessions that are on the Weekend! This can be done as a Pack, or as a Parent and Scout Team. Each theme area in camp follows a schedule that allows everyone to get to every program area in camp.

Camp Fees:
Fees for both the traditional and the family camping weeks will include a "Good Scout Discount" of $25 for payments made in full by July 1, 2008. A $50 per person deposit for traditional weeks and a $100 per family deposit for Family Camp are due within two weeks of registration, non-refundable after June 1st. (The deposit however, is transferable after June 1st.)

Boy Scout Activities
Climbing Merit Badge: NEW!!!
Experience the thrill of climbing in a safe and supervised environment with lots of room for learning and having fun. The day begins with in depth instruction on knot tying, climbing and rappelling technique. After practicing with an instructor, and earning the approval to climb independently, each Scout will get to test his new skills on over 50 climbing routes. During the course of the day, each Scout will have the opportunity to complete all the requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge.
ELEGIBILITY: Any registered Boy Scout
PREREQUISITE: Scoutmaster note that Climbing MB requirements #1 and #2
(First Aid requirements) have been completed prior to this class.

High COPE at Yawgoog – Spring 2008
The Narragansett Council is pleased to announce that it will be offering High COPE, Low COPE and Climbing Merit Badge Saturdays at Yawgoog this spring in March and April. These programs are open to any registered Boy Scout. Cub Scouts may participate in Low COPE only. You may attend COPE if you are camping at Yawgoog, or if you just want to come down for the day. As we know, boys join Scouting to go camping and spend time in the outdoors. To help support units deliver the outdoor program the Narragansett Council owns and operates eight fine camping facilities. They are:

Camp Aquapaug - South Kingstown, RI

Buck Hill Reservation - Pascoag, RI

Camp Buxton - Rehoboth, MA

Camp Cachalot - Plymouth, MA

Camp Champlin - Cranston, RI

Cub World - Pascoag, RI

Sandsland - Block Island, RI

Camp Yawgoog - Rockville, RI

Each camp has a variety of facilities and Campmaster Corps that will assist you in providing a great outdoor program for your boys.

This summer we are pleased to announce that Buck Hill Reservation will be open to units in July in August for the first time in many years. We are also pleased to announce that we have added five great new campsites along the shore of the pond. In the future we also hope to renovate the old commissary building to accommodate co-ed groups for overnight camping.

Right now you can reserve cabins and tent sites at our eight great camps through August 31, 2008.

We will open reservations for September 2008 through August 2009 according to the following schedule:

100th Anniversary of Scouting - Unit History Project

The year 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of Scouting – a cause for great celebration! While this celebration is really about looking forward to next 100 years, it also provides us with a great opportunity to take a look back and capture some of Scouting’s rich history in our area.

While we have a written history of the council, to tell the whole story of Scouting we must tell the stories of the individual Troops (and from the 1930’s Packs) that make up the council. Indeed, prior to the formation of the first Boy Scout Councils that have served our area there were many individual Troops in existence. In Rhode Island most of these came under the auspices of the Rhode Island Boy Scouts which was incorporated in 1910 – the Narragansett Council came into being in 1917. There were also several Troops operating in the Southcoast of Massachusetts prior to the formation of the councils in Fall River and New Bedford.

Thus, in celebration of Scouting’s 100th anniversary, we will publish a history of the Troops that made up the Narragansett Council (and its predecessors) over the years. The “Over the Hill Gang”, a group of Senior Scouters are anything but over the hill, has agreed to adopt this project and work with units who wish to participate.

If you want your Troop or Pack’s story to be part of this history here’s how to get started:

Discuss the project at your next committee meeting and vote to go forward:
Boy Scout Troops should identify a Scout (Troop Historian) and an adult “advisor” to work with a member of the “Over the Hill Gang.”
Cub Scout Packs should identify an adult committee person.

Harlem Globetrotters: Great event for the whole family!!!!
Come catch a great night of family entertainment. The Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Ryan Center on March 22, 2008. The Narragansett Council and the Ryan Center have a great package for this game. Your package will include participation for all youth in the Globetrotter’s University, a meal voucher (Three choices Hot Dog or Hamburger, chips and a soda or Pizza and a soda), a patch, and your attendance at the game. The Narragansett Council Sleepover Nights are scheduled for May 24th and June 7th. Your sleepover package will include participation for all Scouts in the on-field Youth Clinic before the game, autograph session with the players, a general admission ticket to the game, a meal voucher for a hot dog, chips and soda, an event patch, a movie on the big screen after the game and continental breakfast in the morning…all of this for only $25 per person. Cub Scout Activities
The Gift of Camp:
What a great gift to give for any occasion. Grandma, Grandpa, Aunts, and Uncles all can give the "Gift of Camp". This is a promise of a great outdoor adventure for this coming camping Season. We have two great ways to purchase the "Gift of Camp". You can do so online using our online registration system, or you can visit either of our two conveniently located Scout Shops. Once you purchase, you will receive a presentation card that is the actual gift for the Scout, you will also have a receipt from our online registration system which is what you will use when you redeem the gift. Once the Scout has decided what adventures he will take this summer, and the family registers him for that adventure, they will click the mail in payment option. Then all they need to do is bring in both receipts to either Scout Shop, or mail directly to the council office and the Scout is all set for camp.

Buttonwood Park Zoo Camp-In:
Experience one of the “finest small zoos in the United States” in a new light…flashlight! Join New Bedford’s Buttonwood Park Zoo for a one-of-a-kind Critter Camp-In and wake up in a zoo. There’s no need to worry about feeding your hungry scouts before arriving; each participant will receive dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast. Critter Camp-Ins include an evening hike through the zoo, hands-on activates, and an exciting and interactive learning experience! Cub Scout Adventure Weekends are a great family activity. All Cub Adventure Weekends are designed to be attended by a Scout and their adult partner in a one night overnight experience. Every weekend is designed around a fun theme. This year there will be two of the perennial favorites: the "Somethin's Fishy" weekend with lots of fishing and fun for all; and, three of the "Mom and Me" weekends. These "Mom and Me" weekends are designed to be a great bonding opportunity for Scouts and their mothers, we will also be adding another "Dad and Lad", so we will now offer two of these great weekends at Cub World

Cub Scout Resident Camp: NEW!!
What is Resident Camp?
Cub World is a three-day-two night, resident camp experience for Cub Scouts. Participants stay in one of three theme areas where our staff ensures that the theme is constant from the moment you arrive, until you head home. As a resident camp and unlike other Cub Scout camping, our ratio is one adult for every four boys, either as a Den or a Pack. Our paid staff is trained to put on the entire program to make each Cub Scout's and every adult's stay as memorable and care-free as possible. All meals, programs, materials, services and a group photo are included in your stay. A place of imagination, it is a Cub Scout vacation that will forge memories to last a lifetime.

Theme Areas
Cub World has an amusement park feel, designed specifically for "Cub-Sized" abilities and interests. Your stay will be in one of our three Theme Areas - Pease High Seas Adventure, Bridgeton Castle, and Wild West Adventure. All three theme areas include bunk houses and modern restroom facilities. Even if you've stayed in the facility during the off-season, you haven't begun to know what Cub World is like in the summer! During your stay our certified, enthusiastic staff will keep you busy from morning 'til night. Cubs and leaders alike will be part of all the fun.

These programs are open to any registered Boy Scout. Cub Scouts may participate in Low COPE only. You may attend COPE if you are camping at Yawgoog, or if you just want to come down for the day. Winter Sports Safety

There is no time like the present to heighten awareness and accident prevention strategies related to winter sports including sledding, tubing, and skiing.

Beyond camping, a number of cold-weather activities present challenges to the Scout and leader, such as cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and snowshoeing. Essential ingredients for fun include skill training and an awareness of the hazards unique to these activities. Snow conditions, hazardous terrain, special clothing needs, and emergency survival are important issues for a safe and successful experience.
Be sure your winter outdoor activity always follows these guidelines:

1.All winter activities must be supervised by mature and conscientious adults (at least one of whom must be age 21 or older) who understand and knowingly accept responsibility for the well-being and safety of the youth in their care, who are experienced and qualified in the particular skills and equipment involved in the activity, and who are committed to compliance with the seven points of BSA Winter Sports Safety. Direct supervision should be maintained at all times by two or more adults when Scouts are "in the field." The appropriate number of supervisors will increase depending on the number of participants, the type of activity, and environmental conditions.

2.Winter sports activities embody intrinsic hazards that vary from sport to sport. Participants should be aware of the potential hazards of any winter sport before engaging in it. Leaders should emphasize preventing accidents through adherence to safety measures and proper technique.

3.Suitable clothing for the activity and environment should be worn at all times, and equipment should include gloves and helmets when appropriate.

4.Winter sports activities often place greater demands on a participant's cardiopulmonary system, and people with underlying medical conditions (especially if the heart or lungs are involved) should not participate without medical consultation and direction. For participants without underlying medical conditions, the annual health history and physical examination by a licensed health-care practitioner every three years are sufficient. The adult leader should be familiar with the physical circumstances of each youth participant and make appropriate adjustments in the activity or protection as warranted by individual health or physical conditions. Adults participating in strenuous outdoor winter activity should have an annual physical examination. It is recommended that the medical assessment be performed by a licensed health-care practitioner knowledgeable of the sport and the particular physical demands the activity will place on the individual.

5.For winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, etc. that utilize specialized equipment, it is essential that all equipment fit and function properly.

6.When youth are engaging in downhill activities such as sledding or tobogganing, minimize the likelihood of collision with immobile obstacles. Use only designated areas where rocks, tree stumps, and other potential obstacles have been identified and marked, cleared away, shielded, or buffered in some way.

7.All participants should know, understand, and respect the rules and procedures for safe winter activity. The applicable rules should be presented and learned before the outing, and all participants should review them just before the activity begins. When Scouts know and understand the reasons for the rules, they will observe them. When fairly and impartially applied, rules do not interfere with fun. Rules for safety, plus common sense and good judgment, keep the fun from being interrupted by tragedy.

Dear Leader and Parent:

Camping and other outdoor activities are an essential part of Scouting. Indeed, it is impossible to enjoy the full benefits of the Scouting program without attending Cub Scout Day Camp, Cub Resident Camp, Webelos Resident Camp, and Boy Scout Summer Camp!

We feel so strongly about the outdoor program that we have made a commitment that no young person will be denied a camp experience due to financial constraints. To that end, the Narragansett Council has established a Campership Fund to assist our Scouting families.

The Campership Committee will consider camp scholarship applications for Boy Scout Camp at Yawgoog and Cachalot, Webelos Camp at Yawgoog, Cub World, Cub Scout Day Camp and Adventure Weekends. In keeping with the Scouting philosophy, we ask that every effort be made by your Cub Scout or Boy Scout and their unit to provide a portion of the camp fee. In the words of the Scout Law….”A Scout is thrifty….he works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for the future. He carefully uses time and property.”

While funds are limited, I would again stress that we are committed to providing scholarship assistance to ensure that every youth member attend camp. In order to fairly distribute available funds the deadline for campership requests is May 31st. However, if a family situation changes or if a boy decides to attend camp after this deadline, please be assured that we will consider a family’s request. Please be aware that we will contact the Cubmaster or Scoutmaster once the application is received. All requests for aid will be treated in a confidential manner. This year you will be able to apply online at our website: www.narragansettbsa.org. Paper applications are also available and may be mailed to: Narragansett Council, P.O. Box 14777, East Providence, RI 02914-0777.

We sincerely hope to see every Cub Scout, Webelos Scout, and Boy Scout in one of our camping programs this summer.

Harlem Globetrotters: NEW!!!
Come catch a great night of family entertainment. The Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Ryan Center on March 22, 2008. The Narragansett Council and the Ryan Center have a great package for this game. Your package will include participation for all youth in the Globetrotter’s University, a meal voucher (Three choices Hot Dog or Hamburger, chips and a soda or Pizza and a soda), a patch, and your attendance at the game. What a great gift to give for any occasion. Grandma, Grandpa, Aunts, and Uncles all can give the "Gift of Camp". This is a promise of a great outdoor adventure for this coming camping Season. We have two great ways to purchase the "Gift of Camp". You can do so online using our online registration system, or you can visit either of our two conveniently located Scout Shops. Once you purchase, you will receive a presentation card that is the actual gift for the Scout, you will also have a receipt from our online registration system which is what you will use when you redeem the gift. Once the Scout has decided what adventures he will take this summer, and the family registers him for that adventure, they will click the mail in payment option. Search for fingerprints, decode ink stains and analyze a mysterious substance left behind by the culprit to piece together "whodunnit." Just a Little Post-Holiday Get-Together…

Come join us on Saturday, January 19th, 2008, from 11:00am through 3:00pm at Heritage State Park in Fall River for our Winter Gathering! This year's event is free, and promises to be both friendly and informative. This year, we'll be putting a little of the focus on one of the "predecessor" camps and looking back on the history of the former Camp Noquochoke on the shore of the Westport River, to share what we know and hopefully get some of the gaps in our knowledge filled.

Some of the things we have planned for the day include:

Displays of Camp Noquochoke, Camp Cachalot and related Scouting artifacts.
Our collection of signs from Camp Noquochoke, including the recently-recovered main camp sign (more on this below)
Slide and movie presentations of Camp-related photos, dating back to the 1920s
A brief update on the Association's goings-on
A presentation on Cachalot's ecology by alumnus Brian Bastarache
A presentation on Noquochoke's history by alumnus Mike Vieira
Snacks and drinks will be on-hand throughout the day.

After a successful first half comes to an end, the FIRST PLACE Providence Bruins look to continue the surge to the Calder Cup Playoffs in February and March and you can catch yourself in the action and there is no better way to take a breather from the cold winter campouts then a night with the Providence Bruins! Even if your pack/troop has already attended a scout night this is a great second chance for those scouts who did not get to participate in November, December, and January and a great opportunity for any scout who wishes to go again!

As an Eagle Scout I know how hard it is from year to year and month to month to come up with different events for the scouts to take part in. The Providence Bruins Scout Weekends is a great alternative for scouts and their parents and it is really a great way to get the whole family involved and can also be used as a recruitment method for future scouts. Our scout weekends are a big hit with families because of the low price of just $12 per ticket, the whole family can participate, and it is only one night out of some family’s busy schedule. It is also a big hit with the scouts because each scout receives a FREE HAT and a FREE SCOUT PATCH that was designed last year by a scout!

Boston Museum of Science Camp-In: SOLD OUT!
A Camp-In at the Museum of Science is a special overnight program that inspires children to discover science in an entertaining, educational, and interactive way. A typical Camp-In includes a variety of hands-on science activities, science demonstrations, an Omni show, a late night program, and time to explore the Museum with chaperones. Camp-In Instructors facilitate fun science activities that enhance Museum exhibits.

Providence Children’s Museum “Whodunnit” Overnighter:
Calling all would-be detectives and super sleuths! Cub Scouts are needed at Providence Children's Museum to solve a complex and intriguing mystery. Search for fingerprints, decode ink stains and analyze a mysterious substance left behind by the culprit to piece together "whodunnit." Registration includes a special "Providence Children's Museum Overnight" cloth patch, pizza dinner, breakfast, coffee for adults, admission to the Museum for the night and a pass for each Scout for a future visit to the Museum.

Buttonwood Park Zoo Camp-In:
Experience one of the “finest small zoos in the United States” in a new light…flashlight! Join New Bedford’s Buttonwood Park Zoo for a one-of-a-kind Critter Camp-In and wake up in a zoo. There’s no need to worry about feeding your hungry scouts before arriving; each participant will receive dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast. Critter Camp-Ins include an evening hike through the zoo, hands-on activates, and an exciting and interactive learning experience! All scouts will receive a souvenir patch that will entitle them to free admission to the zoo throughout the year. Mystic Aquarium Overnighter: SOLD OUT!
Ever wonder what the aquarium animals do at night? Bring your sleeping bag, pillow and a flashlight for an overnight adventure in an underwater world to find out. We’ll play games, tour the exhibits, enjoy snacks and have the Aquarium all to ourselves! Then pick a place to sleep next to the graceful rays, schooling fish or circling sharks. This program is open to Scouts and siblings of Scout age (7-10 years old). This includes a snack and breakfast.

2008 Netop District Merit Badge College:
This event is for Scouts who want to explore Merit Badges that are beyond the normal Scouting experience. Maybe it is a career interest, or maybe it is a lifelong hobby that moves you. Or perhaps you need a helping hand with that last Eagle merit badge requirement. Classes in forty four Merit Badges are being offered in a one day event on the campus of Rhode Island College. Architecture, Journalism, Photography, and Medicine are just a few of what is being offered. Most classes feature instructors that are expert in their fields who enjoy passing on their passion for their trade. Merit Badges taught by these experts have made the Netop District MBC a growing anticipated event in the area. Cost includes lunch, patch, and an awesome facility.

The Narragansett Council is pleased to announce that it will be offering High COPE, Low COPE and Climbing Merit Badge Saturdays at Yawgoog this Spring in March and April.

These programs are open to any registered Boy Scout. Cub Scouts may participate in Low COPE only. You may attend COPE if you are camping at Yawgoog, or if you just want to come down for the day.

This game is a great way to Kick-Off the Holiday break. Join us for this showdown between the Big East and ACC. This will be a televised game and groups of 10 or more Scouts will be able to sit in the Student Section on the floor of the Dunk (under the baskets), and will get their Pack, Troop or Crew recognized during the game. Scouts and Leaders should wear their uniforms and everyone will receive a new redesigned patch. Tickets and Patches will be available at Will Call day of the Game.

The Gift of Camp:
What a great gift to give for any occasion. Grandma, Grandpa, Aunts, and Uncles all can give the "Gift of Camp". This is a promise of a great outdoor adventure for this coming camping Season. We have two great ways to purchase the "Gift of Camp". You can do so online using our online registration system, or you can visit either of our two conveniently located Scout Shops. Once you purchase, you will receive a presentation card that is the actual gift for the Scout, you will also have a receipt from our online registration system which is what you will use when you redeem the gift. Once the Scout has decided what adventures he will take this summer, and the family registers him for that adventure, they will click the mail in payment option. Then all they need to do is bring in both receipts to either Scout Shop, or mail directly to the council office and the Scout is all set for camp.

Providence Children’s Museum presents the Cub Scout Science Belt Loop in Move-It After-Hours Adventure: SOLD OUT!!!
This event is new for the 2007 Scouting year. The program takes place after the museum closes to the general public, so you have the place to yourself while you work on your Science Belt Loop. You will earn the Belt Loop by attending 4 different hands-on activities. You will also be provided a snack and a pass for each Scout to attend the Museum on another occasion.
