Puji syukur kehadirat Allah SWT yang telah memberikan Rahmat dan Karunia -Nya sehingga penyusunan karya tulis ilmiah yang berjudul ”BERKARYA DAN MENGHASILKAN UANG DENGAN BERBEKAL APLIKASI PENGOLAH GRAFIS” dapat selesai tepat pada waktunya.

Dalam Karya Ilmiah ini penulis membahas tentang sebuah peluang yang menggabungkan kreatifitas, seni dan juga teknologi untuk membuat suatu keuntungan bagi kita yaitu dengan menggunakan Aplikasi Pengolah Grafis.

Penulis juga mengucapkan terimakasih kepada dosen pembimbing dan pihak-pihak yang telah membantu dalam menyelesaikan makalah ini. Semoga makalah ini dapat bermanfaat bagi para pembaca. BAB I

PENDAHULUAN

A. Abstrak

Dijaman saat ini yang modern dan serba teknlogi berbagai cara dilakukan untuk mendapatkan uang. Namun jika mencari pekerjaan di dunia nyata itu sulit, sekarang sedang marak-maraknya mencari uang melalui dunia maya atau internet dengan bisnis online. Tapi tahukah anda bahwa ada satu lagi peluang bisnis kyang sebenarnya sangat berpeluang untuk menghasilkan keuntungan ?.

Design Grafis contohnya, saat ini design grafis sangat dibutuhkan dalam masyarakat, dan ini dapat menjadi peluang yang sangat menguntungkan. Aplikasi Design Grafis adalah aplikasi yang menggabungkan unsur seni, kreativitas dan teknologi untuk membuat sebuah seni grafis yang berbeda. Design Grafis ini banyak digunakan untuk mencurahkan kreatifitas dan ide pikiran kita ataupun mengedit foto yang kita inginkan menjadi lebih menarik dan kreatif.

Lalu bagaimana caranya untuk menghasilkan untung ? Disini untung kita dapat perhitungkan dari ide dan sisi kreatifitas kita. Di bagian pembahasan nanti kita akan membahas desain seperti apa yang dapat membuat keuntungan untukmu tanpa harus mengeluarkan uang banyak dalam memulai bisnis ini. Cukup berbekal ide, kreatifitas, ketekunan, keahlian, lapto/ komputer/ tab, handphone, dan konesi internet maka anda dapat menjadi seorang seniman yang menguntungkan bagi orang lain dan diri anda sendiri.

B. Tujuan dan Manfaat Penulisan

Adapun Tujuan Penulisan ini adalah sebagai berikut :

1. Untuk memberikan gambaran bagi para pembaca khususnya mahasiswa yang ingin berkarya seni dan hobi dalam desain grafis bahwa ada peluang bisnis di bidang ini.

2. Meberikan motivasi serta menyalurkan bakat dan keahlian.

3. Mengenalkan aplikasi pengolah grafis.

C. Metode Penulisan

Dalam menulisa karya ilmiah ini penulis memberikan tulisannya dan memperoleh data-data adalah menggunakan beberapa metode sebagi berikut :

1. Studi Online : Penulis memperoleh data-data dari online atau dari internet yang mana membuat beragam data yang berkaitan dengan judul karya tulis ilmiah tersebut.

2. Studi Praktek : Penulis mempraktekan dan juga menggunakan aplikasi yang dijelaskan dalam karya ilmiah ini.

BAB II

PEMBAHASAN

Ada lebih dari satu aplikasi pengolah grafis yang ada di dunia. Contohnya : Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Paint tool SAI, dll. Namun dalam pembahasan karya ilmiah ini penulis memilih salah satu dari aplikasi diatas yaitu Adobe Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop adalah salah satu aplikasi perangkat lunak editor gambar buatan Adobe Systems yang dikhususkan untuk pengeditan foto/gambar dan pembuatan efek, atau biasa disebut layer style. Perangkat lunak ini banyak digunakan oleh fotografer digital dan perusahaan iklan, Photoshop Selain memiliki fitur yang mudah untuk di pahami, photoshop juga memiliki beberapa unggulan fitur yang mampu bekerja maximal, hingga mensuport beberapa file, sehingga bagi kamu seorang desain grafis, ini merupakan salah satu syarat jika kamu pengen masuk ke dunia desain grafis, photoshop dengan segala fasilitasnya.

Photoshop mengkhususkan dirinya sebagai perangkat lunak untuk mengedit gambar dalam format BITMAP (Lihat tulisan mengenai BITMAP VS VECTOR). Oleh karena itu Photoshop seringkali digunakan oleh para fotografer karena foto adalah salah satu gambar dengan format BITMAP. Saat ini Photoshop merupakan perangkat lunak terbaik di kelasnya. ‘Hampir’ tidak ada tandingannya.

Lalu bagaimana dengan peluang bisnisnya ? Sangat gampang. Munculkan Ide kreatifmu dalam mengolah gambar, Kreasikan lalu buatlah hasilnya semenarik mungkin, anda bisa menggabungkan beberapa foto menjadi satu yang biasa disebut Manipulasi Foto. Langkah berikutnya adalah meng-upload karya kalian pada web, sosial media, ataupun blog kalian. Atau jika ingin lebih ter-publish dengan cepat, uploadlah ke Deviantart.com / 99Design.com / Sribu.com.

Banyak perusahaan besar yang membutuhkan jasa desain grafis untuk mendesain logo, label, poster, dll. Tergantung pada kebutuhan perusahaan yang membutuhkan jasa desain grafis.

PENUTUP

A. Kesimpulan

Dari pembahasan diatas dapat kita simpulkan bahwa dengan kreatifitas dan teknologi-pun mampu membuat suatu lapangan pekerjaan baru yang dapat membuat kita mendulang kesuksesan tanpa harus banyak bermodal. Dengan mengembangkan bakat yang kita miliki kita dapat menjadi panutan dalam hal mensukseskan diri bagi sekitar kita.

7 Peluang Bisnis Offline Rumahan

Berikut ini adalah beberapa peluang bisnis dengan modal kecil yang sering dikerjakan oleh para pengusaha kecil dan menengah:

A. Bisnis Offline Dari Rumah

Ada banyak sekali peluang bisnis modal kecil yang bisa dikerjakan dari rumah. Kita dapat melakukan semua proses menjalankan bisnis dengan baik tanpa harus menyewa tempat. Walaupun begitu kita harus mempertimbangkan market yang ada di sekitar kita, apakah akan ada orang yang membutuhkan produk yang kita jual di sana? Berikut ini adalah beberapa jenis usaha rumahan dengan modal kecil yang bisa kita kerjakan:

1. Membuka Jasa Menjahit

Banyak orang yang ingin menjahitkan pakaiannya dengan model dan ukuran tertentu, terutama mereka yang memiliki tubuh yang agak gemuk atau terlalu kurus. Nah, mereka ini pasti selalu mencari jasa penjahit pakaian yang bisa membuat pakaian yang sesuai dengan bentuk tubuh mereka. Bisnis ini sangat cocok untuk orang yang memiliki minat pada dunia fashion, tentunya Anda harus memiliki kemampuan dalam menjahit dan mendesain pakaian.

Selain untuk membuat pakaian baru, jasa menjahit sering juga dibutuhkan oleh mereka yang ingin mengecilkan pakaian yang terlalu besar, atau sekedar memasang atribut tertentu di pakaian mereka. Seperti kita ketahui, banyak sekali orang membeli pakaian (baju/ celana) yang modelnya sedang hits, namun saat akan dibeli ternyata ukurannya terlalu besar. Nah, untuk mengecilkan pakaian tersebut, si customer tentu akan mencari jasa penjahit yang bisa mengecilkan pakaian tersebut.

2. Bisnis Kuliner

Kalau Anda memiliki resep makanan yang unik atau bisa membuat snack yang digemari banyak orang, maka Anda harus mempertimbangkan bisnis ini. Usaha ini sangat cocok untuk orang yang menyukai tentang dunia kuliner. Tidak sedikit orang yang berhasil menjalankan bisnis makanan, bahkan bisnisnya semakin berkembang dan membuka cabang di tempat lain.

Perlu diketahui juga bahwa bisnis kuliner adalah salah satu model bisnis yang tidak akan pernah mengalami kemunduran. Mengapa? Karena kuliner atau makanan adalah kebutuhan pokok manusia. Walaupun saat ini telah banyak kita temukan berbagai jenis usaha kuliner, tetap saja akan muncul jenis bisnis kuliner lain dengan tampilan dan kemasan yang berbeda.

Model bisnis ini juga bisa dijalankan dengan modal yang relatif kecil lho. Dan bila Anda tidak punya keahlian dalam dunia kuliner namun sangat ingin memiliki sebuah bisnis makanan, maka Anda bisa mempertimbangkan untuk membeli #bisnis waralaba makanan dengan modal yang kecil, misalnya waralaba makanan camilan. Memulai bisnis jual pulsa saat ini sebenarnya cukup mudah dan murah, hanya dengan modal awal Rp 100.000 – Rp 300.000 kita sudah bisa mulai menjalankan bisnis ini, bisa dikerjakan di mana saja dan siapa saja. Bila kita memiliki kemampuan dalam bidang tertentu, misalnya; keahlian bermain gitar, keahlian membuat website, desain, bahasa Inggris, komputer, dan lain-lain, kita bisa memberikan les private atau kursus di rumah atau bisa juga dilakukan di tempat lain tergantung kondisi yang ada.

Uniknya, sekarang menjalankan bisnis les private atau kursus ini bisa dilakukan secara online via internet. Di Indonesia sendiri saat ini sudah cukup banyak startup bisnis yang memberikan kemudahaan untuk les private/ kursus secara online. Salah satu dari sekian banyak startup tersebut adalah SekolahPintar.com.

Memang bisnis membuka warung/ toko sembako (sembilan bahan pokok) sangat potensial karena pasti akan terus dibutuhkan masyarakat. Namun, bisnis ini sudah cukup banyak yang menjalankannya, karena itu kita sebaiknya melihat tingkat persaingan yang ada, lokasi, dan juga modal yang kita miliki.

Kita juga perlu memperhatikan kelebihan dan kekurangan menjalankan model bisnis ini karena tidak semua orang cocok dalam menjalankan usaha warung sembako. Model bisnis ini membutuhkan perhatian serius, ketelitian, dan membutuhkan keberadaan pemilik usaha terus-menerus, sehingga mau tidak mau Anda harus turun tangan sendiri agar warung sembako bisa berjalan dengan baik.

Peluang usaha yang satu ini sangat cocok untuk mereka yang punya keterampilan dan kreativitas dalam mengolah gambar dan desain. Tentunya kita harus memiliki kemampuan dalam menggunakan salah satu software editing foto, seperti: CorelDraw, Photoshop, dan software lainnya.

Untuk membuka sebuah usaha di bidang jasa design, percetakan digital atau digital printing, Anda tidak harus punya modal yang besar. Koordinator Kopertis Wilayah V Yogyakarta, Bambang Supriyadi mengatakan, pencapaian tersebut membuktikan keberhasilan Amikom dalam meningkatkan kapasitas institusi. Pasalnya dari sekian banyak perguruan tinggi di Yogyakarta yang mengajukan perubahan bentuk, hanya tiga yang disetujui. Di mana satu di antaranya adalah STIMIK Amikom.

“Universitas Amikom sekarang sudah punya 16 prodi (program studi). Sebelumnya hanya lima,” kata Bambang. Menurutnya penambahan 11 prodi baru akan memberikan konsekuensi yang besar. Di mana Universitas Amikom harus mempertahan aktivasinya dengan nilai akreditasi yang baik.

Selain itu, Amikom juga perlu menyiapkan pemantapan sumber daya manusia (SDM) pengajar di 11 prodi baru tersebut. Paling tidak, kata Bambang, Amikom membutuhkan 66 pengajar baru untuk memenuhi kebutuhan prodi yang sudah ada.

Once upon a time in Northern Garut, there was lived a rich woman named Nyi Endit. She lived alone in a very big house. She was very greedy so people called her Bagenda Endit, the greedy wealthy woman.
“I’m the richest woman in this village. Ha..ha..ha all these wealth are mine. No one can take even a little cent from me.”
“I have all of these by my own. So why do I have to share the things with the other?” That was what she thought about. She didn’t care with the people around her,although they were very poor and were starving.
One day, a very old woman came to her and asked for help.
She said,” Bagenda Endit, please help me. My son has never had any food for days. We are starving”.
“Hi, the ugly old woman! Get away from me! I don’t care with you or your son. Whether you are starving or even dying, it is not my bussiness.” Bagenda Endit shouted.
The old woman didn’t move from Bagenda Endit sight so Bagenda Endit sprayed the woman with some water. The old woman and her son got wet.
Bagenda Endit was so cruel. She didn’t feel a little sorry for the old woman. Even she got angrier. She forced the old woman to get out of her yard .
“Hi..hi..hi ! What such a foolish woman! Who does she think she is, so that she comes to me for a help.”
A few days later, a very old man ,with a stick to walk, came to Bagenda Endit and asked for some water.
“Bagenda, please give me some water. I am so thirsty. If you don’t mind I’ll take the water from your well.” Asked the old man.
“Hey, the poor old man. I don’t want you to take my water. Any drop of my water is only for me. No one can take any of them. Go away!”said Bagenda Endit.
The man went by..., He used his stick to walk. He stopped by the Bagenda Endit’s house yard,put his stick on the ground and shouted ,”Bagenda Endit, you don’t want to loose any drop of your water. Now I will give you more water.”

Candi Prambanan or Candi Rara Jonggrang is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Central Java, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) northeast of the city of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces.

But behind the grandeur of prambanan Temple is preserved a very tragic love story between bandung bondowoso and roro jonggrang

Once upon a time, there was a vicious King by the name King Baka, who liked to sacrifice humans everyday. He had a preference for killing young people. This behavior caused the people to be always in panic, but they could not do anything because the King was so powerful. So everyday he sent his soldiers to find people suitable to be killed. These soldiers looked as vicious as their master. But the soldiers were also afraid of King Baka, because if they failed to find the victim, they became the victim instead.

So, from day to day people became more worried and many of them fled to the neighboring places to find safety away from the vicious King. Fortunately, a neighboring kingdom was headed by a very wise King, the King of Pengging. He always took care his people and protected them against any threat. He heard about the vicious King, and he tried to find ways to kill King Baka. He knew that one day the vicious King might attack his Kingdom. The wise King had a son called Bandung Bondowoso, his only son whom he loved so much. Bandung Bondowoso grew up to be a young man whom his father expected to take over the kingdom at a later time. One day Bandung Bondowoso asked his father if he might go to meditate in faraway place in order to improve his spiritual strength. His father was very pleased with his son's idea. So the King ordered his soldiers to accompany his son on his journey to a place for meditation. Bandung Bondowoso was committed to a period of meditation after he got a blessing from God . At last he finished his meditation after 15 years in a dense wood. So Bandung Bondowoso became a powerful young man, invulnerable to injury because of his powerful spiritual strength. He returned to his father's palace. All the people were very happyto see Bandung Bondowoso returned home, especially his father, the King. The people of Pengging Kingdom expected Bandung now to be able to kill the neighboring vicious King Baka. His father told Bandung Bondowoso to be prepared for a battle with King Baka.

Up to that time, no one had been able to defeat King Baka, and many countries had been brought under his authority and had to pay their tribute to him. So one night, Bandung Bondowoso stayed awake praying to God, asking him for His Blessing in the coming fight against King Baka. The next morning, Bandung Bondowoso and his soldiers marched to King Baka's Palace. His arrival was unexpected. The battle could not be avoided. There now followed more than 1 0 days of fighting, many casualties resulted on both sides. The air stank with the smell of the dead bodies of the soldiers. Then King Baka realized that Bandung Bondowoso was strong enough to kill all of his soldiers. So he decided to face Bandung Bondowoso by himself, one to one, in battle to avoid more casualties among the soldiers.
The anger of King Baka was no longer in control. He raced down into the battle area to confront Prince Bandung Bondowoso. The soldiers of King Baka hailed him loudly. Both King Baka and Prince Bandung Bondowoso used their full strength and skill against each other. But in time the younger Prince Bandung Bondowoso was able to defeat King Baka, and finally with his last blow, Bandung Bondowoso killed King Baka. King Baka's soldiers ran away, fleeing from the battle ground for safety.

Then the victorious Prince Bandung Bondowoso and his soldiers marched into King Baka's Palace. He went through every part of the palace, and finally he met a very beautiful girl inside the royal park. Bandung Bondowoso was stunned by the beautiful girl in front of him. He had no idea at all who she was. He approached the girl and asked her softly who she was. But the girl was so frightened that she could not answer him. Calmly he looked at his soldiers, waiting for an explanation. Then one of his soldiers explained him that she was the daughter of King Baka, Princess Lorojonggrang. He was once again surprised that the vicious King Baka had such a beautiful daughter. He wanted to hear from the girl herself that she was the daughter of King Baka. He asked the princess, " Is it true that you are the daughter of King Baka ?". Gently she whisper to him that she was. In his heart Prince Bandung Bondowoso admired the princess' beauty. If he had known that King Baka had a beautiful daughter, he would not have killed the King . Bandung Bondowoso felt pity for Lorojonggrang but he could not undo the killing of her father.

So, Prince Bandung Bondowoso approached Princess Lorojonggrang once again saying that he did not know that King Baka had a beautiful daughter. She moved away frightened, looking at Prince Bandung Bondowoso, who appeared strong and well built, but his face was as ugly as a giant's. Princess Lorojonggrang kept silent. Then Prince Bandung Bondowoso asked her if she already had a husband. While she wiped the sweat from her frightened face she answered that she was still a maiden. She asked Bandung Bondowoso if he was the one who killed her father. The Prince answered that it was so. On hearing the Prince' answer, the princess felt a new hatred grow in her heart toward this man who had asked her to marry him. The Princess tried several times to avoid the question and moved further away from the Prince . Gently he approached her and whispered : "Will you marry me and be my only wife?", "Whatever you wish I will give anything you want", she responded. " Don't think to what has had happened. If your father were alive, I would extend my proposal to him. But things have been done and God has decided our fate, and we should accept whatever God has decided". The princess remained silent. In her mind she was trying to think how to stay alive and not anger Bandung Bondowoso . She decided that she would not marry an ugly man, whoever he was.

Softly she agreed to marry Bandung Bondowoso on one condition. She asked Bandung Bondowoso to make 1000 temples for her in one night. The Prince was surprised at the condition she proposed. He said, " Why must I build so many temples for you?". Princess Lorojonggrang answered, "Oh, I love the temples. They can be used to beautify our park and as ornaments for the ladies park. We can also use the temples for our honeymoon and besides they will be nice for our children to play in". The Prince was stunned for awhile, but his love to Lorojonggrang and his powerful spiritual strength helped him decide that he would make 1000 temples as proposed.

Before the sunset, he meditated and asked help from God, and from all the spirits to help him build the 1000 temples. Then the work started, With the Prince and his soldiers helped by all the Spirits and Demons, the work ran so fast that it worried Lorojonggrang She prayed to all the heavenly beings, saying that it was unfair for her to marry an ugly man like Bandung Bondowoso. She asked God to keep her from marrying this ugly man. Then God whispered to her what she must do. Very early in the morning, before the cock started crowing, she went out from the Palace heading toward the village.There she ordered all the villagers, mostly women, to bang the bamboo drum, creating a loud noise as a signal that sunrise was approaching. The first bamboo drum sounding encourages all to do likewise and soon all the people were sounding the bamboo drums. Suddenly, the cock crowed more and more, harder and harder, until all cocks in the village were crowing together: Everyone came out from the houses carrying their farm tools as if they were ready to work in the fields. In fact the day was still dark, no sign of sunrise. The heavenly beings, the ghosts and other spiritual souls, now hear the drumming and believe the morning sun will came out soon. People be starting their field work right away, and those ghost and spiritual souls, who were busy making the temples, were afraid of seeing people, So they fled. The princess had found a way to trick Bandung Bondowoso away from his work.
Suddenly, the sound from the working of the temples stopped . Bandung Bondowoso was surprised; why had the work stopped. He counted the number of temples which had been finished, ........ in all there were 999 temples. One more temple and he would be able to marry Lorojonggrang. He looked around trying to find what had stopped the work. Then he saw Lorojonggrang still banging on the bamboo drum, accompanied by the village girls. Now Bandung Bondowoso realized that it was Lorojonggrang who caused the work to stop. Bandung Bondowoso shouted at her angrily, "Lorojonggrang, now I know that you are a very treacherous woman, a liar, a vicious woman, damn you girl. I almost finished making the 1000 temples, why did you interrupt my work. One more temple and you become my wife." "Calm down my dear Prince, I love you because you are so strong and powerful" replied Lorojonggrang." It seems that God did not permit us to be husband and wife " continued Lorojonggrang. Prince Bandung Bondowoso's anger was no longer under control. "You are not worthy to live, may God curse you" yelled the Prince. "Since I need one more temple to finish the 1000 , I will make you the statue of Lorojonggrang to complete my 1000 temples" shouted the Prince, roaring like an angry tiger. At that at moment the world stood still, and the beautiful Princess Lorojonggrang became a stone statue. The Prince was silent, amazed that the Princess had really changed into a stony yet beautiful statue . Still in his remaining anger, he looked towards the village girls and said : "You, Prambanan girls, you will never marry anybody, you will be old maids."

It is said that among the statues in Lorojonggrang Temple, there is one statue that looks lonely. The story of Bandung Bondowoso is a tale reminding people, that excessive power can mislead one's wisdom, and turn one into a ruthless person whatever his or her position in the community, as happened with King Baka. On the other hand, Prince Bandung Bondowoso, who had shown his loyalty to his father and his people, when he became too strong, his own strength did not always lead to the satisfaction of all his desires. When he was unable to control himself during his anger, his only words brought tragedy upon him.

One day, Pitung and his group stuck by Dutch police stratagem. Si Pitung along with his group would rob a demang, but it turns out the Dutch police had earlier hiding around the House demang. When police arrived, Pitung group immediately laid siege to the House. Pitung let himself get caught, while his friends managed to escape. Finally si Pitung was taken to jail and held there.

Because the Pitung is an ingenious extensible and powerful, then he managed to escape through the roof at night when the guard is resting. In the morning, the guards panicked because Pitung not in prison anymore.

This sign of si Pitung news made the Dutch police and the rich people become not at peace again. Then Schout Heyne commanded to arrest the parents and teachers of si Pitung. The king decided to marry Dewi Mutiara. He had a son from her. Dewi Mutiara wanted her son to become a king in the future. She asked the King to send his daughter away. The king did not agree.

Dewi Mutiara called a black wizard to curse Kadita. She wanted Kadita’s beautiful body full of ulcer. Then, Kadita’s body was full of ulcer. It smelled bad. The beautiful princess cried.

The King was sad. No one could cure his daughter’s illness. The king did not want her daughter to be a rumor so he sent her away.

The poor princess did not know where to go. However, she had a noble heart. She did not have any bad feeling about her step mother. She walked for almost seven days and seven nights. Then, she came to the south Ocean. The ocean was so clean and clear. She jumped into the water and swam.Suddenly, there was a miracle. The ocean water cured her illness. Jaka Tarub was a handsome and diligent young man. He lived in a village near a lake. One day, when Jaka Tarub passed the lake, he heard some giggles and laughs of some girls who were bathing in the lake. He was curious, so he peeped through the bushes. There were seven beautiful girls in the lake. They’re fairies from the heavenly kingdom of kahyangan. Jaka Tarub saw a scarf near the bushes. It belonged to one of the fairies. Jaka Tarub then took it and hid it.

Crack!!! Accidentally, Jaka Tarub stepped on a twig. “There’s someone!” said one of the fairies. “Let’s get back. Hurry!” she said. They pulled over and wear their scarf. “Where is my scarf?” one of the fairies couldn’t find her scarf. She was the youngest fairy called Nawang Wulan. They tried to search for it, but it was no where to be found. “We’re sorry, Wulan. We have to go back to kahyangan,” said the eldest fairy. “You’ll have to find it by yourself. We’ll wait for you in kahyangan,” she said in empathy. The other fairies then flew to the sky leaving Nawang Wulan behind. Nawang Wulan saw them leaving in tears. She was so sad.

“Excuse me …,” said Jaka Tarub, startling Nawang Wulan. “Are you okay?” he asked. Nawang Wulan moved backward, “Who are you?” she asked. “My name is Jaka Tarub. I was passing by and I heard you crying, so I came to see what happen,” Jaka Tarub lied. Nawang Wulan then told him about her problem. “I can’t fly without my scarf,” she said. Jaka Tarub then asked Nawang Wulan to come home with him. At first, Nawang Wulan refused the offer. But since she didn’t have anywhere else to go, Nawang Wulan then decided to follow Jaka Tarub.

Nawang Wulan stayed with Jaka Tarub in the village. A month passed, and they decided to get married. Nawang Wulan was willing to marry a human because she fell in love with Jaka Tarub. After a year, they had a beautiful daughter. They named her Kumalasari. They lived happily.

Jaka Tarub was also happy to live with Nawang Wulan and Kumalasari. Especially because he always got a lot of harvest since he married Nawang Wulan. He couldn’t even keep all of his harvest in the barn because it was always full. “It’s so weird. Nawang Wulan cooked everyday, but why is my barn always full,” Jaka Tarub mumbled to himself. He was so curious. One day, Jaka Tarub stayed at home. “I want to stay home today. I’d like to play with Kumalasari,” he said to his wife. “Well, I’ll go to the river to wash the clothes. Please keep an eye on Kumalasari,” asked Nawang Wulan. “I’m cooking rice now. Please do not open the pan cover before it’s done,” she said just before she left. “Could this be the secret?” Jaka Tarub thought. After Nawang Wulan left, he curiously opened the pan cover. He found only one single paddy. “How come?” he wondered.

Before lunch, Nawang Wulan came home. She headed to the kitchen to see the rice she had cooked. She found that the rice turned into only a few grains. “Did you open the pan cover?” she asked her husband. “I… I’m sorry. I was curious,” Jaka Tarub said as he realized his fault.

Ever since, Nawang Wulan had lost her power. She couldn’t cook rice with only a single paddy. Their paddy supply was slowly lessened. Their barn was almost empty. One day, Nawang Wulan went to the barn to get some paddy. When she took one of them, she found a scarf. “What’s this? This is my scarf,” said Nawang Wulan startled.

That night, Nawang Wulan asked her husband about the scarf. Jaka Tarub’s eyes widened, “You found it?” he asked. Jaka Tarub looked down and asked for her forgiveness. “Because I’ve found my scarf, it’s time for me to go back to where I belong,” Nawang Wulan said. Jaka Tarub tried to stop her, but Nawang Wulan had made up her mind. “Please take good care of Kumalasari,” she said. “If she wanted to see me, take seven grains of candlenut and put it into a basket. Shake it as you play the bamboo flute. I’ll come to see her,” she explained.

A long time ago there was a kingdom called Medang Kamulan. The kingdom of Medang Kamulan was ruled by Prabu Dewata Cengkar. The people in the kingdom were very scared by the king. It was because the king liked to eat human flesh. Once a week, he commanded his messenger, Patih Jugul Muda, to find him a human to eat.

Far away from the kingdom of Medang Kamulan, there was a village called Medang Kawit. A young man named Aji Saka lived there. Aji Saka was a brave young man. He loved to help people who needed help. One day, Aji Saka saw an old man lying unconscious on the ground. The old man was wounded. Some thieves just hit him and stole his money. Aji Saka then carried the old man to his hut. Soon after, the old man started to regain consciousness. “Where…am I?” he asked. “You’re in my house. You’re safe now,” said Aji Saka. It turned out that the old man was from the kingdom of Medang Kamulan. “Everybody was leaving Medang Kamulan,” the old man told Aji Saka. He also told him about Prabu Dewata Cengkar’s bad habit. “We were terrified, that’s why we left,” The old man said.

After he heard the explanation from the old man, Aji Saka decided to go meet Prabu Dewata Cengkar and make him stop the menace. With his magical white turban on his head, Aji Saka went to the kingdom. The turban was a gift from his Guru that could be used to fight evil. On his journey to Medang Kamulan, Aji Saka passed through a very dark forest where he met an evil genie. The genie blocked his path. “If you want to get through this forest, you must be my slave for ten years,” the genie demanded. Aji Saka refused to be the genie’s slave. The two of them then fight for seven days and seven nights, until at last Aji Saka came out as winner. The genie finally allowed Aji Saka to pass through the forest.

When Aji Saka arrived in the kingdom of Medang Kamulan, the king was angry to Patih Jugul Muda. He was not able to find the king some humans. “If you can’t find me any humans, I’ll eat you instead,” Prabu Dewata Cengkar said to Patih Jugul Muda. After Patih Jugul Muda left, Aji Saka revealed himself. Prabu Dewata Cengkar’s eyes suddenly widened upon seeing Aji Saka. He could already imagine how delicious his meat would taste. “Who are you?” asked Prabu Dewata Cengkar. “I am Aji Saka from the village of Medang Kawit,” Aji Saka answered. “Ha…ha…ha…. I’m glad you came here. You would be my meal. I’m starving,” said the king.

“I would gladly let you eat me, but I want something in return.” Aji Saka said. “What is it that you want?” asked Prabu Dewata Cengkar. “I want a land as large as my turban,” said Aji Saka. He then took off his turban and threw it on the ground. Prabu Dewata Cengkar agreed. He himself would measure the land with Aji Saka’s turban. Suddenly the turban grew bigger and bigger. It just kept on stretching until it finally covered the whole kingdom. Prabu Dewata Cengkar was angry. He then attacked Aji Saka. But, then the turban wrapped itself around him and began to strangle him. The turban then threw the king’s body to the South Sea. The waves carried Prabu dewata Cengkar away until he finally drowned and died.

Aji Saka then asked the people of Medang Kamulan to come back to the kingdom. They all thanked the brave Aji Saka. They also agreed to make Aji Saka to be their king. Aji Saka then ruled the kingdom wisely. Under the leadership of Aji Saka, Medang Kamulan become a peaceful and prosperous kingdom.

The Legend of Lutung Kasarung

Prabu Tapa Agung was an old king. He had two daughters, Purbararang and Purbasari. Prabu Tapa Agung planned to retire as a king. Prabu Tapa Agung appoint Purbasari, her youngest daughter to replace him as a the leader of the kingdom.

"I'm too old, it's time I stepped off the throne," said Prabu Tapa.

Purbasari has a sister named Purbararang. Hearing this, Purbararang was angry. He does not agree his sister was appointed to replace their father.

"You cannot ask her to be the queen, Father. I'm older than she is. It's supposed to be me, not her!" said Purbararang.

But the king still chose Purbasari to be the next queen. Purbararang then set a bad plan with her fiance, Indrajaya. Together they went to a witch and asked her to put a spell on Purbasari. Later, suddenly Purbasari had bad skin. There were black dots all over her body. Purbararang make it an excuse to expel her sister.

"People who cursed like her does not deserve to be a Queen!" said Purbararang to her father.

And then Purbararang go to meet her sister.

"You are not as beautiful as I am. You cannot be the queen. Instead, you have to leave this palace and stay in a jungle," said Purbararang.

Then she sent a Patih (Governor) to alienate Purbasari into the forest. Purbasari was very sad.

Arriving at the jungle, Patih (The Governor) is still kind enough to make a hut for Princess Purbasari. He also advised Purbasari, "Be brave Princess. The affliction will surely end, the Almighty will always be with Princess".

"Thank you uncle," said Purbasari.

Now she had to stay in the jungle. Over in the jungle he has many friends of animals that are always good to her. Everyday she spent her time playing with some animals. Among these animals there was a mysterious black hairy monkey that always tried to cheer her up. It was not just an ordinary monkey, he had magical power. And he also could talk with humans. The monkey's name was Lutung Kasarung. The monkey is the most attention to Purbasari. Lutung Kasarung is always make happy Princess Purbasari to get the beautiful flowers and fruits with their friends.

At the time of full moon night, Lutung Kasarung acting strange. He walked to a quiet place and meditate. He is obtaining something to the Gods. This proves that the Lutung Kasarung no ordinary creature. Not long later, near the monkey broke ground and created a small lake, the water was clear as a bell. The water contains a ingredients that is very fragrant.

The next day Lutung Kasarung meet Purbasari and asked her to bathe in the lake.

"What's in it for me?" thought Purbasari.

But she was willing to oblige. Shortly after he plunged himself into the river. Something happened to her skin. Her bad skin is cured and she becomes beautiful again. Purbasari very surprised and very happy when she looked in the mirror in the lake.

After that, she asked Lutung Kasarung to accompany her to go back to the palace. Purbararang was very shocked, she not believe to see her sister get the beauty skin again. She knew she had to come up with another bad idea.

"Who is the longest hair she was the one who wins and will be the queen!" said Purbararang.

Originally Purbasari not want to, but because Purbararang urged continued to serve her. The king then measured his daughters hair. Apparently Purbasari hair is longer.

"Purbasari had longest hair," said the king.

But Purbararang did not give up.

"Well I lose,, but now let us compete, who have the handsomest fiance,, This is my fiance," said Purbararang while approached Indrajaya.

Purbasari was sad. She knew Purbararang's fiance was handsome. And she did not have a fiance yet. Purbasari became restless and confused. Finally, he glanced at his hand and pulled Lutung Kasarung. Lutung Kasarung bounced as if to calm Purbasari.

Purbararang laughed out loud, "So the monkey is your fiance?"

At that time also Lutung Kasarung immediately meditated. Suddenly there was a miracle. Lutung Kasarung turn into a handsome young man looking very handsome, and he was even more handsome than Indrajaya. All surprised to see the incident as she cheered.

Purbararang finally admitted defeat and guilt over this. He apologized to his brother and begged not to be punished. She forgave Purbararang and her fiance and let them stay in the palace.

At last, Purbasari become a queen, accompanied by a young man in her dreams. The young man who turns out has always been with him in the forest in the shape of a monkey.

Story of Kancil and Monkey

Once Kancil was fell into the hole had dug by a hunter to catch the tiger. Because the hole was deep enough, it was very confused; because of course it would be difficult to jump. The effect, it couldn’t breathe nature reserve more in. Most, in the hole there were no food or drinking water anymore.

For a few minutes in the hole, suddenly there was a leaf fell down into the hole. The leaf was from a tree surround the hole which was close to. “Great luck! Alright, I will pretend to read this leaf like there is a text on. Then there is one hear my voice, so it will approach here. After that I will invite it to come into this! It is not bad idea!” Kancil said as wiping off its head.

“On the moon two days has been trapped, the trapped day on the moon two; I am free other people are confined, other people are confined I am free” So it was it said repeatedly as if it was reading the letter. For a long time he was reciting it, but no one approached it. Kancil was not hopeless; it read it louder till its voice being hoarse. However more and more no one came.

Not far from the hole, a gang of monkey approached. When the ears of Kancil heard monkey’s voice, it read the writing of leaf louder and louder. So because of that voice, a monkey visited it from the tree. When they looked at each other, the monkey asked, “What are you doing, Kancil? You look like a crazy animal? The other monkeys came approaching the hole. “You don’t know what happened!” Kancil said. “Don’t you look the sky will fall down? Come in……protect yourself soon?!” then, “Look up! As pointing the sky; won’t the sky fall down? Come on, jump into this hole in order to avoid you all from the death!” it lied to the monkeys. Because being afraid of the death, so the monkeys fell down directly to save themselves. After they all came into the hole, then Kancil said; Are there your other friends outside? If so, let me to pick them up! It is pitiful if they died there!” The monkeys said that all of their friends have been here.

“E-eh….the sky has moved down!” Kancil said to make them afraid. Astounding! My grandmother still outside! Is there one of you brave to pick it up?” it tested the monkey. They all were quivering. One was probably their leader said, “Enough kancil, it is better if you pick it up! And please tell to other friends to hide here! It’s pitiful if they are died because the sky!” Hearing their agreement, Kancil felt comfortable. However in order to not being suspicious, Kancil pretended to refuse it. Then the monkeys pressured it, so Kancil even said, “How can I go out? Ah….I fell afraid?! Furthermore, Do I know when I go up, then the sky fall down? So I will be dead, whereas you’re free from the death! it said as if it’s difficult to accept. “Yet…,” it pretended thinking for a moment. “Alright! Anymore, I can’t forget my grandmother’s favor! Please, you all throw me out of this hole in order that I can come back soon! Or like this! You all make stairs by constructing your body like pyramid. So I will be easy go up by your back!” The monkeys didn’t protest more. They did what Kancil suggested. Afterwards kancil walked on their back till reached the top of the hole. Then it jumped up,”hu…up!” Now it was free to breathe the fresh air in. After arriving to the top, it repeated the reading:

“On the moon two days has been trapped, the trapped day on the moon two; I am free other people are confined, other people are confined I am free.” Then it repeated 2-3 times. Afterwards, it left the monkeys which were confined succeeding its self.

When Kancil was joining its trip, it met the tiger. It felt afraid because it was impossible to avoid. “What is the idea to avoid it?” it thought under heart. “O…here is the feces of buffalo! If so….?” It thought again, “I have an idea!” Then it took a slice of wide leafs and it covered the feces up. Afterwards it kept it away by other leaf. The tiger approached it, “what are you doing, Kancil?!” it asked. “Nothing grandmother (a summons for tiger in that country), I am just given the duty by the king Sulaiman to protect his food. He will come to eat for a while later,” said kancil as keeping the feces away. Hearing that, the tiger felt hungry, “how if you give this food for me? Accidentally I felt so hungry!” it asked to kancil. “I don’t, grandmother! I am afraid if the king Sulaiman being angry with me. If this food is not arrived to him, I would be killed! So I forbid you to eat this!” Kancil pretended. “I am very hungry, Kancil! If you don’t give it, I will eat you soon! Give it or not?!” it threatened by its tusks.

“If so grandmother, please take it, but I should go first in order that I get free of the punishment from the king,” says Kancil deceiving the tiger. The tiger was very happy heard this, “Ok Kancil, please go away from me! I am so hungry, I will eat this soon!”

Kancil then went by whole of its power. Afterwards the tiger began to eat the feces supposed food. “Ngaup..,” it joined the feces. However, then its stomach felt painful, so that it was very angry with Kancil. It knew it was not food but buffalo’s feces. Because of that, it tried to chase after Kancil. It followed the track of Kancil till the track was not clear anymore. “Damn it”, the tiger mocked Kancil roughly. It didn’t found Kancil for a long the day. So, it became more and more angry. However it didn’t know what to do. It just could keep that animosity till the exact time to revenge.

Sangkuriang: The Legend of Mount Tangkuban Perahu

Once upon a time, a beautiful lady named Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a boy which she named Sangkuriang. When Sangkuriang was old enough to hunt, he took his mother’s dog Tumang (which according to this legend is an incarnation of a god and also Sangkuriang’s father) and ordered Tumang to chase after a boar. When Tumang did not follow Sangkuriang’s order, Sangkuriang became very angry and he killed Tumang. He carved out Tumang’s heart and brought it back to his mother.

Dayang Sumbi took the heart, cooked it and ate it. When she discovered that the heart belonged to Tumang, her husband, she was overcome with wrath. She sent her son away, but not before she hit him with a spoon and left a deep scar on his head.

Sangkuriang travelled around the world. After a long while, he arrived back in his village again without recognizing it. He saw a beautiful lady and fell in love with her. Little did he know that she was his own mother. He asked for her hand in marriage and she agreed.

Dayang Sumbi later realized that Sangkuriang was her son, as she recognized the scar that she had inflicted. She tried to tell him and break off the wedding, but he didn’t believe her and insisted to go on with the wedding. Dayang Sumbi then set an impossible condition that Sangkuriang has to fulfill in order to marry her: he should build her a big boat and a lake by damming Citarum river, all within one night, and it shall be finished by dawn. Sangkuriang agreed to the condition.

He built a boat from a large tree, and with the help of spirits, he dammed the Citarum river with landslides. The water eventually rose and filled the plain, turning it into a lake. When dawn was near, he was almost ready. Dayang Sumbi realized this, so she prayed for divine intervention. As an answer to her prayers, the eastern horizon lit up. Deceived by the lights, cocks crowed and farmers rose for the new day, thinking that dawn has broken.

Sangkuriang was also deceived. He thought his endeavor has failed. Angrily, he kicked the boat so that it toppled over. This boat became Tangkuban Parahu mountain (tangkuban means upside down, and parahu means boat). The pile of leftover woods became Mt. Burangrang, and the rest of the big tree became Mt. Bukit Tunggul. The lake became lake Bandung

The Legend of Malin Kundang

Malin Kundang (also called Si Tanggang or Nakhoda Manis) is a Southeast Asian folktale about retribution on an ungrateful son. A sailor from a poor family, the protagonist sneaks onto a trading ship, eventually becoming rich, marrying a princess, and acquiring his own galleon. On his return to his home village, he is ashamed of his humble origins and refuses to recognise his elderly mother. She curses him, and when he sets sail, he and his ship are turned to stone.

In Indonesia, the story is called Malin Kundang, and the legend is based in West Sumatra. Air Manis, a beach near Padang, has a rock formation called Batu Malin Kundang that is said to be the remains of his ship.

A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, a woman and her son lived. They were Malin Kundang and her mother. Her mother was a single parent because Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby. Malin Kundang had to live hard with his mother

Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish. After getting fish he would bring it to his mother, or sold the caught fish in the town. One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant's ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. He helped the merchant. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and thanked to him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone. Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and was helped by many ship crews loading trading goods. Perfectly he had a beautiful wife too. When he was sailing his trading journey, his ship landed on a beach near a small village. The villagers recognized him. The news ran fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”.

An old woman ran to the beach to meet the new rich merchant. She was Malin Kundang’s mother. She wanted to hug him, released her sadness of being lonely after so long time. Unfortunately, when the mother came, Malin Kundang who was in front of his well dressed wife and his ship crews denied meeting that old lonely woman. For three times her mother begged Malin Kundang and for three times he yelled at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her "Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman!" After that he ordered his crews to set sail. He would leave the old mother again but in that time she was full of both sadness and angriness. Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail.

In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship. He fell on a small island. It was really too late for him to avoid his curse. Suddenly,

he turned into a stone.

Timun Mas

Once upon a time in Java, there was a poor widow named Mbok Srini that lived alone in her humble house on the edge of the jungle. She felt so lonely and pray to the gods to bless her with a child. One night in her dream she envisioned something wrapped under a tree in the jungle. She took this dream as an omen, an answer for her prayer. Later she go to the jungle to search something wrapped inside a cloth under a tree, she expected to find a baby to take care. Finally she discover the object wrapped inside a cloth under the tree exactly as her vision in her dream. When she unwrap it, there was no baby inside wrapped inside the clothes but only a seed of cucumber. Suddenly she heard a monstrous laughter; a green-skinned giant named Butho Ijo (Javanese: "Green Giant") appeared behind her. The green giant told her to plant the cucumber seed and she will have a child. She must nurture the child, however when the child had grown up, Mbok Srini must give the child back to Butho Ijo. The giant wish to eat the child. Eager to have a child, Mbok Srini accepted Butho Ijo's condition.

Mbok Srini return to her home and plant the cucumber seed in orchard behind her house. Later a magical golden cucumber grow from the seed, and when Mbok Srini took the cucumber and open it, a beautiful baby girl appear inside the golden cucumber. Thus she named the baby girl Timun Mas which means "golden cucumber". Years after years Timun Mas grow to become a beautiful girl. She is a loving, kind and diligent child that always help and took care of ageing Mbok Srini. Just a week before Timun Mas' 17th birthday, Butho Ijo appeared in front of Mbok Srini house and remind her about her promise, and announce that within one week he will return to collect Timun Mas. Mbok Srini is so sad and fearful of the horrible fate that awaits her beloved child. Mbok Srini heard that there is a powerful rishi that reside in a mountain nearby. She hastily go to the mountain to seek help to a wise old hermit that reside secluded on the mountain. After heard her story, the old hermit gave her four small bags of cloth with something inside it. The four objects inside the bags are cucumber seeds, needles, salts, and terasi (shrimp paste). The hermit told Mbok Srini to give this objects to Timun Mas and tell her to throw these objects when she being chased by the giant. Mbok Srini return home and told Timun Mas what to do if the green giant chase her.

Finally on Timun Mas 17th birthday, Butho Ijo appear at Mbok Srini house to take Timun Mas as promised The green giant will eat the girl. Mbok Srini ordered Timun Mas to run for her life. Timun Mas really scared and terrified and run as fast as she can tried to escape the giant. The giant was furious and destroyed Mbok Srini house and chasing Timun Mas. Finally Butho Ijo catch up to fleeing Timun Mas. In distress Timun Mas open one of her four cloth bag and spreading cucumber seed behind her. Suddenly a large cucumber vines appeared and strangled the giant's body, trapped him so he can’t move. This give Timun Mas time to escape further. However the powerful giant finally managed to break free and continue his chase. Timun Mas upen her second bag and spreading needles behind her. Suddenly the needles transformed into a bamboo forest with sharp tips that wounded the giant badly. The giant were hurt and wounded stuck with sharp bamboos, however Butho Ijo manage to get through the sharp bamboo forest and catch up to running Timun Mas. She opened her third bag and spreading salts behind her back. Suddenly a sea appeared behind her drowning the evil giant. However the giant manage to swim through the sea and continue to chase her. Timun Mas once again almost get caught and open her last bag. She throw the terasi behind her and continue to run desperately. Suddenly the terasi shrimp paste transformed into sea of boiling volcanic mud. Butho Ijo stuck inside the boiling hot mud, drowned and died. Timun Mas finally survive and return to her mother Mbok Srini. They lived happily ever after.
