We had dinner there in a small shop; I had nothing since afternoon, was famished and digged in.

We got into the bus, where another group of youngster, far younger than us, maybe fresh just from college or around an year of experience I guess, were also traveling. The bus started around 8:55 pm, almost twenty minutes late. It took us another two hours just to get to kathiparai. This was one of the longest short drives for me in years. I have never been caught up in jam like today in any bus journey or in my two wheeler before.

We had fun talking about our offices, pulling each others legs and talking about the good old days. Time flew and it was almost 12:00 am, some of the older travelers started to get agitated by our shouting and laughing. We were the less noisy group though. After an outburst from one the older traveling people, things quitened up a bit. After the stop around midnight, we continued on.

This was a sleepless night as I had anticipated, the seats were comfy, but most of us were not regular travelers, and it told in us not able to cope with the alien conditions. We slept in fits, the road getting bad all the time. During the later part of the journey, just when we were dozing off one by one, we were jolted from our short lived slumber due to a bad bump in the road here or one or more potholes there and a combination of both. The super driver added to our woes, he never slowed in the bad patches. For him this was just another day in office I guess, I can't blame this though.

We got up pretty early around 600 am, when the bus reached near trichy. Our chatter started once again, with noise levels rising with the day. We reached tiruchirapalli and alighted in the bus stand around 630 am. We tried to call shoba once we came into trichy. The phone kept ringing the first few tries, then somebody (later came it was her uncle), they told us we would be picked up by a rental car near the bus stand and were given the plate no.

We alighted in the bus stand, to the loo direct, as most us wanted to free our bladders. It was bad to say the least about the condition of the toilets. I have been to far worse versions back here in Chennai, but Mathew and Murali literally ran out the moment then came in. We will never forget this.

The climate was nice; it was slightly chilly in the morning, but not so hot later. It was just fine. We had tea and then got into the car and reached rangiem (shoba' s native place). We reached her home, said our hi’s to be the bride to be and her parents. Met her dad, mum and grandma. We had coffee, and then were escorted by car to one of their relative place.

We got ready. Breakfast awaited us on our return, a typical chettinad breakfast, we all enjoyed it. We had a heavy breakfast to say the least. They we sat out and chatted for a while.

Soon the “mappillai azaiophu” started and we got into the thick of things, I was sort of the unofficial photographer for the group. We went to home in a nearby street where the ceremony too place. Chandrasingh kept pushing me to go upfront and snap pictures, he harassed me very much, its true!!! We saw the groom, they make a good pair. We returned to shoba' s house and soon the marriage started. This is the first chettinad wedding that I am attending. It was a small and simple weeding, surrounded by relatives and close friends. Very different from the ones I’ve usually gone to. A nice experience.

Chandrasingh was very interested in all the happenings, he kept asking me question and most times I had nothing to say, it was all so new to me in the first place and I was never interested in these matters anyways from the start.

We were made to have an early lunch; we were still trying to lighten up after the morning breakfast. We just ate little, could not really appreciate the lunch, which was also good. But I must add not as good as the first one in the morning. Maybe our hunger earlier added to this biased view and we were so full from the morning feast.

We gave the present (a watch each for the couple) to the newly wed, congratulated her parents ,grand mother (who remembered incidentally - not surprising for me though) and took our leave soon.

We went back to her relative’s home, packed our bags and were dropped by car in Tiruchirapalli bus stand. We took a bus to Trichy. We wanted to catch the afternoon bus to Chennai and wanted to be home in time for bed. As it turned was, it was not meant to be.

We got a bus to Chennai, as soon as we got down in trichy. The bus started in a while. We stopped for snacks (that's what we thought) in samayapuram. Minutes went from 10, 20 to almost an hour. That's when we came to know that the bus has had technical problems, and could not go on. We were told that we would be put into busses coming our way to Chennai. There was chaos for a while, then it was decided we would be dropped back in trichy and our money were returned. There was some minor disputes regarding the fair amount, it was ambiguous as many was charged differently by the agents who got us the bus seats. Thankfully, nothing serious happened. Most got back what they paid.

Back in trichy; found out that no busses were available in the evening, booked for a late night bus to Chennai. To kill time, we went to a bar in a 3 star hotel nearby, had drinks and chatting away time. We then had dinner in a hotel near the bus stand and got into the bus with time to spare.

The return journey was as eventful as the onward, if not more. We felt tired, we slept better on the way back, but still not peaceful. I once again slept in fits. To add this, there was a big traffic jam and the bus meant to reach Chennai around 4-5 in the morning got here only around 8-9.

Murali got down in Tambaram and I got down in Kathiparai. The others went on to Koyambedu as it was nearer for them from there. I reached home around 9 am.

Check out the photos taken during the trip here http://www.flickr.com/photos/narsim/sets/72057594066259040/

Though we might remember the unpleasant things first, the sweeter will follow later and will last more than the less nice ones. For me at least I guess...This might probably be the last time I go on a trip with Kumar, he will soon be for starting for US, that makes it all the more memorable. A nice small trip that had many interesting moments.

Hope to take more of these marriage trips of my friends and colleagues former and new ones. These Marriage Trips are never empty.

This what Mathew had to say about this trip

Well, all in all it was an excellent trip. For any stretch of my imagination could have I predicted this weather, this monsoon season. We had rains before, good ones, but never so many, so many times that I started to have doubts if the weather gods had mistaken Chennai for some other place

On one hand, there is the comfort of a less water scare city, but that is not here now, today, that is what we expect Chennai to be in the neat future.

Chennai now, has been battered by these rains, more may follow. This may not augur well for the residents of the already marooned city and suburban places, but it brings in relief, the total lack of respect for nature and the total scavenging of what little resource exists in this already exhausted eroded mother earth.

Keeping in mind, that the rain harvesting was initiated makes this all the more appropriate. Destruction of whatever left little greenery and marsh lands in and around Chennai also have added to the woes.

And this is for me, is just the beginning, with no end but a tunnel of darkness ahead, unless the authorities get some sense into their greedy minds.

Ripples 2005 on 18 November 2005

This was the first time after college that i went out to attend any cultural event, one as a non-student. The event was held at Chennai Trade Centre. Some 5000 odd TCSers attended it from the 10 branches in Chennai.

It was fun. The function was a success to say the least. A significant portion of the group were just out of college kids or with maybe a year of experience. The exuberance of youth was obvious for everyone to see. So was the rebellion against authority.

There were actually two shows going on, the official at the front and the not so official at the back. When there was a dance up front, there was a party at the back. When there was a song in progress, there were dancing behind. Non tamil songs were booed, but hey the crowd was a mixture of many languages, so I guess they were a bit harsh.

There were plays/dramas, songs, dances and much much more. Some of the performances were really good. Some of the singers were also very good. Overall a very enjoyable evening.

The arrangements were also pretty decent, there was obviously without any need to say, scope for improvement. But none the less, well done. The transportations were also adequate.

The first outing with any company in the first instance and my first after joining TCS too. A memorable day in the annals of my TCS history and my career.

Its Raining Rain

This has been a phenomenal year for the southern parts of India. More so
for Chennai, and its surrounding areas. In the small insignificant life so
far, I have never seen so much rain. It was nothing spectacular, but the
results were there for everyone to see.

It was drizzling most of the daytime, but rained pretty heavily into the
night and wee hours. Chennaites are used to this drizzling but, not the kind
that sustains for more than a day or two.
Now that was the surprising part. Within a 40 hour window, we were caught
unawares and rest is history as we all came to know. I was one of a few of
the least affected, but my heart reaches out for the unfortunate souls. I
guess we were all fortunate in some ways, that it was not as bad as it
happened in Mumbai a while back. In that scenario, Chennai would have been
marooned to say the least.

Too little or too much, I guess both pretty much give the same result, i
guess. This blog may been too late to be appreciated, but it still is
pretty fresh in my mind (and quite a few more I am sure), and to bring home
the point! - the rainy season is not over yet for Chennai. I was searching for something to write. Finally i ended up writing up about writing what i am writing now about writing anything at all. Now this is writing i guess..........the writers words wrapped over each word about writing.

Lets get back to babbling (oops! - blogging i mean), shall we. Before i started on this, i was browsing as i have always have, just going around poking here and there. But since i started on it, i have tried to refine my wandering, i now try to look up on some popular blogs, try to read materials that are inter-related and information that i could use. I use to do this, but not in a regular manner that i am doing now.

Blogging has helped me to channelize my wandering in a definite pattern, though Still chaotic.

Hey you know what, now i have wound up writing something about something, that i was thinking about writing.

Babbling (oops blogging) at its best ;-)

28 going on 29

A Memorable Birthday

I am not much of a birthday celebrator, parents do the praying stuff for me, they go the temple and do other similar stuff. So one can pretty much guess what i do..., i just continue doing what i do the rest of the other 364 days of the year. But this year, it turned out to be a special one, the second in succession.

Ragavan was the first to wish me, full 2 days prior(fast isn't he..., very unlikely him). Then it was kalyani's turn on the eve of the D-Day, she wished me the very best. Kandavel called me up 15 minutes before the official day and gave me a present. Ramya was the first officially, minutes after the clock moved to the next day (sic I’m 28[completed] already). She read me a poem by (damm...i forgot the author). It was a new experience for me. It was nice, a first for me.

Jagannath (uncle) was the first relative to call me in the morning. Dad had picked it up. Ram was next. For the former i did not get up but for the later i had to or my bro will be really cross. I had told dad not to wake me up very early in the morning, man it will be just 7am when they start calling me, man they got to get a life and get to sleep late.......like i do, i usually get around 9am ;-)).

I got back into bed, just when i was drifting back to sleep, i was woken by Ragupathi and Ramya. They wished me happy birthday, made me cut a cake and splattered my face with cake and cream. A repeat of almost the same sequence like last year, except, for one of the participants. Any chances of me getting ba5ck to sleep were now next to nothing. Soon more relatives and colleagues called me up, wished me good luck and many happy returns.

When i reached office, everybody offered their pleasant greetings. Took the whole floor (almost); for lunch to a place called Amaravathi. I had initially planned to take only around 15-20 of the closest in the floor. But since i moved with virutally the whole staff, i was left with no choice but to take them all. It was a very nice experience. Except for preethi (the unlucky one), all the other girls/ladies came along ( i never expected them..so it made the occasion all the more special), so did Ravi, one of the engineers in the floor. I don't think this group will ever again go out the way we did. One or two like chandrasekar and suresh missed out on this, as they could not come to office for various personal reasons.

In the evening as was customary for the birthday boy, i cut the cake. The unusual event was that my face got covered with cake, again in the same day. Hari and Chandrasingh were the mischievous duo. This was a first for me, for anyone in our office i guess. I had a hard time, removing the cake and oily stuff from my face, felt like it would never go away. God! How do girls wear makeup day in and day out, my heart reached out for them for the few horrible minutes at least.

I was presented with a Pant (from the whole floor), a T-Shirt (from some of the newer guys) and a Shirt from Kumar as birthday gifts. I thanked them all for the gifts and expressed my pleasure. I selected the pant, when hari took me for shopping earlier.

I've shared some of the memoral moments captured by the electronic eye in my MSN Spaces
(http://spaces.msn.com/members/narsim/PersonalSpace.aspx)

Interim Trip (03 August 2005)

Interim One Day Trip

One of a handful of occasions, that will be etched for eternity in my mind. One of the very few that will make me smile when i go down memory lane, if not now, in a few years (time just flies as we all know). I will remember this day with fond memories.

We started from office around 9:30 am (Give or take 10 minutes) in two Jeeps we had rented. We coordinated with sambhu and the others by phone. We all agreed to meet up in Fisherman's cove. We alighted on the way to have something to eat for breakfast and reached there by 11:00am.

We took some photos and mingled for a while. Then we went to the "Machan" - the place we had rented in the beach. Scott and satish joined us soon. Some of us went to the beach and started playing in the water. Vijay thought he was going to drown in the hardly waist deep shore water. He even came as far as to shout for help. Renu and her hubby were a close second. We coaxed them to get in. It was fun. Later, shoba in the same category. Me and hari coaxed her to wade in. Murali and his wife also were caught in the act of trying to get in and scampered out soon. The others were scared (some just not interested......maybe) and stayed on dry land, Kumar in particular.

We started for the catamaran ride. One batch of six/seven went in a catamaran, the remaining in a motorboat. The catamaran was motorized. We went maybe half a kilometer. Then we jumped in the water and stayed there for a while maybe 30 minutes. It was amazing. Some of them were scared so much; they pretty much stuck to the rope that was thrown in the water for support. The ropes of the two boats were tied. Chandrasekar was so scared that he just bobbed in one place, his wife was more adventurous, but he did not let her budge from his side. Scott and satish were very cool in the water, i guess they've done this before. Renu and her hubby were very nervous, but then relaxed a bit later. Bharath was his own self and nearly capsized one of the boats in the process of trying to hang by its side. One of the fisherman who had come with us had to warm him and asked him to move out a bit. I was the first to jump out of our boat, so u can guess my enthusiasm for the water. Chandrasingh and sudhakar were not far behind. Initially when one jumps in, there is the innate fear of drowning, then logic kicks in and from there on it was simply fun. Some of us were swimming, some hanging for their dear life and some learning it the hard way. We came back to shore, when some of the traitors of the group came after me and nearly drowned me in the knee deep water ;-). Murali, Hari and Chandrasingh were the traitors. I escaped barely by a whisker.

But i should also have to add this..., in spite of their fear for water, people got in. One would have to respect their courage. My hats off to them, they have nothing to be ashamed of (as if they are ;-) but still i am compelled to admire). They conquered their fear(s).

We returned for lunch. But before that, had to wait in a long bathing line, and that only increased our hunger. Had a good light lunch. Poor non-vegetarians, there had very little options. The food was good. It was buffet, in the open, by the trees and very nice.

Some guys started on coke, juice, then beer and it just continued throught the day, ending with hot drinks by dinner.

After the lunch, we played beach volleyball. It was good clean fun. Though only a few managed to touch the ball in the first place, even less succeded in playing. But the sprit with which everybody participated, was all that mattered and we all had a great time. Rohan joined the watching scott and sathish in the midst of this.

Then around 5:00pm we retired for Tea. Then we drove to a Go-Karting centre, which is on the way from chennai to cove. We drove in karts in batches of 5. It was exhilirating to go at such high speech on such rickety and small karts. It was just too much fun and the adrenalin started pumping. Though some of the girls did not really want to drive, they too later joined in the fun. Some actually were pretty good at it. Priya (Chandrasekar wife) and Smitha(Murali wife) were the outstanding participants. I guess they drove better than some of the guys to be honest. We are trying to drive fast (most of us) and they were lots n lots of crashes, competition, lots of out of control turns and some really nice driving by sambhu and mathew, who stood out as the better drivers. I guess u can say i was the crash king. I made life miserable for the better drivers in my group in all the 3 times i was out there, but it was totally unintentional.

Shoba's mother joined us when we returned. So did Jagannath, Ramesh Babu and Ravishankar. We refreshed and socialized for a while before dinner. But man, the ladies took a long time to get dressed and be back. But i guess it was worth it when they finally did. We had a small meeting of sorts. Scott, Satish, Sambhu and Rohan gave little speeches. A few others like Hari, Murali chipped in.

Then the dinner started in full earnest. The food was good and so was the company. Buffet in the beach, by the shore outside the machan, one should habe been there to really understand and appreciate the amazing ambience. The only let down for me was, the total abscence of any breeze. It was so still the whole day and cloudy most of the time.

Throughout the day, I was having fun talking with everybody, poor shoba's mum, she got stuck with me, and as u guys have guessed.........poor lady. But hey, I was just trying to give her company you know.

We were all done by around 11:00pm. We started from there in about half a hours time and reached office near midnight.

I have to thank all the members of the team, and their family members who made this a special occasion. I have to especially point out the work done by sambhu and Mathew who organized this whole day and for Scott and satish for making it happen.

Thus came a end, to a very special day, a day that i will cherish for the rest of my life, a day that i will remember for so many reasons. They were moments of embarrassments, happiness, joy, comradeship and of course friendship. I got to know new people, make friends, got to know more about myself too in the process.

What Kumar felt about this trip...
Team Party at Fishermen's Cove....

3rd August 2005

I started the day in a very somber note. Was in a dilemma whether to go or not to go? My health initially wasn't responding energetically. Then finally took a decision to go for it.

Had I taken a decision of not joining the rest of the team for the party then definitely I would have missed loads of fun and frolic on this day. Yes. What a day it was. The day was simply superb. There were lots of “firsts”. Which one to mention...??? I'll list them one by one..

It was the first time in my life to go on an outing with the office gang. And it was really funny.

We were all advised to be at the office premises by sharp 9:00 AM. As usual Suresh, me and Sudhakar were prompt in attendance at the precise time set by the organizers in the given order. Then slowly one after the other others started pouring in.

When we were expecting a Chevrolet Tavera, there came a couple of Mahindra Scorpios. There started the surprises for the rest of the day. Mathew took a lot of effort in coordinating everything.

Finally when everybody assembled in the office premises we started moving to the outskirts of the city on the ECR road to Fishermen's cove (a scenic beach resort belonging to the Taj Group). It’s around 4-5 Kms from the Toll-plaza on the ECR road.

We were welcomed by the Fishermen's Cove resort authorities with a couple of welcome drinks (Lychee and Jal Jeera). I had a Lychee. It was stunningly, refreshed my senses. Everybody were enjoying their day like they have never done before in their life. It was real fun to watch other people.

Then the authorities took us to a place called “Machan” which is a thatched roof like wooden structure facing the sea. It is the place where we can put down our belongings safely and its the place where we can sit and peacefully watch the sea, then the second surprise. We are going for a Catamaran ride!!! Oh! I have never in my life before ridden a Catamaran.

We were advised to remove all the gadgets we were wearing. We are only allowed to wear the dresses and nothing else. No watches; no glasses; no cameras; no chains; no mobiles etc…etc.

Then we were taken down the beach way to the board on to the Catamaran. Initially we were told that Scott and Satish won't be riding the Catamaran with us. It was a surprise that they both joined us for the ride. We started the ride on a very positive note. All of us were forcefully asked to wear the life-jackets (striking orange in color). Ah! After coming a considerable distance deep into the sea, another shocking thing came. We were asked to jump into the sea. What? I was really scary to do so. Ahah! It was Scott who dived first into the sea. Then people like Suresh, Narsim, Hari and all started diving in. Slowly I got the courage to dive in. Ah! Ah! What am I doing? Thought I would drown into the sea. No man! No. I was floating on my back facing the sky above me. Got the trick. The life-jacket protects me from drowning. Slowly I realized that I am in safe hands. Mother sea is really mocking at me. Come on Kumar. You are floating man. Have you ever done this before? Come on... Enjoy the day. The sea was safe with experienced divers and guards around.

We all had a wonderful time, then after sometime we returned to land. Took shower, changed dresses. Then we were for lunch.

OH! What good food. Started with the tomato soup, proceeded with Vegetable Pulao, Butter Naan, Paneer Butter Masala, some Dhal stuff, Vegetable salads, Fruit salads, Mexican potatoes, a curd vada variant (wonderful), Chicken Kandhari, vanilla ice cream with Chocolate fudge and a sweet (was that the Apple pie). OH! What good food! What good food. Man! It was wonderful.

Hmm. I was just then contemplating whether we are going straight to bed or something. Suddenly somebody suggested Beach Volleyball. Hurray! Everybody started running to the ground and then started a wonderful game of Volleyball. Hey! Kumar. Have you ever touched the volleyball before (hey? Who is questioning me.... Come on. It’s my conscience). OK. OK. I admit I haven't played before. So what? I did a fair job in the game. Initially I was struggling. Then as usual Narsim started encouraging everybody and everybody got their feet and hand running up in the air. Hm. What a tiring game it was. Ahah! What am I seeing? Just at the end of the game, I saw Rohan sitting along with Scott and Satish with a can of Beer. OH! Rohan has joined the party. It’s another surprise.

Then we went for refreshment. Yes. Everybody deserved it. Because after the end of the game everybody were feeling really tired. Then had a couple of cups, of steaming coffee. They offered us tea, coffee, masala vada with green chutney and lots of cookies. I just restricted myself only with my dil-ka-pasand... Its real coffee man.

We then heading to Go-Carting. The Go-Carting location is located outside Fishermen's Cove. We all went there. At a given point of time 5 people can compete with each other. I got into the second round. The first round belonged to Rohan. The second round belonged to Mathew. The third round definitely belonged to Sambhu. Then there were so many rounds. In one of those rounds, I was amazed to see Priya's driving and I was really admiring her courage. Hmm. That’s great. Did I forget to mention that this was also my very first in my life.. Yeah. It was a wonderful feeling indeed.

After the go-carting thing, we all returned back to Fishermen's Cove. We took time to have a shower and changed for dresses. By the time we returned to the “Machan”, it was converted into a dining place. And 3 ex-DSRCians also joined us for the dinner party. They were Jagannath, Ravishankar & Ramesh. The drinks were served in one place and the food was served adjacent to that counter. I had around 3-4 rounds of Sand Piper Scotch Whisky. This was my first drink of this brand. It was a good scotch. What a drink? Wow feeling like floating...... Then started going rounds and rounds of thanks giving. Everybody were really enjoying the dinner. The dinner menu also was really great. But I forgot the menu. Was I drunk that much? No. It was the people that day who made me forget the dinner. Everybody were in a real jubilant and exuberant mood. Hmm. Its time to party man. Its time to party. What else do you need after years of toiling around all the “select” statements and “development” and “deployment” activities.

Then Sambhu thanked and praised the clients a lot. Then it was Rohan followed by Satish and Scott who praised the team and their stunning efforts.

Now its time to retire back to home. We all started finally back home. The cabs dropped us in the office and me & Suresh booked a double A/C room in the guest house opposite to the office and rested till the next morning.

Wow... What a day it was... Loads of fun. Loads of events and loads of sweet memories. Not to mention the loads of pictures that exhibits the mood of the day...

Never will I ever forget this in my life again.

Hmmmm. So chweet.

Kumar

Comments from some of the members of the trip...

By Chandrasekar (Renus' Husband)
Experience uncomparable, especially - Catamaran Ride.

By Hari
Had a good experience in catamaran. This is the first time i am visiting Fish Cove. I was amazed by the location of "Machan". I thoroughly enjoyed the karting as well as it made my adrenaline go up. Vijay bharath gasping for breath in 3 feet of beach water, Hari and his cowboy cap, scott commenting that shoba would drown even with the life jacket, scott telling that smitha drives better than murali are some moments that i'll never forget in my life. The best part was that things were very well planned by Sambhu/Mathew that we were engaged the whole day. Overall, its a 10 on 10.

More will be posted soon....hopefully!

For now enjoy the photos from the trip from the following link(http://www.flickr.com/photos/narsim/)

Say Cheese

SMILE - a very simple and beautiful abstract entity. Rare not in its existence but in the way it makes us feel. A gift that has been given to human kind. A gift that is out of the grasp of any other organism living on earth.

Very few know that a frown requires more work on our facial muscles than a smile. Now that - made me smile.

It costs us nothing to use it, but we seldom do. In this world, it seems the rarer commodity these days. Are we losing this precious gift, i hope not, not for our own sake.

A beautiful sunrise, the falling rain, a flower in full bloom, a cool breeze blowing, there is so much beauty, so much smile to be had..........do you

Are we forgetting, a baby's coo, a child's smile, a grin of a kid, a coy smile of a girl, a toothless smile of an old women, a simple smile, a smile that gives us so much hope, happiness, faith, trust and much much more

Do you remember the happiness u felt and the smile that lit your face when you see your best friends after the holidays in school, or our parents after being away from them only a few days when u were a kid or the first time your eyes feel on the ONE for you.

Do remember them, cherish those moments and smile.

A gift that requires so little effort, it costs you nothing, makes your feel better, feels great and does more things that i can could possible pen. You don't need to read this to know this, i guess we already know what it can and cannot do. It will always get back what u
give- almost always, possible more, which is true in very few things in life.

From today, make it a point to smile at a person, who u know nothing about, this may not make any difference to you (initially), but trust me it will make a difference. I do that everyday..............HONEST, i hope u do the same and see what miracles it can shower on you. This is not a altruistic gesture, just a reminder of what your are capable of giving and receiving. Believe me, you will feel better already. Some may think you are a weirdo or something, but most will smile back. So what are you waiting for..........

Start Smiling and Keep smiling

Mumblings of a Movie Maniac

Man is a very weird Species.
