Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: The Vale of Glamorgan Council and its partners in the voluntary sector are supporting National Carers Week with a Carers Day at Duffryn Gardens Marquee on Tuesday 15th June 10 am - 3 pm.

The week highlights the vital work done by those who provide unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled, for example a mother who cares for a disabled child, or a husband supporting a wife with Alzheimers. They could be providing support by doing someone's shopping and paying their bills, up to providing 24/7 support with medical needs and personal care. This year, the theme for the week is "a life of my own" . As such the organisers aim to provide carers with information on activities, hobbies, education, working and training courses to give them an opportunity for a life outside caring. This will be alongside information on support and services that will assist them as carers.

The event has been growing steadily each year and over 100 carers attended in 2009. As well as information, carers will have a chance to relax and tour the gardens, get a break from their caring role, get advice on manual handling and have a therapy session. Many carers suffer due to a lack of understanding about what they do - some don't even recognise themselves as carers. This has a real and negative impact on their health, finances, working and social life, and general wellbeing.

This year's Carers Week is supported by the actor Sir David Jason, who cared for his girlfriend before her death from breast cancer.

Sir David said: "Having been a carer myself, I am all too aware of the huge burden on those who are looking after a loved one and the daily struggles they face. Carers really are the unsung heroes of our society and all too often they struggle to get the recognition they deserve. I'm proud to be part of Carers Week and lend my voice to the call for more support and services for carers".

Adult Life - Managing money: Help2!
Event Description: The next meeting of the Cross Party Autism Group (CPAG) will take place on May 11th, 12.00noon - 1.15pm, at the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff Bay, Conference Room 24.

Professor Ian Stuart-Hamilton of the University of Glamorgan will report on the research into the circumstances and support needs of older people with autism which has been undertaken as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Autism Spectrum Disorder Strategic Action Plan. Please confirm in advance if you would like a place at this meeting by emailing cpagwales@nas.org.uk or by telephoning 02920 629316 as numbers are strictly limited. I attach a copy of the research report for your information.

In the interests of keeping Assembly Members engaged in the group, it would be helpful if you would contact your Assembly Members in advance of this meeting and ask them to attend. It is important to ensure that members of the Assembly are able to hear directly from people with autism, their families and professionals working in the field in order to help us influence change. You can find out who your Assembly Members are at www.wales.gov.uk
