Join Us for TWO Dragon Boat Festivals this Fall!

Nashville Paddle Co. has long been a sponsor of the Cumberland River Dragon Boat Festival. That’s partly because we support the Cumberland River Compact (we’re also a member of their member of 1% for Water group) and partly because it is so much fun! We get to wear costumes, shout until we are hoarse and paddle until our arms are noodles. Our trophies from previous years, as well as our prizes for best team spirit and other awards, are hanging up in the boathouse on Hamilton Creek.

I usually say the dragon boat races are my favorite day of the year…but this year they are my favorite TWO days of the year. Yep, we’re sponsoring two dragon boat races with the Compact this year. An inaugural race in Clarksville on Sept. 14 and the 14^th annual race in Nashville on Oct. 1.

It is not too late for to join us for the dragon boat fun! Registration is open for both races until August 15. You can register a team—your school, church or CrossFit friends—or you can sign up as an individual and be assigned to a team. The dragon boat stroke is very similar to a SUP stroke and we can do some practice on paddleboards. Either way, you’ll have a blast wearing a costume, listening to music, paddling hard for 250 meters and supporting the Compact.

DIY Pet Portrait Tips from Painted Paw Studio

Sarah Shearer, owner of Painted Paw Studio, is an avid paddler and long-time friend of Nashville Paddle Co. We are excited to collaborate with her on an upcoming event that brings together 3 of her loves: paddling, painting and pets! Paint & Paddle will start with a 15 min SUP or Kayak Land Lesson, followed by a 1 hour Social Paddle and 2 hour Guided Paint Session … ending with a 12″x12″ paw-fect acrylic portrait of your pet. For those who can’t join us, Sarah has put together these helpful tips to create our own masterpiece at home…

Top 5 Tips for Painting Your Own Pet:

1. Get a little guidance. I regularly teach a Paint Your Own Pet class that covers the basics – join me! Or, if you’re not in the Nashville area do a little Youtube search and watch painting tutorials before you get started.

2. Use the right supplies! Visit your local art supply store (Jerry’s Artorama is my Nashville favorite) and let them help you select the fundamental materials that will set you up for success.

3. Work from a good reference photo. A well-lit, high-resolution photo will yield noticeably better results than a poor-quality option.

4. Have patience with yourself. Think Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hours approach; everything takes time to master!

5. Practice makes perfect Don’t expect to be an expert right out of the gate. Just have fun!

The Big Payback For Water’s Sake

Some people paddle for exercise. Others for solitude. Others for camaraderie. But one thing everyone wants when it comes to getting out there on a board or in a kayak is clean water. That’s why we support the work of The Cumberland River Compact. On Wednesday, May 5, 2021 the Compact is looking to raise $5,000 to help keep the Cumberland River watershed, which includes J. Percy Priest Lake, clean. This effort is part of The Big Payback, a 24-hour period of giving organized by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The Big Payback is a full day to celebrate the spirit of giving and collaboration, and ultimately, the extraordinary work that nonprofits do in Middle Tennessee every day. Click here to donate.

The Waiting is the Hardest Part

We miss y’all and we miss this view. We want to see you, but only when it is safe to do so. We are working with Metro Parks and following Metro Nashville’s Roadmap for Reopening to determine when it will be safe to reopen. Until then, stay safe and stay apart.

Safer at Home

Strange times out there, aren’t they? The weather is amazing (there’s no humidity), lake temperatures are rising, and trees are budding. But we aren’t prepping to open quite yet. Due to COVID-19 prevention best practices, we are closed, as are many Metro Park facilities (tennis court, dog parks, and buildings are closed; trails and parks are open). While outdoor exercise is encouraged during Safer at Home mandates, paddleboarding and kayaking outfitters are non-essential businesses and closed statewide.

We know it is hard not to paddle; believe us, we know! But we encourage everyone to stay home and stay close to home. It may be tempting to go out on the water. But anything we can do to reduce the potential burden on area hospitals and first responders, the better equipped they will be to treat those who contract the Coronavirus.

We’re taking this extended time re-evaluate our processes and systems to make sure that we can reduce our capacity and keep gear sterilized and everyone safe when it is appropriate to re-open.

Stay safe, stay sane, and we hope to see you on the water soon.
